FASHION TRENDThis photo, from the cover of Louisiana State University humor magazine Pallmell, depicts the arrival of stripper Stacie Stormy Laurence in March of 1948. The woman, who stripped for the students on March 4th, is wearing a typical 1940s evening dress.

Laurence’s dress shows almost exact similarities to this modern La Femme slinky sequence evening gown, from its sweetheart

and strapless neckline to its long slit up the leg to its tight body hugging fit. This gown is a popular choice for young promgoers

today.

FASHION TRENDThe wedding style of Grace Kelly, American movie star and princess of Monaco, must have been both iconic and timeless because connections were made to it and the dress worn by Kate Middleton when she married the Prince of Wales April 29, 2011.

With their similar ornate lace long sleeves to their simple vales, Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen clearly used this 1956

dress as inspiration. The new duchess of cambridge wasn’t the first bride to be inspired by this 1950s look, both Trump

and Riche were inspired by the lace sleeves and Riche with the similar waist band.

The 1990’s saw an abundance of full midriff showing in youth fashion. Pop icons Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera were prime examples of the midriff trend. Shirts were typically cropped at the waist, exposing the belly.

Currently, the midriff is coming back into style, as shown here in the Free People fall catalog crop tops. These contrast their

1990’s counterparts with higher waistlines of the bottoms, while the tops are still cropped to the waist.

FASHION TRENDThe fall 2011 Miu Miu runway show has clear 1940s inspiration with the rolled and padded hairstyles and make-up.

In addition to the hair and makeup, he clothes themselves resemble 1940s style with the shirtdress, pointed collar, and

masculine square shoulders.

Twiggy, the face of the year in 1966, was iconic in fashion of the 60’s. Here, her tiny figure models classic 60’s A-line dresses. She popularized the ‘mod’ look, which grew out of the British youth movement.

The black and white A-line Asos dress is inspired by the 1960’s Mondrian dress, and the red A-line Asos dress on the left is

inspired by the era’s shift dress.

These 1930’s high-waisted extremely wide leg pants were leisure and sportswear for women. An early example of a more prevalent wearing of bifurcated garments on women.

These are looks from Free People’s most recent catalog - clearly inspired by the 1930’s, mirroring the high waist and wide leg.

These are examples of the 1980’s power suit, which stemmed from menswear influences and was defined by bright neon colors, low buttons, and shoulder pads.

Modern example of an 80’s-inspired power suit, complete with shoulder pads, bright colors, long collar, and low buttons.

Turban hats become increasingly popular in the 1930’s and 40’s. Iconic fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli wears one here.

These vintage-inspired turban hats are coming back into style, but this time as winter outerwear rather than evening or

daywear.

The early twentieth centuries’ coronet was a women’s hair accessory worn with eveningwear on top of the head like a crown.

This modern example of the coronot headpiece is sold by Free People. Like the one from the Jazz Age, this version is a dressy

embellished hair accessory - however, it is worn lower on the head, more like a headband.

Pettycoats were worn as women’s undergarments for most of the 19th century. However, this mid-19th century pettycoat is unique, as most were white.

This updated pettycoat by American Apparel is obviously much shorter than it’s 19th century counterpart. Also, this pettycoat is worn as a skirt, not an undergarment - an example of historic

underwear becoming outerwear.
