In the US, one in six men willbe diagnosed with prostate can-cer in their lifetime making itthe most frequently diagnosedcancer in men after skin cancer.

In 2013, over 238,000 newcases of the disease will bediagnosed and almost 30,000men will die of prostate cancerin the U.S. alone.

Despite these figures, the level ofawareness, understanding and supportfor prostate cancer lags significantlybehind that of women’s health causes.

A man is 35 percent more likely to bediagnosed with prostate cancer than awoman is to be diagnosed with breastcancer.

One new case of prostate cancer

occurs every 2.2 minutes and aman dies from the diseaseevery 17.5 minutes.

The incidence rates are

double for African American

men.

If detected and treated early, prostate cancer has a 97 per-cent success rate.

Every man 45 years old andover should get a PSA Test so that hecan have a “baseline” to compare withfuture tests.

Prostate cancer is not just a man’s dis-ease, it can have a devastating impact onwives, partners and entire families.

We all need to get informed, getinvolved, and bring an end to this dis-ease.

The final countdown has begun. Onlya few more shopping days left to find theperfect gift. Of course, as they say, “It’s thethought that counts.” While this is verytrue, it is also true that it is the gift behindthe gift that counts, as well.

While you are shopping, focus onsomething that will tell the other personthat you are interested in them and that youare paying attention to them; who they areand what they are. Celebrate their unique-ness. Support their dreams. Then focus onwhat you wish for each person and whatyou want them to have in their life.

If you can, try to avoid a random gift. However, a random gift is better than nogift at all. Remember, Gifts often define arelationship. “Little gifts maintain friend-ship and great gifts maintain love.”

The gift you receive from someone

often gives you more than the item itself.A beautiful evening bag may contain yourfriend’s wish that you have a wonderfulparty to attend so you can use it or a won-derful person to go out with. A new golfclub may contain the wish that the personwill improve their game and lower theirscore. Your loved one or friend is wishingsomething wonderful for you with theirchoice of gift.

Unfortunately, not everyone will seethe wish or gift behind the gift. In thosecases, it might be a good idea to include abrief note to explain your choice. Even ifsomeone dislikes your gift, they will notdislike the thought behind it. The giftbehind the gift is a gift in itself.

If you do dislike your gift, do notshow it and do not say it. Never hurt thegiver’s feelings or belittle their choice. Besensitive and kind. Keep an open mind andan open heart and show appreciation to thegiver and their intentions and efforts. EvenSanta doesn’t always get it right.

FPL shares eight tips to loweryour bill this holiday seasonFestive lights, full ovens and house guests

are staples of the holiday season – but allthat fun can be not so jolly on the bank ac-count. FPL is helping customers save energyand money this holiday season with EightTips to Save this Holiday Season.1. LED lights are the bright choice to get

more for your money. The amount of powerit takes to operate one 7-watt incandescentbulb could power two 24-foot LED strings -enough for a six foot tree, they also lastabout 10 times longer.

2. Set timers for your holiday displays toturn off before bedtime so there is no needto burn the lights all night long.

3. Switch out guest room and commonarea lighting to compact fluorescent light(CFL) bulbs for overnight guests. Each CFLbulb you install will save about $50 in en-ergy costs over its lifetime.

4. Remind guests to turn off lights andfans when they leave the room. Turning offone ceiling fan and one light when you leavethe room can save more than $7 a month onyour electric bill.

5. Ovens lose a lot of heat when openedand require significant energy to heat backup to the appropriate temperature. Instead, when you have to sneak-a-peek, turn the

oven light on and look through the interiorwindow.

6. Choose glass or ceramic pans for theoven – they heat faster than metal ones andallow you to set the temperature 25 degreeslower than a recipe suggests for the samecooking time.

7. Use smaller appliances such as crock-pots, microwaves and toaster ovens whenpossible. They are more energy-efficient forside dishes or small meals.

8. When it comes to gifts, opt for a laptopover a desktop computer. Laptops require 50to 80 percent less power than a desktopcomputer.

For more ways to save energy year-round, take an Online Home Energy Surveyat www.FPL.com/OHES.

Fighting Fall FatigueAlthough it has been more

than a month since daylightsaving time ended, problemswith sleep disturbance andfatigue may linger for manypeople.“The reduced amount of

sunlight exposure and shift-ing time back by an hourcauses changes in the body’ssecretion of melatonin, a hor-mone that regulates sleepand wake patterns,” said Dr.Joshua Gizersky of MountSinai Medical Center. “Thiscan affect your sleep and cause subtle shiftsin hormones that may contribute to fatigue. You may find that it’s difficult to fall asleep, you’re falling asleep early in the evening orthat you can’t get through activities in theevening due to fatigue.”Mount Sinai offers traditional and integra-

tive approaches to evaluate patients experi-encing sleep disorders or extended bouts offatigue. “Many people try over-the-counterproducts, but often find they do not work orhave unwanted side effects,” Dr. Gizerskysaid. “They should be used only under su-pervision of a physician who is experiencedin managing integrative and natural ap-proaches.”Board certified in internal medicine, Dr.

