BY BARI AUERBACH oday we are honoring and recognizing men and women out there saving our lives on a daily basis,” began Heather J. Rohan, former CEO at Aventura Hospital and Medical Center as she expressed appreciation to Emergency Medical Services during the hospital-sponsored October Breakfast Meeting for the Aventura Marketing Council. The event honored teams from the City of Hallandale Beach, the City of Hollywood and Miami-Dade County. Bob Hollander of Brown & Brown Insurance, standing in for AMC Chair Cliff Schulman of Weiss, Serota, Helfman, welcomed hundreds of business and community leaders gathered at Turnberry Isle Resort for the event. Special thanks went out to Kojo Maison of Paladar Latin Kitchen & Rum Bar at The Village at Gulfstream Park for generously donating gift certificates to all three fire rescue departments. “While a gentleman on vacation was enjoying Gulfstream Park, he went into cardiac arrest,” Rohan said. “Hallandale Beach Fire Rescue rushed him to Aventura Hospital’s ER where our team helped repair the damage to his heart. We thank Hallandale Beach Fire Rescue for working with Aventura Hospital to provide the very best care and implement leading-edge technology to save lives.” “Another man having chest pains was brought to Aventura Hospital by Hollywood Fire Rescue and survived an acute heart attack because of the team’s quick action in notifying our ER before they arrived. Activating our ER early enabled us to rush the gentleman to our Cath Lab and quickly insert a balloon to open the man’s arteries within minutes, facilitating positive outcomes. Teams like the City of Hollywood help make it possible to provide this type of excellent care consistently by working fast to alert our ER team.” “When Aventura Hospital held a Heart Month event, fire rescue teams from Hallandale Beach, Hollywood and Miami- Dade attended to help educate the community about the symptoms of a heart attack. In the middle of the festivities, Miami-Dade Rescue left to help a man having chest pains. He went into full cardiac arrest and the team brought him to our ER for care. They returned to the Heart Month event and told the story to help reinforce the message to know heart attack symptoms. We thank them for their willingness to teach our community.” During the meeting, coinciding with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Rohan noted early detection – for any disease – can save lives. “Much like heart care, there is progress towards beating breast cancer, but there were still over 2.6 million women diagnosed last year. We still have to fight for life by urging women to get a mammogram. We will help: just call us or schedule online.” For more information, visit their website: aventurahospital.com, phone the Aventura Breast Diagnostic Center: 305-792-5828 or Aventura Hospital and Medical Center: 305-682-7000. Jerry was a good heart surgeon. As aresult he was every mother’s dream for herdaughter.

But there was a problem. As alover he was pretty bad. Troublewas he knew it, which didn’t helphis self esteem. It didn’t matter tohim when doing the act, he wassatisfied but it was ovbvious thatthe other one was completelydisappointed.

He never trusted the women hemade love to because he felt that they werefaking their reactions so that they could getto him and his doctorism in spite of hisineptness in the love making end. After allhe was a “doctor” making lots of money.

He wanted to get married but his selfesteem was way low. He had a way ofchecking as to whether the partner at themoment was faking while she was exclaim-ing how great it had been, he would calm-ly check to see how fast her heart was

going, regular beat and Jerry saw a a fake.He finally met Rita, who aware of his

way of checking the love results, she likedJerry. However she really wanted him inher life and when it finally came to his lovemaking, in the aftermath, which Jerry

checked her breathing, she wasbreathing very fast and happily. This made Jerry finally feel thathe now had a love that really wasjust that.

When asked by one of herfriends how she enjoyed whatothers found disappointing, shelaughed and said, “When I was

little my mother told me that if I dreamedreal hard, things would happen. I fol-lowed my mother’s advice and whenJerry was making love to me, boy did Idream. To say I was breathless is puttingit mildly.”

Jerry the heart man and Sue were mar-ried five years ago. Now two children laterJerry tells the whole world that his mar-riage is what dreams are made of.

