When something senseless and horrifichappens, people seek answers and under-standing. They wonder, “How could thishappen?” and “Why did this happen?”

Everyone struggles to make sense ofthe vile and heinous crime that has beencommitted. The evil involved is difficult todigest and impossible to accept.

One possible explanation is alienation. The English word incorporates the Spanishalienado and the French aliene which meansinsane. The evildoers become and feel sep-arated, disconnected and estranged fromothers. They do not experience themselvesas a part of their own universe, or as a partof the world. They feel like an alien andthey are unable to assimilate to the world.

They become detached from them-selves and out of touch. They no longer feelthat they are connected to others or that theyare part of the human race. They turn awayand detach themselves from their family, friends and society.

Sensing a rejection by others they put themat a distance. They isolate themselves andseparate themselves mentally and emotion-ally. In reality, they are the ones who feellost and rejected. They become hostile andhateful. They are unprincipled and do nothave a moral compass. They feel that theycan break the moral law by a conscious actof deadly, malevolent treachery.

Once the crime and catastrophe hasoccurred, there can be a sense of uncon-scious guilt that you are not aware of, asense that you failed them in some way. Nomatter how you might have cared for themor befriended them you could not have pre-vented them from committing their atro-cious, depraved act of destruction.

Their abominable act can also generatefeelings of anger and resentment. It isfrightening to confront the degree of evil intheir nature. It is difficult to fathom thedepths of their depravity. You probably feelvery vulnerable and unprotected. You willneed to strengthen and enhance your ownphilosophy and create a way to cope withthe unacceptable and repugnant aspects oflife.

In view of the charges that I am a hyp-ocrite over my relationship with my slaveSally Hemings and the 1998 DNA connect-ing results, I decided to tell my side of thestory. Sally and my beloved wife Marthawere half-sisters. Sally’s mother Betty wasa slave concubine to Martha’s father, JohnWales. On the death Wales, Martha and Iinherited her father’s slaves, includingyoung Sally. Sally was present whenMartha became gravely ill on birth of ourlast child, when I made a death-bed prom-ise to Martha that I would never remarry.Martha did not want the same terrible expe-rience for our daughters that she had withher step-mother. With Martha’s passing, Ibecame Minister to France and took Patsy, our oldest daughter, with me. In 1787, onnews of the awful death of my daughterLucy, I requested my cousins, the Eppes, to

send a responsible female servant to crossthe ocean with younger daughter Polly tobe with us. They selected 14 year old Sally.I sent both daughters to boarding school, while Sally became a part of my household, together with her brother James, whotrained as a chef.

In Paris, I became emotionallyinvolved with a married woman MariaCosway. I was truly depressed over ourseparation. Meanwhile, Sally matured intoa strikingly attractive, bright young ladywho resembled Martha. I believe Sally wasaware of the French Law which gave slavesthe right to freedom. I made a promise toSally that if she would return to Virginiawith us, I would free any children Sally hadwith me, as soon as they achieved adult-hood. Over the many years, we had sixchildren; four survived to adulthood andwere freed. We named our first sonMadison, a tribute to James, my dearfriend. On my death, I freed only Sally’sfew relatives, and no other slaves. To avoidthe auction, I arranged for Sally to be givento our daughter Patsy, who then gave Sallyher freedom. I take pride that I lived up toevery promise that I made to Martha andSally.

An echocardiogram is a commonly usedtest that uses sound waves to create a mov-ing picture of the heart. It allows doctors tosee how your heart is beating and pumpingblood; and, it can help identify abnormalitiesin the heart muscle and valves. An echocardiogram can determine your

heart's pumping strength. Specific measure-ments may include the percentage of bloodthat's pumped out or the volume of bloodpumped by the heart in one minute. If yourheart isn't pumping enough blood to meetyour body's needs, heart failure may be aconcern. It can also show how your heartvalves move as your heart beats. Your doc-tor can determine if the valves open wideenough for adequate blood flow or closefully to prevent blood leakage. Abnormalblood flow patterns and certain conditions, such as aortic valve stenosis, can be detectedas well.If you have had a prior heart attack, an

echocardiogram can determine any damagethat may have been caused to the heart mus-cle. Your doctor can determine whether allparts of the heart wall are contributing nor-mally to your heart's pumping activity. De-

fects of the heart such as problems with theheart chambers, abnormal connections be-tween the heart and major blood vessels, andcomplex heart defects that are present atbirth, can also be detected. Finally, anechocardiogram can determine your heart’ssize. Weakened or damaged heart valves, high blood pressure or other diseases cancause the chambers of your heart to enlarge.Your doctor can use an echocardiogram toevaluate the need for treatment or monitortreatment effectiveness. At Mount Sinai, we have the latest in 3-D

echocardiography technology which allowsour doctors to more accurately assess a pa-tient’s risk of heart disease by revealingheart valve function, blood flow and coro-nary artery disease. Our state-of-the-artechocardiography lab is accredited by theIntersocietal Commission for the Accredita-tion of Echocardiography Laboratories(ICAEL). Mount Sinai’s echocardiographylab is one of the few laboratories in the theUnited States, Canada and Puerto Rico rec-ognized for its commitment to high qualitypatient care and its provision of quality di-agnostic testing for heart disease.Dr. Juan-Carlos Brenes is the Co-Direc-

tor of the Mount Sinai EchocardiographyLaboratory. He sees patients at both MountSinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, aswell as in Mount Sinai Aventura’s multi-spe-cialty physician office. Adam Goldstein, President & CEO ofRoyal Caribbean International, is a prettygood table tennis player...in fact, quite good.So it was a natural for him to accept the

on, Caroline and Danny handily won bothtournaments, and Goldstein and Ceseranograciously congratulated the winners, sayingthat they had no idea these youngsters wereso incredibly talented."This event gave hundreds of people the

