President’s Message

IT IS TIME. YES. It is time to put the

Bench Bar Conference on your calendar and notify the Bar Association by e-mailing Susan, Ruthie or Claire if you intend on participating.

This year’s bench bar is slated to be the BEST EVER. Boyd Anderson is the chairman this year and has been working with the staff to put together some outstanding events, CLE and socials for this year’s conference. The hotel accommodations, CLE seminars and banquet will be at the Roosevelt Hotel in New Orleans starting on Thursday the 9th of September 2010 and ending Saturday the 11th of September. If you want to stay over on Saturday night, you’ll be able to get the special rate we’ve secured for our members that weekend.

The Saints have their opening regular season game on the 9th of September, at home, against the Minnesota Vikings. The Bench Bar committee is in the process of securing a venue for Bench Bar participants to gather on Thursday night for a “Who Dat Party” and enjoy the game. On Friday, we will have the usual Judicial Roundtable breakfast followed by a full day of seminars (off ering you 6.5 hours of CLE credit) with an

impressive line-up of speakers. Our traditional Friday night banquet will be themed with Saint’s colors and the spirit of New Orleans and will be held in the Roosevelt’s famous Blue Room.

Because we’ll be in the Who Dat Nation for the Saints season opener, space will be limited in the Big Easy. Although we are normally able to secure rooms for additional participants up to the week before the conference, we will not be able to do that this year. The Roosevelt wants a number for our block of rooms yesterday, and will not hold any unconfi rmed rooms after a cutoff date 3 weeks prior to the event. So, if you intend on coming to the 2010 Bench Bar Conference, please let the bar association know your intent today so we can up the block of rooms and register as soon as possible.

The past few months have been

particularly hard for me in my personal life. As most of you are aware my Mother passed away in May after battling cancer. While I am still adjusting to the loss I am so very grateful to all the members of the Association who have been caring and supportive of me. The outpouring of sympathy cards, positive thoughts and prayers has been overwhelming. When something like this happens you feel alone but I can say that I am truly blessed to have so many people who care about me enough to feel the need to express sympathy to me in a personal way. Thank you to each one of you.

I want to especially thank the Board of Directors for allowing me personal time off prior to my Mother’s passing so that I could care for her. I will always cherish the last days I was able to spend with my mom and fondly remember reminiscing with her some of my “less than stellar” adventures from my childhood. I realize that other employers may not have been so accommodating and generous with time off and I want everyone to know that I am truly grateful to work for such a wonderful group of people.

It‘s Summertime! The staff and I plan to focus on the building and enjoy this slow time of year for the organization. We recently took a day to do some late spring cleaning and get the offi ce organized and clean. This is your building and I want to make sure that it will always be a place that each member will be proud of and feel at home.

I hope each of you has a fabulous Summer. Take a great vacation and make plans to attend the Bench Bar Conference in September.

Given the continued revelry and

excitement resulting from the New Orleans Saints’ performance and victory in this year’s Super Bowl, it seemed appropriate to have the Bench Bar Conference return to New Orleans and to give this year’s Conference the title of “Who Dat Going to the Bench Bar 2010.” The Conference is scheduled for Thursday through Saturday, September 9th to 11th.

This year’s event will follow a Saints Super Bowl related theme. Given this theme, the members of the Bench Bar Committee were provided an unexpected surprise when the National Football League chose to have its inaugural game of the 2010-2011 football season held in New Orleans between our hometown Saints and their National Football Conference championship foes, the Minnesota Vikings. Even more delightful was news that this game will take place on the evening of Thursday, September 9th! The Bench Bar Conference has become one of the Lafayette Bar Association’s premier events. Each year it seems as if the event becomes more enjoyable, thought-provoking and entertaining. Given this year’s theme and the fortune of having the Saints kick off the NFL season on the same evening our conference gets started, we cannot help but believe that this year will prove to be no diff erent.

While we have stayed at the Ritz-Carlton for the past several conferences, we have decided on a change of scenery. This year the conference will be held at the newly renovated Roosevelt Hotel, a member of the Waldorf Astoria collection of hotel properties. This location keeps us in the heart of New Orleans and allows all attendees to enjoy the local scenery, while providing fi rst-class accommodations and surroundings. A number of rooms have been booked at The Roosevelt. A recent notice went out to Bar members asking if they were interested in attending. If

you have not yet responded, yet plan on attending, please let the Bar Association know today so that additional rooms can be booked if necessary. Do so early given that there is high demand for hotel rooms at that time in connection with the Saints’ home-opener.

