HUA HIN, THAILAND The horrific accident that took place on the Cha Am to Pranburi bypass on Sunday afternoon has highlighted once again how dangerous the roads in Thailand can be. A minibus carrying tourists from Hong Kong ploughed into a tree in the central reservation, killing the Thai driver and three of the tourists, with three others injured, including a child Reports from the scene are suggesting that the accident was caused when the trailer truck that the minibus was behind attempted to pull over quickly when a policeman instructed him to, causing the minibus to swerve to avoid a collision before losing control and hitting the tree. The impact was so great that the tree was uprooted. Rescue workers needed cutting tools to free the injured and retrieve the bodies from the overturned vehicle, an operation that took an hour, before the injured were taken to Cha Am Hospital, and then transferred to Phra Chom Klao Hospital in Phetchaburi. Road accidents in Thailand involving minibuses are so common and so unsurprising, given how many of them are driven, that we rarely report on them, but in this instance it does seem to be more than a case of driving too fast or other driver error, with the strong possibility that the practice by some highway police of leaping in front of speeding vehicles at short notice has directly led to this tragic accident. In a study last year by the Transportation Research Institute of the University of Michigan, USA, Thailand ranked second to Namibia as the country with the highest rate of fatalities from road crashes. The latter registered 45 fatalities from road crashes per 100,000 population, while Thailand registered 44. The global average is 18. GET RACING FROM ONLY 400 BAHT! This week it is..... Call a spade a spadeTo speak plainly - to describe something as it really is.it might be thought that this derives from the derogatory use of the slang term ‘spade’, meaning negro, an american term originating in the 20th century. That view of it as derogatory might also be thought to be supported by this piece from John Trapp’s Mellificium theologicum, or the marrow of many good authors, 1647:

“Gods people shall not spare to call a spade a spade, a niggard a niggard.”

Trapp’s use of ‘niggard’ is difficult to interpret. The word had several meanings in the 17th century. it could be used to mean ‘miser’, which is the more common usage today, or as a general term of abuse - ‘lout’, ‘barbarian’ etc. The word was also used as the name of firebricks in grates. The co-incidence in form and pronuctiation of ‘niggard’ and ‘nigger’ causes some confusion. although the two words probably derived independently, they doubtless affected each other’s development of meaning over time.

Whatever Trapp’s intention was, we can be confident that he didn’t mean ‘nigger’ or ‘negro’.an earlier expression of the notion, albeit in different form to that which we now use, comes from nicolas udall’s ‘apophthegmes, that is to saie, prompte saiynges. First gathered by Erasmus’ - translated in 1542:

“Philippus aunswered, that the Macedonians wer feloes of no fyne witte in their termes but altogether grosse, clubbyshe, and rusticall, as they whiche had not the witte to calle a spade by any other name then a spade.”This refers back to Plutarch’s apophthegmata. The eccentric right-wing British Tory politician Sir Gerald nabarro was fond of emphasizing his direct ‘man of the people’ image by saying ‘i call a spade a shovel’. in fact, despite being from an immigrant family himself, nabarro loudly supported the repatriation of Caribbean immigrants to the uK. how he referred in private to the people who would have undoubtedly have been called ‘spades’ in nabarro’s social circle isn’t recorded.

Do you like to cook?is cooking your hobby? is cooking a passion?

come and join us in our newHua Hin Hobby cooking Members group

The cooking sessions are once a month. Each member has a chance to host the group in their home and make dinner for them. There are no guidelines as far as what to cook, as long as the meal is homemade and they provide the recipes. Costs are shared and each member brings their

own drinks. My idea was to regularly gather people who have the same passion; cooking. As there are many nationalities it will be exciting to discover new food cultures and to share recipes. A cooking group is also a social event; cooking together is fun and is an opportunity to make new friends. You do not need to be a chef in order to join the group. Whatever your level of cooking is, most important is that you like cooking, are open to new ideas and are prepared to participate regularly at the members’ cooking sessions. If you are interested in receiving more information you