Gizersky is also trained inanti-aging, regenerative andfunctional medicine, whichcombines the use of bioiden-tical hormones with supple-ments to restore wellnessand promote longevity andhealthy metabolic function. He noted that doctorstrained in utilizing supple-ments can direct patients tosafe and effective non-pre-scription options.

“Taken in small doses, amelatonin supplement may

be helpful,” he said. “It should be takenabout two hours before your intended bed-time. Melatonin is not a sleeping pill – itfunctions as a signal that triggers a series ofevents that inform your body it is time forsleep.”The recommended dosage is no more than

FIU professor works to protectSouth Florida’s coral reefs

On any given day, Deron Burkepile, as-sistant professor of marine science at FloridaInternational University’s Biscayne BayCampus can be found conducting researchon how humans impact marine and terres-trial ecosystems, and what actions can becarried out to mitigate resulting damage. His latest work focuses on common South

Florida pollutants from sewage, agriculturalpractices and other sources that can lead toa rapid increase in coral disease, as well asbleaching among nearby coral reefs. Thethree-year study examined the effects of in-creased exposure to nitrogen and phospho-rous in a controlled testing site. It was oneof the largest and longest experiments con-ducted to evaluate nutrient loading on coralreefs. The study, published in “GlobalChange Biology,” determined these com-mon pollutants doubled the prevalence ofdisease and more than tripled the amount ofcoral bleaching, according to Burkepile.“The results of the study actually offer

hope that local decisions to mitigate nutrientpollution can help corals survive the increas-ing stress of rising sea surface temperatures

as a result of climate change,” Burkepilesaid. “While slowing climate change willtake coordinated, international action overdecades, reducing nutrient pollution on coralreefs can have immediate effects on reefhealth and conservation.”

For years researchers have observed thedecline in coral reef health where sewageoutflows or use of fertilizers, in urban oragricultural areas have caused an increase inthe loading of nutrients such as nitrogen andphosphorus. But until now, almost no largelong-term experiments have been conductedto pin down the impact of nutrient overload-ing to separate them from other possiblecauses of coral reef decline. According tothe findings, once the addition of pollutantsstopped, the corals recovered within months.A leading marine ecologist, Burkepile has

completed two missions at FIU’s AquariusReef Base (http://aquarius.fiu.edu/), theworld’s only undersea research lab locatedoff the coast of Key Largo. For more information on Burkepile and

Miami Dolphins visitAventura Waterways K-8 CenterThe Miami Dolphins capped off their

weekly school visits by staying close tohome, making an appearance at AventuraWaterways K-8 Center for a Gatorade Jun-ior Training Camp (JTC), with nearly 400students participating in the event. The JTC,which the Dolphins provide to two schoolsper week, consisted of six interactive foot-ball drills, cheerleader routines and the“Dol-Fit” message.“It’s a great opportunity for the kids to get

outside and learn something that they don’tget to do in the classroom and have a great ex-perience,” AventuraWaterways Physical Ed-ucation teacher Jennifer O’Connor said. “Thekids listen to what’s coming from the Dol-phins and it allows your message to sink in.”The camp began with Miami Dolphins

Youth Programs Coordinator Troy Draytonspeaking to the students about the impor-tance of education, staying physically fit andmaking positive choices, all components ofthe “Dol-Fit” message. Then, the students were treated to six

football stations, which emphasized the fun-damentals of football while receiving someinteractive instruction from Drayton, a for-mer NFL tight end, and the rest of the Dol-phins Youth Programs staff.“I think the students of Aventura Water-

ways did a great job today,” Drayton said.“They listened to what we had to say andwere very eager to participate in the drills; Ienjoyed our visit.”Aventura Waterways K-8 Center, which

serves approximately 1,900 students, strivesto provide students with the very best edu-cation coupled with broad and diverse expe-riences.The Miami Dolphins Youth Programs’

mission is to emphasize the importance of

education, physical fitness, and positivechoices for kids in a safe and fun environ-mentFor more information on the Miami

