Hello & welcome to the all new Amber Valley Voice—Alfreton & Villages edition. Although we have been delivering to some of this area for over a year now, we decided to split the current Alfreton & Broadmeadows magazine and make this magazine purely about Alfreton & the surrounding villages. With this in mind, we started the theme with the front cover. This photo was submitted by a local photographer and you can find out more information about him if you visit ….www.alecmalbonphotography.com. Everybody knows where this is don’t they!! Also, on page 2, we have a wonderful local beautician who we have teamed up with to offer a fantastic manicure this month. All you need to do is complete the quiz and send the answers to me in an e-mail and the first name out of the hat will WIN this fabulous prize. As if this wasn’t enough, we also have a voucher submitted by Alfreton Hall for Afternoon tea...see page 12 for this offer. It really shouldn't be missed. We also have a new out & about diary which is purely for this area, if you would like to add to this, drop Carla an e-mail on the address below and a we also have a wonderful local walk with proceeds going to St Martins Church...see page 6. Please keep the local
information coming through.
See you next month,
Emily

This month we have a slightly strenuous but very rewarding walk from Ogston reservoir up into the local hills for some fantastic views. As usual there are lots of opportunities to let your dog off the lead but there are some small stretches of road to walk along so take good care. We always want to hear your favourite local walks so please drop us a line. You don’t need to have a map or even a detailed description, just let us know roughly where you go and you may see it featured in the magazine soon. Email at [email protected] or by calling Emily on 01773 604178 or 07891 639638.
7 mile walk From Ogston Reservoir by Ravensnest Wood This is a tough but attractive walk for you and your dog with some
fantastic views. The route will take around 2 1/2 to 3 hours. There are some steep climbs and descents and the terrain can be muddy and uneven so a

10. Follow the path as it passes through the wood and then exits. Carry on alongside the wood keeping your eye out for a gate on your right. Enter the wood and walk down the steep, stepped path. After exiting the wood head for a gate ahead of you and follow the path that takes you past a house.
11. As it reaches the long driveway turn left onto path marked by posts. Cross a small bridge and turn right onto a road. Carry on along the road until you reach the Miners Arms. Turn right onto another road and then take a left onto Brown Lane.
12. At the End of Brown Lane cross straight over at the T-junction onto the bridle-way. At the end of the bridleway take the metal gate on your left and walk on with the wall/hedge on your right. Cross a stile to enter a wood.
13. After exiting the wood follow the path alongside the fields until you meet the B6014. Turn left and cross the road before taking Quarry Lane on the right. This will bring you back to the road you began on, which you can follow back to the car park.

This month Carla and I popped along to
Alfreton Hall to sample a Sparkling Afternoon
Tea for two and we can’t recommend it highly
enough.
We were greeted upon arrival by Laura and
taken to our table and served with a delicious
glass of bubbles. This allowed us a little time to
take in this beautifully renovated country house
steeped in local history.
When our tea was delivered (see picture below)
we were amazed when we received one each! It
was easy to tell that the sandwiches were
freshly made and the presentation was
exquisite. There were 6 sandwich selections for
each person;
Scottish smoked salmon & caper may-
onnaise
Traditional roast ham
Free range chicken with celery &
almond
Cucumber & cream cheese
English mature cheddar
Egg mayonnaise bridge roll
The cakes were delightful too and I’m not
ashamed to say that when I saw that Carla was
struggling to finish all her cakes...I may have
helped her out somewhat!
It certainly helps that the setting is so beautiful
and serene that it is a little haven away from the
everyday chaos. So next time you are looking
for somewhere to go for lunch, which feels like
you are tucked away in the heart of the peak
district but is actually within 15 minutes of
home, look no further than Alfreton Hall.
It really is such a treat.
Just remember to
phone in advance
and make that
booking because
this best kept
secret is now
out!! Carla enjoying afternoon tea

Your April accounting questions
answered
This month our friendly neighbourhood accountant, James, has a couple of FAQ’s for you to consider…...
Q. I have put my business up for sale. I am self-employed and not VAT registered, but the proceeds from the business sale will take me over the VAT threshold. Do I have to register for VAT and charge VAT on the sale of the business?
A. If you sell the business assets and goodwill together, so that the purchaser can pick up where you stop and carry on the business, it will be treated as being a transfer of a going concern and outside the scope of VAT. So you don't have to charge VAT on the business sale or register for VAT. More information about transferring a business as a 'going concern' is given in the VAT leaflet no. 700/9: Transfer of a business as a going concern.
Q. Our son is now old enough to attend nursery. Can my company, as my employer, help out with the nursery fees?
A. Your company can provide you with childcare vouchers to be redeemed at registered child care providers, and the
first £55 per week of vouchers will be tax and NI free. If both parents work for the company they can each get £55 worth of child care vouchers per week. However, if you pay tax at 40%, you can only receive £28 per week of vouchers tax fee. Those that pay tax at the new highest rate of 45% (from 6 April 2013) can only receive up to £25 per week of tax free vouchers. The company must offer childcare vouchers to all it's employees who work at the same site, it cannot exclude any employees, but employees can opt out. However, only parents with children aged under 16 can qualify for childcare vouchers. There are a number of other rules which are set out in the HMRC booklet E18: How you can help your employees with childcare.
Do you have a tax question that you would like answered? If so e-mail [email protected]
