HUA HIN, THAILAND It is a well known phenomenon that once a previously quiet place gets ‘discovered’ by outsiders and becomes a frequent tourist spot that the locals within time get jaded with their visitors, and also over time those visitors start to feel less welcome and encounter poor service and attitudes and even positive hostility. Whether it is the time of year, the weather, the financial climate or indeed the phenomenon described above, it is becoming evident that whatever honeymoon period existed between the locals of Hua Hin and it’s foreign visitors and residents is coming to an end. The expat forums are filled more than ever with stories of rip offs, poor service and general tales of woe, and many of the long term expats are calling it a day on Hua Hin (and Thailand). A common thread amongst expat comments is that it appears as though many Thais they encounter simply don’t care or have little consideration of the impact their actions have upon others, whether exhibited in relationships or more run of the mill matters like driving or business. However it is also the case that tourists and expats are becoming less careful in what they do or say when visiting foreign countries, as evidenced by the recent ‘naked on a mountain’ problem in Malaysia; in the past in Thailand locals would give the benefit of the doubt when cultural faux pas were committed but now there appears to be less tolerance to more frequent offences. Hua Hin will surely attract more and more visitors as the years go by, but it would be a good thing for both locals and visitors to show greater respect to each other than has been observed in recent times, for all our sakes. This week it is..... Go to potBecome ruined. When hippies took to smoking cannabis in the 1960/70s, one of the more common of the myriad terms for the drug was ‘pot’. The derivation of that term is disputed. it was stated in american Speech, as early as 1936, that the word derives from the Spanish word for marijuana - potiguaya. Others have questioned that, saying that there is no such word in Spanish. That aside, journalists of the day couldn’t resist the ‘gone to pot’ label; for example, this piece by John Brewer, in the California newspaper The independent, June 1970:

“I can get marijuana faster than I can get a text at the bookstore,” says a UCLA graduate student. College students, it seems, have gone to pot.

Of course, people had been going to pot long before then. That was in the sense of ‘going to (the) pot’, that is, being chopped up and boiled for food. That usage dates back at least as far as the 16th century; for example, in William Tindale’s an answere vnto Sir Thomas Mores

dialoge, 1530:

Then goeth a part of ye little flocke to pot, and the rest scatter.

The colloquial, metaphorical usage of ‘ruin; destruction’ is fairly old too and was in common use by the 17th century. Edmund hickeringill used the term in The history of Whiggism, 1682:

Poor Thorp, Lord Chief Justice, went to Pot, in plain English, he was Hang’d.

That meaning alludes to the fact that the journey of an animal or ingredient to the pot was a one-way trip, with a very short future ahead.

ShipWrECka man, a sheep and a sheepdog were washed up on a beach after a shipwreck. after looking around for a day or two, he realized that they were stranded on a desert island. after being there a few weeks, he got into the habit of taking his two animal companions to the beach every evening to watch the sunset. One particular evening, the sky was a fiery red with beautiful cirrus clouds, the breeze was warm and gentle - a perfect night for romance if he only had a woman. as they sat there, the sheep started looking better and better to the lonely man. Soon, he leaned over to the sheep and put his arm around it. The ever-protective sheepdog, growled fiercely until the man took his arm from around the sheep. after that, the three of them continued to enjoy the sunsets together, but there was no more cuddling. a few weeks passed-by and, lo and behold, there was another shipwreck. incredibly the only survivor was nicola Sturgeon. That evening, the man took nicola to the evening beach with the sheep and sheep dog. it was another beautiful evening - red sky cirrus clouds, a warm and gentle breeze - perfect for a night of romance. pretty soon, the man started to get those feelings again. he fought the urges as long as he could but he finally gave in and leaned over to nicola and told her he hadn’t had sex for months. nicola batted her eyelashes and asked if there was anything she could do for him? he said, ‘Yes of course there is. Can you take the dog for a walk?’

