President’s Message

First of all, let me once again say

how honored and privileged I am to be able to serve as President of the Lafayette Bar Association for the next year. Nora and I also want to thank all of you who were able to share the evening with us at the installation banquet. I spoke that night about the need we all have to give of our time and talents and thankfully, the LBA has many ways to assist you in fulfi lling that need.

For professional development we have a wonderful assortment of end of year CLE opportunities. You should have received a schedule in the mail but you may also sign onto the website to check topics and availability. We have the ability for our members to sign up and pay online. If the Christmas season has renewed your interest in service, we have a continuing need for volunteers to take on pro bono cases through our LVL program. Members of the Family Law section are available as mentor partners to assist anyone who volunteers for a family law case. The LBA offi ce is also collecting used books for a library program at the State prison for women in St. Gabriel. Just drop off the books directly with our caring staff during normal offi ce hours through Christmas.

Speaking of service to our community I would like to congratulate Gary McGoffi n, who was awarded Lafayette’s 2010 Civic Cup for, among other things, his many years of service with the boy scouts. Gary is a past president of the Association and is a wonderful example of selfl ess giving. Don’t forget to put down December 16th on your calendars to come by the offi ce and celebrate some Christmas cheer with your fellow attorneys.

Immediately after the Holidays we get right back on track with our Court opening ceremonies. You may recall this event used to be scheduled in September but with weather and school reopening issues, the Court and Bar decided to move this on a permanent basis to January. You should have received your personal invitation already from Bishop Jarrell for the Red Mass scheduled for Friday, Jan 7th at noon. A luncheon will be held immediately afterward at the Cathedral center. The court opening will be held at the Courthouse beginning at 3 pm, immediately followed by another reception sponsored by Jones Walker.

All of these opportunities for service, fellowship, professional development and just plain fun are made possible by a vibrant, committed association of caring professionals. I look forward to sharing this year with all of you.

Unveiling

LBA’s New Web Site:

www.lafayettebar.orgFollowing a successful

soft launch in September, the Lafayette Bar Association is pleased to offi cially announce the launch of its newly designed and upgraded website, www.lafayettebar.org. With this newly polished presence on the Web, the site’s 2200 visitors each month can not only learn about the association, but they can interact with it. When visiting www.lafayettebar.org, you can register for events, reserve space in the mediation center, fl ip through a digital version of their newsletter, the Promulgator, make a donation, or even renew membership by paying dues online.

For the public, the new web site is positioned and organized to help those seeking assistance from the legal community access to information and resources. They can read about the association’s sections, committees and community outreach programs, fi nd an attorney using the lawyer referral service, or they can look through the news section to see what’s being said in the media about the association and its members.

Although, the new site is indeed only a small component of the many programs and events that make the bar association in Lafayette what it is today, it represents so much of what Lafayette Bar Association leadership is working towards in developing increased services to the community and benefi ts to its members. We hope you’ll come take a look!

Happy Holidays from “the Holliday”! I hope each of you is enjoying the season and looking forward to ringing in the New Year.

In this issue of the Promulgator, the Awards and Recognition section honors LBA Past President Gary McGoffi n for receiving the Civic Cup Award. Gary is not only an extraordinary person but someone who is near and dear to my heart. Gary was on the search committee who hired me many, many moons ago and with his leadership, creativity, and vision he has helped to shape this organization into what it is today. Gary was my mentor and still continues to mentor me all be it the location has changed from the LBA offi ce to Café V. Gary is an a-typical volunteer who never wants to fade into the background but rather is always willing to contribute to the success of our organization. I am so proud of you Gary for receiving our city’s highest honor. No one is more deserving than you!

Each year I use the December issue to take a look back at the year and give special thanks to those members who went above and beyond and help to make me “look good”. Boyd Anderson, our formidable Bench Bar Chair. New Orleans, The Roosevelt and Galatoire’s for the Saints opening game… it doesn’t it get any better? Miles Matt, who surprisingly still takes my phone calls and came to the building and helped me change light bulbs. Maggie Simar, for scheduling all the Beyond the Bench cle’s and making my life easy, Aaron Allen, for donating and awesome motorized screen for the conference room and bring technology to the 21st century over here. Joe Giglio Jr, for stepping up and getting back on the LBA board. It’s refreshing to have a past president serve on the board and each month Joe shares his wisdom, whit, and energy with other board members.

Finally, my staff . I have the privilege to work with an awesome group of ladies who are willing to do whatever it takes to make me look good. I oftentimes get credit for the hard work they do and I want to make sure that our members know how lucky we are to have them. See ya next year!

