5.0 TERRAIN

5.1 Earthworks: Santon Redoubt Designer’s NOTE: On Napoleon’s orders a redoubt was built on

top of Santon Hill and the east face of the hill was scarped to improved the field of fire and prevent a direct assault. 5.1.1 Facing: A unit in an earthwork can be considered to be inside or outside of an earthwork. All units in a stack must be inside or outside of the Redoubt. Only units which are inside the Redoubt receive the defensive benefits of the earthwork. The determination of inside or outside is made by the facing of the units in the earthwork, even when the units are in Disorder or PGD. Units in the earthwork face a hexside. The units are considered in the earthwork if they are facing the center of the three hexsides of the redoubt, otherwise they are considered to be outside of the earthwork.. Infantry units in Good Order outside of the earthwork are assumed to be in Column, unless in Disorder and may not form Square even in reaction to an enemy Charge. Infantry units inside an earthwork are deployed with their front side up. They may not be deployed in Skirmish Order while inside the earthwork, though they may move through it while in Skirmish Order. 5.1.2 The Santon Redoubt has 3 front and 3 rear hexsides. Units inside the redoubt face the center of the three front hexsides and have the same facing as the redoubt. 5.1.3 Stacking: For unit inside of an earthwork, a maximum of one battalion, or 6 increments of infantry, and one battery, of any size, may stack in an earthwork hex. For units outside of an earthwork, a maximum of one battalion or 6 increments of infantry and/or artillery may stack in the hex. Infantry units in regimental Presentation must break down into battalions before entering an earthwork, including for Advance after Assault. 5.1.4 Cavalry may not enter the Earthwork hexes, either during movement, Advance after Charge or in Pursuit. They may, however, still Charge and Mêlee units in Earthworks. And even though cavalry units may not enter an earthwork they still Disorder in the “Advance after Charge” step following a Mêlée against units inside the earthworks.

NOTE: For the Règlements de l’An XXX, a leader is not required for units to stack in an Earthwork hex.

5.1.5 Zones of Influence: Zones of Influence extend into and out of Earthwork hexes. 5.1.6 Line of Sight: Earthworks do not block Line of Sight. 5.1.7 Formation: Units in Earthworks, are in a kind of General Order, except that their facing and front, flank and rear hexsides conform to the type of Earthwork in which they are deployed. Units in Earthworks may not form Line, Column or Square. 5.1.8 Fire Combat: Units inside an Earthwork fired on through the front hexsides of an earthwork receive the defensive fire benefit of the earthwork. Units inside an Earthwork fired on through flank or rear hexsides have the fire defense of units in Column in clear terrain. Units outside of an earthwork use the column on the Fire Defense Chart for Clear terrain.

5.1.9 Firing from Inside an Earthwork : One infantry and one artillery unit may fire from an earthwork. Infantry units use their printed Fire Value. 5.1.10 Assaulting Earthworks: The Santon earthwork may not be assaulted through its front hexsides. 5.1.11 Charging Earthworks: Cavalry may only Charge the Santon earthwork through its rear hexsides. Cavalry which successfully charges units in an earthwork do not advance into the earthwork in the Advance after Charge step and since there is no advance there are no Opportunity Reactions. However, the units which Charged still become Disordered, if not already Disordered. There is no Pursuit of units in earthworks. Skip the Pursuit step of the Cavalry Charge vs. Infantry and Artillery Mêlée Mêléeprocedure. After the Mêlée results are executed, if any, the cavalry then may conduct Cavalry Regroup movement if allowed and the Charge ends.

Designer’s NOTE: For the most part the earthworks were relatively small and do not occupy the entire hex. Indeed in many cases not all the troops and guns positioned at the earthworks could fit inside and were deployed beside or behind. In addition the earthworks were relatively short in height and numerous shot and shell passed over. Also, keep in mind the earthworks are not unassailable bastions of defense. Without an active defender mounting counterattacks and sending in reinforcements they are merely piles of dirt.

5.1.12 French Artillery in the Santon Redoubt does not consume ammunition.

NOTE: Ammunition rules only apply to players using the Règlements de l’An XXX.

5.2 Ditch The two bold hexside just east of Telnitz are the Telnitz ditch. 5.2.1 These hexsides are impassable and no mêlée combat is possible. Fire combat is unaffected. 5.2.2 Zones of Influence do not extend across ditch hexsides.

