DELFT – As the faculty is shifting, transfor-ming and slimming down, B Nieuws has followed suit. Not just the graphics and format have changed, but also the content. With a team comprised of the B Nieuws board, the editorial advice board, our M&C colleagues and the dean, brainstorm sessions were held to determine the new look and feel of the faculty periodical. The common consensus was that B Nieuws should move away from the mostly in-depth magazine format and offer more news items with an accent on current events and shorter news items.

What is typical of our time? Downsizing. Budget cuts have effected us too. Only a year ago, the editorial board was slimmed down from five people to four. Now, all costs had to be reconsidered - and with it, our profile.

What became apparant in the old format is that there was a lot of emphasis on back-ground and in-depth content, while actuality remained a side note. In light of the overwhel-ming amount of activities going on at BK, there is more demand for news and current events. So we’ve changed the way we write articles: more short pieces with a current theme. This is also reflected in the smaller tabloid format. Of course, opinion and in-depth

articles are still being included: in the middle spread there is plenty of room for background stories, interviews and what not, while Forum remains the place where you can vent your opinion.

Along with the new writing style, graphic design firm Twin Media cooked up a comple-tely new look for B Nieuws. Sharp is probably the right word to describe it, just as sharp as our items – we hope you like it as much as we do!

We’re also punching up the frequency: instead of every month, we will be coming out every 3 weeks. This reflects the current character of the new content.

We are happy to present the first new edition of B Nieuws in 2010. We hope that you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed making it!Happy reading!

BK SlimWe blijven! Zoveel is inmiddels

wel duidelijk. Geld voor een volledig nieuw gebouw is er dus niet. Maar is de vraag naar een nieuw gebouw nog wel relevant? Wat is nu eigenlijk nog een ‘nieuw gebouw’? Ons huidige gebouw is volledig vernieuwd, is er dan geen sprake van een nieuw gebouw?

Iedereen die op bezoek komt in BK City is onder de indruk van de sfeer, de ruimte, de inrichting en de inspiratie die zij opdoen als zij door de gangen van ons prachtige gebouw lopen. Oud BK-studenten vertellen me dat ze in dit gebouw met liefde opnieuw zouden willen gaan studeren. Daar waar massaliteit normaliter als anoniem en beklemmend wordt ervaren, werkt het in BK City juist aangenaam en verkwikkend: je voelt je hier net als in een grote stad aangenaam vrij, maar toch deel van het grotere geheel. Daarom hebben wij dit gebouw dan ook BK City genoemd.

Het gebouw is dus verNIEUWd. Maar er is meer! we zijn nog lang niet klaar met ons BK City. De 25 miljoen euro die minister Plasterk ons heeft toegezegd – en die nu onder druk staat - hebben we nog steeds heel hard nodig. Installa-ties, techniek en glas zijn namelijk niet ingericht op langdurig en duurzaam gebruik. Oorspronkelijk zouden we het gebouw slechts 5 jaar gebruiken, maar nu wordt dat langer: misschien wel 20 à 30 jaar. Daarom werken we aan nieuwe plannen om BK City duurzaam te maken. Het gaat hierbij nadruk-kelijk om meer dan energiebespa-ring en het aanbrengen van isolatie alleen. Het gaat hier ook om materiaalgebruik, afvalstro-men en mogelijke uitbreiding van het gebouw, waarbij het hogere doel de optimalisering van de leefbaarheid van BK City voor onze studenten en medewerkers is. Als Faculteit Bouwkunde zijn wij het aan ‘onze stand’ verplicht om dit alles op een voorbeeldige manier te doen. We bliezen een oud gebouw al nieuw leven in en laten nu ook nog eens zien dat dit duurzaam kan.

Een gebouw heeft 100 levens, dat laat BK City nu al zien. Nu maken we van het gebouw nog een duurzaam monument: BK City SLIM.

ROTTERDAM – Onder de achttien genomineerden bevonden zich drie Delftenaren: Levi Lanser met het project ‘Halleluja Amsterdam’, Erik van Beekum met ‘Stadshart’ en Sander Krul met zijn project ‘From Glass City to Hybrid Landscape’.

