HUA HIN, THAILAND Air services to and from Hua Hin airport are about to receive another expansion next month as Nok Air has announced flights to and from Bangkok’s Don Mueang airport. This follows last year’s introduction of international flights to and from Kuala Lumpur by Benjaya Air, although some reports have claimed this service has been unreliable. The Nok Air service will run three days a week, on Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays with one flight in each direction and is obviously aimed at the weekenders from Bangkok. Flight times are as follows; depart Hua Hin at 8:10pm, arrival at Don Mueang at 8:50pm, and depart Don Mueang at 7:15pm, arriving in Hua Hin at 7:45pm. Unfortunately these times do not connect very well with other Nok Air services but the flights will still be a viable alternative to avoid slow trains or potentially risky, and sometimes lengthy, road journeys, particularly at weekends. The fares will appeal more to solo travellers than families, but are competitively priced from 1,299 baht one way, and depending on the required check in time before boarding could save a lot of time, with good transport infrastructure at the old international airport. The flights are due to begin on 15th November with a free baggage allowance of 15 kilos. The Nok Air booking page states that the planes operating on the route will be SAAB 340 jets, which can carry up to 37 passengers depending on configuration. Flights to and from the capital have been operated before, but unfortunately have never lasted long due to a variety of causes; however the growth of Hua Hin and Cha Am up to now and in the future should ensure that this service has a much better chance of taking off and staying aloft. CurSeD LuCK?By roger norwoodevery country has superstitions, with Western countries tending towards some universally accepted ones, such as it is bad luck to walk under a ladder, anything to do with the number 13, and opening an umbrella indoors, and some have an element of logic about them.Thailand has a plethora of superstitions that seem to vary depending on what part of the country you are talking about, but there are a few ‘standard’ ones that presumably began life for a good reason that has now been lost in the mists of time.The first one i cam across was one Wednesday many years ago in Bangkok when i was trying to find a barbers to get my hair cut;

every barber i could find was shut, and i discovered subsequently that apparently it is bad luck to have your hair cut on a Wednesday!another fairly commonly occurring belief is to do with which direction a bed, and consequently the people who sleep in it, lay; the head must not point towards the West as this is how corpses are laid out before cremation.Sweeping the house is another ordinary practice that can only be done at certain times according to another Thai superstition, or rather there is a time when it is bad luck to sweep, which is after darkness falls.Jinjoks, the small lizards that infest every house in the land, can be the cause of good or bad fortune, depending on the circumstances,

which are too many and varied to go into here.new borns and their mothers are also subject to some superstitious rituals, such as the shaving of the baby’s head, or mother and baby staying inside the house for one month to avoid any strong odours - apparently a strong whiff of something will cause the baby to be sickly during their life, although it behoves me to ask if the baby’s own emissions are excluded in this?Fingers crossed, and touch wood, none of the readers will either break any of these superstitions unwittingly nor suffer ill luck should they do so, but just to make sure, ‘break a leg’ and don’t mention Shakespeare’s ‘Scottish play’!

CoLoraDo, uSa is hotel that inspired Stephen King’s The Shining brave to dig up adjacent pet cemetery?The owners of the hotel which inspired Stephen King’s The Shining have decided that in order to accommodate the building of a new pavilion on its grounds, they are going to have to excavate none other than a pet cemetery – what could possibly go wrong?The Stanley hotel in estes Park, Colorado, first opened its doors in 1909, and has welcomed distinguished political and artistic figures, including King and his wife.after being immortalised in the horror book the hotel is still going strong, and has now decided to expand its wedding and corporate offering with another building on its land. The unfortunate pet cemetery which is in the way will have to be dug up and the graves will be moved elsewhere.The announcement hasn’t pleased believers of the supernatural, however. ‘Stirring up the bones of the dead’ is a recipe for paranormal disaster, local medium rosemary Mcarthur told the Coloradoan. Problems with the construction such as burst pipes and delays could hinder the project if spirits that are stuck ‘between this world and the other world’ are disturbed, she added.

