Executive Message
LBA Executive Director
Susan Holliday
Greetings! Hope your summer
was a good one and that you were able to take some time off and disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. I was fortunate to be able to take a weeklong vacation in the Caribbean without my cell phone. I went “off the grid” as they call it with no texts, emails, twitter, NOTHING and I am here to tell you it was FANTASTIC! Even though I may be part of the most plugged in generation in history, I quickly discovered how enjoyable life can be without all the electronic tools we use every day. Life moves much slower “off the grid” allowing you are to live in the moment. I was like the popular Zac Brown song, with my toes in the water a** in the sand with not a worry in the world and cold beer in my hand….. Life is good! Our upcoming Bench Bar Conference is going to focus on helping attendees make the most out of every day by working smarter not harder and learning to manage the everyday stresses associated with the legal profession. Each of you should have received the 2012 Bench Bar Conference brochure which highlights the incredible speaker line up and the awesome events such as Galatoire’s, Acme Oyster House and The Galvez. This is going to be an amazing conference that will help you learn how to juggle all the moving parts in our lives successfully. Hope you will make every effort to attend. Now that the summer is coming to a close the bar staff and I are getting geared up for
our Fall programming which includes: Maritime CLE, LYLA Installation Banquet honoring Lindsay Meador, LBA Installation banquet honoring Blake David, CLE by the Hour and much more. More information about these and other upcoming events or CLE opportunities can always be found at www.lafayettebar.org. Hope to see each of you soon at an upcoming event!

2011-2012 LYLA President
Steven Ramos, Onebane
After 12 fun months, my time as
LYLA President is coming to an end. I have had a great time leading this organization and hope to stay involved in the future. I know LYLA will be in good hands with incoming president, Lindsay Meador, at the helm.
But enough about me. LYLA had a busy summer, capped off with the recent social at City Club. Attendance was high and, as usual, the event was top notch. Many thanks go out to the Social Committee ‐‐ Jeff Coreil, Jerome Moroux, and Donnie O'Pry ‐‐ for their hard work in putting on the event.
In addition, LYLA hosted its "Advice, Attorneys, Answers" community service event in late June. The program consisted of a series of presentations on a several legal topics of interest to the community. Admission was completely free and open to anyone. The event was a complete success and had a much larger
than expected attendance. Again, many thanks go out to Rachel Godley and Claire Oliver for organizing and advertising (and advertising, and advertising) the event. I'd also like to give Larry Curtis, LBA President, a big thank you for going on local television to help promote the event.
Next on the agenda is LYLA's annual installation banquet at La Fonda on August 30, 2012. This is when LYLA will officially install its new slate of board members ‐‐ including its 2012 ‐ 2013 officers Lindsay Meador (President), Cliff Lacour (President‐elect), and Trey Hightower (Secretary/Treasurer). It is always a great event and I hope to see many of you there.
Finally, I would like to thank all of those persons who made this year such a wonderful experience for me: my entire LYLA board who gives their time and energy to make this organization a success; the other LYLA officers, Lindsay, Cliff, and Danielle, who help carry the weight of leadership; Larry Curtis and the other members of the LBA board, who gave us the autonomy to run this organization as we saw fit (and were always there to help out when we needed it); Susan, Claire, and the rest of the LBA staff for the hard work and tremendous support that they give to LYLA; and last, but not least, my wife Erin and children Reed and Lilly, who sacrifice their time so that Daddy can serve. This year has been an honor and a privilege that I will not soon forget.
THANK YOU!