Alle genomineerden hadden een filmpje van ongeveer zes minuten opgenomen om hun ontwerp te presenteren. Om tot een winnaar te komen had een eerste ‘Club van 50’, met onder andere Sjoerd Soeters, Frits Palmboom, Nathalie de Vries en Robert Winkel, deze longlist van 18 tot een top drie teruggebracht. Uit deze top drie koos een ‘Club van 5’ de uiteinde-lijke winnaar.

der Pol en debatleider Rogier van den Berg over de positie van (de opleidingen van) stedenbouw in Nederland. De spanning werd tot het laatste moment hoog gehou-den. Per debat werden enkele genomineerden van het projectie-scherm ‘weggeklikt’ totdat uiteindelijk de winnaar overbleef: Jan Maas met het project ‘Urban Wrinkle’. De aan de Academie van Bouwkunst Amsterdam afgestu-deerde Maas ontwierp voor de Zuidas een glooiend park met

daaronder een nieuw station Zuid-RAI. Henk Ovink reikte namens Minister Jaqueline Cramer van VROM de prijs uit: een wisselbokaal en een steden-bouwkundige opdracht ter waarde van € 20.000,- in het kader van het innovatieprogramma ‘Mooi Nederland’, een initiatief van het ministerie van VROM.

Het is de bedoeling dat de StedenbouwNU prijs jaarlijks uitgereikt gaat worden. De prijs is opgezet en georganiseerd door de stichting StedenbouwNU, een nieuw platform ter bevordering van het stedenbouwkundig debat. Een installatie waarin de filmpjes te zien zijn, zal het hele jaar door Nederland reizen (MS).

DELFT - The faculty is in a state of flux. Budget cuts with the resulting decrease in scientific staff, a smaller faculty building and increase in student numbers have led to heavy criticism in recent months. In order to objectively evaluate the situation, data is necessary. In an effort to stimulate students to take part in surveys and panel discussions, Mr. van Rongen and colleague Mirjam Albertz from the Archi-tecture Faculty Quality Assurance Team recently organized a presentation for student repre-sentatives to illustrate how the course evaluations work. Ms. Albertz says: “We hope by bringing this to the attention of

the faculty that the number of respondents increases. The data that is collected is used when evaluating courses, staff perform-ance and the structure of the semesters. This is the best way for students to voice their opinion concerning their studies”. The internet surveys provide raw data while the discussion panels, consisting of students participat-ing in the course being evaluated, offer a broader perspective. She adds, “The faculty and the curriculum are changing at a fast pace and the more input the better”. Mr. van Rongen points out how the results can be quite useful. “There are a number of advantages of having a course

Students can prepare themselves better, know what to expect from a course and also know what is being im-proved.” However, the team has discovered that many students and staffers don’t know where to find information and provide feedback. Mr. van Rongen: “We recommended as a point of improvement from the course evaluations that teachers and coordinators include a general email address and website information in the study guide and semester booklets.” (AG)

Op dinsdag 15 december en donderdag 11 februari waren alle student-assistenten uitgenodigd om te debatteren met Wytze Patijn en onderwijsdirecteur Krik van Ees. Constructieve debatten die, als het aan de organisatoren ligt, snel een vervolg gaan krijgen. “We willen op 23 maart een groot open onderwijsdebat organiseren”, aldus Peter Oosterbaan, commissaris Onder-wijs van het Stylosbestuur. “We nodigden voor de eerste twee debatten alleen student-assisten-ten uit, omdat we in kleinschalige groepen wilden debatteren, met betrokken studenten waarvan we zeker weten dat ze een mening hebben. Het volgende debat voor alle studenten moet een megaklapper worden.”

Tijdens de twee debatten werden een aantal onderwijsgerelateerde zaken aan de kaak gesteld. Het eerste debat behandelde de naderende onderwijshervormin-gen: seriematig onderwijs (meer studenten per docent, onderwijs via centrale colleges, numerus fixus), het grote aantal eerstejaars en daarmee samenhangend de ruimte in het gebouw. Het tweede debat concentreerde zich op één element uit het vorige debat en ging hier verder op in: het wetenschappelijk karakter van Bouwkunde, ofwel de vraag: academie of universiteit?