This year’s event will kick off with a “Who Dat” party to coincide with the Saints football game. The game will be televised and there will be cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. Please join us in cheering on the Saints during their fi rst step toward a repeat championship season. For those of you who are fortunate enough to get tickets, please join us for some tailgating on your way to the game. Friday is dedicated to our always informative CLE courses. The day will kick off with what has become a favorite amongst attendees – the Judicial Roundtable Breakfast. Members of the local judiciary have again made themselves available to discuss a wide range of topics and to answer questions posed to them concerning the practice of law in their courts. Lunch in the Conti Room at The Roosevelt will be off ered on Friday, while a Spouses Lunch at a location to be announced will also take place. On Friday evening, The Roosevelt’s Blue Room will serve as the setting for a more formal dinner entitled “A Black and Gold Aff air.” This function always proves to be a fi tting end to an enjoyable getaway with other local attorneys and judges. This year’s event is shaping up to be the most exciting Lafayette Bar Association Bench Bar Conference ever. It will provide a wonderful opportunity to network, earn CLE credits and enjoy some of the Big Easy’s fi nest cuisine, accommodations and entertainment. We hope to see you all there!

As both a member of the

Promulgator editorial board and the current President of

LYLA, I had the privilege of discovering some of the history

of LYLA in order to write the article on its inception. It

was interesting to me to speak with several of the founding

members to discuss their thoughts and ideas in creating the

young lawyers section of the Lafayette Bar Association. The

basic principles were then as they are today, to encourage

participation of the younger members of our bar in its

professional association. I am happy to be a part of such a

strong section of the LBA.

Recently, I attended a symposium of young lawyers sections

from around the state sponsored by the State Young Lawyers

Section. I was pleased to learn that the coordinators of this

symposium felt it was important for members of our section

to be present because we are considered one of the strongest

sections in the state. They wanted us to share with the

other newer and possibly less active sections reasons we are

successful and ideas for activities. I was proud to share with

those in attendance that our members are active because we

care about our profession and we care about our community.

Although we would like more of our members to become

actively involved in the association, those members who are

involved, really go out of their way to participate and make

sure each event is a success. I am so very thankful to all

who have participated and continue to participate in LYLA’s

events.

While at the symposium, we also received ideas from other

sections. In fact, LYLA is implementing one such idea this

month and is having a social function at Jeff erson Street

Pub on Thursday, June 17, 2010, to which all law clerks who

are working in the Lafayette area are invited. We ask that

law fi rms who have clerks here for the summer encourage

attendance by not only your law clerks but all members of

the fi rm. I hope to see you all there. Enjoy your summer!Lafayette Young Lawyers President

Lafayette Young Lawyers Association

As I prepared to write this

article, I began to wonder if the Lafayette Young Lawyer Association (LYLA) has become what the founding members of the association envisioned. As part of my “research”, I contacted several of those founding members and asked them to reach back in their minds to remember what their vision and/or purpose was for LYLA at the time. After speaking with them, I believe LYLA has fulfi lled that purpose and continues today to enrich the lives of young lawyers in our community.

When we at the Promulgator decided to compile a history of sorts of LYLA, I do not think we realized at the time that LYLA eff ectively turned 20 years old this year. Funny how these things happen. My research revealed that the Lafayette Young Lawyer Association’s fi rst meeting was in

WHERE THEY’VE BEEN

& WHERE THEY ARE GOING

Page 8: June 2010 Promulgator

Page 8The Promulgator June 2010 Volume 30 Issue 3

March of 1990. At that meeting, a resolution was passed, listing the purpose of LYLA as follows: “to promote the fellowship, education, and community service opportunities of the younger attorneys in the greater Lafayette area.” I imagine our founding members held various meetings that fi rst year in order to develop the by-laws and formalize the purpose of the association.

From a review of the current by-laws, it appears, the fi rst by-laws of LYLA were executed and made eff ective in 1991. The purpose of LYLA as listed in the by-laws are “(i) to stimulate the interest of young and recently admitted lawyers in the objects of the Lafayette [Parish] Bar Association, (ii) to promote professionalism and social understanding and cooperation among young and recently admitted lawyers, (iii) to contribute to the education and professional advancement of all lawyers in general and young and recently admitted lawyers in particular, and (iv) to take such other action and perform other functions as may be deemed appropriate.”

As I spoke with the founding members, I came to understand their vision was much the same as our vision is today. Mainly LYLA is a vehicle to promote participation of young and recently admitted lawyers in the Lafayette Bar Association (LBA). Therefore, younger members of the bar may not be as intimidated to participate and get involved since our peers will also be participating. It’s more likely that a younger lawyer will assume an offi cer position on the Lafayette Young Lawyer Board than on the LBA executive committee, or serve on a committee of LYLA than on a committee of the LBA. But, hopefully, that participation continues, the young lawyer wants to remain involved in the association, and in turn becomes an active member of the LBA.