Sue smiles and completely agrees.

Have you ever heard the expression,“as slow as molasses” or as “slow asmolasses in January”? Molasses is a thick, sweet, sticky syrup. It is very viscous andit flows very slowly in the cold.

There may be times in your life whenyou feel that things are moving too slowly. Some or all of the things you want may beeluding you. Important things like yourhealth or the health of a loved one, a rela-tionship, a promotion, prosperity, securityand happiness may seem hopelessly elu-sive. It is easy to feel frustrated and dis-couraged because you feel that your needsand desires are not being fulfilled and yourprayers are not being answered.

Human beings need to see change andimprovement to feel encouraged and to beinspired to keep going and to keep trying.Otherwise, they often feel depressed, angry, bitter, disheartened and just plainmiserable. Movement is sustaining and

eliminates the underlying fear that yourneeds and desires will not be met.

When something or someone is takinga lot of time and making you impatient, you can say that it or they are as slow asmolasses in January. Only a dead snail isslower. Use humor to put things in per-spective.

Sometimes there is not much you cando to make things flow faster or happensooner. You cannot speed things up. Justlike the flow of molasses, you cannot has-ten or rush the outcome. Accept things theway they are for now. Be patient. Be per-sistent. Have faith and trust.

Do not despair. Do not doubt. Do notgive up. Do not lose hope or faith. Yourfaith will keep things moving in the rightdirection. You may not see any progressbut that doesn’t mean that things are notmoving. The changes and the progress maybe imperceptible. You need to believethat things are moving but, just likemolasses, they are moving so slowly thatyou do not see any movement at all.

I urge everyone to see StevenSpielberg’s remarkable achievement in theheroic movie “Lincoln,” about compromise;where satisfying a moral position – embrac-ing of social equality between black andwhite – would have led to defeat of the 13thAmendment. Lincoln was willing to compro-mise on “almost everything – except his ulti-mate destination.” The precise issue wasargued by Lincoln against Senator StephenDouglas in their famous debate in 1858 inIllinois for the U.S. Senate seat.

Lincoln understood that Negro prejudicewas so prevailing that an abolitionist or acandidate espousing social equality of theraces had no chance of being elected. Thedebate centered on the intent of the FoundingFathers. Douglas argued, “I hold that thisgovernment was made by white men, for thebenefit of white men and their posterity for-ever…the signers of the Declaration ofIndependence had no reference to the Negro, when they declared (in the preamble) that all

men are created equal.” According toJeffersonian author James McClellan, “thesigners did not intend to include the Negro orthey would have been bound to abolish slav-ery in every Colony from that very day.”

Lincoln, deploring slavery, made aremarkable interpretation of Jefferson’s pre-amble, which ended up electing himPresident and produced the 13thAmendment, ending slavery. A skilled trialattorney, Lincoln found a provision in theConstitution that provided that Congresscould not consider the possible end to theslave importation trade until 1808. “Thus,”Lincoln argued, “the Founding Fathers hadtaken a step to diminish its possible influ-ence among themselves.” While acknowl-edging the social differences of the races,Lincoln argued that the Declaration shouldbe interpreted to mean that everyone wasequal in the eyes of the Creator and thus enti-tled to eeqquuaall jjuussttiiccee.. The Negro, he argued, was therefore entitled to all that theDeclaration held out, namely, “life, libertyand the pursuit of happiness.” Since Lincoln,Jefferson’s 55 word preamble (whetherintended or not) has grown in meaning tobecome the seminal statement for a mandatefor individual rights “that eventually endedslavery, made women’s suffrage inevitableand sanctioned civil rights for all minori-ties.”

The Jetta is Volkswagen’s best-sellingmodel in the U.S. and for 2013 the sixth-gen-eration German compact sedan gets severaltechnology and interior updates that make iteven better.