FPL encourages customers to plantthe right tree in the right space

Trees growing near power lines are one ofthe leading causes of power flickers and out-ages. Florida Power & Light Company(FPL) reminds its customers to follow itstree-planting tips. "Line clearing is an im-portant part of our plan to keep the lights onand our customers’ safe," said Eli Via-montes, FPL's manager of vegetation man-agement. "By making the right landscapingchoices, our customers can help maintainsafe, reliable electric service for their fami-lies and neighbors."

Find the Right Tree – Trees comein many shapes and sizes, and canchange dramatically as they grow. Beforeselecting a tree, learn how tall, wide anddeep the tree will be at maturity. Visitwww.FPL.com/RightTree for planting tipsand a list of recommended trees by region.Choose the Right Place – Trees and power

lines don’t mix. Trees that grow too close topower lines could interrupt local electricservice and cause a safety hazard. FPL en-courages its customers to plant trees andbushes away from power lines to help main-tain reliable electric service.Call Before You Dig – Some utility lines

are buried underground. So, before reachingfor a shovel, reach for the phone. SunshineState One Call of Florida will have under-ground lines and equipment marked for free.

Just call 811 at least two full business daysbefore digging. For more information, visitwww.Sunshine811.com.Don't Prune Near Power – FPL cautions

its customers to never prune trees growingnear power lines; hire trained professionalsto clear vegetation away from the lines. Staysafe and stay far away from power lines atall times."FPL delivers better than 99.98 percent

reliability and we’re working constantly tomake it even better," Viamontes added."That’s why we clear trees and vegetationfrom approximately 15,000 miles of powerlines every year – a distance equal to travel-ing round trip from Miami to Los Angelesnearly three times."The National Arbor Day Foundation has

designated FPL as a “Tree Line USA” com-pany for 10 consecutive years in recognitionof the company’s support for preserving, protecting and enhancing the environment. For more information, visit FPL.com.

LED positioning lightscreate distinct eyebrows, making the Forteinstantly recognizable.

Gentle sculpting along the lower flankstaper the sheet metal inward, giving the car ataut, nimble appearance. To the rear, the up-

On the inside, the driver-focused cabin iscanted 10 degrees and features high-qualitymaterials and soft touch points. Large, easy-to-read instruments dominate and secondarycontrols are easy to find, while the optional4.2-inch color LCD screen between thewhite-on-black gauges in the EX providestrip and ancillary vehicle information.Chrome bezels ring the HVAC rotary knobsand the optional push-button start. Additionalchrome accents, standard Bluetooth handsfree phone integration and power windows, mirrors and door locks add to the Forte’s lux-ury feel. Optional leather seating trim, powersunroof and dual-zone automatic climatecontrol with rear seat vents and HID headlights add to the sophistication.

Under the hood, the Forte is powered byeither an efficient 1.8-liter 148 hp engine or amore powerful 2.0-liter 173 hp GDI. Fueleconomy for the 2.0-liter is rated at 24/36 mpg.

The 2014 Forte is offered in two models:LX with a 1.8-liter engine and manual trans-

mission — standard equipment includes steer-ing wheel-mounted audio controls, SiriusXMsatellite radio, Bluetooth, power windows, airconditioning and heated power-folding mir-rors. Add-ons include 16-inch alloy wheels,

Design doesn't just apply to the spaces weinhabit, says Stuart Geller, president ofGeller Design Group. "The choices wemake design our lives," he asserts. "Youdon't have to be a designer to make choicesin your life that bring you joy, and to stayaway from things that don't matter."Geller has designed his own life in accor-

dance with a kind of feng shui of personalsatisfaction. At this point in his career, hesays, "I don't take on many jobs. Wonderfulpeople keep coming into my life, many ofthem repeat customers or their relatives andfriends. This is what makes me feel proudand successful."His criteria? "Basically," Geller explains,

"I like projects that are interesting for clientswho are very positive individuals. It's allabout energy and alignment."There's an important distinction between

attachment and commitment, he says. Forexample, "If someone is redoing a house inorder to show it off to friends, that's attach-ment. It becomes a burden; there's no joy init. When someone is committed to makingsomething beautiful, that positive energyfills their home with joy."We're doing interviews right now for

new projects. Some are renovating, andsome have purchased new construction. "Iam doing what I love, and I love what I do,"

Geller says. "If more people did this, therewould be a lot less stress in the world."Stuart Geller is a licensed interior de-

signer (Florida License #0001705). Formore information, call (305) 937-0111 orvisit www.stuartgeller.com.
