HUA HIN, THAILAND The deaths of three elephants last week near Kaeng Krachan national park after they were electrocuted on a fence erected by a gardener at a meditation center has been followed by the arrest of the gardener, Sompong Yapakdi, 46, who confessed to putting electrified wire around the village pond to stop the elephants accessing the water, and this week the owner of the centre has been charged with encroaching on state land. Burapha Padhungthai, 56, owner of the Asom Burapa meditation centre in tambon Huai Sat Yai, reported to Pol Col Bancha Panpradub, deputy chief of the Natural Resources and Environmental Crime Division, on Sunday to acknowledge the charge. An investigation had found the centre was built on royal project land that was allocated to poor farmers and prohibited from being sold according to a cabinet resolution 38 years ago. Mr Burapha promised to knock down the buildings. The centre covers 83 rai of land, 53 rai of which encroached on the state land under the supervision of Prachuap Khiri Khan’s Office of Social Development and Human Security. After being questioned for three hours, Mr Burapha admitted the encroachment but said his family purchased plots from villagers 10 years ago without knowing some were part of a royal project and could not change hands. He said he had paid land tax to Huai Sat Yai Tambon Administration Organisation every year but officials had never told him the land could not be sold. Investigations are ongoing to find out if any more state land has been sold, while police and other officials will ask farmers and other residents in the area to stop erecting electric fences and use other non-harmful methods to stop animals going on their land. TauRuS apr 21 – May 21After years of loneliness, you’ll

find the only other person on Earth who cares about cuttlefish as much as you do, inspiring a mutual hatred that will last the rest of your short and violent lives.

GEMini May 22 – June 21You firmly believe that prayer is

a beneficial practice for ordering your thoughts and sorting out your feelings, but only if enough people see you doing it.

CanCER Jun 22 – Jul 22You will come closer to your

own elemental nature this week when a sudden lance of white-hot plasma reduces you to your component atoms.

LEO Jul 23 – aug 22You were never certain whether

or not life is better with a little bit of mystery until you figured out exactly what that smell is.

ViRGO aug 23 – Sep 22You had always believed that there

were two kinds of people in this world, but that was before you discovered the existence of the Germans.

LiBRa Sep 23 – Oct 23Your joy at discovering that there

is indeed meaning and purpose to life is short-lived when it turns out to involve a bunch of difficult stuff that isn’t a lot of fun.

SCORPiO Oct 24 – nov 21You’ll revolutionize the dating

industry when you combine advanced physics, chemistry and genetics to ensure that you are in fact the last man on Earth.

SaGiTTaRiuS nov 22 – Dec 21In outer space there is in fact no

such thing as “up” or “down,” so it’s not clear if you’ll be falling forever or rising forever through the universe.

CaPRiCORn Dec 22 - Jan 19It is beneficial for a compassionate

and intelligent person to stop now and again to consider the magnificence of human endeavor, so it is fortunate indeed that Mark Trail is still in print.

aquaRiuS Jan 20 – Feb 18You’re a firm believer that travel

broadens the mind, which is one reason why you haven’t been outside of Missouri in more than 15 years.

PiSCES Feb 19 – Mar 20It’s rare that people can live a

happy, healthy life without friends, so the crushing depression you’re feeling is perfectly normal.

aRiES Mar 21 - apr 20Your belief that nothing can

stop you will be tested this week by depression, procrastination, concrete barriers, dysentery, armed gunmen, and the unanimous passage of several laws targeted specifically at stopping you.

This week it is..... Life begins at fortyLife begins to be better in one’s middle age.The notion that ‘life begins at forty’ is a 20th century one; prior to that it was more accurate to say ‘death begins at forty’ as most people didn’t live much beyond that age. Life expectancy in mediaeval England was around 25 years and only reached forty sometime around the turn of the 20th century. By the 1930s many, in western societies at least, could expect a decent spell of reasonably affluent retirement, free from work and the responsibilities of childcare. household gadgets like washing machines and vacuum cleaners were becoming more widely used and had begun to relieve women’s drudgery and offer them increasing amounts of leisure time as compared to their Victorian mothers.in 1932, the american psychologist Walter Pitkin published the self-help book Life Begins at Forty. Pitkin stated confidently:Life begins at forty. This is the revolutionary outcome of our New Era. Today it is half a truth. Tomorrow it will be an axiom.Pitkin is often credited with coining the phrase and, while it is true that his popular book was the cause of it becoming part of the language, he wasn’t the first to express the idea, or even the phrase itself. The take-up of the idea was rapid and ‘life begins at forty’ appears many times in newspapers and other printed records from 1932 onwards. This was propelled further into the american consciousness in 1937 via a recording of the song ‘Life begins at Forty’, written by Yellen and Shapiro and sung by Sophie Tucker.however, we need to go back a way to find the origin of the phrase. The great 19th century German philosopher arthur Schopenhauer came close to it with his view:“The first forty years of life give us the text: the next thirty supply the commentary.”

