Autumn Events 2019 Dear members, The Board and I wish you all the very best for 2019 and trust that your Christmas was wonderful. The Club experienced slightly less December activity than expected, but, interestingly the marked variations in Club attendance have levelled out a little. The Club started the New Year with a wonderful, interactive evening of the Pirates of Penzance. Some remarkable pirate outfits were in dubious taste when compared with the policemen and MAJGEN Stanley’s daughters. Mr Stuart Maunder AM, the Artistic Director of the SA State Opera sang the role of MAJGEN Stanley and lead the singing of the various male choruses. I played the role of the Pirate King and to everyone’s relief did not sing but spoke the relevant lines. Notwithstanding this most joined in enthusiastically! The first military history evening, on Adelaide’s hottest day, commemorated the battle of Isandlwana 140 years ago and was the most fascinating presentation. The Quiz Night, the following week, once again, has proved very popular and for the second year running I was a passenger on the winning table. The Events Committee have worked very hard to bring you all a great program this year. The Club finances for the first six months of the 2018-2019 financial year have us in positive balance; unfortunately this is a little behind budget. Over the Christmas period the bar has been refurbished and the information technology systems substantially improved. Superintendent Bruce James-Martin has kept the garden alive with loving attention and lots of water over the hottest of Januaries. The Club Head Chef, Michal Cabaj, has resigned and will be missed. He made a considerable impact during his three an half years at the Club for which the Board are greatly appreciative. A new Head Chef has been appointed. Sadly the Club has had to say goodbye to a number of now former members who had not paid their subscriptions. The Board is keen that there is something special about being a member and those who do not take their commitment to their fellow members seriously are best out of the Club. Consistent with this is the Club By Law limiting the number of times a previous member may visit the Club as a guest to 4 times in any one year. The limit for any guest, irrespective of who introduces them, is once a month (12 times a year). It is intended that this be policed more consistently in the future. ‘Military Policing and Law Enforcement in Lawless Lands’

Guest speaker: MAJ Aaron Tucker Our society takes the Rule of Law for granted. Sadly the span of the globe where that is the case is c on t r a c t i ng , r a the r t h an expanding. Confl ict often provides additional ‘cover’ for criminal activities. Major Aaron Tucker, a Club Member, is a serving officer with Border Force and the Royal Australian Corps of Military Police (RACMP). Aaron is a third generation Military Policeman, and a graduate of ADFA and RMC-Duntroon. In the course of the past 15 years, he has served in a number of third world countries experiencing varying degrees of instability; in South East Asia, the Middle East and the South West Pacific. Drawing on his experiences he will compare and contrast the challenges, trials and tribulations of enforcing the law where its traction is often tenuous; from humanitarian interventions and border protection tasks through to combat operations. Aaron will provide a brief history of the RACMP, and overview of recent military policing operations, including a perspective on less-lethal technology and its application. He will also discuss deployment on a range of operations, from border protection to peace monitoring and active interdiction campaigns targeting narcotics.

THEATRE NIGHT Thursday, 2 May 2019

Theatre Night this year will begin with the production of ‘HMS Pinafore’. First staged in London in May 1878 Gilbert and Sullivan began work on HMS Pinafore in early 1878 on the heels of a moderately successful operetta called The Sorcerer. Pinafore would be their fourth professional collaboration after being brought together by the impresario Richard D’Oyly Carte and would

go on to be their first international

success.

The HMS Pinafore story takes

place aboard the ship HMS

Pinafore. The captain’s daughter,

Josephine, is in love with a

lower - c l a s s s a i lo r , Ra lph

Rackstraw, although her father

intends her to marry Sir Joseph

Porter, the First Lord of the

Admiralty. She abides by her

father’s wishes at first, but Sir

Joseph’s advocacy of the equality

of humankind encourages Ralph

and Josephine to overturn

conventional social order.

Pinafore is among the most

popular Gilbert and Sullivan

operas, perhaps because of its

infectious tunes and generally well

-constructed libretto. Drawing on

several of his earlier “bab ballad”

poems, Gilbert embued HMS

Pinafore with mirth and silliness to

spare. The opera’s gentle satire

reprises and builds upon the

theme of love between different

social classes.

