Rooks for Riches by Miles Davis

“I want my work to mean something. I want to look back on my life and see that I contributed more than just pretty pictures on a wall. Ideally, my work would refl ect not only on my generation, but on humanity itself: to embrace the human condition in all its insecurities and joys—with all of its angers and solaces.”

nd with his upcoming gallery show “Imagine This,” along with another locally renowned artist Kawai Laurencin, Miles Davis is doing just that. Miles has been sparingly showing his strikingly original paintings over the past couple of years, gaining steam for this show.

The very personal and therapeutic pieces have drawn collectors of all ages and walks of life. He explains: “I think most of the people that give my paintings serious consideration fi nd honesty in the human element of the work. It touches on moments of sheer happiness and runs the gamut to helplessness and fear.”

The aesthetics of the show are very contemporary and will showcase an illustrative, urban style that reads from two true emerging talents. Borrowing from various styles

that helped defi ne their generation, these two young artists are fast proving they are visual maestros, not to be taken for granted. Whether you are a serious art collector or just want to treat yourself to some thoroughly satisfying eye candy, you need to be at “Imagine This.” The show will last for three days only, September 25-27, at the Granite Room in Castleberry Hill. In conjunction

with the monthly Art Stroll and annual Loft Tour, Imagine This promises to be a stellar event. The opening reception will be held on Friday, September 25 from 7pm to midnight and will feature an acoustic performance by Atlanta musician Sonny Legaspi with music courtesy of Trace Studios, Atlanta based production studio. Imagine This will also showcase “Eclipse,” the fi rst collaborative painting from Kawai and Miles, which will be offered in a raffl e at the close of the show. ibby Whittemore once recorded

an album titled “Libby

Whittemore Is Almost A Legend.”

The title was incorrect. Libby

Whittemore is a legend, especially in her

home town of Atlanta.

As she describes it, “a switch fl ipped

inside me in 9th grade, and I knew I wanted

to sing. If there is a showbiz bug, that’s

when I got bit.”

Libby’s career is inextricably tied to

Atlanta’s cabaret theatre history. Atlanta of the 1970’s offered patrons intimate theatre

and musical experiences in venues such as The Manhattan Yellow Pages, Showcase

Cabaret, and Horizon Dinner Theatre. Libby began her career in these venues, as she

puts it, “Lucky to come along in the heyday of cabaret in Atlanta.”

It was during a stint at Showcase Cabaret that she met Tom Edwards, a talent who

created two popular shows, “Della’s Diner” and “Tan Shoes and Pink Shoelaces.” Libby

gained fame in both of these productions, even venturing to Los Angeles where she

met Matt Calloway, a collector of music with “albums up to the ceiling.” Through him,

Libby discovered “a whole new world of music,” as she explains it. “Doris Day, Patti

Page, singers I had never heard before. I had found ‘the stuff’ I wanted to do. Before, I

had sung 50’s, 60’s pop and country. Now I incorporated standards into my song mix.”

Libby continued creating her “legend” from 1981 until 1989 at the Ansley Park

area cabaret “Gene and Gabes.” “This is where I honed my craft,” she says. A mix of

intimate chat and song became a one-woman signature show.

The cabaret scene changed during the 1990’s. For ten years, there were few

venues catering to her specialty, and so Libby refocused on acting. She was seen in

numerous television and movie roles, mostly in smaller parts, but she was consistently

working. Then, in 1999, Chris Coleman of Actor’s Express contacted her about a

cabaret event at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta. The show was a huge success, and

Libby was inundated with calls and letters, urging her to come back to the stage in a

permanent way. And so, “Libby’s Cabaret” was born in 2000.

Located in Buckhead, “Libby’s Cabaret” drew crowds of fans. The experience

of running both the show and, eventually, the business was “chilling and thrilling,”

according to Libby. After many successful years, it closed on New Year’s Eve, 2006.

But the song plays on. Libby can currently be enjoyed several times a year at

Actor’s Express, singing “some of the most beautiful songs ever written,” during

special shows at Christmas and in February, April and June.

“I am very, very lucky,” Libby sums up her life so far. “Cabaret is a wonderful art

form, and I was so fortunate to be in the right place at the right time in Atlanta. And I

am lucky to still be singing.”

Thousands of Libby’s fans will agree that they are the lucky ones.

heater of the Stars is one of the oldest continuously operating theater companies

in the country. We are a professional not-for-profi t theater in which surpluses

from successful seasons go into reserves

to support seasons that are not fi nancially

successful. We are a community owned company based in

Atlanta but with a national reach.

We do two things at Theater of the Stars: We produce

shows and we promote shows that are touring through the

country. Historically, roughly half of the shows that audiences

see on the stage are shows that have been produced by Theater

of the Stars and the other half are touring shows direct from

Broadway. Sometimes there aren’t enough high quality shows

that are touring that fi t both our schedule and our needs so

we end up producing more. Sometimes it’s the exact opposite,

there are many available touring shows so we produce fewer

ourselves.

From our perspective both types of shows are rewarding. When you promote a show it is

exciting because you end up having access to shows that you would never be able to produce

at the same scale or level. Many of our audience members have come to love the big Broadway

touring shows.

However, our heart is in producing shows. It takes a unique set of skills to bring together

the right team of people to create a show from the ground up and it is quite satisfying to see the

fi nished product. It is more expensive to produce shows than to promote a touring show, and

it is riskier because the touring show has a defi ned cost and you do not know the cost of the

produced show until all of the bills are in.

