It can be in the wee
hours
of morning (like 3:30 a.m.)
that we are made aware of Bird If her owner is up, Bird
is apparently bright-eyed and in good (?) voice.
And
when
she
jolly
well pleases, she nudges us
into
l istening. (I say
she ,
but
she very well
could
be a he ') We chuckle at
her chatter, the words
she
rattles
off,
and
the
whistle
she
capably
creates
cannot
be ignored if you are within

shot.
We have
not
seen Bird,

we
know
where she
lives, but
we do not

she exists
There
seems
to
me
to be a bi t of a parallel here. I know
that
my

exists,
but
I don't see Him. I know

on September 14. Norma had been invited to give a con
cert, and Tim was also invited to share in the great event.
This beautiful Christian artist and lady has always been
one of Tim's favorite musicians . To say he was thr il led
and honored to be able to participate is putting it mildly.
He was likea kid counting the days until Christmas. There
was an additional cherry
on
the whipped cream. Tim's

September is school bell time,
and
so
Jerry and Tim
were eagerly
looking

a
period

Labor

Tim
was
soon
elated
with all he was learning and enjoyed participating. It
continues to amaze us how he learns.
Money
is sti ll
the
most difficult thing for him and anything that requires
reasoning
ability. Jo

works
with all
the Hi Hopes
in academics, and
they con

progress.
She
is a jewel, and
Tim
loves her.
Possibly one
of
the most astounding things
that
has
hap
pened
is Tim has entered
into
singing This is something
we have encouraged and t ried to
ge t
h im to do fo r a long
while. Since
Dad
is a vocalist,
naturally
he has always en
couraged
Tim to sing. As a little boy he
did
sing, and very
well, unt il he had th e
tumor
removed from hi s neck. This
affected
his vocal chords, and
f rom then
on singing was
n il . S ti ll
we
knew he
could
do
it .
Carol Teunissen, vocal
for each of them and then scrabble type letters to go on
the keyboards. I said to him, Are you going to have 10
separate bags of letters?
If
you don't, you'll have a
problem ' He had 10bags He was explaining the keyboard
and telling them to move to the right to go upward in pitch
for the higher notes
and
to the left to go downward in
pitch for the lower notes. It took considerable experiment
ing and work to get them to go left and right. Although
they are classed as mentally handicapped, one is astounded
at their ability to grasp and pick up. Again, it is patience
and
the
right key.

We were privileged to have a return
concert
on
November
16
with the
Lawndale
Church of Christ,
Lawndale, California. Before the concert, as we visited
in the lobby, a tiny little woman came up to me and said,
I can't wait
to
hear Tim.
I've
heard so much about him '
She talked
on and then
said something
about her
size. She
was just a bit below my waist.
I'm
a munchkin from the
'Wizard
of
OzJ chuckling as she spoke. I laughed
and
thought what a cute joke. The concert started, and she
sa t behind us. She leaned over
and
whispered in my ear,
Please have Tim play 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow
He did, and I turned around and smiled at her only to
see tears glistening
on
her cheeks. After
the concert
was
over, she was down in the crowd going through
the
line.
Poor
little thing was
about
to be trampled on. She finally
reached
Tim and
pulled
on
his
coat and
said,
I 've got
to hug you 'He bent over and weall had tears. She hugged
me and th en left. The
ladies behind
her
said to
me, Do
you know she was one
of
the munchkins from the 'Wizard
of
Oz'? You can be sure weweresurprised Tim thought
he
wa s

is
one
of
hi s
very favorite movies. Hazel Resmonde is a dear
and
precious real live munchkin and
had
Tim known before
she left, I bet he'd have brought her home

AND STILL ANOTHER SURPR ISE
I recently retired and now have a newspaper

Tim
was in awe.
After the program
was over,
we visited a bit again, and he assured Tim he would give
Liberace his greetings
when
he went to Las Vegas soon.
The only thing to supercede
that
would be for Tim to have
gone
along in his suitcase

As

the

an
extremely taxing time,

the

got
close to the finish line (December

of the
last concert before Christmas,
Tim
said, Mom,
where are we going
for
Christmas? I was t ir ed
and
cer

thinking of any more concerts
at that
time. I
said we weregoing to rest and do nothing His l(^k
of

got
to me. Finally he said,
But,
Mom,
we've always done something nice for people as we have
traveled
and
been with people.
Don't
you

I was a l it tle

he'd say

Christmas
Day in all its beauty of sunshine and

of

dawned. We
made
ou r way to
th e
mission.
As we
approached,
we were
astounded
by
the long
lines
of people waiting to be fed
(about
1,500 altogether). I was
sick
at heart.
Hundreds
of children These were mostly
homeless
or

many
off th e streets.
As
we
arrived
we
were
taken
with haste to the piano,
and Tim
started to play 20 minutes
before time. The man in charge stood there
and
said, I
needed this so much We have a lit tle girl, 8,
who
is retard

me
After
while a lady,
who
was helping also,
came
up,
How
much
Tim
has helped
m^'
she
said, We have
a 20 year old son. I feel like giving up so
many
times
What
a struggle we
know
they have
had, and
if
we helped,
we
t hank God
for
the opportunity.
I
had no idea
where
to
call
when
I picked
up the phone book.
I
just
asked
the
Lord to
direct
me. I have no doubt he did Tim played
fo r
about 20
minutes,
and
the lady
who was leading
the
program announced, Tim
will
be
with us
to play
all
day
We