Uit de debatten kunnen twee conclusies worden getrokken. De kritiek in het eerste debat richtte zich voornamelijk op het gebrek aan een overkoepelende visie op de toekomst van het onderwijs. Zonder een dergelijke visie zijn budgettaire en andere maatrege-len (denk aan wel of geen een numerus fixus) moeilijk te 'verkopen'. Wat het wetenschap-pelijk karakter van de opleiding betreft: vrijwel iedereen was het erover eens dat wetenschap een stevigere positie in het ouderwijs zou moeten krijgen. Studenten beseffen dan beter dat Bouwkun-de een wetenschappelijke opleiding is.

Er wordt zeker ook iets gedaan met deze kritiek. Van Ees: “De Bachelor eindwerkstukken worden nu beter op hun weten-schappelijke karakter beoordeeld, ook door docenten TBM. Verder is er in het nieuwe curriculum meer aandacht voor wetenschapsleer.” Patijn: “we organiseren binnen-kort een seminar over ontwerpdi-dactiek, waarin deze kritiek zal worden meegenomen.” Helaas konden Patijn en Van Ees de aanwezigen over de invulling van dit seminar niet veel meer vertellen.

Het lijkt er dus op dat het centrale debat op Bouwkunde eindelijk weer op gang komt. Of dat komt door de afgelopen en komende bezuinigingsrondes is niet zozeer relevant. Belangrijker is dat opinie nu eindelijk de wandelgangen ontstijgt. En misschien nog wel het belangrijkst: ook het zwaar bekritiseerde ‘management’ debatteert mee. (MS)

eindelijk weer debat op bouwkundenajaar 2009 was er flinke opschudding op de facul-teit. bezuinigingen, een posteractie van bk action group, rumoer op de wandelgangen. daarom organiseerden stylos, de fsr en het mt studentlid twee debatten over de kwaliteit en het profiel van het onderwijs op bouwkunde.

Woningcorporaties zijn bedrijven die werken in een complexe omgeving en bovendien een zeer complexe doelgroep bedienen. Het betreft maatschappelijke organi-saties die zich bezighouden met ‘de brede zin van het wonen’: dat wil zeggen dat zij niet enkel bezig zijn met bouwen en beheren, maar met een algehele verhoging van de leefbaarheid in de woonomgeving. Bijvoorbeeld door hierin ook de zorg, welzijn en onderwijsvoorziening te betrekken. In de jaren '90 zijn woningcorporaties veranderd van overheidsgestuurde, taakgerichte organisaties in zelfstandige ondernemingen met een publieke taakstelling. Door de bijzondere positie van corporaties - als speler tussen overheid, markt en maatschappij - richt de discussie binnen en over de corporatiesector zich voornamelijk op de verhouding tussen deze corporaties en de overheid. Het interne beleid van de verschillende maatschappelijke corporaties die Nederland rijk is, verdwijnt in deze discus-sie veelvuldig naar de achtergrond, terwijl deze zo mogelijk van veel grotere invloed is op de resultaten die de woning-corporaties behalen.

Een relatief klein aantal woningcorporaties beheert miljarden euro’s. Maatschappelijk geld dat op een verant-woordelijke wijze besteed dient te worden aan de volks-huisvesting van Nederland. Hoe deze corporaties en hun interne beleid zich sinds de privatisering hebben ontwik-keld is van grote invloed op het volkshuisvestingsbeleid van ons land. Een brede discussie over de organisatie van de corporaties, welke zich voornamelijk op de toekomst richt, lijkt dan ook broodnodig.

De onderzoeksgroep MOVe van de TU Delft, Praktijkvereni-ging Forum voor Volkshuisvesting en het Maatschappelijk Forum Wonen organiseren daarom een studiedag die zich vooral richt op de organisatie van de maatschappelijk ondernemende woningcorporaties.