LYLA is a growth opportunity for young lawyers, not only professionally but in the Lafayette community as a whole. LYLA is generally thought of as the community service arm of the LBA. We strive to do work in the community to promote our profession and to reach out to those in need. Community service remains an important goal of the association and is basically an aspect of almost every activity we undertake.

Although some of us “young lawyers” are not as young as we used to be, especially since the age of eligibility now reaches to the age of 40, (39 years old or younger or have been admitted for less than fi ve years, whichever is later) we still uphold the same general principles and the purpose of the association as set out almost 20 years ago. I hope we have reached and maybe even

On Friday, May 7th at Lafayette’s

Federal Courthouse, students from Northside High School and Cecelia High School participated in national law week activities designed to help students learn about the law, its impacts on their lives, and its potential as a career option.

Members of the press and the general public were welcomed to attend the mock trial that was held at the federal courthouse on and presided over by the Honorable Michael Hill. After taking a tour of the courthouse, students from Northside and Cecelia took on the roles of plaintiff , defendant, witnesses, and attorneys to try the fi ctional case of Manuel Rodriguez, a man who lost his home and his livelihood when the Poydras levy was dynamited during the fl oods of the late 1920’s in Louisiana.

Around the country each year, bar associations and high schools work together to create interactive and educational events to help acquaint students with the law, their local legal communities, and the litigation process. In Lafayette, the local bar association’s young lawyers group has taken on this role in our community. Lafayette Young Lawyer representative Cliff LaCour of Laborde & Neuner worked closely with Northside’s law studies director, Liz Tullier to create the mock trials and presentations that were hosted at Northside during law week.

surpassed all that the founding members envisioned.

A special thank you to Kirk Piccione, the fi rst President of the Lafayette Young Lawyers Association, and Steve Lanza, a founding member and President of Lafayette Young Lawyers Association from 1992-1993, for information provided.

My family and friends gathered to

cook a pig for Memorial Day – it was an old fashion cochon de lait. The fallen soldiers who have died defending our blessed country were commemorated along with the veterans who celebrated amongst us. On hand were veterans of various wars, moms and dads, lots of kids, engineers, landmen, real estate agents, builders, an appraiser, an artist, a physician and lawyers.

The scene could have been a snapshot of any social gathering here in Acadiana. Over the various aromas and sizzling heat, we talked about our livelihoods, the challenges we faced (including fl ipping a 60 lb 350 degree pig) and how fortunate we are to live in an area with an abundance of opportunity for fulfi llment, both professional and personally.

The LYLA socials throughout the year present a similar opportunity to visit, network and build relationships among colleagues within LYLA. More importantly, the socials provide a vehicle for members of the LYLA to interact with the entire Layette Bar Association membership, its judges and vice versa. To that end, please join us and our sponsors on June 17, 2010 at the Jeff erson Street Pub as we gather to celebrate the premier LYLA social of the summer featuring law clerks from local fi rms, their mentoring partners and associates and other young professionals from outside of the bar endeavoring to gain an appreciation of our profession.

As though scripted from a Nicholas Sparks book-turned-movie, this spring, the ladies of the Lafayette Bar Association Auxiliary held their annual Taste Treat luncheon at the decadent A. Hays Town home of Lea Ann and Mike Remondet. Each year, wives of local attorneys and some female attorneys dress in their fi nest spring fashions and gather to share recipes for the annual Taste Treat Cook Book which always includes some mouth-watering inventions that are sampled at the story book southern fete. This year’s event was a celebration of the organization’s 50th year in existence.

The southern punch and its eight fruity ingredients, engineered by Stephanie O’Pry kept party-goers from getting thirsty while the Caprese Bites prepared by Lisa Boudreaux added a bit of Italian fl air to the menu. The Southern Sugar Pecan Spinach Salad recipe from Darcy Logan should go down in history, and Judy Mahtook’s Shrimp Creole could not be topped.

Through the sales of event tickets, cook books, and taste treat customized aprons, the ladies generated funds to

support work of the bar foundation’s protective order panel which helps victims of domestic violence fi nd protection through a Title 46 protective order.

Lori Heaphy and Associates, Court Reporters recently hosted a last appointment social at Pamplona Tapas Bar for the attorneys and judges of the Lafayette Bar Association. With sangria and tapas aplenty, this social, infused with a laid back Spanish atmosphere helped the party goers wind down and enjoy their “last appointment” of the day in style.

Thank you to all of our members

for your continued support for our new building. Your donations and

encouragement have been a huge part of our success. Please see the

letter below from Mr. Chris Lee:

Dear Susan:

This letter contains both thanks and congratulations. Recall that I recently participated in a mediation at the Headquarters. This was my fi rst time to use the space in a professional/work setting.

