John grew up in the double standardwhich makes it tough to deal in today’sworld.

He is in the paint business selling to job-bers who in turn sell to whole-salers. He had never had troublemaking his contacts because hecould always bend the elbowswith them, have a few drinks, kidabout women. He was a man in amen’s business, with a few drinksand remarks about women.

In a few cases he even suppliedsome women to make the saleseasier.

Now all of a sudden... he has a big prob-lem!

The buyer he has dealt with all theseyears has retired and replaced by, of allthings, a woman; what’s worse is that she isthe daughter of the owner and will some-day replace him.

He had such a good rapport with herfather. They always got together for a nightwith some sharp women, hit some reallytop spots, was always a good time where

the women really came on to them (sup-plied of course by him). The end resultswould always be a great contract as thevisit ended.

An account you could counton. Now a woman buyer.

What do you do? Take her tomale stripper places? Have a fewguys hanging around? If she hitsit right do you supply anovernight guest?

This is a terrible situation. This new buyer might really beinterested in the quality of the

paint and its true price compared to thecompetition. This is a real problem consid-ering the quality of the product his firmmakes. He will now have to really competewith the other companies in the business. What a lousy situation, going against somegood competition.

All because of a woman buyer in a busi-ness that’s really part of a men’s world. What’s even more astounding is... Whatelse can happen? Where are the good oledays?

An iceberg refers to the part that hasbroken off from the main ice pack and isfloating freely and independently in thewater. The visible part of the iceberg is onlythe tip. The largest, heaviest, strongest andmain part is submerged below the surface. It is the submerged part that is the mostdangerous and threatening because it is notvisible to you.

“And that’s just the tip of the iceberg”is a frequently used expression to conveythe enormity of a situation. It implies thatthere is much more than the visible part thatis contributing to the situation. There is theunknown or hidden part as well. You can-not see the whole situation. The expressioncautions the listener to look beneath thesurface and to be aware that there are otherfactors to take into account.

As strange as it sounds, human beingshave a lot in common with icebergs. You

and your conscious mind are the tip of theiceberg. Your subconscious mind is the partof your mind below the level of consciousperception. It contains the hidden elementsand circumstances that determine youractions and reactions in life and the under-lying beliefs and motivations that driveyou. It is the most powerful part of yourbeing. Like the iceberg, it is the unknownthat causes the greatest damage.

To take advantage of the power of yoursubconscious, you need to turn off andrelax your conscious mind and use yourpersonal sonar and radar to scope out andbecome acquainted with the nature of yoursubconscious. Once you understand it andits true nature you can use it to your advan-tage.

The subconscious is always on. It mon-itors every thought that you have. It can beprogrammed to help you overcome, achieve and have everything you want. Itresponds to suggestions, visualizations, repetitions and your expectations. The sub-conscious exists to do your bidding and tomake your desires a reality. Use it wisely.

In 1753, it was only a question of timeuntil the British and French clashed overtheir North American colonies. The Britishcolonies were mainly along the easternseaboard west to the Allegheny Mountains. The French claimed the entire area westthereof, including Canada. Both nationsclaimed the huge Ohio Country, coveringtoday’s Ohio, West Virginia, westernPennsylvania and Indiana. When theBritish granted the newly established “OhioCompany” to encourage settlers by estab-lishing a fort and trading post at the presentsite of Pittsburgh, the French countered bybuilding several forts between Lake Erieand the Ohio River system.

Virginia’s Lt. Governor RobertDinwiddie was empowered to create achain of forts in the disputed area. George, age 21, a surveyor familiar with the fron-tier, was sent to deliver to the French anultimatum to vacate the Ohio Country. TheFrench marshaled 1500 soldiers and

responded that they would arrest anyBritish poaching on the Ohio Country.

George, appointed by Dinwiddie as Lt.Colonel, was authorized to train 100Virginia militia, to be joined by othertroops and friendly Indians. George’sinstructions provided that the Frenchshould peacefully depart and if they failedto comply, he was authorized “to drivethem off by force of arms.” On May 28,according to George, they were encampednear Great Meadows, when a group of 35French troops encamped nearby spied onhis troops. Convinced of their hostile inten-tions, George’s men encircled them. TheFrench fired upon his troops. Washingtonresponded, ordering return fire. Ten Frenchwere killed with another 21 captured. TheFrench denied shooting first. It became aworldwide incident when one of the victimsbore “an important diplomatic message tothe British demanding their evacuationfrom the Ohio Country.” The French calledGeorge an assassin against peaceful sol-diers, whereas he was embraced as a hero inVirginia. The opening shot precipitated theFrench and Indian War, known in Europeas the Seven Years’ War. In the words of aBritish statesman, “The volley fired by ayoung Virginian in the backwoods ofAmerica set the world on fire.”