Op deze studiedag speelt de rolinvulling van de corpora-ties, de wijze waarop ze daarbij vormgeven aan hun maatschappelijke inbedding en hun eigen organisatie hierop afstemmen een centrale rol. (MK)

Due to the imprecision of these computations the classification is generally done after the design is ready, i.e. they are not suitable to guide the design process. In my current research I am developing a computational system that is able to grade sustainability of designs with enhanced precision, so that it can be used during the design to generate solutions with maximal sustainability and low cost at the same time. The current research is an expansion of the Intelligent Design Objects (IDO) approach, so that it includes the issue of sustainability in it, beyond perception and functiona-lity concerns.”

evolutionary computation, neuro-fuzzy systems, computational intelligence... terms not generally associated with architectural design. that perception may change thanks to a com-putational system developed by dr. michael s. bittermann to aid in design called intelligent design objects (ido), for which he earned a phd with honours in 2009. bittermann has recently been awarded a tu delft fellowship and will be continuing his research at the chair of design informatics with the accent on sustainability in the built environment.

michael s. bittermann is an architect. he was born on july 21st, 1976 in würzburg, germany, into a family of builders. next to his academic work, bittermann designed a number of passive houses that were built in germany and did internships at 1100 architect (ny, usa) and at onl (rotter-dam). he studied architecture from 1997 - 2003 graduating cum laude as an msc in architecture from tu delft where he also worked as a student tutor at the hyper-body research group. in oct. 2009 he was conferred with a phd cum laude by the tu delft for his thesis entitled ‘intelli-gent design objects’ at the chair of design informatics (to&i). he is currently working at the chair of design infor-matics at the department of building technology.

after a successful completion of his PhD work on Intelligent Design Objects (IDO) at the Chair of Design Informatics (TO&I) in October of 2009, bittermann, wishing to continue his research, applied for a TU Delft Fellowship. The programme is set up to encourage promising young researchers in their scientific field. The competition was stiff, as the number of fellowship grants awarded by the university’s Executive board is limited to four and researchers from all scientific disciplines that fall under the TU umbrella are eligible to apply. The fellowships are awarded to young TU doctors who the jury believe will go on to significantly contri-bute to their scientific field in the netherlands.

The jury, comprised of renowned TU Delft professors and chaired by the Rector Magnificus, were impressed by the ‘innovative and ground-breaking’ character of bittermann’s proposal and especially appreciated the fact that it uses cutting edge computa-tional methods, namely computa-tional intelligence, to deal with a current societal issue, that of sustainability of the built environ-ment. The list of potential candidates applying for the a coveted fellowship represents a cross-section of young TU Delft scientists in a variety of basic and applied scientific fields. bitter-mann adds: “On a personal note, the Faculty of architecture is sometimes considered by the other TU Delft members to be inferior, in particular regarding the scientific novelty of its

research. The fact that our faculty received the fellowship grant indi-cates that this is not generally true.”

Concerning his plans for the coming two years, bittermann elaborates: “My current research topic is using intelligent computa-tion to improve sustainability of the built environment. sustainabi-lity is a complex attribute including diverse aspects such as energy use, comfort, functionality and form related aspects. Due to this complexity, advanced computational methods are needed to decide with confidence which solution matches a certain sustainability ambition. Currently, the best practice in the building industry is using rating systems like the LEED standard, that are based on ad-hoc computations to grade a building’s ‘sustainability’.

Wouter Vanstiphout graduated in 1991 in Art and Architectural History and Archaeology at the University of Groningen. He is currently a member of the research collective Crimson Architectural Historians (www.crimsonweb.org), which he founded in 1994 together with Michelle Provoost.

Over the years Crimson has produced books and exhibi-tions and its partners have also worked as developers, planners and managers.

Vanstiphout is also a guest lecturer at various educational institutes at home and abroad and is Professor of Architec-tural and Urban Design at the Technische Universität Berlin.

For the Akademie der Bildende Künste in Vienna he developed the new History and Theory of Architecture curriculum, which focuses on the social embed-ding of architecture and urban development. As a brand new Professor of Politics and Design, he will again focus on this social embedding of architecture and urban devel-opment, but with the emphasis on the political aspect.

On the ninth of June 2010 Wouter Vanstiphout will hold his inaugural speech.