Like most people who question, “Who am I?”, “Why do I exist?, while looking for purpose and meaning, the Lafayette Bar Auxiliary is doing the same this year. For those who may not know the Lafayette Bar Auxiliary is a membership organization for the spouses of attorneys or female attorneys and our organization has been in existence for over 20 years.

When I say your Auxiliary, I mean that our organization exists to add to and compliment the Lafayette Bar Association. We want to help and support the LBA and all the good work accomplished by its members.

In re-examining our mission and focus, a committee from the bar auxiliary brought ideas to Susan Holliday and the bar staff . I am excited to say the Lafayette Bar Auxiliary will be taking a hands on approach and helping out with some of the Association’s major events such as the Clay Shoot , Golf Tournament and Mock Trial.

With this being said we need all “hands on deck”. This is where members of the bar can assist us. We want to personally invite each member’s spouse to either join the bar auxiliary or become more active in our organization. Come to our socials, attend our meetings, help support the legal community by volunteering at an upcoming event. Whether your wife is looking for social outings or projects with a philanthropic purpose, the Auxiliary can be that avenue. The Auxiliary is fi lled with great members who have a common bond, to support our husbands and the legal profession. Please consider it and contact me, Glenda Matt Bar Liaison and Membership Chair for more details. Membership is a great way to promote “OUR” profession.

The Lafayette Bar Association

had volunteer attorneys

on hand on Saturday October 23rd to help members of the Lafayette police department obtain wills, living wills, and powers of attorney through a partnership with a national organization called Wills for Heroes and the Louisiana State Bar Association Young Lawyers Association. Wills for Heroes is a non-profi t group that organizes attorney volunteers in providing essential legal documents free of charge to our nation’s fi rst responders. By helping fi rst responders plan now, they ensure their family’s legal aff airs are in order before a tragedy hits.

It only takes about 45 minutes for an offi cer to discuss their plans and fi ll out paperwork with the guidance of an LBA volunteer attorney. Thanks to software and technology provided by the

American Bar Association, the

process is simple and effi cient. The offi cers come in shifts and by the end of the day; about

twenty to thirty offi cers have left the Lafayette Bar Association with their wills complete and plans in place for their loved ones.

“Providing law enforcement and fi re department personnel with counsel while drafting wills free of charge is a very noble and worthy contribution to the community,” said Police Chief P.M. Hogan a program participant from Eager, AZ.

The Lafayette Bar Association, a local non-profi t professional association for attorneys and judges is proud to off er their unique skills to the members of our community who do so much for our well-being and safety. Although these preparations can be unpleasant to think about, having a will and power of attorney in place can provide peace of mind and comfort for the spouses and children of offi cers in the line of fi re every day.

The 501(c)(3) charitable non-profi t Wills for Heroes Foundation supports these Wills programs, giving back to the community and “protecting those who protect us.”

No one is more surprisedthan Andre’ Doguet himself that he was installed as the 2010-2011 President of the Lafayette Bar Association. As a solo family law practitioner who started out his legal career in Rayne it was hard to imagine that one day he would be the president of the Lafayette Bar Association which represents over 925 attorneys and members of the local judiciary. In the early days of practicing law, Andre’ recalls how busy he was developing his practice and making a name for himself. There was no time to commit to other things, especially bar service. As his practice advanced, Andre’ realized the importance of giving back to your profession and volunteering, “Once you start, it grows on you. If we don’t care, then why should anyone else.”

Andre’ began his bar service path by becoming an active member in the LBA’s Family Law section eventually becoming President

of the section. As President of the Family Law section he held a designated seat on the board of directors for the Lafayette Bar Association. Andre’ enjoyed getting involved with the entire bar association and the ability to interact with other members of the legal community who practiced outside of the area of family law. After his Family Law Section presidency term was over he stated he was “so inspired by other attorneys who cared enough about their profession to give up their time and energy to serve” that he put his name in the hat and was elected to a three year term on the LBA board of directors which eventually lead him to become an offi cer of the Association and now President.

Andre’ hopes that by the end of his term, more members will take the leap as he did and become more involved with the Lafayette Bar Association. Andre’s goal is to get people involved, “not just formally participating in bar activities, get

LBA 2010-2011 President:

Page 11 The Promulgator December 2010Volume 30 Issue 6

them involved in caring about the profession and doing things in whatever fashion they believe are good for them to help them promote the profession, make it better, or make the individual lawyers better in their own way.”

Andre’ also hopes to continue to strengthen the community service plans that are already in place and build upon the Association’s motto of Motivated by Justic , Inspired by Service. He especially wants to increase participation in Lafayette Volunteer Lawyers, a program near and dear to Andre’s heart. As a family law attorney he knows too well the need within the Lafayette community for free legal advice especially in the area of family law. He takes great pride in the fact the LBA’s family law section agrees each year to take a certain number of cases from Lafayette Volunteer Lawyers and has recently instituted a mentor program for members who volunteer for LVL divorce

cases.