5.3 Bridges and Fords All the streams are frozen so bridges and fords have no effect.

5.4 Slopes Designer’s NOTE: The terrain on which Austerlitz was fought consisted on a series of mainly marshy valleys (well frozen) surrounding the Pratzen plateau, most of the slopes to the plateau were steep enough to cause formed units problems.

5.4.1 A hex that has a slope hexside is considered to be the other type of terrain in the hex for the purposes of fire defense. 5.4.2 The cost to enter a hex across the slope hexside is the cost of the terrain in the hex plus the cost of the slope hexside. 5.4.3 Cavalry may not Charge, and hence may not Mêlée, units across slope hexsides. Nor may cavalry pursue retreating units across slope hexsides. 5.4.4 Infantry defending against assaults exclusively from units assaulting up slope hexsides receive a +6 Roll to Stand modifier. 5.4.5 Infantry units assaulting up a slope suffer a -6 modifier to their Roll to Close.

5.5 Special Structures There are two Special Structures near Sokolnitz. The single village hex north of Sokolnitz is the castle (walled 18th century manor house and garden). The five-story Granary is the righthand (east) of the two hexes south of the three hexes at the north end of the village. The following rules supersede the series rules regarding Special Structures. 5.5.1 Line of Sight: Special Structures block line of sight. 5.5.2 Zones of Influence: Zones of Influence do not extend into Special Structure hexes.

5.5.3 Stacking: Up to 6 increments or 1 battalion of infantry may stack in a Special Structure hex. Units may voluntarily stack in a Special Structure without the presence of a friendly leader. 5.5.3.1 Regimental Presentation: Infantry units in Regimental Presentation with more than 6 increments, and which have battalion counters, must break down into battalions before entering a Special Structure hex. If more than one battalion enters they may total no more than 6 increments. These rules apply for all forms of movement voluntary or involuntary. 5.5.4 Movement: Only infantry may deploy in a Special Structure hex. Cavalry and artillery may not enter a Special Structure hex, except to pass through it and only if they enter and exit via a road/highway or trail in Road Column. A unit that passes through the hex may not stop in the hex, and may not enter the hex unless its current movement potential is sufficient to allow it to continue into the adjoining hex. 5.5.5 Formation: A unit deployed in a Special Structure is always considered as if in Square as long as it is in good order (not Disordered or PGD). It thus has the facing and Zone of Influence of a Square, the firing pattern and fire effects of a Square, and the morale modifier of a Square. Unlike a Square a unit in a Special Structure does not have to subscribe to the 3 increments minimum to receive these benefits. Units may not employ Skirmish order while in a Special Structure. No unit may be deployed in a Special Structure and in some other hex. 5.5.6 Fire Combat: Infantry units firing on a Special Structure halve their fire values. Artillery firing on a Special Structure does not receive the Point Blank Range benefit and use its Long Range Fire Value regardless of the actual distance. Regardless of the size of defending forces, a maximum of 6 increments may be used to fire from a Special Structure. 5.5.7 Assault: Only infantry may assault a Special Structure hex (that is Cavalry may neither Charge or Mêlée units in Special Structures). Only 6 increments may assault or defend a Special Structure hex. Regardless of the size of the forces, only six parts of the attacking or defending forces may be used for attack or defense. Infantry assaulting one of these hexes does not have its Mêlée Value modified as if attacking a Square. 5.5.7.1 Roll to Stand: Units in Special Structures automatically Stand when assaulted. They must still roll the dice, however, to determine if they deliver effective Defensive Fire and receive any Defensive Shifts (but do not Disorder for Roll to Stand failure). 5.5.7.2 Sapeurs: Sapeurs stacked with infantry in an assault on a Special Structure hex will cause a one column shift in their favor on the Assaut et Mêlée Chart. They may be part of the assault, may assault the hex without the infantry, or simply be stacked with an assaulting unit without taking part in the assault themselves, and still cause this column shift. 5.5.7.3 Assault and Mêlée Results: Defending units ignore all DR and DD# combat results on the Assaut et Mêlée Chart, instead they lose one increment from their strength.

5.6 Marsh / Swamp Marshes are frozen, and treated as clear terrain.

5.7 Chapel and Villages 5.7.1 Line of Sight: Chapel & Village hexes block Line of Sight. 5.7.2 Stacking: Chapel & Village hexes require formed units, (i.e. those not in Skirmish Order, Disorder or PGD), to enter General Order upon entering. 5.7.3 Cavalry Charge: Cavalry may not pursue retreating units into Chapel & Village hexes. The Pursuit stops at the Chapel & Village’s edge.

