Aussie Skin Training Manual (Rev. 7) 02/04/19 1

Aussie Skin Training ManualHeavy-Duty HDPE Sheet Waterproofing Membrane

What is a pre-applied waterproofing system?

• Pre-applied vs. Post Applied

• How this system works

– Must be a continuous membrane

– Concrete must be able to bond to it

– Must have an acceptable substrate to lay the product on or hang it to.

Aussie Skin componentsWhat is each component for and where or when is it used

• Aussie Skin

• Double Sided Tape

• Sanded Tape

• Detail Strip

• Aussie Seal M

ToolsNecessary tools and safe working habits

• Sharp knife.

• Metal Pressure Roller – this system depends on “pressure sensitive” bonding.

• Heat Gun (optional, only needed when it is cold).

Factory SeamHow to do a Factory Seam.

• Remove the black plastic film from the factory lap to expose the adhesive.

• Lay down the 2nd layer of Skin over the exposed Adhesive. (leave 1/8”-1/4” of adhesive exposed) Roll the steel roller over the 2nd layer of skin several times.

• MUST apply sufficient pressure to ensure proper bonding. Roll steel roller over seam a min 3 times.

• Q.C. - Verify seam is properly bonded (If not, fix as necessary).

Non-Factory SeamHow to do a Non-Factory Seam.

• Use Aussie Skin Double Sided Tape for Non-Factory Seams

• Aussie Skin Tape must overlap factory lap adhesive and itself in transitions.

• Prior to installing tape, first take a stiff brush and remove any loose or excess minerals.

• Remove the plastic film from one side of the double-sided tape.

• Lay down the Double-Sided Tape on the sanded side of the first layer of Aussie Skin.

• Thoroughly compress the double-sided tape onto the sanded side of the aussie skin using avm’s approved steel rollers. (Roll the steel roller over the tape several times with sufficient pressure to ensure proper bonding.)

• Install a 3/16” bead of Aussie Seal M where top edge of sheet and factory adhesive meet.

• Carefully remove 2nd protective film from double sided tape before applying 2nd layer of skin over it.

• Lay down the 2nd layer of Skin over the exposed double-Sided Tape. (Leave 1/8”-1/4” of tape exposed) Roll the steel roller over the 2nd layer of skin several times while applying sufficient pressure to ensure proper bonding.

• Verify seam is complete and properly bonded.

• Q.C. - Verify seam is properly installed (If not, fix as necessary)

Detail StripUse the Detail Strip in situations where the two skin sheets won’t come together nicely such as in transitions, 45° Angles, etc.

• MUST remove black plastic film.

• Install Detail strip as noted on detail #6001.

• MUST apply sufficient pressure to ensure proper bonding. Roll pressure roller over seam a min 3 times.

• Overlaps must be a minimum 3 inches wide in all areas.

• Q.C. - Verify seams are properly installed (If not, fix as necessary).

Inside CornerHow to create an inside corner with Detail Strip or Aussie Skin

• Use a small piece of Aussie Skin or Detail strip to create the inside corner.

• Use Sanded Tape to hold down the folds of the inside corner.

• Use a small piece of Double Sided Tape to bond the corner piece to the boot so it won’t move or shift.

• Q.C. – Corners are high risk areas. Verify corners are properly sealed before proceeding.

Outside CornerHow to create an Outside corner with Detail Strip or Aussie Skin

• Use a small piece of Aussie Skin or Detail strip to create the Outside corner.

• Use Sanded Tape to seal the seams of the outside corner.

• Use the outside corner boot to provide extra protection in the corner (Whenever possible).

• Use a small piece of Double Sided Tape to bond the corner piece to the boot so it won’t move or shift.

• Q.C. – Corners are high risk areas. Verify corners are properly sealed before proceeding.

Sanded TapeUse on corner details, vertical lagging and other critical areas.

SealantThe approved Sealant is AVM Aussie Seal M

• Make sure the Sealant has not expired, is fresh and in good condition before use. If not, discard.

• Make sure to store the Sealant out of direct sunlight, between 50°F – 75°F.

• Sealant may be applied directly to Sanded Side or HDPE side of the Aussie Skin.

• Sealant may be applied directly to galvanized metal, steel, aluminum, copper, cast iron, PVC and ABS pipes.

• Sealant can be applied directly onto Cured Aussie Membrane 500/502/520.

• Apply liberally as needed to achieve a complete/proper seal.

• Concrete may be placed on wet sealant (it will cure under wet concrete). However, make sure to protect the wet sealant from being damaged during the concrete pour.

• In extremely dry environments, local humidification may be needed to initiate curing.

• Low temperatures will retard the cure reaction and heat will accelerate the cure reaction.

Cold WeatherCold Weather Installation Instructions (Between 20°F – 40°F)

• In cold weather, adhesives and sealant don’t bond as well (reduced adhesion strength) and will require additional procedures to ensure proper bonding and performance.

• Make sure to keep all Aussie skin accessories and sealant warm (approx. 70°F) A warm room or tent work well.

• If feasible, store Aussie Skin rolls in heated areas as well.

• Optionally can run a Leister heat welding machine over the seams as follows:

– Use Leister Model Verimat 2.

– Set Temperature to its lowest setting.

– Run the machine at a comfortable pace (optionally can run it at the top speed).

– Check for proper adhesion once installed.

• Detail Strips: Use the same cold weather installation procedures as factory and non-factory laps.

• Applying double sided tapes to metal and metal I-Beams. Pre-heat the metal surfaces by lightly going over them with a heat gun or torch. Then immediately apply the double-sided tape to the metal surfaces and roll over the tapes with the steel pressure roller. Check for proper adhesion once installed.

• Applying the sanded tapes – keep sanded tapes warm prior to use. Apply the sanded tapes and roll with pressure roller while still warm. If needed, use a heat gun to blow hot air over them while rolling the pressure roller over them to improve adhesion. Check for proper adhesion once installed.

• Applying the sealant in cold weather (20°F - 50°F) keep the sealant warm prior to use. Apply the sealant while still warm. If needed, use a heat gun to blow hot air to pre-heat the substrates. Check for proper adhesion once installed. Sealant should be allowed to fully cure before exposed to hydrostatic pressures. In very cold weather this may take 14+ days. Therefore, make sure to keep dewatering systems active for a minimum 30 days after sealant installations.
