Earth Day Everyday! We can make Earth Day everyday through small changes that have a big impact. Make sure you are recycling correctly. Keep the Recycling List on your refrigerator for reference. Use reusable bags, instead of single use. Donate used clothes, home goods, small appliances to thrift stores or other charitable organizations that can reuse them. Start a backyard composting pile, this is an inexpensive way to make your own soil amendments for gardening and cuts down on the amount of food waste that goes into your trash barrel. Celebrate the Earth by making a commitment to reduce waste, reuse materials and recycle all that can be recycled.

Three R’s of Reusable BagsYou can play an important role in making the City of Barstow a greener, healthier community by reducing the litter and waste generated from single-use carry-out bags by using reusable bags. Here are three new R’s to help you do it:
Remind: Place your reusable bags by the door, near your car keys, or write it down on your shopping list to remind you.
Ready: Keep a ready supply of them in your car and at the office so that you can grab one when you need it.
Rethink: Stop and rethink about using your reusable bags just for grocery store shopping. Consider all of the places where you go shopping or buy take-out food, and try using them there.
Top 5 Items to Keep OUT of the Recycling Bin Here are the 5 top items that should never be placed in the recycling bin: 1. No Garden Hoses. Despite being made from rubber, vinyl or a combination of both, this
item still belongs in the trash.
2. No Diapers. Diapers should be placed in your trash bin.
3. No Hazardous Waste. This means no paint, motor oil, batteries, syringes, needles, etc. Hazardous wastes place our facility staff at risk. Do not place it into the trash bin either.
4. No Pet Food Bags. The wax coating prevents the bags from breaking down in the recycling process, so pet food bags go into the trash bin.
5. No Electronic Waste. These items are best recycled through a proper e-recycler. Please contact Burrtec Waste Customer Service Department for drop off locations or to arrange a bulky item pick up.

Contamination in recycling barrels slows down the processing of materials and reduces the quality of the finished products. Barstow’s recycling material is processed at the Victor Valley Material Recovery Facility (MRF).
Sorted recycle bales are shipped to recycling manufacturing companies and made into new products. At the sorting line at the MRF, workers must remove any contaminants—this is an essential but also time consuming step that can slow down the process. If any contaminants are missed in the sorting process, the finished recycle bales could be rejected by recycling manufacturers and, therefore, not acceptable to be recycled.
Remember to keep the blue barrel free of contamination and avoid contamination charges for extra pick ups.
Keep it Clean in the Blue
The Household Hazardous Waste Bin, located at 900 S. Ave. ‘H’ in Barstow, is open from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. every Saturday. This is a free service open to all San Bernardino County residents. *Please ask the attendant at the Household Hazardous Waste Bin about containers for recycling your used motor oil and filters!