By: Amy W. Gossen , daughter of Judge Ware
REMEMBERING HONORABLE GEORGE BRADFORD WARE, SR.
As families go.…,mine is very colorful. First of all, my step‐father is my husband’s uncle…….now, how many people can say that??
I actually don’t ever refer to my dad as a step‐father. To me, he was always my dad. He came into my life when I was two and he married my mother when I was 4….. and from that point on there were always 4 of us – Eddie, Brad, Marla and me. And while we were all very different….. we were not treated differently. Oh sure, daddy was easier on some – harder on others…….For example: Poor Eddie is the oldest and so a lot was expected of him. He didn’t really push daddy’s buttons but daddy could be hard on him anyway. A lot was expected of Brad because he is his namesake …..but let’s face it….daddy let a lot slide too (smile). Then there is Marla who gave daddy a run for his money. She could push his buttons and will tell you today that she was punished so often she missed all of the best parties. I am the baby – and unfortunately, for the older 3, everybody loves the baby…… so I got away with everything.
While we were all different, daddy treated each of us as his child, his son or daughter, some biological and some not……. I always felt we were treated as his brood, his clan,
his people. And he gave to each of us different gifts within this most colorful family of his. .
One might say….. that Eddie and Brad shared their father with us. And that would be correct. They allowed us to impose and often take from them the time he had
here. Marla and I are forever grateful for this.
Today, the four of us, and my mother, say goodbye to the bond of our family. To all of you who knew him….. Remember him when you hear a guitar playing, or see a sailboat……. He loved music and was proud to be an accomplished sailor. He loved ….his church, his family, his grandchildren, his siblings, his friends and he loved to have a good time! That was daddy. Daddy was a humble man. In 38 years, I never heard him brag or boast once. We lived with only what we needed. Daddy was…..well……lets say frugal. This can be proven…… by the cars we all drove. Some didn’t have floor boards and
few had matching tires but they all had a good engine. I guess I can understand his hesitancy as 2 of the children – and I won’t mention names here – wrecked the car not once, not twice but at least 5 times! By the time he got to me he was exhausted!
Daddy also had a great sense of humor. He told me years ago that when he was born, people came from miles around to see him because he was such a beautiful baby. And, I believed him……until high school! I actually told people this……looking back it was so typical of his personality to let me believe this and repeat it!
Daddy would be considered “old school” today…. And he was. He was punctual, and he drilled this into our everyday existence. We were never late. Well, God has a sense of humor because I was raised TO BE ON TIME….and then I married a Gossen. Let’s just say I have had to bend a little.
Daddy was honest….. and respectful. He taught us manners, especially at the table, and emphasized moral character. He was a dedicated lawyer and Judge and held us accountable at home as well. He practiced at home what he preached on the bench.
His sense of humor, his character, and his honesty and integrity were all gifts he shared. I would like to end by saying that I think in life we are each given gifts that we are supposed to share with others. We each have a certain amount of time to share these gifts. Daddy shared his life with us, but his greatest gift to me was that….. he loved my mother. I thank him for that, and I hope I have honored him today for the wonderful man that he was.

Each year the Louisiana State Bar Association selects one attorney or judge per region from the thousands through‐out the state to receive their prestigious Crystal Gavel Award for contributions to the community of a non‐legal nature. The recipient of the 2012 Crystal Gavel is Lafa‐yette’s Glenn Armentor. James Davidson III, President of the Louisiana State Bar Association offered this comment regarding the recognition, “I am incredibly pleased to hon‐or Glenn with this prestigious award which was created to recognize lawyers and judges who have made significant contributions in their communities through volunteer work.”
As a boy, Armentor was raised in Lafayette in abject pov‐erty as one of ten children. Circumstances in his life, as a youth, could have easily led him down a path where he would’ve spent most of his time as a defendant in court‐rooms as opposed to a staunch advocate for the rights of others. Fortunately for Glenn, there were adults who judged him more on his potential than his poverty and with their help he was able to rise above these challenges and work his way through law school by working off‐shore.
Armentor is being recognized for his lifetime of commit‐ment to helping, supporting and guiding at risk youth in Acadiana. In the early 80’s, as the Boy’s Club and Girl’s Club of Acadiana struggled to develop roots in the com‐munity, Glenn Armentor was instrumental in helping the organization secure facilities offering a safe haven for kids to pursue wholesome, healthy activities. Since that time, the club has guided thousands of young boys and girls down the right path, away from drugs and crime.
Around the same time, Armentor became a passionate supporter of the Ragin Cajun Amateur Boxing Club where he joined coach Beau Williford in helping redirect trou‐bled young boys, focus their aggressions more positively and return to school to live more promising lives. Unfortu‐nately, in 2003,the club's location burned to the ground causing a huge financial burden on the club. Later, when it appeared the operation would have to close its doors due to lack of funding, Glenn took it upon himself to spear‐head a fundraising drive which led to a new facility and a renewed and reinvigorated program which today serves as one of the nation’s models in the field.
In 2009, Glenn Armentor introduced the Glenn Armentor $10,000 “Pay it Forward” Scholarship Program of Excel‐lence which empowered citizens to identify hardworking underprivileged young people and nominate them for
$10,000 scholarships to the Uni‐versity of Louisiana at Lafayette. Since that time seven worthy students have received one of the $10,000 scholarships. Glenn hopes to increase the offering to 6 or 8 scholarships per year. It is the largest individual scholarship grant program in the history of the university.
Glenn Armentor has spent his entire adult life repaying those who helped him through his troubled youth by re‐turning the favor to others who walk in those same shoes today. As he once said when speaking at a major Louisiana Black Chamber of Commerce event, “Today the world is harder and more brutal. There are many at risk kids in need of care and guidance. If you know of one who is trou‐bled, send them to me.” Based on Armentor’s track record in helping risk youth, it may be the greatest favor you could do.
