Elay, PP Dante at Sps. Noemi, PP Flor at Sps. Vising, PP George, Sps Leonor at Lea, PP Noel, PP Boy, VP Dodjie, Dir. Hermie, Rtn. Charlie, Rtn. Joel, Dist. Chairman Julie, Sps. Julie, Sps. Fely, Sps. Vicky at Sec Allan. Bernard, Sec. Allan, Dir. Hermie, Dir. Benjie, PD Edward at Sps Bernadette. Hermie, at Sec. Allan. Bernard at Dir. Benjie. …...continuation on page 12

Jonathan Arcellana.

STAR PROGRAM Special Training for Action in Rotary (STAR) for RY 2010-2011 to promote membership growth and retention. 1. Project Nomenclature – Continuing Education in Rotary (CER) through Special Train-

ing for Action in Rotary (STAR) Program.

2. Project Description – The STAR program originated and was started by the Rotary Club of El Paso, Texas, USA, in 1976 In R.I. District 3800, it was first introduced dur-ing the incumbency of PDG “Pepe” Peralta. However, it was short lived, because it was not adopted as a continuing project by the succeeding governors, except to mod-ify it under a Rotary Academy.

3. Rationale – It is within President Elect Ray’s “Top Ten New Ideas for Club and Dis-tricts” in which clubs and districts are encouraged to adopt as new membership ap-proaches in recruitment and retention of members.

4. Objectives – the learning objectives/goals of the program are: 4.1 To promote membership growth and retention through involvement, information and

education; 4.2 To serve as a vehicle for effective Rotary Information; 4.3 To promote effective fellowship among new members with club’s more experienced

Rotarians; and 4.5 To enhance basic knowledge in Rotary as an effective measure of enjoying Rotary at

its best.

5. Action Plan – The following STAR guidelines should be adopted: “5.1 Each new member is placed on the STAR Committee and request to complete a ques-

tionnaire of their interests and skills and provide a photo. The new member’s biographi-cal sketch is then presented in the club’s weekly bulletin. New members are distin-guished by a red star pasted on their Rotary badge with a red ribbon attached, and ex-perienced members are encouraged to sit with them at club meetings and become ac-quainted.

5.2 Two hour long STAR breakfast meetings are hold once a month. All new members are encouraged to attend these meeting for one year.

5.3 The STAR Committee is made up of past club and district leaders. 5.4 All members are invited to attend at any time to update themselves on Rotary Informa-

tion and to meet the new members. In addition, members of any other clubs in the dis-trict are welcome to attend.

5.5 Typical meetings may feature a welcome to first-time attendees, recognition of new STAR graduates, announcements of upcoming club and district activities and events”.

To be continued next week...

THE CLIMATE OF THE PHILIPPINES (Typhoons)

Typhoons in the Philippines The Philippines sit astride the typhoon belt, and the country suffers an annual onslaught of dangerous storms from July through October. These are espe-cially hazardous for northern and eastern Luzon and the Bicol and Eastern Visayas regions, but Manila gets devastated periodically as well.

Bagyo is the local term to any tropical cyclone in the Philippine Islands.[4] From the statistics gathered by PAGASA from 1948 to 2004, around an average of 20 typhoons per year enter the PAR (Philippine Area of Responsibility) - the designated area assigned to PAG-ASA to monitor during weather disturbances. Those that made landfall or crossed the Philippines, the aver-age was nine per year. In 1993, a record 19 typhoons

made landfall in the country making it the most in one year. The least amount per year were 4 during the years 1955, 1958, 1992 and 1997.[6]

Typhoons are categorized into four types according to its wind speed by the PAGASA. All tropical cyclones, regardless of strength, are named by PAGASA.

Tropical Depressions have maximum sustained winds of between 55 kilometres per hour (30 kn) and 64 kilometres per hour (35 kn) near its center.

Tropical Storms have maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometres per hour (35 kn) and 119 kilometres per hour (64 kn).

Typhoons achieve maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometres per hour (65 kn) to 185 kilometres per hour (100 kn), Super typhoons having maximum winds exceeding 185 kilometres per hour (100 kn).

DEADLIEST STORM The deadliest typhoon to impact the Philippines was Typhoon Uring (Thelma) in November, 1991, in which 5,080 lives were lost from its resultant flooding and over 1,200 missing.

STRONGEST TYPHOONS The highest wind velocity recorded for a typhoon that crossed the Philippines was recorded in Virac on November 30, 2006 when Typhoon Reming (Durian) had a peak gust of 320 Kph (198 mph).

Tropical Storm Thelma (1991)

RCC Marikina Valley by: Pres. Joey Ramos

The RCC Marikina Valley held its first meeting again this Rotary Year 2010-2011 to support its spon-sor, the Rotary Club of Marikina last August 4 at the Marikina Rotary Youth Center. This meeting was made through the initiative of the new RCC Chairman Rtn. Dan Sibal. Election was made and yours truly was re-elected again after two years of absence as president. This was my fifth year as president since its conception during PP Kiko Pe Benito’s Centennial term. To unify and refresh the “old soldiers” in us, the board held a fellowship lunch meeting with the rest of the RCC last Sunday, August 8. Several Rotarians were present: Rtn. Dan Sibal, Rtn. Willy Cruz and Rtn. Joel Villanueva. Again, congratulations and more power to the Global Team and to Gov. Jun Farcon. We pledge our full support as always to our sponsoring club. Mabuhay!

MARAMING SALAMAT AT MABUHAY!!!!!!!