STaFForDShire, uK Fun-loving biker asks mourners to pay tribute wearing fancy dressSuperman, Batman and the honey Monster were among the mourners at a biker’s funeral. Those attending Gary Pattison’s funeral were asked to wear fancy dress to remember their friend, who one said had ‘a wicked sense of humour’. also present among the 250 friends and family were Fred Flintstone, a Star Wars stormtrooper and Super Mario. They were greeted at the crematorium by a fire-breather and juggler before a final message from Mr Pattison that asked those who wanted to make a speech during the service to use words such as ‘bacon’ and ‘discombobulated’.he also wanted ‘what’s left of my savings’ to be put behind the bar, but no Beatles or Paul Weller songs were to be played. The 42,-year-old, of newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, added: ‘in the words of Warner Brothers, “That’s all folks!” enjoy and do me proud.’The motorbike instructor died five days after he was involved in a collision near Leek on august 26.he leaves a daughter, Becca, 13.

This week it is..... Shrinking violeta shy or modest person.anyone encountering this expression for the first time might be excused for being confused. You might wonder who Violet was and why she might be reducing in size. The english language is chock-full of phrases that include people’s names, for example ‘For Pete’s sake’, ‘Davy Jones’ locker’, ‘Jimmy riddle’ and so on. By and large, with some notable exceptions like ‘Sweet Fanny adams’, these don’t refer to real people. The violet in this case isn’t an imaginary diffident woman but a flower. as for the shrinking, we don’t mean reducing in size but modestly recoiling.The Viola family of flowers includes violets and pansies, which are polychrome extroverts that seem just the opposite of shy. Their colourfulness makes them a favourite of municipal plantsmen around the world and even the horticulturally challenged amongst you must have seen them adorning park flowerbeds and traffic islands. however, the phrase ‘shrinking violet’ was coined in the uK before selective breeding turned the plants into images of steroidal blousiness. The native english violet (Viola odorata, known as the wood violet)

is, as seems appropriate for our small green island, a reclusive and understated flower.in a poetry magazine called The indicator, the poet and essayist Leigh hunt drew attention to the modest wood violet: There was the buttercup, struggling from a white to a dirty yellow; and a faint-coloured poppy; and here and there by the thorny underwood a shrinking violet.The expression is now mainly used figuratively to describe modest and introverted individuals. That usage is first found in the uSa. an early example in print comes from the Pennsylvania newspaper The Titusville herald, november 1870. The rather sarcastic article is about the new York businessman William Tweed, who was widely believed to have stolen large amounts of public money: ...deputations of the tax payers of New York waiting upon Mr. Tweed with the title-deeds of their mansions and the shrinking violet Tweed begging them to pardon his rosy blushes. Can it be that he is a humbug?a search for ‘shrinking violet’ online these days brings up links to a weight reduction method that women may use to magically ‘reduce by a dress size in one treatment’, which nicely brings us back to where we started.

a neW aSSiGnMenTas well as its climate, beaches, scenery and nightlife, Thailand is of course well known for its lady boys, or Katoeys, and has become a popular destination for foreigners seeking gender re-assignment surgery.That is the politically correct term for what we have always called sex change operations, so i’ll stick to what we are familiar with. it’s easier to type.a few thousand miles away hull now has its own claim to fame, as the home town of the first double sex change couple in Britain to get married.if that sounds confusing - it is - though hopefully not for the couple involved, a man who has changed sex to a woman, and a woman who has changed sex to a man. They had both been married before, have 10 children between them, and met at a transgender support group.it is not uncommon for people to feel pressured or obliged to lead lives which they know aren’t right for them, and there are many, like our couple, who have had children before finding the courage to seek help with their gender issues. But the uK doesn’t have a very good track record in dealing with people who don’t fit society’s perfect mould. it isn’t so long ago for example that homosexuals were committed to asylums, and ‘treated’ with barbaric electro convulsive therapy in the belief that they were mentally ill.The first recorded Brit to have a male to female sex change was april ashley (below, seen before as George Jamieson on the left), who travelled to Casablanca for the treatment in 1960. Whether the surgery was entirely satisfactory is unclear, but april achieved fame in the uK both as a model, and as a role model for other transgender people. With the rather surprising support of John Prescott she began to pave the way for change in the uK.