in keeping with the reduction of the toil of domestic work and child rearing that began freeing up women’s free time to some extent at the start of the 20th century, the first reference to life beginning at forty refers specifically to women.Mrs. Theodore Parsons was Physical Director of Schools in Chicago and, in 1912, wrote Brain Culture Through Scientific Body Building. it wasn’t a runaway best-seller, but the arrival of the uSa in the First World War in 1917 gave her views a new lease of life. in april of that year The Pittsburgh Press printed a feature on Mrs. Parsons and her no-nonsense opinions about the benefits of a brisk exercise programme that she acquired from her soldier husband (Mr. Theodore Parsons was, sadly, recently deceased - presumably from exhaustion):“The average woman does not know how to breathe, sit, stand or walk. Now I want women to train for the special duties which may devolve upon them in war time. Death begins at thirty, that is, deterioration of the muscle cells sets in. Attention to diet and exercise would enable men and women to live a great deal longer than they do today. The best part of a woman’s life begins at forty.”What special duties Mrs. Parsons had in mind, stationed as she was in Chicago, isn’t clear. The paper was good enough to include a graphic of the dynamic couple, demonstrating their method in action, so you can give it a try and see if it works.Life expectancy has continued to move on and forty now seems no age at all. in 1991, the new York Times printed this opinion:All our age benchmarks, which used to seem solid as rocks, have turned into shifting sands. ‘Life begins at 40? More like 60’.

DEBT anD BaiLOuTS it is a slow day in a damp little irish town. The rain is beating down and the streets are deserted. Times are tough, everybody is in debt, and everybody lives on credit. On this particular day a rich German tourist is driving through the own, stops at the local hotel and lays a €100 note on the desk, telling the hotel owner he wants to inspect the rooms upstairs in order to pick one to spend the night. The owner gives him some keys and, as soon as the visitor has walked upstairs, the hotelier grabs the €100 note and runs next door to pay his debt to the butcher. The butcher takes the €100 note and runs down the street to repay his debt to the pig farmer. The pig farmer takes the €100 note and heads off to pay his bill at the supplier of feed and fuel. The guy at the Farmers’ Co-op takes the €100 note and runs to pay his drinks bill at the pub.The publican slips the money along to the local lady-of-ill-repute drinking at the bar, who has also been facing hard times and has had to offer him “services” on credit. The lady-of-ill-repute then rushes to the hotel and pays off her room bill to the hotel owner with the €100 note. The hotel proprietor then places the €100 note back on the counter so the rich traveller will not suspect anything. at that moment the traveller comes down the stairs, picks up the €100 note, states that the rooms are not satisfactory, pockets the money, and leaves town.no one produced anything. no one earned anything.however, the whole town is now out of debt and looking to the future with a lot more optimism.

and that, Ladies and Gentlemen, is how the Greek bailout package has been working for 10+ years, and has now ground to a halt…

Do you like to cook?is cooking your hobby? is cooking a passion?