The Jetta was redesigned completely in2011 and made bigger with a longer wheel-base and 2.9 inches added to the overalllength. At the front the coupe-like incline ofthe windshield, horizontal lines and horizon-tal blades in the grille and lower intake makethe Jetta look even wider and more dynamic.

A “tornado” line cuts through the largeside surfaces as a sharp crease from the rearedge of the headlight, running beneath thewindows then softening as it reaches the tail-lights. The base of the doors is pushed out-ward and the pronounced wheelarches addvisual width and weight.

Starting with the popular 2.5-liter enginemodels, standard updates to the SE triminclude chrome-trimmed interior switches,

new decorative metallic trim on the dash anddoor panels, and a leather-wrapped steeringwheel, shift knob and handbrake lever.Additional interior enhancements for thefront seat area include an adjustable centerarmrest and power-recline on both seats.Exterior enhancements include a chromeradiator grille and chrome window trim.

The SEL trim adds a six-way power driverseat with manual lumbar support, sport-com-fort driver and front passenger seats, and asoft-touch dash. A two-tone black-and-beigeinterior complements the changes for 2013.

A new trim level, SEL with Navigation, adds the Fender premium audio system andthe RNS-315 touchscreen navigation system.

Even the entry-level Jetta models come verywell equipped. The 2.0-liter Jetta S, with a start-ing price of $16,675, has standard air condition-ing, one-touch auto up/down power windows, power locks with keyless entry and power heat-ed exterior mirrors, along with safety featuressuch as Electronic Stability Control, six airbags,four-wheel disc brakes and Volkswagen’sIntelligent Crash Response System.

The 2013 Jetta lineup offers five engineoptions, including the gasoline 2.0-liter inlinefour-cylinder, 2.5-liter inline five-cylinder,2.0-liter TSI turbocharged four-cylinder, and2.0-liter TDI Clean Diesel. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder that powers the Jetta S and Jetta S

with Sunroof models has two valves percylinder and sequential multi-point fuel injec-tion to deliver 115 hp and 125 pounds-feet oftorque. It’s offered with a five-speed manualor six-speed automatic transmission. With themanual five-speed, fuel economy is estimatedat 24 mpg city and 34 mpg highway.

Volkswagen’s proven 170 hp 2.5-literengine (23/33 mpg) is offered in the 2013Jetta SE, SE with Convenience, SE withConvenience and Sunroof, and SEL models. It has a chain-driven double overheadcamshafts, four valves per cylinder, and

maintenance-free hydraulic valves.Jetta GLI models — GLI, GLI Autobahn

and GLI Autobahn with Navigation — arepowered by a double-overhead cam, 16-valve, 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine that produces 200 hp and 207lb-ft of torque.

Gulfstream Park is out of the startinggate and racing towards an enormous ex-pansion project that will cost over a half abillion dollars. Their ultimate goal is year-round racing and to bring the covetedBreeder's Cup back to South Florida. In order to get a bid for the 2014 Breed-

ers Cup, they want to increase the seatingcapacity at Gulfstream from 20,000 to50,000. If that sounds a little aggressive, keep in mind they managed to drop in 32V.I.P. box seats in less than two weeks. The project includes two 500-room ho-

tels facing the track, a standalone casinoand adjacent concert hall, as well as a 4Dtheatre. "The architectural drawings willbe submitted to the city and the state verysoon, within the next couple of weeks,"said Gulfstream Park President Tim Ritvo.Gulfstream's racing season currently runs

from Dec. 1 through April 5, but with thistype of investment, the Stronach group wouldwant this place bustling more than fourmonths a year, and the city of Hallandale