Game Changing TIVO Service GoesLive in Miami with Atlantic Broadband

BY LEE STEPHENS

Atlantic Broadband is one of the cableproviders available to Aventura residentsand they have big news.David Isenberg, Chief Marketing & Strat-

egy Officer for Atlantic Broadband was intown last week to announce that AtlanticBroadband has joined forces with the newTiVo, and will be offering its customers theultimate TV experience with the new T6platform. And by joined forces they meanthe TiVo T6 platform is built into AtlanticBroadband’s new suite of double and tripleplay bundles. So now along with blazinglyfast Internet speeds and unlimited local andlong distance calling anywhere in U.S., At-lantic Broadband customers will receive allthe bells and whistles of TiVo’s newest plat-form without purchasing a $600 receiver.Bundle prices start as low as $99.99 per

month. Existing Atlantic Broadband DVRcustomers can easily upgrade to the newTiVo service for only $10 more per month. Our analysis showed the service to be pricedwell under the typical AT&T U-Verse pack-age. It might be the time to do some com-parison shopping of your own. With the TiVo platform, users can record

up to six shows at once (so long familysquabble), find recently deleted shows (an-

other argument starter), and deliver full DVRservice (such as pause and rewind) on everyTV in the home. Plus the service allowsviewers to stream favorite shows on any mo-bile device in home, and the ability to down-load and take entertainment with them whenthey travel. The unique “What To WatchNow” feature provides shortcuts to popularshows on right now so you’ll avoid the ag-gravation of endlessly scrolling through “theguide.” Another improvement is that you donot need to point the remote at the box inorder for it to work. In fact you can hide thebox if you want. But don’t because when youlose your remote a button on the box will cre-ate a beep in the remote and help you find it.Atlantic Broadband, is the nation's

13th largest cable operator, serving Bal Har-bor, Bay Harbor Islands, Golden Beach,Miami Beach, North Bay Village, SouthMiami, Sunny Isles Beach and Surfside andpartially served areas such as Aventura andPinecrest.“The new TiVo service from Atlantic

Broadband is changing the face of cable, andwe’re excited to be the first to launch in theMiami area, providing new and existing cus-tomers with the ultimate television experi-ence,” said David Isenberg, AtlanticBroadband's Chief Marketing and StrategyOfficer.

After spending a week behind the wheelof the Kia Sorento, I now understand whythe people who own them have been ravingabout them. They are just that special.

For 2014, Sorento adds a top-of-the-linetrim level to its lineup — the SX Limited— and the popular U.S.-built crossovervehicle has been given an all-new platform, sophisticated new styling cues and signifi-cant improvement to ride, handling andcomfort. In fact, over 80 percent of theparts are either all-new or significantlyredesigned, including a new 3.3-liter GDIV-6 engine.

The all-aluminum V-6 powerplant pro-duces 290 hp at 6,400 rpm and 252 pounds-feet of torque at 5,200 rpm. It’s availableoptionally on the LX and EX and as stan-dard equipment in the SX and SX Limited.Power is routed to either the front wheelsor, optionally, to all four wheels using anenhanced Torque On Demand all-wheel

drive system that seamlessly directs powerto the tire with the most traction. Also newis Torque Vectoring Cornering Control(TVCC) that aids stability under certaindriving conditions,

The 2.4-liter GDI four-cylinder enginealso is back for 2014 as standard equipmentin the LX and EX and replaces the previ-ously standard 2.4-liter MPI 4-cylinder.With 191 hp at 6,300 rpm and 181 pounds-feet of torque at a low 4,250 rpm, the light-weight all-aluminum powerplant is effi-cient enough for day-to-day drivingdemands.

Sorento comes standard with a smoothshifting six-speed automatic transmission. Also standard, electric power steeringreplaces the hydraulic unit from the 2013model, which improves steering feel andreduces weight. The new availableFlexSteer offers drivers a choice of threesteering modes: Comfort, Normal and Sport.

The 2014 Sorento rides on an all-newchassis that increases torsional rigidity by18 percent for improved ride and handling. To the rear, a reinforced multi-link setuputilizes new bushings and mounts to betterisolate road noise vibration, while the com-pact design allows for more interior space.

Redesigned front and rear fascias

enhance the Sorento’s road presence with alower, broader look from the front and awider stance at the rear. The new Sorentorides on redesigned 17-, 18- and — a firstfor the Kia CUV — larger 19-inch wheels.

On the inside, the new Sorento has aredesigned instrument panel that combinestechnology with ergonomics. On EX trimsand above, the large center gauge clusterfeatures a seven-inch TFT LCD that proj-ects a digital speedometer flanked by easy-to-read analog instruments for the

tachometer, fuel level and engine temp. TheTFT LCD readout also displays trip andvehicle information, along with navigationupdates (optional).

The MSRP on the 2014 Kia Sorentoranges from $24,100 to $40,100.