come and join us in our newHua Hin Hobby cooking Members group

The cooking sessions are once a month. Each member has a chance to host the group in their home and make dinner for them. There are no guidelines as far as what to cook, as long as the meal is homemade and they provide the recipes. Costs are shared and each member brings their

own drinks. My idea was to regularly gather people who have the same passion; cooking. As there are many nationalities it will be exciting to discover new food cultures and to share recipes. A cooking group is also a social event; cooking together is fun and is an opportunity to make new friends. You do not need to be a chef in order to join the group. Whatever your level of cooking is, most important is that you like cooking, are open to new ideas and are prepared to participate regularly at the members’ cooking sessions. If you are interested in receiving more information you

inVESTiGaTiOn naTiOnSome of you might have seen the BBC’s ‘Masterchef’ programme, or its’ spin off ‘Celebrity Masterchef’if you haven’t don’t panic, you’re not missing too much and it isn’t essential to this story, which is more to do with our perceptions of vegetarianism. On a recent edition of Celebrity Masterchef, the contestants were given assorted ingredients from which to create a meal. One of them had to make a vegetarian meal, and opted for vegetable stew with suet dumplings.until than i hadn’t realised that you can get vegetarian suet, which somehow doesn’t seem quite right. Like those terrible vegetarian sausages. There is nothing wrong with people not wanting to eat animals, but why do they feel the need to eat things which are made to look like animal products but aren’t? i mean - have you carnivores ever felt the urge to eat a steak made to look like a vegetable? Of course you haven’t.But i was reminded of a story from Thailand, when a customer at an eatery not too far from you ordered a veggie burger. When it arrived the burger was clearly made from beef, so the customer brought the problem to the attention of the waitress, who replied ‘it OK. Cow eat grass.’England has been seeing a spate of anniversaries recently. 10 years since the London bombings, 30 years since the Live aid concerts (where has the time gone!) and also 30 years since that often overlooked fire at Bradford Citys’ football ground, Valley Parade, which claimed 56 lives. One Bradford City fan in the ill fated wooden main stand that day was 12 year old Martin Fletcher, who had gone to the match with his father, brother, grandfather and uncle. Martin was the only one of that family group to go home again. Just four years later, on april 15th 1989, he was also able to walk away from the hillsborough disaster.it wasn’t until 2000 that Martin began to fully investigate the facts surrounding the Bradford City fire, and his book on the subject, ‘56: The Story of the Bradford Fire’, was published earlier this year. although Martin leaves the reader to reach their own conclusion, the facts are disturbing.in 1983, two years before the fire, local businessman Stafford heginbotham had bought the club for just £20,000. Bradford City hadn’t been doing very well. its’ only major trophy win had been the Fa Cup in 1911. But by the time of the fire, at its’ final home game of the season against Lincoln City, Bradford had already secured promotion to Division Two.The promotion meant that long overdue improvements to the ground would finally have to be made. not least to the 74 year old wooden main stand, which West

Yorkshire County Council, amongst other authorities, had expressed safety concerns over just a year earlier.heginbotham had financial difficulties. Bradford City FC was just one of his businesses. Eight other similar fires had occurred at other properties which he owned, and by January 1986 his toy factory was wound up with debts of 5 million pounds in todays money. in total heginbotham received insurance payouts from assorted fires equivalent to 27 million pounds today.Meanwhile the Valley Parade ground was rebuilt after the fire using money from other sources. Grants from West Yorkshire County Council and the Football Grounds improvements Trust, plus a fire insurance payment, which combined actually left the club in credit. in 1987 heginbotham sold his stake for 450,000 pounds, and retired into tax exile in Jersey where he died in 1995.We often criticise investigations carried out by the Thai authorities, forgetting that in the uK investigations can often be sadly lacking. it took many years of campaigning by the families of hillsborough victims before that case was re-opened, which in March this year saw the then Chief Superintendant in charge at the Sheffield/Liverpool match finally admit that he had been at fault. One of the people instrumental in having the hillsborough enquiry re-opened was the MP andy Burnham, who is now calling for a fresh investigation into the Bradford fire.Of course no amount of new evidence or fresh investigations will bring back the victims, which could account for our farang interpretation of the ‘Thai way’, in that Buddhism places a whole different meaning on death. it’s happened, it was meant to happen, and nothing will change that so let’s just get on and not waste time. and there is some sense in that way of thinking. But there is also the ‘saving face’ element in Thai justice which there can be no doubt influences the British justice system as well, and that is what we farang have difficulty with. Because we want to be able to have complete faith that our own systems always work. But although the hillsborough outcome has been a step in the right direction, there is clearly still a long way to go.

‘Fifty-Six: The Story of the Bradford Fire’ is published by Bloomsbury Sport.

Word of the week for once might be useful! a ‘Francolin’ is a large game bird native to africa and South asia, which is similar to a partridge.
