hua hin, ThaiLanDOur issue back in the middle of november last year proclaimed the early announcement of this year’s hua hin Jazz Festival, which was to be organised by the Passion4Share agency, and held in June; unfortunately in May this year the agency announced their withdrawal from managing the event, citing a ‘lack of confidence in organizing a quality event’ and the reluctance of tourists and tour groups to travel to the event in what was perceived as a risk because of the political situation.a smaller event has now been organised by BOFFO Thailand and the hua hin Municipality, the Jazz up hua hin Jazz Festival 2014, and will take place on Saturday 26th July 2014 from 5pm to midnight. The venue will be at hua hin Queen’s Park (Suan Rachinee national Park), often referred to as simply 19 Rai. as with the previous festivals the event is free for everyone to attend.The line-up of artists consists of The Saxophone Madness, a jam session of leading saxophonists in Thailand with saxophonist, Tong Tewan, as a special guest. This is followed by trumpeter Steve Cannon, with his special show “a Tribute to Chet Baker”.There will be a ‘Pop’ interlude with competitors from Thai TV singing competitions such as The Star, The Voice, KPn and Thailand Jazz Singing Contest. This will be followed by a highly acclaimed band from Japan - The Travelers, followed by well known Thailand-based fusion jazz band The infinity. Soul after Six will conclude the night with their well-known ‘sing along songs’ and featuring songs from their new album.While this year’s line up is inevitably shorn of the type of international jazz acts that have been seen in previous years, due to the uncertainty leading up to it, the organisers must be commended for staging the latest instalment, and we must hope that 2015 sees a return to the festival’s roots.

Crows are perhaps an odd choice as, unlike many birds that migrate over long distances, their flight isn’t especially straight. Crows normally fly in large wheeling arcs, looking for food.The earliest known citation of the phrase, which explicitly defines its meaning, comes in The London Review Of English and Foreign Liturature, by W. pension?if you answered yes to the above, then read on.holders of uK pensions that have moved overseas often face difficulties with their pension schemes as the pension benefits are usually frozen in the uK. Further, if you leave your pension in the uK and something were to happen to you, the uK government could apply a tax on the pension pot, sometimes as much as 55%. This would result in less money for the remaining spouse or beneficiary. This is often the case for those holding uK pensions however, is there anything that can be done to improve the position? if you are living in Thailand as a non-uK resident

then the answer is yes…, and it comes in the form of a QROPS. QROPS were introduced in april 2006 in order to simplify pensions and allow uK Pension holders to access their funds in their country of residence. a QROPS can also have significant tax advantages.

• What is a QROPS?a Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme (QROPS) is an overseas pension scheme that (i) has met the requirements of the hMRC, (ii) that can receive the transfer of uK Pension Benefits without penalties for unauthorised payments. • What are the benefits?

There are many benefits to a QROPS. here are a few. Firstly, if something were to happen to you, the 55% death charge tax on your uK pension can be avoided. Secondly, you can pass 100% of your remaining pension onto your loved ones. Further, a QROPS will also allow you to take investment control of your pension funds.• i have more than one uK pension? Can i consolidate

them into one plan?Yes. Rather than having a complex web of finances, a QROPS can consolidate your pensions into one pot. This makes your financial planning much simpler and saves you having to sift through various different schemes. • i have already started drawing down my pension.

Can i still transfer into a QROPS?Yes, provided that you aren’t (i) drawing down from a final salary scheme/defined benefit scheme or (ii) receiving an annuity.• how much do i need to have in my pension pot in

LaST OF ThE SuMMER WinE?Once upon a time in hua hin most expats gathered in their bar of choice in order to watch major sporting events. in the days before farang home ownership really took off, and even, shocking as it may seem, before there was a Tesco in town, cable TV in rented homes was the norm. and although cable did guarantee a constant supply of the Simpsons, it wasn’t quite up to coverage of events like the World Cup or Wimbledon. So it was down to the bar to watch footy, tennis, golf and F1.Of course technological progress has brought us huge screen TV’s, which can still draw people to a bar to watch sport. Even here in little old hull there are people flocking as i write to pubs in order to watch the World Cup on screens which are bigger than my living room.. Or at least they were flocking until Englands’ efforts came to nothing, and Suarez’ propensity for cannibalism caused a mass switch over to Wimbledon.neither of which i’m afraid - football or tennis - float my boat. So it was a relief last weekend to have the welcome diversion of the Glastonbury Festival on no less than three Freeview TV channels in the uK.Coincidentally an article about ageing rockers had appeared in a popular tabloid just the week before. Citing certain Rolling Stones and Sir Paul McCartney as being well past their best. and i have to agree. Sir Paul should really have retired before the last Olympic Games. Some of the Stones have a bit more going for them - God knows how - they just

do. But i personally wouldn’t pay to see them again after their urban Jungle tour in the 80’s. not because it was bad - far from it - i just don’t think it could be bettered.The reality is though that in the uK at least there is a resurgence of old rockers who simply refuse to rest on their laurels and retire gracefully. Maybe it has a lot to do with the inadequacies of uK pensions, or maybe not, as the Eagles are also up and about again, and they certainly haven’t paid national insurance stamps.But although some old rockers can still get away with it - the likes of The Who are a good example - there are others who quite frankly have lost the plot. Which is where our female readers will probably understand more. Especially if, like me, they watched Bryan Ferry at Glastonbury. he has certainly aged well. That lean figure can still carry the narrow black trousers and snazzy jacket. The voice is still the same. But something has gone from those eyes which once made us weak at the knees. Botox certainly has a lot to answer for.This weeks’ word is for those of you who suffer from travel sickness and have to take medication for it. as we all know medicines of all kinds were originally derived from plants, and one plant substance still used in potions for travel sickness is hYOSCinE.hyoscine is poisonous, but hopefully the pharmaceutical industry will know exactly how little of it you need to settle your stomach safely.
