THE ASERE STORY

Drawing their inspiration from traditionalCuban music, seven young musicians formedAsere in the 1990s to create roots music witha contemporary feel while respectfully maintainingthe style and passion of the music of theirforefathers. Retaining acoustic instruments, theywrote new songs and inventive arrangements,developing a sound for a new generation, anddelivered it with an explosive punch. Their freshenergy, endearing personality and powerfulperformances soon attracted attention in Franceand the UK. From there Asere went on toperform all over the world, from Norway toSri Lanka. U.S. in 2016 with the Havana Cuba All-Starsshow, the band has returned this year inresponse to popular demand.

Asere has concentrated mainly on the musicalheritage of the son style. Son combines Africanrhythms with song structures from the Spanishmusical tradition. Originating in rural easternCuba at the end of the 19th century, son becamea highly fashionable dance form, taking theelegant salónes of Havana by storm in the earlydecades of the 20th century. In the 1970s sonbecame one of the key ingredients of salsa, whichemerged out of the Latin scene in New York.

Asere also incorporates into its repertoireother Cuban styles such as nueva trova, cha chachá, changuí, pilón and guaguancó. All thesedistinct rhythms add to the richness ofCuban culture with their own stories andcontext. Nueva trova, a contemporary balladstyle featuring singer-songwriter troubadours,evolved from son, principally in Havana.Changuí comes from a campesino tradition in andaround the hills of Guantánamo Province.Guaguancó is an Afro-Cuban groove originatingin the marginalized black communities in thedock areas of Havana andMatanzas.Cha cha cháevolved as a popular dance style in the early1950s.

Over the last three decades Asere has developedCuban musical traditions in its own unique wayand collaborated with many different artists,including the majestic Colombian singerTotó la Momposina and legendary thePanamanian-American drummer Billy Cobham.

The word asere (pronounced ah-séré), from theEfik dialect of the Afro-Cuban sect Abakua, isused as a greeting in Cuba.

DANCERS FROM IDENTIDAD

For this tour we are fortunate to feature specialguests from the dance group Identidad. Createdin 2012 by Barbarito Montagne in the townof Cienfuegos, Cuba, the company workswith young dance graduates in styles thatmake up the Cuban identity from traditionalto contemporary dance.

Barbarito himself has more than 35 years ofexperience working as a dancer, choreographer,teacher and director. He has represented theart of Cuban dance in Germany, Mexico,Haiti, Japan, Bulgaria and France.