What is the goal of the design as politics chair? the govern-ment realized that they needed to gain more in-depth knowledge on planning. there is a feeling that planning has become divorced from its original reasons for existence: attacking social and economic issues that are manifes-ted spatially through the design of the use of space. planning has become a self-perpetuating bureaucracy and is becoming increasingly more complex and steadily less relevant to the needs of society. Government needs to gather more knowledge about the way issues manifest themselves spatially, and which tools plan-ning should develop in order to be able to escape from the ‘perfor-mance crisis’ that planning is currently experiencing.

so architects and urban planners will rescue politics from this crisis? the crisis is also due to the discipline of architecture and urban planning. the designers aren’t capable of identifying the real relevant questions of today’s society and as a continuation of that, they just don’t know how to react to current society in a suitable way. Still, they have the ambition – or the pretension – that they are absolutely needed, which to me can only mean one thing: that they should also radically renew their way of working in order to reunite with politics.

And the Chair of design and Politics will reunite them? -smiles- In the first place, I don’t believe in a clear divide between Design and politics. this would reduce politics to people that are currently involved with politics, i.e. politicians, and design to, well, designers. and you could say, politics is way too important to leave it up to the politicians, just as design is too important to just leave to designers. What I find much more interesting is what the political dimension of design can be. that is why the chair is called ‘Design as politics’ instead of ‘Design and politics’, stating that design is politics, whether you like it or not. almost everything an architect or urban planner produces, or builds, even on a very small scale, has it’s influence on public space. It influences society, and is there-fore political.

in other words, architecture and politics have a lot in common? yes, as an architect you almost always build in the name of others: developers, individuals, governments, etc. Designing means making choices, and choosing the one automati-cally implies that you don’t choose the other. architecture is a profession that often bases itself on a certain ideology, and it likes to see itself as a profession that you practice out of a calling, an ambition to reform society. If you look at it this way the similarities become very clear. Of course there are architects who do not

work based on a higher calling, but these are almost without exception cynical and mediocre.

is this something that stu-dents aren’t aware of, the political aspect of design? I’m afraid so. real life often isn’t about ideology, but about making tactical compromises and choos-ing smart alternatives which will finally make it possible to realize a project. that’s why I don’t believe in designing utopian models for cities, which are pure and righteous. I feel the confron-tation with society can result in a much more innovative and powerful architecture, than the theoretical exercise of designing future cities. I believe that architecture and urban planning should have street credibility, which means a sense of idealism combined with a real knowledge of how the world actually works and the will to get your hands dirty.

An architecture that helps society progress? yes, but architecture should watch out for the risk of becoming a producer of politically correct icons. there are already too many architectural Bono’s, flying around the world and speaking of how architecture can save the world, and some-times dropping a meaningless little building for the magazines. therefore I would rather not just walk the path of optimism, but also try and stare into the abyss and confront architecture and planning with its dark side, with

society move forward. architec-ture and planning should under-stand that its relevance lies not in the perfect execution of its schemes, but in the way society is able to gain from them.

Aren’t politics also to blame for this misunderstanding? yes, of course. Because they don’t use architecture and urban planning as a tool to really achieve some-thing, but just as a symbol. architecture is often just reduced to a political symbol which is not a favorable position at all. yes, it implies that you can become a star architect, but also a power-less star architect. the more glamorized, the less power. On the other hand, the architects blind arrogance, his or her sometimes ridiculous idealism, is exactly what makes this profes-sion so fascinating, so beautiful to be involved with. paradoxically, I would never want architects to be perfectly sensible strategists. that would make them boring and irrelevant. their relevance for society lies exactly in their courage and their recklessness. I just don’t want them to lock them-selves in an ivory tower of futurism and star-architecture.

What do you want students to do with this? an open, honest, self-aware and conscious discus-sion about what they actually want to achieve with their profession as architect or urban planner. the beauty of architec-ture is the breadth it offers. I don’t want to push a student in a certain direction but if a student tells me ‘I will change the world’ than I expect an explanation, why and how he or she will do this. I expect students to become aware of their position and the choices they can make. I hope students will leave this university remain-ing students for life.

By graduating and being aware of the contradictions intrinsic in their profession? yes, being aware of the schizophrenic position between the technical engineer, the mad professor and the artist. the underestimation of this ambiguous position seems to be embedded in the Dna of architects and is at the same time inseparably linked to why architecture is such a great, romantic and important profes-sion.

its failures and the effects of its overblown ambitions and sometimes stunning naïveté.