5.8 Woods & Pheasantry 5.8.1 Line of Sight: Woods & Pheasantry hexes block Line of Sight. 5.8.2 Stacking: Woods & Pheasantry hexes require formed units, (i.e. those not in Skirmish Order, Disorder or PGD), to enter General Order upon entering.

Page 4: Austerlitz Rev2 Letter

La Bataille d’Austerlitz 4

✸✸✸✸✸

5.8.3 Cavalry Charge: Cavalry may not pursue retreating units into Woods & Pheasantry hexes. The Pursuit stops at the Woods or Pheasantry’s edge. 5.8.4 Artillery may only enter Woods hexes through connecting trail or road hexes. They may not unlimber in a Woods hex.

5.9 Pheasantry Wall The Pheasantry is surrounded by a wall.

Designer’s NOTE: It is possible that during the battle sapeurs knocked holes in the wall to allow artillery to be emplaced, but there is no written evidence of this.

5.9.1 The wall may not be crossed by Artillery. 5.9.2 The wall has no effect on fire combat. 5.9.3 The wall has a Roll to Close modifier of -6. 5.9.4 The wall has a Roll to Stand modifier of +6. 5.9.5 Cavalry that conducts Charge Movement across the wall or attempts to Mêlée units as a result of Charge on the other side of the wall Disorder and then complete their Charge or Mêlée in that state.

NOTE: Charge movement across the wall only applies to the Règlement de l’An XXX. Players using the Règlement des Marie Louises would use regular movement to cross the wall and then Charge when

adjacent to the target.

5.10 General Order The following terrain requires formed units to enter General Order when entering:

• Sokolnitz Castle • Woods and Pheasantry • Village and Chapel

5.11 Depots 5.11.1 French: The hex of the Route de Brunn road leading off the west map edge is the French Depot hexes. 5.11.2 French III Corps: The French III Corps may resupply with 5 hexes of set-up location L. 5.11.3 Allies: The hex of the Route d’Olmutz road leading off the east map edge is Austro Russian Depot hexes.

5.12 Terrain and Artillery Ricochet Artillery fire which targets the following hexes terminates

in them. Ricochet fire may bounce into, but not through the following hexes.

• The Santon Redoubt • Wood hexes • Pheasantry hexes • Sokolnitz castle • Upslope hexsides NOTE: Artillery Ricochet only applies to the Règlements de l’An

XXX.

6.0 COMMAND The Organization and Display Charts reveal the command structure of the armies. Refer to them as necessary.

6.1 Austro Russian Brigade Leaders Brigade leaders are included in the Advanced Guard(s). Brigade leaders add an extra step in the chain of command. Brigade leaders may form an MU consisting of the units of their brigade within their Command Span. Brigade leaders have a Command Span of 2 hexes (adjacent hex plus one). For a unit of a brigade to be In Command it must be within the brigade leader’s Command Span of two hexes. For a brigade leader to be In Command he must be within the three hex

Command Span of his division leader and thereby be eligible to form part of a larger MU. As with the component divisions of a corps, brigades may form part of a division sized MU consisting of all of his constituent brigade leaders within his Command Span and all units within their respective brigade leader’s Command Span. A division leader does not need to be “Activated” to form a division sized MU consisting of multiple brigades and they may do so for a cost of one CP. Brigade leaders may not attach army or corps assets to their MU.

6.2 Cavalry Brigade Leaders Some French infantry corps also have cavalry brigades attached. The cavalry brigade leaders are In Command if they are within 6 hexes of their Corps leader and may be part of a Corps sized MU provided the corps leader is Activated. Light cavalry may roll for initiative to form their own CP.