President and CEO, attributes the medicalcenter’s success to the board of trustees, itsdonors and medical staff who embrace thehospital’s mission. “Mount Sinai was estab-lished 60 years ago, with the help of vision-ary community leaders who responded to theneed for a new hospital on Miami Beach,”Sonenreich said. “Philanthropy continues toplay a role today as does our focus on deliv-ering results-driven academic care that isboth high quality and cost efficient.”According to Fitch Ratings, by June 30,

2012, Mount Sinai held $186.6 million ofunrestricted cash and investments, equiva-lent to about 154 days cash on hand – an in-crease of 63 days since 2008. When older adults from South Floridaconsider their senior living options, the on-site care center at a continuing care retire-ment community (CCRC) is as important asother lifestyle areas found there – the pri-vate independent residents, stylish diningrooms and the state of the art physical fit-ness venues. So says JoAnne Carlin, VP ofResident Care at Vi, a developer of olderadult living communities, including Vi atAventura.“For those considering a CCRC as their

retirement option, its important as part ofthe overall equation to evaluate thestrengths of the care center. Because a res-ident of a CCRC like Vi helps one to enjoytoday but also plan for future care needs thatmay arise as one ages” says Carlin.Among the important care center factors

to consider are:• Number of staff and skill level – what

is the staffing ratio for RNs, LPNs, andCNAs? In addition to skilled nursing, Viassisted living and memory support venues

are staffed 24/7 by licensed nurses and ded-icated caregivers.• Staff training- what training is staff pro-

vided? Vi’s commitment to employee train-ing and development has been recognizedwith several national awards.• Technology- how is technology used by

the care center? At Vi their care center tech-nology includes Wi-Fi for residents andelectronic health records in skilled nursingand electronic medication administrationrecords in skilled nursing, assisted living andmemory support for better communication.• Lifestyle integration- how well is what’s

going on in independent living integratedinto assisted living and care venues? WhileVi may have to make modifications basedon an individual’s functional and cognitiveability, every attempt to uphold the ameni-ties one will find in the independent livingsetting is found when residing in assistedliving or receiving skilled nursing care.To arrange for a tour at Vi Aventura, call

One of the goals of acondominium associa-tion’s annual election isto provide the memberswith the opportunity toselect new individualsto serve on the board ofdirectors. There are nu-merous requirementsthat must be met before this can happen.A first notice of annual meeting and elec-

tion is sent out 60 days before the meetingand election. Candidates must submit theirnotices of candidacy at least 40 days beforethe election, and, if they so desire, their can-didate information sheets at least 35 daysprior. Then, a second notice of annual meet-ing and election is sent out not less than 14days before.According to Joshua Krut, a partner with

Weiss Serota Helman Pastorica Cole &Boniske, the balloting process is highly reg-ulated. “Ballots are placed in an inner en-velope, which is then placed in an outerenvelope that –among other requirements –is to be signed by the unit owner and list theunit number. This complexity can be ampli-fied by the fact that so many owners inAventura live abroad – oftentimes twoweeks is not sufficient time to return theirballots,” said Krut. Nevertheless, condo-minium law does not provide for an absenteeballot process. “If the ballots are not cast and

counted by a specific date, owners have losttheir right to vote,” he added. All ballots are verified by checking the

outer envelopes against the association’sunit owner roster to determine that onlythose who have the right to vote are voting.Next, the outer envelopes are opened andput aside to preserve the privacy of the vot-ers. Then, the inner envelopes are openedand the votes are counted.Eligibility to serve on a condominium as-

sociation’s board of directors is governed bya myriad of rules and regulations, includingthe Florida Condominium Act and the asso-ciation’s governing documents. Interest-ingly, some documents require that directorsbe unit owners within the association whileother documents do not. Thus, in somecommunities, your neighbor in the buildingdown the street has the right to serve on yourboard of directors.Condominium Association elections are a

highly technical process. Associationsshould be sure to consult legal and manage-ment professionals before preparing theirannual meeting notices this year.Joshua Krut is a Partner at Weiss Serota

The DiabecticFoundation.org was foundedin 2006 by Joseph and Maxine Haber. AfterMr. Haber developed diabetes, he found thatthe cost for this new medical condition wastaxing, even though he was a successful en-trepreneur. Initially, diagnosis can be over-whelming because of the numerous medicalbills and prescription costs, even with ex-cellent health insurance. It was this fact thatled Mr. and Mrs. Haber to establish theirfoundation to help families in need of finan-cial support for the maintenance of juvenilediabetes. The DiabeticFoundation.org is a one-of-

a-kind organization that focuses on the"Here and Now" needs of families with di-abetes. They provide immediate cash grantsto help families with co-pays, medical sup-plies and other expenses associated with di-abetes. The foundation is also involved inother community causes that bring aware-ness to diabetes, obesity prevention, health,

nutrition and hunger.“Raising money to help these families is

a personal mission for me,” says JosephHaber, Executive Director of DiabeticFoun-dation.org. “Having been diagnosed withtype 2 diabetes, I am aware of the financialimpact this disease has on families.”The foundation’s fundraising efforts have

taken many forms. Most noticeably, thefoundation worked in conjunction withAMC 24 Theaters and Aventura Mall tohost a private film screening and silent auc-tion. The rooflineconnects with the pronounced shoulderline, leading to sculpted flanks and accentu-ating the extended wheelbase. Flared wheelarches and a raked cabin create a sedan witha graceful muscular presence.

On the inside, the instrument panel iscontoured toward the driver to create a“cockpit” feel, with precise gauges and

steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The seats and trim are of Nappa leather, with wood interior accents, an electronicparking brake and a first aid kit. A sport-inspired Sportmatic shifter delivers crispshifts, while an available panoramic sun-roof provides an open-air feeling.
