Position Summary: The incumbent is responsible for all functions involving media relations, in-game event management, maintenance of historical records, and NCAA-mandated statistics for all assigned intercollegiate teams; responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with relevant internal and external constituents to ensure that the public receives relevant, timely, and desired information about the intercollegiate athletics program; and assists in providing strategic direction in developing communication, marketing, and public affairs plans to support long-term objectives of the Athletics Department while increasing the visibility of the University's athletic programs. Duties: Performs varied communication assignments related to public and media relations and athletics marketing in- cluding assisting in the development of media relations plans. Coordinates press conferences as needed (special event, postgame); coordinates media needs before, during and after events. Produces weekly sports updates and distributes them electronically to opponents, media, fans, and staff; main- tains department website. Writes press releases, post-game stories, student-athlete signings, awards, new hire announcements, rankings, etc. for assigned sports; maintains photo files of coaches, staff, and student-athletes for use in brochures, on the web, and in the media; pitches feature story ideas to local, regional, and national media outlets. Produces and implements creative marketing content, video, social media and website campaigns for the Department of In- tercollegiate Athletics. Oversees production of record books, including research, writing, editing, layout and design; produces game- day programs, scorecards, and inserts; monitors, maintains and updates all-time statistical record database. Produces marketing content for game day programs, news releases, websites, ticket brochures, fundraising flyers, camp brochures, print advertising, and other campus publications that promote intercollegiate athletics; designs brochures and flyers for camps, clinics, and other department fundraisers. Provides reports of daily, weekly, and yearly statistics to CCAA and NCAA; generates game statistics using computer-based programs. Facilitates interaction with coaches, student-athletes, media relations, and administrators. Provides lead coordination of award programs, including nominating student athletes for Player of the Week and post-season awards. Provides lead work direction to staff and on-site work direction to student assistants at home contests, which includes game day event management and coordination of duties. Duties take place in an office setting located at Humboldt State University, with additional duties performed both indoors and outdoors in various locations on- and off-campus as it relates to coordinating and supporting events and programs. As an exempt employee, the incumbent has some flexibility in setting their schedule, however, the in-cumbent must be available during regular campus hours Monday through Friday to meet the operational needs of the campus and department. Some evening and weekend hours are required and will be specified by the supervisor to meet operational needs. Incumbent will travel (by air, bus, automobiles) to conference, regional, and national post-season events with teams, as well as overnight stays away from campus. The incumbent must maintain regular and acceptable attendance to athletic events at such levels as the Athletic Director determines. This position requires, with or without reasonable accommodations, the ability to frequently sit, move or stand to work in office and game facilities, be at a computer for 6-8 hours per day, occasionally reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop and kneel and lift objects of up to 50 lbs in weight. The incumbent must also possess or be able to obtain a valid California Driver's License. Minimum Qualifications: Entry into the Public Affair s / Communications Specialist classification requires knowledge of the fundamentals of public affairs and media relations, and some exposure to marketing and market-ing research. This background normally is obtained through a college degree, which includes relevant coursework in the field, AND up to two years of related professional or technical experience. Additionally, work at position skill level III (Public Affairs / Communications Specialist III) requires the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below, which would normally be obtained through three additional years of related professional or technical experi-ence. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of communication, public affairs, media, marketing, and/or media relations theories and concepts in order to develop and execute communication strategies and plans to promote the University's Athletics Department.

Expert knowledge of university communication objectives and ability to translate them into effective commu-nication and media campaigns, along with expert writing, editorial and verbal communication skills with a solid foundation in the composition of various communication vehicles are necessary for success in this role.

Solid computer skills including, but not limited to, advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook). Intermediate skills with desktop publishing software (such as lnDesign, Photoshop, and video editing software such as iMovie, Adobe Premiere and Adobe After Effects).

Thorough knowledge of and ability to use effectively media outlets (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, HootSuite). Experience with Stat Crew, NCAA Genius, Blue Frame, Next Gen, SIDEARM, VidSwap, Vol-leyMetrics, and/or Livestats.

Thorough knowledge of applicable copyright and other laws pertaining to publications and the news media

Ability to understand issues from a broad, strategic perspective.

Comprehensive knowledge of and ability to apply standard marketing principles.

Ability to apply appropriate statistical techniques and methods to conduct research.

Knowledge of interview techniques and the ability to define and deliver media messages.

Ability to effectively manage media relations and apply effective media strategies and techniques.

Demonstrated ability to market story concepts to university officials and media outlets.

Comprehensive knowledge of marketing and research techniques and methods.

Ability to perform detailed work with accuracy under time pressures.

Ability to provide lead work direction.

Expert networking and interpersonal skills including strong consultative and persuasive skills to work with internal and external constituents and the media.

Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective inclusive working relationships amongst diverse popu-lations including staff, faculty, administration, students, and other internal and external constituents.

Must be able to accept constructive feedback and work cooperatively in group situations. Preferred Qualification: Five or more years of collegiate athletic media relations exper ience