6.3 French 6.3.1 Command Points: The French receive one Command Point for Napoléon, Bernadotte, Davout, Soult, Lannes, Murat, Bessières for a total of 7 Command Points. 6.3.2 The two French Defence Zones generate a CP which must be spent on themselves, use a spare MU marker if they are active and place it the draw cup. 6.3.2.1 The zones are Telnitz (Village and two hexes around on all sides), and Sokolnitz (Village, Castle & Pheasantry). 6.3.2.2 Units in defence zones may move freely within the Defence Zones, if the zone has separated areas they may move between the areas. 6.3.2.3 If they retreat from the area (after Mêlée for example) they may attack to reenter the zone. 6.3.2.4 They may reenter the zone when the Regroup Chit is drawn. 6.3.2.5 If the zone is completely overrun by the Allies, or all defenders voluntarily leave, then the Defence Zone is dissolved. 6.3.3 MU Size: The largest MU which the French may create is a Corps d’armée. 6.3.4 Napoleon’s Headquarters Escorts may only move during the Leader Chit when he is allowed to move. If the owning player chooses, his Escorts may be treated as Army Assets. 6.3.4.1 Napoleon is not allowed to assume the Movement Potential of units with which he is stacked as in the series rules under section 19. 6.3.5 Leader Casualties: The following leaders may not be replaced: Bernadotte, Davout, Soult, Lannes, Murat, Bessières. 6.3.6 Organization: Napoléon reserved the command of his Garde for himself. The Garde may only be commiteed when at least one French Corps and one Allied Corps are on Level 1. As such la Garde is made up of three separate elements:

• Vielle Garde • Cavalerie de la Garde • Artillerie de la Garde

6.3.7 The Artillerie de la Garde may be attached to other MUs as army assets or may form part of Grand Battery MU as outlined below. The Vielle Garde, and Cavalerie de la Garde, are treated as separate command formations. They cannot form as a single MU, but instead must form separate MUs. 6.3.7.1 Bessières may lead either the Vielle Garde or Cavalerie de la Garde, any Imperial Staff ADC may lead the other element. 6.3.8 Leaders of Special Ability: Artillery: Napoléon, Songis Cavalry: Murat, Bessières

NOTE : Maréchal de l'Empire: Bernadotte, Berthier, Bessières, Davout, Lannes, Murat, Soult provide a modifier to artillery limbering only.

6.3.9 Light Cavalry Leaders: The following light cavalry leaders may roll for initiative to form their own CP.

6.4 Austro Russian The Austro Russian command structure reflects the problems and benefits of merging three armies, as well as too many royal leaders: A Czar, an Emperor and at least 5 Royal Princes.

NOTE: Do not confuse Prince Moritz Lichenstein (Advanced Guard cavalry) with Prince Johann Lichenstein commander of the 5th column.

6.4.1 Command Points: The Austro Russians receive One Command Point each for Kollwrat, (Johann) Lichenstein, Bagration and Constatine for a total of 4 Command Points. Additional Command Points may be received due to Random Events Table results. In the Random Events Table these are referred to as Wing or Army Leader Level Command Points. 6.4.2 MU Size: The largest MU the Russians may form is a Division/Column. 6.4.3 Kutuzov: Even though Kutuzov was the appointed supreme commander of the combined Austro Russian armies, Czar Alexander and Emperor Francis also issued orders, and Buxhowden had until recently commanded a separate army and continued to exercise his independence. 6.4.4 Bagration: Bagrationas a Prince may create his Division MU with his own CP without being within Command Span of Czar Alexander. This Division may include any of his brigades that are within his Command Span (three infantry brigades, two cavalry brigades, plus attached Cossacks) 6.4.5 Kienmayer’s Advanced Guard Division MU may include all his brigades that are within his Command Span. 6.4.6 Czar Alexander, Emperor Francis & Kutuzov are not allowed to assume the Movement Potential of units with which he is stacked as in the series rules under section 19. 6.4.7 Leader Casualties: The following leaders may not be replaced: Czar Alexander, Emperor Francis, Kutuzov, Buxhowden, Kollwrat, (Johann) Lichenstein, Bagration and Constatine. 6.4.8 Left Wing Random Events: Buxhowden is always In Command, but random events apply only to the La Bataille d’Austerlitz scenario. At the beginning of the Command Phase the Allied player a die and consults the following table.

LEFT WING RANDOM EVENTS TABLE Buxhowden’s CP’s may only be spent on the Left Wing (Kienmayer’s AG and the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Columns). 1

Buxhowden takes a drink. Zero extra Command Points received.

2-5

One extra Command Points received.

6

Two extra Command Points are received.

Add 3 to the die roll after 2pm.

ARMY STAFF RANDOM EVENTS TABLE CP’s may be spent on any formation, unless Austrian (Kienmayer and Lichenstein) or Russian (all other) formations are specified. 1

The commanders argue. Zero extra Command Points received at army level.

Czar Alexander has a good idea.

2

3

Emperor Francis has a better idea. One extra Austrian Command Point received at army level, which must be spent to form an MU using an Austrian leader.

4-5

Kutuzov assumes commad. Two extra Command Points received at army level.