Our new bar leader was born and raised in Basile, Louisiana until right before the fi fth grade when his parents moved him to Crowley to take better teaching jobs. He graduated from Crowley high school and went to Louisiana State University and got on track to become a doctor. Oftentimes, annoyed with studying for his sciences, he would pick up books on alternative subject matters such as liberal arts or history and breeze through it. It soon became apparent that a career in the medical fi eld did not exactly suit him. Andre’ changed majors in 1983 and graduated from LSU with a Bachelor of Science in General Studies. He then entered law school and graduated in 1986 from the Paul M. Hebert School of Law.

After graduating from law school, Andre’ moved to Lafayette but commuted to Rayne where he worked at Cline, Miller, & Richard for 10 years. During that time he began working as the attorney for Acadia Parish while doing quite a bit of divorce work for the fi rm. In 1996, Andre’ started his own practice and continued to work in Rayne until 2003 when he moved into his current offi ce on St. John Street which is conveniently located behind his house.

Andre’ has been married to LBA member, Nora Stelly with Allen & Gooch for almost 16 years (together for 26 years). Nora taught at Crowley High School and taught Andre’s older brother. Later, she went to LSU law school where Andre’ was also attending. Although they didn’t have any classes together while in law school, they reconnected and began dating in 1984.

Andre’ is a very close to his family. He has an older brother with three children, a younger sister with two, and a younger brother. Although they have no children, Andre’ and Nora share their home with their handsome English Bulldog, Dudley. He will be 10 years old in February. Dudley demands their attention as soon as they get home from work which is just what they were looking for when thinking about getting a dog. They explained, “We got Dudley because we were both spending too much time on the law when we got home in the evenings and we decided we needed something, not only to take our mind off of it but to be responsible for.”

In his spare time, Andre’ loves to cook for Nora so much that he has restaurant quality cooking equipment in both their home and vacation home. They enjoy reading and traveling overseas. They also spend weekends at their house in Hidden Hills. It is on a lake and although they don’t fi sh, they take pleasure in the relaxation it brings them.

It is an honor to welcome Andre’ Doguet as the Lafayette Bar Association’s 2010-2011 President. He is an excellent model for the professionalism of our association and will be able to strengthen our legal community through his leadership. On behalf of the Bar Association, we look forward to the excellent year we know is ahead under his presidency.

Full Name: Michelle DeLoach Brooks

Place of birth and hometown: I was born & raised in Lafayette and moved to Thibodaux 4 years ago after getting married to a Thibodaux attorney, Beau Brooks

How long have you been an attorney, and what schools did you attend? I have been practicing for 6 years. I graduated from Lafayette High in 1997, ULL with a degree in Finance in 2001 and LSU Law in 2004, where I received a JD and a BCL (Bachelors in Civil Law).

The Promulgator Editorial Committee has been told that you have just started a new business. Please tell us about your endeavor and how it is going so far. Wee-peats is an upscale children’s consignment boutique which sells higher end, gently worn or new clothing, shoes, strollers, gear, nursery decor and bedding, and large motorized toys. We also sell new unique burp cloth sets and ready-made or custom tutus. Wee-peats started one month ago and we have already received over 500 items on consignment and sold hundreds of dollars worth of items.

What gave you the idea to start this type of business? I gave birth to Ramey Clare 7 months ago and I was overwhelmed at the amount of clothing she received as gifts and how much money people spent on clothing. Throughout these past several months shopping for her, I realized how expensive children’s clothing is and how this clothing is only worn a few times or never worn at all. That is when my good friend, Ashley Simoneaux, and I decided to join forces

and open Wee-peats. We felt that Thibodaux and the surrounding area needed a place where other moms could save money and make money, especially in this economy.

How can our readers shop and sell through Wee Peats? You can “like” Wee-peats on Facebook or e-mail us at [email protected] or call me at 985-414-9192 to set up an appointment. We are currently working on a website which will launch at the beginning of the year. Who knows, one day we may get a store front! If you do not live in Thibodaux or the surrounding area, we would be happy to make arrangements so that you can consign and/or buy with Wee-peats.

How do you balance your time between family, work, and your budding entrepreneurship? I have a wonderful husband and family that helps me take care of my beautiful baby girl, so that I can practice law full time and start a business! I also have a great boss, Keith Borne, who has allowed me to work from home. Although I am busy, I would not change anything for the world because I am having a blast in my new endeavor!

Do you have anything else to add about your business or career? Although Wee-peats is based in Thibodaux, we are planning on having several shows a year. I work in Lafayette one day a week and my family still lives here. If anyone is interested in hosting a show, we would love to so please give us a call!