Beach likes that idea. "If Gulfstream goesyear round, that's going to draw more peoplehere, more people to our local businesses andmore people interested in Hallandale Beach,"said Peter Dobens of Hallandale Beach.Horse racing fans like the idea too, espe-

cially getting a prestigious race card like theBreeder's Cup. "It will bring more peoplehere from all over the world," said racing fanJames Colborn. "I worked here in 1999,when they had the Breeder's Cup and it wasexcellent."Gulfstream says they want to become a

destination resort. In order to do that, youhave to think big and they are thinking bigin bronze. "An ultimate statue of Pegasus isbeing built right now," Ritvo said. "It will be120 feet high, the world’s largest bronzestatue, we believe."Work is expected to begin on April 5th,

the first day after this year's racing seasonends. For more information, call 954-454-7000

If you’re suffering fromback and neck pain, or a sportsor work-related injury, youmay not need surgery to fix it.In many cases, a “physiatrist”,a physician specializing in thenon-surgical treatment of themusculoskeletal system, cannot only relieve the pain, buthelp you prevent it from recur-ring, says Dr. Bryce Elliott Ep-stein, who practices atAventura’s Orthopedic CareCenter since 1990.While it’s usually injuries to professional

athletes that grab the headlines, Dr. Epsteinsays “you don’t have to be pro to incurmajor-league pain from a sports injury. Mid-dle-aged weekend warriors are particularlyprone to spinal injuries.”“Because this is a year round recreational

area, our patients range from golfers and ten-nis players to participants of all team sports. With the influx of young families and themulticultural make up of our community, weare now treating injures from Xtreme sportsto Cricket.Forget “no pain, no gain”: Dr. Epstein

says strength training and a routine ofstretching exercises before and after activitycan not only reduce symptoms but improveyour game as well.Pain management makes up a large por-

tion of a physiatrist’s practice, he says. Anestimated 80 million Americans suffer fromchronic pain due to herniated disks, carpal

tunnel syndrome, tendonitis orother conditions. Nine millionof them are prevented fromworking by these conditions.Physiatrists, also called

physical medicine and rehabil-itation specialists, are trainedto diagnose these conditionsusing cutting-edge diagnostictechnology and to create treat-ment programs that restorepain-free functionality to theentire musculoskeletal system.“That’s why this is often calledthe quality-of- life profession.”Dr. Epstein, was Chairman

of the Department of Rehabilitation at Park-way Regional Medical center in NorthMiami Beach and Medical Director of theEaster Seal Society of South Florida schoolfor physically challenged children. He wasalso the team physician for St. Thomas Uni-versity and medical adviser for WorldOlympians Association. If you’re suffering from back and neckpain, or a sports or work-related injury, youmay not need surgery to fix it. In manycases, a “physiatrist”, a physician specializ-ing in the non-surgical treatment of the mus-culoskeletal system, can not only relieve thepain, but help you prevent it from recurring, says Dr. Bryce Elliott Epstein, who practicesat Aventura’s Orthopedic Care Center since1990.While it’s usually injuries to professional

athletes that grab the headlines, Dr.

Anestimated 80 million Americans suffer fromchronic pain due to herniated disks, carpaltunnel syndrome, tendonitis or other condi-tions. Nine million of them are preventedfrom working by these conditions.Physiatrists, also called physical medicine

and rehabilitation specialists, are trained todiagnose these conditions using cutting-edgediagnostic technology and to create treat-ment programs that restore pain-free func-tionality to the entire musculoskeletalsystem. “That’s why this is often called the

quality-of- life profession.”Dr. Epstein, was Chairman of the Depart-

ment of Rehabilitation at Parkway RegionalMedical center in North Miami Beach andMedical Director of the Easter Seal Societyof South Florida school for physically chal-lenged children. He was also the team physi-cian for St. Thomas University and medicaladviser for World Olympians Association.Like all his associates at the OrthopedicCare Center, he’s on staff at Aventura Hos-pital.The team at the Orthopedic Care Center

consists of eight highly trained and experi-enced orthopedic physicians whose special-ties cover the gamut from joint replacementto sports medicine. Originally established inNorth Miami Beach, the center moved 20years ago to its present address in suite 104at 21000 NE 28th Ave., on the campus ofAventura Hospital & medical Center. For more information, call (305)
