hua hin, ThaiLanDThe decision announced this week by the investigative journalist andrew Drummond to leave Thailand after 25 years of mainly reporting on and exposing the activities of foreign criminals in Thailand has been greeted by most with an understanding of his reasons but also despairing that he has needed to do so.in a statement issued on his website, andrew-drummond.com, he said: “i have enjoyed my time in Thailand where i have made many good Thai and foreign friends but there comes a time having too much knowledge which i cannot keep to myself can be too dangerous. My well being has been threatened as have those of my children. This is not of course the first time, but the recent threat came from a group of people who have killed with impunity before, and have even had police set up people on false charges.” The statement goes on to detail his concerns with how the Thai legal system has been used by criminals to attempt to silence him and others, highlighting the fact that even in the most spurious of cases that these criminals do not get ordered to pay costs when defeated, and added, “Thailand’s inability to take criticism, and its greatly flawed justice system, are major handicaps to its progress.”Drummond intends to continue his pursuit of the truth from outside Thailand, and his final sentence should perhaps ring warning bells for some: “i have worked as a journalist for over twenty years in Britain, the united States and australia without being sued once. in many ways foreign criminals will be seen to have won this battle. They have not won the war.”hua hin has featured many times in stories investigated by Mr Drummond, mostly concerning foreign real estate developers, although his focus mainly fell on Pattaya; ultimately though he must put his family’s safety first, and aWOL wishes him well.

This week it is..... Moot pointan irrelevant argument.Some may disagree with the above meaning and argue that it means ‘a point open to debate’, rather than ‘a point not worth debating’. That former meaning was certainly the correct one when the term was first coined, but that’s going back a while.Laurence humphrey, the president of Magdalen College, Oxford, wrote nobles or of nobilitye, a manual of behaviour for the english nobility, in 1563. in that he wrote:“That they be not forced to sue the lawe, wrapped with so infinite crickes and moot poyntes.”in medieval england, moots, or meets, were assemblies or councils where points of government were debated. The country was split into juridicial areas called hundreds and administered via assemblies known as hundredmotes. The form of government has long since vanished but the term hundred is still in use as the name of the procedural device which gives consent to MPs’ resignation. British MPs aren’t allowed to resign and, when members wish to leave Parliament they may do so

PreGnanT PauSeWomens’ things this week, but please don’t let that put you guys off - it might still be interesting!it was reported earlier this month that scientists have developed a postage stamp sized electronic chip which, when implanted under the skin, releases a daily dose of contraceptive.Contraceptive implants are of course nothing new, and have enjoyed a great deal of popularity in Thailand. But in their early days they caused a lot of problems with periods. even now they are clearly visible as a bump under the skin, often on the upper arm, and they need to be replaced at least every 5 years, and removed if the woman decides it is time for a baby. The new electronic widget, it is claimed, will last for up to 16 years, and can be remotely switched on and off as needed.Looking back it really doesn’t seem so long since the advent of the oral contraceptive pill, which itself only became widely available in 1961, five years before development of the implant began. But for women living in remote rural areas then the pill wouldn’t have been the most convenient of birth control methods, and in the mid 20th century Thailand had one of the most rapid rates of population growth in the world.Fortunately an american named edwin McDaniel was around to develop one of the first - and biggest - family planning outreach programmes in the world. edwin was born in 1917, the son of medical missionaries in what was then Siam, and there he spent much of his childhood, in nakorn Sri Tamarat, where his parents ran a centre for sufferers of leprosy.in 1948, following medical training back in the States, and his army Medical Corp service, edwin returned to Thailand to follow in his parents footsteps. he became director of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the McCormick hospital in Chiang Mai where, in the early 1960s, he set up the outreach family planning service

destined to become world famous. his programme also drew international acclaim for promoting the wide spread use of the injectable contraceptive - forerunner of the implant - and much better suited to rural communities than the pill.Dr edwin McDaniel died in March 1999, and is buried in the Chiang Mai Foreign Cemetery. During his lifes work he saw Thailands’ population growth rate reduce to one of the lowest in the world. his son Phillip became the third generation of McDaniel medical missionaries to the Land of Smiles.in honour of Burns night, this weeks word is one used by the Bard himself - ‘shangan’ - a cleft stick used to cause mischief or scare away a dog by pulling it’s tail.
