Semester and Year Assessment Conducted: 2014-15(Spring 2015)Standard Met? : Standard Not MetData was collected from 11 of the 14 sections of Math 23for a total of 225 students evaluated. Of those students44.4% passed the assessment (score of 2 or 3) and 55.5%did not pass (score of 0 or 1). See attached document for afull breakdown of the data.

Since 3 of the sections did not report data in time for theanalysis, it is possible that students in those sectionsperformed at a higher success rate; however, the dataindicates that students are not performing at expectedlevels in regard to this type of application problem.

It has been suggested by some faculty members that thequestion was too complex for the students given the levelof the course.

Comments from students in many math courses has beenthat tutors in the Student Success Center are notcomfortable assisting with word problems, and cansometimes create more confusion than help. (09/18/2015)

Exam/Test/Quiz - The followingapplication was to be solved bystudents: a corral is to be attachedto the side of a barn. Given theperimeter and width of the corral, students were asked to find a) thelength of the side opposite the barnand b) the area of the corral. Seeattached document for the exactquestion.

Semester and Year Assessment Conducted: 2014-15(Spring 2015)Standard Met? : Standard Not Met67% of the students passed the SLO and 33% did not. Thegoal of 70% was almost met. 48% of the students assessedshowed full understanding of the concept. That is, almosthalf of those assessed were able to compose amathematical expression using the context of the problem, perform the calculations correctly, and find the answer. 7%of the students assessed showed no understanding of theassessment; therefore 93% of the students had at leastslight understanding of the assessment. (06/08/2015)

Exam/Test/Quiz - The student willtake a 5 question online quiz. Seeattached for assessment.

Semester and Year Assessment Conducted: 2014-15(Spring 2015)Standard Met? : Standard Not Met281 students in 13 sections were assessed at the ComptonCenter. Out of the these students 93 (33%) scored a 2 and73 (26%) scored a 3. 59% got a 2 or 3 on the rubric. The target was not met but it was very close. There was onesection, #9771, that did not report in time for the tally so itmight have been met, or more clearly not met. (09/09/2015)

Exam/Test/Quiz - This is a wordproblem involving solving systems oflinear equations. In this case used tocompare different gym rates.

Casey wants to join a gym. Afterdoing some research she finds outthe LA Fitness is charging a $99initiation fee and then $29.95 amonth. She also finds out that Goldsgym was charging $19.99 a monthand after further investigation findsthat Gold’s gym is charging a $199initiation fee.

Part a) Find the equation in functionnotation for the cost of membershipat both gyms. You may use f(x) andg(x) for the function notation ofthese equations.Part b) Find the cost of joining eachgym if Casey decides to quit the gymafter 2 months. Which of the twogyms would have been better if sheonly joins for two months?Part c) How many months will it takefor the cost of membership to be thesame at each gym? Explain using agraph, table, or algebraic methods.