We have this pool of a dozen or so directors, choreographers and designers that we know

well, and we select the one best suited to a particular show. We hold auditions in New York and

Atlanta and try to get a nice blend of people who have done the show before as well as people

who are new to the show. New people give energy to the show that is hard to replace and the

experienced people give the style and precision that is hard to replicate. We rehearse for a

week or two, conduct a few days of technical rehearsals and then put the show in front of the

audience. The result is often memorable and sometimes quite special.

hole World Improv Theatre is an extremely popular improv comedy

troupe that has been a part of the Atlanta community for 15 years. The troupe offers a wide range of talent and skill to create an UNREHEARSED, live experience based entirely on audience suggestions. The live improvisational scenes are

punctuated with fi lmed “renegade” videos written and produced entirely by the cast. This “off the cuff” format provides a unique show with every performance, guaranteeing the show to be relevant to the local culture, current events and, most importantly, the audience in attendance.

People will be surprised at how much talent exists at a small theatre in Atlanta, Georgia. The performers exhibit a high level of professionalism and intense dedication to each situation and moment on stage. Their ability to fi nd humor from the most mundane to the most bizarre situations is both fascinating and entertaining.

Audience members should also expect to be a truly integral part of the show. Friendly volunteers approach those in attendance for ideas before the show while an emcee prompts them for suggestions during the live performance.

Whole World Improv Theatre’s offerings do not end with its performances. They are committed to providing the best improv classes in the country for people of all ages. Programs include Adult Improv for beginners to accomplished actors, Youth and Teen classes, and Kids Summer Camp. They also customize their talents to provide alternative concepts such as Corporate Shows, Teambuilding Workshops, Private Events, and Holiday Parties.

Whole World is not merely a comedy club. Its fast-paced, high-energy show is like nothing else in Atlanta. It is a theatrical event, a happening, and an experience. Regardless of why you attend, once you enter the front door, you have just obtained a ticket to the hottest party in town!

he Atlanta Chamber Players, hailed by the AJC as Atlanta’s “All-Stars”,

have received national and international acclaim as one of the Southeast’s most respected

artistic groups. The ACP is a mixed chamber ensemble of strings, winds and piano headed by Artistic Director and pianist Paula Peace and including leading members of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. The ACP performs wonderfully diverse chamber music with superior artistry and technique in a wide variety of interesting venues. Music ranges from the classic to the contemporary and includes new pieces commissioned for the ACP.

The Atlanta Chamber Players present their 34th season this year and promise exciting programs of beloved masterpieces and innovative music for the public. The upcoming season will open and close with the fruits of “Rapido! A 14-Day Composition Contest”, sponsored by ACP and The Antinori Foundation. First is the October 4, 2009 concert at the High Museum’s Walter Hill Auditorium, which culminates in performances of four short Finalist compositions. A distinguished panel of guest judges will judge the compositions, and the audience in attendance will choose the audience favorite! First prize will be a commission to expand the winning work for its offi cial world premiere at the fi nal concert of the season April 28, 2010 at the New American Shakespeare Tavern. Also on tap at the Shakespeare Tavern this season (January 26, 2010) will be a fully staged performance of Igor Stravinsky’s brilliant 1918 theatrical masterpiece – L’Histoire du Soldat (A Soldier’s Tale), complete with seven ACP musicians and conductor, plus narrator, actors and dancers from the theater roster. The ACP season also features a concert at the renowned Spivey Hall (February 28, 2010) celebrating Schumann’s bicentennial and a program of “Chamber Music in Sacred Spaces” at the Ahavath Achim Synagogue (April 28, 2010). This performance includes Dmitri Shostakovich’s 1944 Piano Trio in E Minor, considered one of the greatest musical works from the World War II era. This profoundly moving work combines mystery and pathos with war machine rhythms and Jewish melodies.

The Atlanta Chamber Players invite you to share in a spectacular season of rewarding chamber music. Single concert tickets are $20, or $25 at Spivey Hall; student tickets are available half price with ID. ACP is now also offering substantially discounted series subscription packages! Sketchworks Spotlight Fall09Sketchworks is unlike comedy you’ve

seen before because it’s NOT improv. It’s home to Atlanta’s very best scripted, live and fi lmed comedy sketches, and it’s an experience it’d be hard to fi nd anywhere else.

Every main stage show is a smash, because the Sketchworks “family” has attracted the very best comedy writers, actors, and fi lmmakers Atlanta has to offer.

The all new main stage show, “Sketch-22” opens September 18 and runs 8pm Friday and Saturday nights through October 24 with a 5pm Sunday matinee October 18.

Sketchworks offers writing and acting classes, and has just started a very popular SketchTeens program for those of you destined for the Disney Channel or Nick!

Agatha’s is like no other dinner theater in the country. For the past 20 years their shows have used a mix of improv, scripted material, and (most importantly) audience participation to create the most hysterical mysteries you’ve ever seen! You don’t just get a 5 course meal, you don’t just get an original comedy, you get to be IN the show! A Season of Ballet in AtlantaIn 1929, Dorothy Alexander launched the

dance group that would grow into today’s vibrant Atlanta Ballet. Thanks to her vision, stamina and grace, Atlanta is proud to be home to the longest continually operating ballet in the nation.

Known for always breaking ground Atlanta Ballet is setting new trends with their 2009-2010 season line-up of Atlanta Ballet premieres at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre and the annual holiday favorite Atlanta Ballet’s Nutcracker at the Fabulous Fox Theatre.

Kicking off the year will be Mozart’s Magic Flute. This opera’s familiar characters are all there in new post-millennium glory. Also in October, for younger audience members, Atlanta Ballet presents Pinocchio a one-hour family ballet.

In keeping with everyone’s favorite holiday tradition, Atlanta Ballet presents Nutcracker for a limited three week engagement at the Fabulous Fox Theatre. And, for one night only, December 20, the hilarious and zany Nutty Nutcrackerreturns.

Spring brings to the stage John McFall’s Cinderella as well as Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and Sheer Exhilaration, a dynamic evening of mixed repertoire.