One of the courses we will offer is a series of lectures I will present, which will be called ‘Blame the Architect’. In this series we will look at the connection between urban violence and urban planning. the inspiration was the debate following the riots in the French high-rise suburbs in the fall of 2005, with politicians and journalists claiming that it was the alienating and scaleless space of modernist urbanism that caused the troubles, and architects denying all responsi-bility and blaming society for everything. We will look at the relationship between riots and urban planning in american inner cities from the sixties to the current day, each time investigating the way that architects dealt with the political debates surrounding their plans and projects.

Can you state an example? toulouse Le Mirail. a satellite town outside the French city of toulouse, which was designed by Candilis & Woods. It is actually the biggest project built with team 10 ideologies in mind: gigantic building blocks placed in an organic pattern, with decks where social interaction would take place. the result you see now is one big ghetto that people want to escape from. and you actually

is not limited to the modernist architects, also the traditionalist architects and designers assume that building cities as in the eighteenth century would automatically mean cancelling out the problems of the 21st century city.

With your lecture series, you want to discuss the mistakes made in the past. is that something we miss as architec-ture students? If you examine what students learn about architectural history, it’s always about success stories. For me, as a historian, that’s very strange. We have always found failures much more interesting stories to learn from. analyzing processes which led to total failures can generate much more valuable knowledge than just admiring the successes.

do architects tend to empha-size only looking forward? Well, architects do look at the past, but then make another big mistake in thinking that in the future they will get everything right and a perfect design will be the result. But that will never happen! you often see that the success of a plan or project is judged based on the question whether or not the plan, as it was drawn up, is executed in the right way. that’s a mistake, because judging the success of a plan based on how well it's executed can’t be the final goal. planning and designing are actually just tools to achieve the real goal, which is helping

can blame the architects, because society really changed when the projects were realized. Still, here in Delft, Candillis & Woods and team 10 in general are still being treated as a heroic, humanist and friendly intellectual contribution to urban planning. I seriously doubt if the team 10 scholars in this school have ever made the effort to actually go and look at the state of the results of their heroes’ work.

is designing out of an ideology per definition a mistake? Designing with a certain ideology in mind isn’t the problem, rather the conversion of that ideology into reality. the biggest mistake architects and urban planners make is, in my opinion, creating a disconnect between physical form and ideological points of depar-ture. If you look back carefully at the planning of toulouse Le Mirail, you see the blindness which was perpetrated by the architects themselves in the form of the beautiful and convincing stories they told about the organic city as well as the drawings that precisely represented the beauty of that idea. If you convert these graphic shapes which are drawn on paper with a certain idea and content in mind, into reality, into a physical shape, it doesn’t imply that the ideals will also be converted into reality. I believe that this error in reasoning on the part of architects and urban planners is embedded in the Dna of the profession. It isn’t an error that can be solved just like that. It

After the recent changes at the ketelhuis, it is now the Street’s turn to be refurbished. kossmann.dejong, the architecture studio responsible for the original design will once more step in and work their magic.

the design and realization of the Street, just like the rest of bk City, was carried out fairly quickly and though it is a perfectly good thoroughfare, there are still some improvements to be made. these include additional exhibition space, increasing the visibility of current occupants, but also a new occupant joining the others after the refurbishment.

“Stylos, for example, has a bookshop on the street, but it is not visible and therefore does not function well enough” says Floor Schepens of Facility management. indeed, apart from a small showcase with the newest issue of “de Architect” in it, this function is not given nearly as much attention as it was in the old building, where a bright-red pavilion served the same purpose. in the new plan, the bookshop will be able to slide out of the wall and become a more recognizable place within the faculty.

Furthermore, the constant need for presentation space and the need of the bk Street to be recognized as exposition space, means that the existing show-cases will be enlarged as much as possible, and protrude into the street with models from the ‘Schatkamer’ (Delft Architecture Collections) being displayed in most of them. that way, it will become instantly clear to visitors that they are at a Faculty of Architecture, adding to the genius loci of the place. the process of

creating more exhibition space is also visible elsewhere in the Street, namely on the section of the street running through Oostserre, where a series of metal supports has been added recently.

the existing occupants will still be able to advertise their activi-ties in a series of panels which will be enlarged (as is the case with Stylos) or added (as is the case with Waltman’s bouwshop) to compensate the loss of ‘their’showcases, which used to provide them with such space.