Do you like to cook?is cooking your hobby? is cooking a passion?

come and join us in our newHua Hin Hobby cooking Members group

The cooking sessions are once a month. Each member has a chance to host the group in their home and make dinner for them. There are no guidelines as far as what to cook, as long as the meal is homemade and they provide the recipes. Costs are shared and each member brings their

own drinks. My idea was to regularly gather people who have the same passion; cooking. As there are many nationalities it will be exciting to discover new food cultures and to share recipes. A cooking group is also a social event; cooking together is fun and is an opportunity to make new friends. You do not need to be a chef in order to join the group. Whatever your level of cooking is, most important is that you like cooking, are open to new ideas and are prepared to participate regularly at the members’ cooking sessions. If you are interested in receiving more information you

mags meanderings: from som tam to mushY Peas

aLL aBOarD!if you are an expat with a uk driving licence you might want to check out changes brought in by the DVLa this month. Those of you who still have the old paper licences shouldn’t be affected until you reach 70, when your licence will be due for renewal. For those who already have the photo card licence there are some things to watch out for. With effect from June 8th the paper counterpart to the photo card isn’t needed, and the DVLa is advising drivers to destroy it. unfortunately this is expected to cause some confusion for drivers who want to rent a car abroad - or more accurately cause confusion with the car hire companies, who will have to rely on the photo card licence and DVLa database to verify information needed before thay can let you loose with a rental car.Whether this change will affect Thai car hire companies is any ones guess. With luck it won’t. Or if you have a Thai driving licence anyway it might not matter at all. But the general feeling wherever you live is to ignore the DVLa dictat and keep that counterpart.and by the way, don’t forget that the photo card licence is only valid for 10 years.also on the theme of transport, if you despair of Thailands’ trains, avoid them altogether on the grounds of health, safety, and precarious timekeeping, or simply can’t face being in huaLamphong station, you might want to think again.at least in the Land of Smiles it is simplicity itself to buy a train ticket. You just rock up at the station, tell the nice smiley person behind the hatch where you want to go, and (very) roughly when. The nice smiley person will tap on their computer and show you the seating plan for your train of choice. he or she will give the prices for different classes of travel experience, ranging from very comfortable 1st class seats but please turn the aircon off or fetch me another blanket, through to squattie potties and just open the window. he will highlight the available seats, take your baht, and give you a single journey ticket.no faffing around with returns, peak travel supplements, or whether or not you possess a rail card. Ok, there may be times when you need to book in advance for a long distance trip involving a sleeper berth. Or perhaps if you plan to travel over any one of 17 or so bank holidays. But as a seasoned expat you are well aware of that and make allowances.Sadly the uk, considered to be a more advanced nation, and the place where railways were invented, really can’t compete with Thailand any more. There are so many privatised, franchised and competing rail operators, with a host of websites vying for your online bookings,

that the few remaining real people behind the few remaining hatches in station booking offices have lost the will to live.Or at least the one i encountered recently had. here is the gist of our encounter:

Me: ‘hello, i’ve heard that there’s an offer on Tuesdays during august for £19 kings Cross day returns?’

Man Behind hatch: ‘What day do you want to travel?’

M: ‘What days are available?’

MBh: ‘i don’t know, you need to give me a date first.’

M: (gets diary out) So we arE looking at Tuesdays only then?

MBh: ‘hmmph’

M: ‘Ok, how about the 4th?’

MBh: ‘no chance’

M: ‘The 11th?’

MBh: ‘Still too early. The tickets were released yesterday and are already nearly sold out’

M: ‘The 25th would be fine.’

MBh: ‘You won’t be able to travel peak times, it’ll be the 10.30 train.’

M: ‘Yes that’s good’

Man Behind hatch taps on his computer and announces ‘That will be £27’.

M: ‘But i thought it was a £19 special offer?’

MBh: ‘Only if you return the next day.’

i didn’t book. But hulls’ favourite politician, Lord Two Jags prescott, will no doubt be relying heavily on the hull to kings Cross service for the next 6 months, having been banned for speeding on the a15. Luckily he quite enjoys travelling by train, and can claim back the fares on expenses.

Hua Hin City Football Club is the local professional team for the area formed in 2011. They currently play their home matches at the Kai Tanarat Stadium in Pranburi, but a new stadium is currently under construction in Khao Takiab, and is expected to be completed within the next few months.