6

They all agree One Austrian, one Russian and one other Command Point received at army level (total 3). One CP must be spent on an Austrian leader and one CP must be spent on a Russian leader. The third CP may be spent on any leader.

6.4.9 Leaders of Special Ability: Artillery: None Cavalry: Prince Johann Lichenstein 6.4.10 Light Cavalry Leaders: The following light cavalry leaders may roll for initiative to form their own CP. Stutterheim (AG), M.Liechtenstein (AG), Wittgenstein (AG), Tschaplitz (AG)

7.0 SPECIAL RULES

7.1 Grand Batteries Artillery Leaders of Special Ability may, at the usual cost of one CP, form an MU consisting of all artillery batteries and their AAW’s, if used, regardless of higher unit affiliation, within a span of three hexes. That is the artillery leader has a Command Span of three hexes. A Grand Battery MU functions just as any other MU. That is they may move, limber and unlimber when their chit is pulled. The Grand Battery need not retain its organization from turn to turn. Batteries may be attached and detached at the moment of MU creation. Players should keep track of which units form part of this MU when the MU is created.

NOTE: AAW’s are only used with the Règlements de

l’An XXX.

7.2 The Old Guard For purposes of all rules involving the Old Guard, the following 4 battalions are considered to be part of the Old Guard.

• Régiment de grenadiers à pied de la Garde (2 btn.) • Régiment de chasseurs à pied de la Garde (2 btn.)

7.3 Imperial Guard Marching Band If a French combat unit attempts to recover good morale within 4 hexes of the Imperial Guard Marching Band, add 12 to the die roll.

7.4 Oudinot’s Elite Battalions All of the combat formations in the First Division of the V Corps are Oudinot’s Elite Battalions.

• These combat formations may skirmish. • They are separate from the rest of the V Corps for morale. • They are not part of the V Corps for command.

7.5 Cossacks Cossack units have the following restrictions placed on them.

• To attempt a Charge, Cossacks must first pass a Morale Check. If they fail the Morale Check a Charge marker may not be placed on the Cossack unit and its movement for the

Page 6: Austerlitz Rev2 Letter

La Bataille d’Austerlitz 6

✸✸✸✸✸

turn is complete. They may make this Morale Check any time they have an LOS to a potential target, even if they have not yet declared a Charge.

• Cossacks may only Charge unlimbered artillery from the flank or rear.

• Cossacks never become Exhausted when they Retreat Before Charge.

• Cossacks which are not Exhausted may Retreat Before Charge from enemy heavy or light cavalry. If charged solely by Cuirassiers or Carabiniers, Cossacks may Retreat Before Charge even if Disorderd and/or Exhausted.

• Cuirassiers and Carabiniers are not doubled when involved in a Mêlée with Cossacks.

EXCEPTION: The Life Guard Cossacks do not need to Check Morale before initiating a Charge nor are they prohibited from charging unlimbered artillery from the front. They do receive the benefits of being Cossacks for Retreat Before Charge.

7.6 Napoléon, Czar Alexander and Emperor Francis 7.6.1 If an enemy unit enters the same hex as Napoléon, Czar Alexander or Emperor Francis the respective leader is immediately captured. 7.6.2 If Napoléon is captured the Austro Russians are immediately granted a Decisive Victory. 7.6.3 If Czar Alexander is captured, wounded or killed all Russian combat formations with 15 hexes must make a Morale Check, with a -12 modifier. The Russian units within 16-30 hexes of the location must make a Morale Check, with a -6 modifer. All other Russian formations must make a Morale Check. This happens every turn until the Archduke Constatine arrives in the hex of the fallen Czar and takes command. 7.6.4 If Emperor Francis is killed or wounded his brother Johanne Liechenstein assumes command.

7.7 Headquarters Escorts Units assigned to headquarters escort duty are considered army assets and may be attached to any MU per the usual rules. Or they may move, Assault or Charge during the leader chit as per the usual Leader Chit rule.

7.8 Scenario Reinforcements When reinforcements are directed to be deployed during the Reinforcement Chit the arriving reinforcements may not be placed in an enemy Zone of Influence. If the reinforcements are unable to comply with this rule displace them towards the friendly depot until the can be placed on the map and outside of enemy Zones of Influence.

7.9 Cavalry Skirmish Order Even though there is a row for cavalry skirmishers on the Fire Defense Chart and a column on the Movment Chart, this applies only to players using the Règlements de l’An XXX.