First, to the “thank you” part: you and the whole gang made us feel right at home. Opposing counsel, both from New Orleans, were equally comfortable; and that speaks fro itself! The accommodations were beyond comparison. The work space was perfect, not only for caucusing but for anything and everything we needed to facilitate the mediation. The case settled. I almost want to give you credit for that as well.

To the congratulations part, you and your staff should walk proud daily. Not only do we have a fi rst-class facility, but we Lafayette lawyers carry ourselves with the added benefi t of fi rst-class, quality people assisting us. Your space is professional, functional and warm all at the same time. But not nearly as much as the folks working there.

Go LBA!Best Regards.Sincerely,Christopher T. Lee

LSBA Award

Marianna Broussard, the Chair of the

Lafayette Volunteer Lawyer advisory board, was recently honored with a Pro Bono Publico award at the Louisiana State Bar Association’s Pro Bono and Children’s Law Awards Ceremony by Sachida Raman, LSBA Access to Justice Committee Vice Chair. The award presentation was held on

Tuesday May 25th at the Louisiana Supreme Court building on Royal St. in New Orleans. Also presenting the award were Justice Bernette Joshua Johnson and LSBA President Kim Boyle. She was recognized for her service as chair of the LVL Advisory Committee which during her tenure as chairwoman, the committee updated and amended the LVL pro bono reference guide and composed instructions and family law pro se forms for the Lafayette Bar Association Kiosk. In 2009, Marianna accepted sixteen pro bono family law cases. Over the past fi ve year, she has litigated 51 other cases involving the care and custody of children, donating an estimated 800 pro bono hours. For eight years, Marianna has received the outstanding LVL award. She was named outstanding attorney in 2008, the Lafayette Foundations, top honor for excellence in Pro Bono practice. While mentoring other lawyers in family law matters and assisting LVL clients, Marianna still fi nds time to donate her legal services to community projects and participate in the Bar Foundation’s fundraising events.

Lisa Diane Hanchey :

Attorney and Freelance Journalist

Place of birth and hometown: Fort Polk, LA (birthplace; Dad was captain in the Army); Lake Charles, LA (hometown)

Education (high school, college and law school): Graduated A.M. Barbe High School in Lake Charles; graduated LSU and LSU law school

What was made you decide to go to law school? My Dad, Carl Hanchey, who passed away last year, was a very well-respected attorney in Lake Charles. He encouraged me to go to law school, saying that it was a great opportunity for women at the time. When I started law school in the 1980s, only about one-third of students were women; now, it’s over 50 percent. My brother, David, practices law in Lake Charles, and my fi rst cousin, Michelle Sorrells, practices in Baton Rouge.

Where do you work and what are your primary responsibilities there? I have clerked for U.S. Magistrate Judge C. Michael Hill since he started here nine years ago. I do research and writing, and handle calls from lawyers who just cannot get along!

Is this what you originally thought you would do when you were in law school? Kind of. I wanted to combine a legal career with writing, but was not aware of permanent clerkships at the time.

The Promulgator Editorial Committee has been told that you moonlight as a freelance writer. When and how did you start your journalistic career? I majored in News Editorial Journalism in undergraduate school at LSU. Between college and law school, I worked at Baton Rouge Business Report as its fi rst staff writer. I

started freelancing during law school (after my tortuous freshman year, of course).

What types of articles do you write and for what publications? I do almost any topic except legal, since it might create a confl ict with my day job. I’ve written about oil and gas, medicine, sugar cane, real estate,

technology, banking, food, art, travel, weddings, social events, obituaries, and personalities. Right now, I write primarily for The Independent Weekly, Acadiana LifeStyle, and Louisiana Medical News. I have also written for the Promulgator, LSU Alumni Magazine, The Times, L Magazine, Savvy & Sage, Acadiana Moms, and Acadiana Health.

How does your career at the federal courthouse aff ect your writing? (time management, article topics, etc.). I usually do interviews early morning, on my lunch break, after 5, or on weekends. I’ve done phone interviews as early as 7 a.m. and late as 10 p.m. Recently, I did one on a Sunday with an artist at his plantation in Jeanerette. What a trip!

About how many articles do you write each month? 3-5

Have you ever thought about writing any books? Yes, whenever I fi nd the time! I have a couple of ideas that I’d like to work on if I ever get to a beach house in Florida.

Have you won any awards or essay writing contests? I placed third in the La. Press Association awards in the investigational reporting category. I won a state essay contest as a kid. I think the topic was the dangers of drinking or

something like that . . .