“the separate entities on the street are not very well articu-lated and easily identifiable,” Schepens continues, “they will therefore each get a neon sign identifying who they are”. the plan calls for different colors and fonts to be used for the neon signs. this should provide for a more authentic-looking street-scape and display separate identities of different occupants.

the refurbishment itself is planned to begin in the first week

of march and should be complet-ed by the 25th of the same month. the street is to remain open during this period, though the students and staff might experi-ence some inconvenience such as the space being temporarily narrowed, though large parts of the preparations and work (such as sawing) are to take place elsewhere. the amenities on the Street are meant to stay open during the whole period of refurbishment.

the next time you walk down the Street of bk city, it will look somewhat different and will be better adapted to its representa-tional role. Furthermore, after the refurbishment, b Nieuws will move in with e-point and the street will be complete once again. We will keep you posted on our brand new office!

one of the former building's architects was bakema, a member of Team X. The street was their attempt to introduce elements of the city on a scale of a large building. The street was publicly accessible, and linked a lage lecture hall, canteen, library and exhibition space (blokkenhal).

3 groups, 21 students, 2 faculties and countless hours. that’s what the students of the minor interactive environments were facing at the beginning of the semester. their goal: to create an interactive lounge in three groups of 7 students. additionally, the students were also getting acquainted with the practical and experiential sides of making interaction. groups would make small working prototypes of a basic interaction. the combined small interactions would resemble intel-ligent interaction. further more, each group had their own definition of what lounging means and this was reflected in the three different 1:1 prototypes.

ODYSSEYLounging is seen as trying to get away from the drag of everyday life. The answer shows itself in the form of a parallel universe in which people are amazed by things out of the ordinary. Upon entering the enclosure, the move-ment activates a ripple. The ripples travel outwards from you, until they reach the wall where they travel upwards to activate changes in the flexible super-structure. Waves collide with the central column at which point the lounge shuts off the movement and changes colour.

GENThe premise of GEN is adaptability. This lounge enters a dialogue between its spatial form and the users’ requirements. Think of it as a micro public space within a building, facilitating social interaction. It orientates itself towards the users. One of the components is the bendable leaf, which together with the static structure can either make a closed, cozy interior or open completely. When entering, one can see a dynamic landscape, ranging from floor to chest height and everything in between. Each of the units of this dynamic floor will try to maintain the most attractive position, measuring when users sit down and what they like.

sCAPEThis group focuses their lounge experience on the escaping from reality by offering something interesting to the user. A strong development strategy followed by this group is that of ecologies. This was realised by creating a lightweight hexagonal shell, which acts as a habitat for a network of LEDworks, tetrahedral structures made out of 4 joined cups with magnets at the ends and lights inside. When left alone they will start to pulse within a coloured space. As soon as you couple these light-emitting creatures they will start a discussion about which colour they will acquire. This ends in a compromise of their indi-vidual colours.

dichtbij gevolgd. Van alles is

besproken, gewogen en besloten.

Wat ik me echter nu pas bedenk:

na een jaar columns schrijven ben

ik net redelijk vertrouwd geraakt

met een tekstlengte van 550

woorden, nu moet ik leren

omgaan met het schrijven van

teksten van 250 woorden. Een

uitdaging die ik natuurlijk aanga.

Ik heb al 80 woorden geschreven

en daarmee grofweg een derde

van mijn tekst geofferd aan de

opmaat van de resterende

tweederde inhoud. Mmm.

Als voltijd docent heb ik

geen tijd om

gedurende de dag

mijn administra-

tieve werk te doen.

Het kwartiertje dat

ik af en toe overhoud

is niet voldoende om

mijn laptop te starten en de post

te beantwoorden. Na het

avondeten stort zich mijn postbus

over mij leeg. Zeer onwelkom na

een dag inspannend onderwijs.