Chelsea may have to play their home matches away from Stamford Bridge for at least two seasons as part of plans to increase the stadium’s capacity to 60,000. (Guardian) Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri says it would be “difficult to say no” if a lucrative bid was received for midfielder Paul Pogba. The France international, 22, has been linked with Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City among others. (Gazzetta dello Sport via Independent) Manchester United have told Real Madrid they will not consider offers under £25m for 24-year-old Spain goalkeeper David De Gea. (Sun) Monaco want Chelsea to loan them midfielders Mario Pasalic, 20, and Charly Musonda, 18, as part of a deal that will see 29-year-old Colombia striker Radamel Falcao move on loan to Stamford Bridge. (Telegraph) Petr Cech’s goalkeeping coach at Chelsea believes the 33-year-old wants to sign for Arsenal. The Czech can move for free, with his contract set to expire. (Mirror) Liverpool will make an improved offer for Southampton’s England right-back Nathaniel Clyne. The Reds had a £10m bid for the 24-year-old rejected at the end of May. (Liverpool Echo) The agent of Roberto Firmino, the Hoffenheim and Brazil forward who has been linked with a move to Manchester United, has confirmed the 23-year-old is “moving to England”, but any deal will only be completed after the Copa America. (Bild via Manchester Evening News) United must meet a £35m release clause if they want to sign Valencia’s 27-year-old Argentina defender Nicolas Otamendi. The Old Trafford club had valued the player at closer to £25m. (Mirror)

Everton are close to completing a deal to bring Barcelona winger Gerard Deulofeu back to the club in a £3m transfer. The 21-year-old spent the 2013-14 season on loan at Goodison Park. (Star) Liverpool may sign Charlton’s 18-year-old defender Joe Gomez as a replacement for 24-year-old Uruguay centre-back Sebastian Coates, who is expected make his loan move to Sunderland permanent in a £4m transfer. (Guardian) Tottenham are close to completing the £3.5m signing of 24-year-old former England Under-21 defender Kieran Trippier from Burnley. Liverpool, Newcastle, West Ham, Bournemouth and Southampton also wanted the player. (Mail) Spurs are also interested in signing 23-year-old Egypt winger Mohamed Salah from Chelsea. (Evening Standard) Southampton have agreed a fee with Malaga for striker Juanmi, but the 22-year-old is still considering offers from other clubs across Europe. (Telegraph) Manchester City, who have been linked with Raheem Sterling, Paul Pogba and Kevin De Bruyne, will go ahead with their summer spending plans, despite fears of further sanctions under Uefa’s financial fair play rules. (Manchester Evening News) Manchester United are planning to offer £30m for Lazio’s Felipe Anderson, a 22-year-old Brazilian attacking midfielder. (Sun ) The Old Trafford club could sign Ajax keeper Jasper Cillessen, 26, as they line up a replacement for 24-year-old David De Gea, who has been linked with a move to Real Madrid. ukNewly appointed Newcastle United manager Steve McClaren has delighted fans by developing a Geordie accent during his first interview.McClaren faced the press just minutes after signing a three-year contract, and outlined his plans for the sleeping giant.Answering a question in his ambitions for next year, McClaren began in his York brogue, “This is a giant club, and we have to be looking at the top half and possible European qualification.”Before slipping into a Geordie accent to add, “It wud be canny tuh leed Newcassel intee europe, an’ give the fans somethin tuh celebrate.”“Wor numbor yen priority whey aye is tuh myek sure the toon divvin’ gan doon.”

Above: The question on most fans lips is how will McLaren deal with the notoriously bad weather on Tyneside? Will it be the iconic

brolly or will he opt for a plastic mac?

“But fair iv silverwear wud be class, an’ ah hope ah gan delivor that fo’ these class fans at sum point in the next few yeors.”Season ticket holders have welcomed McClaren’s appointment, though response to his new accent has been mixed.Simon Williams told us, “Look, if he can win us more games than the last few bosses, then he’ll be a hero, but if he could stop sounding like some sort of Geordie caricature that’d be great.”“That said, if he gets fired at Christmas and finds himself applying for a job at Plymouth, that’s an interview I’d love to hear.”