Guests will be expected to arrive

at the Club at 1745 to have dinner

before heading to the theatre at

1900. The Arts Theatre is located

on Angas St, a 15-minute walk

from the Club. Members may

organise their own transport with

other guests if required. After the

theatre finishes guests are

invited back to the Club for tea,

coffee and chocolates.

CORAL SEA DINNER Saturday, 4 May 2019

From 4 – 8 May 1942, the United States and Australian Navies fought together in the Battle of the Coral Sea, which was the first naval battle in history in which the opposing surface ships at no stage sighted or fired on each other - all attacks being carried out by aircraft. The main Australian involvement in the battle was the allied cruiser force, commanded by Rear-Admiral Jack Crace (the Australian born Royal Navy flag officer commanding the Australian Squadron) comprising HMAS Australia, HMAS Hobart, USS Chicago and three destroyers. This task group was detached from the main carrier group by Admiral Fletcher to intercept and destroy the Port Moresby Invasion fleet which had sailed from Rabaul the principal town in New Britain. Japanese torpedo and high level bombers attacked the cruiser force and although there were no direct hits, the subsequent strafing attacks resulted in many casualties. In the case of the US forces, it was the fighters, dive bombers and torpedo aircraft from the USS Lexington and USS Yorktown which sank one

Imperial Japanese aircraft carrier,

severely damaged two large fleet

aircraft carriers and caused the

heavy loss of their experienced

aircrews. This prevented these

carriers from participating in the

Battle of Midway the following

month. During the Battle of the

Coral Sea, the Japanese severely

damaged USS Yorktown and USS

Lexington. The latter was bombed

and torpedoed, resulting in

aviation gas fires and explosions

and subsequently had to be

abandoned and sunk.

Interestingly, it was Australian

Coast Watchers stationed on

Bougainville Island who were first

to sight a large number of enemy

ships heading southward. The

Coast Watchers alerted authorities

in Port Moresby and good job

they did because the enemy ships

turned out to be the Japanese

Task Group headed to invade

Port Moresby.

The Battle of the Coral Sea

thwarted the planned Japanese

invasion of Port Moresby and

ended the Japanese expansion

further southward. The Official

History of the Royal Australian

Navy refers to the Battle of the

Coral Sea as “Japan's first check."

For many people this was ‘the

battle that saved Australia’. Join as

TOBRUK DINNER Saturday, 25 May 2019

Between April and October 1941 approximately 14,000 Australian soldiers were besieged in Tobruk by the German and Italian armies commanded by General Erwin Rommel. For these eight months the soldiers were subjected to constant bombing and shelling by the enemy. The Australian garrison was commanded by Lieutenant General Leslie Morshead and consisted of the 9th Division including the 20th, 24th, and 26th Brigades, the 18th Brigade of the 7th division, four British artillery regiments and some Indian troops. It was essential that the Allies held this town with its harbour for the defence of Egypt and the Suez Canal and forcing the enemy to bring its supplies from Tripoli across 1500kms of desert. To avoid the very busy time at the beginning of the calendar year, the club will recognise the service of the Australian Army now in May, with a formal dinner to be called the Tobruk Dinner. The Tobruk and El Alamein campaigns of WW2 are well-known campaigns in Australia’s military history, by most members of South Australian society. The guest speaker for this

Fox Creek, McLaren Vale SA

Fox Creek has a passionate winemaking history based on a standard of excellence strived for in every drop. It’s a life-long passion that dates back to 1984 when Helen and Dr Jim Watts purchased a 32 hectare McLaren Vale property for a delicious diversion—becoming winemakers. Ironically, they were advised against growing vines in the black clay soils that had previously been used for planting barley. Undeterred by the sceptics, their enthusiasm and careful nurturing of the young vines paid off. The vineyard bore exceptionally good quality fruit, which in turn, resulted in exceptionally good wine. Don’t miss out on this fantastic opportunity to sample a selection of wines from this celebrated and award-winning winery.