Om die reden heb ik een steeds

alert en super lichtgewicht

zakcomputertje gekocht - van een

merk dat al decennia lang door

vrienden en collega’s welhaast

religieus wordt aanbeden en

waartoe ik mij verhoud als een

novice - om zo, in de anders

verloren minuten, mijn virtuele

kennissen te bedienen. Bij 205

woorden moet ik de slotalinea

inzetten.

Kortom: in de pas met de

tijdgeest ga ik voortaan, op dit

kleine apparaat, mijn korte

columns schrijven en hopelijk

ervaart u dan de nieuwe touch.

Nu nog 11 woorden en ik heb

mijn eerste column van 250

gemaakt.

Medezeggenschap Bouwkunde

De medezeggenschap op Bouw-kunde wordt voor het personeel behartigd door de Onderdeelcom-missie (OdC) van de Onderne-mingsraad TU Delft. Voor de studenten is dat de Facultaire studentenraad. De OdC is in november 2008 gekozen en vergadert iedere maand met de decaan om te overleggen over zaken die de faculteit betreffen, in het bijzonder arbeidsomstandig-heden, personeel(sbeleid) en financiën. De OdC geeft de decaan gevraagd en ongevraagd advies en de decaan heeft voor sommige besluiten de instem-ming van de OdC nodig. Welke onderwerpen voor overleg, advies of instemming in aanmerking komen wordt geregeld door de Wet op de ondernemingsraden.

Onderwerpen die momenteel spelen zijn:

BEZUINIGINGEN / BEGROTINGDe faculteit moet nu voor het tweede achtereenvolgende jaar bezuinigen. Zowel in 2009 als in 2010 gaat het om ca. 3 miljoen euro. De grootste uitgavenpost is personeel, dus daar moeten de bezuinigingen gevonden worden. De OdC vindt dat de bezuinigin-gen eerlijk over de afdelingen moeten worden verdeeld, waarbij rekening moet worden gehouden met de bijdrage die een afdeling levert aan onderwijs en onder-zoek. De OdC volgt de ontwikke-lingen betreffende de begroting op de voet en heeft kritisch gereageerd op voorstellen als ‘Betaalbaar onderwijs’, waarbij gesneden wordt in de kosten van het onderwijs zonder dat de inhoudelijke consequenties beargumenteerd zijn. De OdC heeft “niet akkoord” geadviseerd over de voorlopige begroting voor 2010 en zal de ontwikkelingen kritisch blijven volgen.

HUISVESTING Hoewel veel werknemers over het algemeen positief zijn over het gebouw, is er nog veel onvrede over het flexwerken. Het concept

is teveel opgedrongen en niet goed aangepast aan wensen en kritiek van medewerkers. Het Evaluatierapport van het instituut Risbo (februari 2009) liet zien dat ruim de helft van de mensen niet tevreden is met het concept. Met de aanbevelingen is volgens de OdC niet genoeg gedaan. Bouwkunde kent verschillende soorten werknemers, voor niet iedereen is flexwerken geschikt: voornamelijk voor fulltime academische en ondersteunende staf is een (semi)vaste plek gewenst. Omdat die plekken er niet zijn, komen mensen niet graag naar de werkplek en dat is een punt van zorg. De OdC vindt dat het gebouw en zijn inrichting en werkconcept de medewerkers moet stimuleren om er dagelijks te komen werken. Een rigide toepassing van het flexconcept draagt daar niet aan bij.

AFDELINGSVORMING / ORGANI-SATIESTRUCTUUR FACULTEITDe OdC signaleert dat er een verandering gaande is van de organisatiestructuur, doordat er

meerdere “nieuwe” afdelingen of groepen zijn gekomen, die een grote rol spelen in financiële en personele kwesties. De huidige structuurverandering heeft geschuif met personeel en budgetten tot gevolg en de meerwaarde van sommige kleine afdelingen/groepen is volgens de OdC vooralsnog onvoldoende bewezen. Er is geen consensus in de faculteitsgemeenschap over deze organisatie, noch een heldere visie over onderwijs, onderzoek en organisatie. De OdC heeft zorgen hierover geuit aan de decaan. De decaan is gevraagd om zijn beleid hieromtrent op papier te zetten.
