StudyGender and Electoral Communication: How Differences in Non-verbal and Verbal Behavior Affect Evaluations of Male and Female Politicians
2013
Findings• There is little difference in perceptions of men or women based
on non-verbals and para-verbals• Non-verbals have influence on perceived levels of leadership
but little influence on perceived levels of intelligence or competence
• Female candidates who are perceived as confident score higher marks overall than male counterparts who display equal levels of confidence
• Female candidates who are perceived as lacking confidence score lower marks overall than male counterparts who display equal levels of non-confidence
Bottom line for female politicians…

Dealing with nerves
Dealing with nerves
• Prepare• What questions will be asked?• Who are the reporters?• What is your message or narrative?• Is this controversial (never mind whether it should be – is it?)• How does this interview reinforce your personal brand?• What is the headline?
Dealing with nerves
• Take a deep breath• Remember you are the
expert• Pause – Answer – Stop
(don’t keep talking)• Emotion is more powerful
than facts – use it if appropriate