in ThE FaMiLy WayFirst there was the turkey baster, then came in vitro fertilisation.iVF, as it is now commonly known was developed over 30 years ago, with the aim of helping women who were unable to conceive naturally due to damaged fallopian tubes.all well and good. Most women would probably try anything to bear a child of their own, before facing the choice of either giving up on motherhood or adopting. But is iVF being abused? hardly a week goes by now without a new story emerging which shows that families don’t always live happily ever after iVF. neither of course do families who have their children in the traditional way, but at least those children grow up reasonably secure in the knowledge that the names on their birth certificates relate to the Mum and Dad who brought them up. With iVF proof of parentage can be a minefield.Just two very recent cases in the uK demonstrate what can happen. one, a divorced man who thought he had been paying child maintenance for his son, who had been conceived by iVF, discovered that his ex wife had actually used a previous boyfriend as the sperm donor. The man sought to reclaim his maintenance payments, alleging that his ex had deliberately misled him to believe the child was his. a judge dismissed the case. Probably quite wisely, because let’s face it, how many other men have unknowingly brought up a child as their own without ever knowing the truth? The other recent case involves the far more complex situation of a child born to one of a lesbian couple, using donor sperm from a gay man who was living with his male partner at the time. The childs’ biological mother was subsequently sectioned under the Mental health act - and the child left in the care of her female partner - also with psychiatric issues - who then takes a new partner who is actually a woman undergoing gender re-assignment. (Who also happens to have psychiatric problems - no surprise there.) Even Eastenders would struggle with a storyline like that.Extreme perhaps, and of course there is nothing to stop a same sex couple having a child. nor is there anything unusual about a parent having mental health problems. But in either of these cases did anyone consider the wellbeing of the children?i have nothing against same sex couples, or even same sex marriage, and understand that gay men and women are perfectly capable of wanting, and caring for, their own children just as much and as well as heterosexual couples can. But deep down there is something quite disturbing about the use of donors, surrogates and iVF to achieve that aim. Especially when those children appear to be produced like trophies, or to make a

statement, simply because they can.Let’s go back 15 years or so and take a look at Britains’ first gay couple iVF family. in this case the two men first had twins, now aged 15, created from the donor eggs of one woman, each of which was fertilised by one of the men, and implanted into another woman. But if that weren’t enough, one of the fertilised eggs first split into two and one of those parts was frozen, to be implanted four years later into yet another woman, who produced an identical twin to one of the first set of non-identical - and in fact only half biological - twins. The two Dads also produced a second (or should that be third?) set of twins using a new donor, sperm from each of them again, but the same original surrogate mother. Confused? The family now consists of two Dads, two sets of non identical twins, and one child born singly who is the identical twin of one of the first set, but four years younger. all with the help of two donors and two surrogate mothers. a kind of genetic pick ‘n mix. This particular family is very rich indeed. The two fathers could clearly afford iVF, could pay whatever it took to obtain suitable donors and surrogates, and could shield the children from undue media attention. until that is the two eldest decided to spill the beans. Perhaps they are beginning to realise that they can’t live their lives in a luxurious cocoon, and are trying to test the reaction of the outside world to what in effect looks very much like an experiment enabled only by science and their parents’ wealth. There are of course other situations in which iVF is used to satisfy the needs of women who are well past their natural child bearing years, or who have used sperm from their now dead husbands to produce the child they had longed for while he was alive. natural maternal instinct? or selfish disregard for the resulting children.you may argue that as long as children are wanted it doesn’t matter. That it is far better than seeing children who are unloved and abandoned. and hopefully you would be right. But the fact remains that until those children conceived by iVF for reasons other than what it was originally intended for have fully matured, no-one can know what effects it could have on their lives.

Word of the week is ‘cark’. a worry, burden or concern. if you are carked you might be troubled about the exchange rate, or simply worried that Tesco Lotus will run out of hP sauce.

uKFormer England Captain Sol Campbell has announced his intention to lose the 2016 London Mayoral Election on penalties, we can report. With Boris Johnson set to step down as mayor at the next election, Campbell hopes to organise a stirring run for the job before being defeated in a heartbreaking last-minute decider.Campbell has insisted that his experience as Captain of England at international level was the ideal experience to prepare him for taking part in, and then losing a major competition. His team are reported to be ‘optimistic’ that Campbell can at least see off weak first-round challenge from George Galloway before crashing out.“I’m going to get everyone behind me and really try 110% to get the best job in English politics,” Sol told reporters

“I intend to start well, to find myself being talked up by the tabloids, before getting the yips about three-quarters of the way through and completely blowing it.”On past experience it is expected that the eventual winner of the Mayoral Election will be German.Mayor Boris Johnson has backed Campbell’s run for the title, declaring it “Utterly spiffing”.“Crikey, Sol would gosh-darned well make the tippest-toppest mayor London has seen since, well, myself”, he said.“Back of the net”, he added.“Or not, as the case may be.”