Despite that it wasn’t until 2004 that the countries Gender recognition act was passed, making it legal for the birth certificates and other documents of sex change

individuals to reflect their new status. until then they were unable to legally marry - a problem which april herself had encountered.other countries seem to have had a more liberal approach, with the first sex change procedure thought to have been carried out in Berlin in the very early 1930’s. The patient died from complications, but by 1952 surgeons in Denmark successfully operated on an american, George Jorgensen, who went on to live a happy life as Christine. Meanwhile the first such operation in the uK appears to remain a closely guarded secret, although april ashleys’ trip to Morocco, and her subsequent campaigning, could provide a clue that she was unable to have her sex change done at home.even now the process of gender change in the uK is long and arduous. With waiting lists, lengthy psychological assessments, and an overstretched national health Service, it can take up to 10 years in some cases before the goal is reached.Little wonder that Thailand attracts so many foreigners who can afford to pay for private treatment. Whether it is wise for some foreign patients to rush into the final decision without the psychological support they would receive back home is debatable, but Thailand has established itself as something of a centre of excellence in the field.rumour has it that the expertise of Thai surgeons developed from the need to re-attach so many penises which had been lopped off by the angry wives of unfaithful men. There is a ring of truth in that explanation, although there is also a very different attitude towards transgender than in the uK.Thailand’s ‘katoeys’ are accepted for what they are, whether they choose to remain somewhere mid gender, or eventually have a full sex change. There are always a few exceptions, but the typically delicate Thai features and build must help them to live in whatever way they feel comfortable. and if that includes entering the popular katoey beauty pageants then that too is not only accepted, but encouraged. it is difficult to write about some aspects of transgender without appearing to be prejudiced, which i am not. But it seems to me that those physical differences in appearance between Western and Thai can only help ease the way for Thai people undergoing sex transition.in the uK april ashley was an exception, and is still a beautiful and graceful woman. others, our newly wed double sex change couple included, never seem to quite look the part however hard they try, and however much they feel right in their true gender. Perhaps that is one reason for their long struggle for acceptance.

SATURDAY 5TH OCTOBER 2013PREMIER LEAGUEMan City v Everton 18:45With the form Everton have been showing, City should regard this as a crucial game to win, but it seems as though the departure of Moyes and Fellaini, and the shrewd buys made by Martinez have turned the Toffees from being the nearly men into genuine contenders. City have endured a mixed start and may well play a cautious game here, and we would not be surprised if this turns out to be a draw.

ManCheSTer, enGLanDFANS of Manchester United are delighted to be launching their first campaign to sack a manager in almost a quarter of a century.The thrill of seeing their new team below Hull City in the league table has seen success-jaded supporters revitalised by the chance to make Moyes Out banners.Fan Bill McKay said: “Over the years it feels like I’ve seen every club in the league run into the ground by comically incompetent managers while we sit on the sidelines waiting for our chance.“I have to admit, I’d given up even hoping.“But the buzz of seeing us outplayed by West Bromwich Albion in front of a wildly jeering crowd has made me think this could finally be our year. I can’t wait to tear up my season ticket.”26-year-old Joanna Kramer said: “For as long as I can recall, United have languished at the top of the table. But under Moyes, we’re within touching distance of a relegation

battle for the first time in decades. God, just imagine, next season our first away game could be with Yeovil Town.”Fans are desperately trying to find a word for abject failure that rhymes with ‘Moyes’ before results improve.United manager David Moyes said: “I was brought to this club to do a job, and the board have promised that I will be sacked once

our place as a second-tier club is absolutely assured.“But the fans have to be patient because that could be this season, next season or even the season after. These things take time.”Moyes added, “I had been trying for years to get Everton above United in the table, and it looks like my efforts are finally being rewarded.”