When
she finished

went
over to her and said we were no t aware they
wanted Tim so long, and I had not discussed it
with
Keith
(the director)
and tha t
we
had
only
planned on
a
couple
of hours. Well, it all worked
out,
bu t I guess if we should
go
another
year, we will
spend more
time.
Each person
received a wonderful meal, and many took food
with
them. They were each given a new warm blanket and mat
as
most
had
no
beds. The children eagerly received several
toys each.
All sang
as Tim played, and
pure joy was most
evident. Yes, I
tliink
we
were needed
there, and
Christmas
was very much
more meaningful, and
I

Tim
and
the

day
This brings us to now.. .and I say WOW

HOPE REACHES A
NEW
HIGH
Hope University - UNICO National College has had
an extraordinary blessing On January 15th a reporter
from TIME magazine began lengthy interviews, con
ferences and ensuing trips around Southern California to
witness the Hi Hopes in action. He was not only a
repor ter. , .before it was all over, Edwin M. Reingold
became a treasured friend of the Hi Hopes
and
all
of
us
at the college. Now this one page story, March 2, 1987,
issue has changed the life
of
our striving little school. We
are still striving, don't get me wrong, but let me say the
world has learned to know that we a re here and what we
are
attempting to do. This
story has
drawn attention from
not
only
most
of
the
U.S.,
bu t
it has
brought
world wide
at tent ion .
A bit
of
a run down to date: There have been 40 plus
media contactscalls from Japan (for a satellite telethon),
Italy (magazine), Greece (music therapist from the Univer
sity of Athens), Canadian Broadcasting Network,
Australia (interview
via
telephone),
another
call from
Central
America
(forget country). A continuous succession
of
TV. coverage keeps
the
daily events
from becoming
methodical. PEOPLE magazine will have a story very
shortly.
Numerous
newspapers have come,
among
them
a feature
story
in the L. A.
TIMES. There
have been
at
least
12
mov ie o ff er s
and
numerous
documentaries.
The UNICO organization
(Italian-American service
club)
that
is
purchasing the
campus for the college has
retained
an
agent to handle all the pressing decisions. Also,
a recent interview was
held with
one
of
the producers
and
a well known
star

in
a movie.
The
ultimate
goal is to have it done to the best advantage

though it was cold those

The UNICO

to say, they treated them like royalty and saw to their every

just
lots of fun At one of th e

Tim was so
thrilled
to
see
our
friends,
Debbie Williams and he r mother, Eva

sure
the concert
was special
for them.
At th e en d of th e
tour,
we noticed a
little
of the

zapping them, and
it made its rounds. Tim was really sick,
as were others, for a number of days. I had
to laugh
when
I heard him speak. His voice was so raspy and low I said
he could sing the
song,
Papa

awakened one morning and found Tim's bicycle,
that
was
chained to the steel post in
the
carport (in what was sup
posed to be a secured complex), had been stolen, we took
ou r hunting seriously and prayed more fervently.
It is a long story how we
found our apartment, and
space doesn' t permit tel ling it now,
bu t
the Lord was
wonderful in His guidance,
as always, and opened
al l the
doors. We found a very nice condominium in a quiet, gated
community of
74
units (mostly senior
citizens), and
the
moving
experience
proceeded
during
the
week
of
Spring
vacat ion with the big day April 10. It was so taxing
physically and mentally, bu t we feel that we have
moved
from our MOTEL type apartment into a real home. ALL
the
boxes a re now empty. Dad has room
to
set up his
Guitorgan,
(That
makes us all feel good .)
and
we have
an office This,
next
to having a safer place, was urgent
for me to retain my sanity. So as I write this , we are
snug
as a
bug
in a rug. We have leased
the apartment
for two
years with the hope of purchase. (Owners are in the
north
west and
uncertain
about selling.
If not,
then
something
else will possibly be available.) We are thankful for
the
past year of being able to learn the area and know where
we
would
l ike to be
and
that we were successful in finding
a
place
about 1 J/2 miles-from-theLcampiis to be. It is
just
wonderful,
and Tim
still thrills at Disneyland being
just a hop, skip and a
jump
away.

I wonder how I ever lived without a computer. That is
really saying a lot since I certainly am not an electronic

the

than
I ever hope to.
Our

PLANS
UNTOLD BUT
REALIZAT ION ON HOLD
In a morning meeting
January
25, followed by lunch,
Jerry and I hosted the advisory board members of the
Department
of Religious Music
of
the college. It was
exciting to
continue
basic
plans
for the
department
but
yet very disappointing since none
of
the plans can be
implemented to any great extent until we get into the new
campus.
Each
and every month we think this will be
the
month we move. BUTthat day will come, and we will
be even more appreciative. The total group of
HI
HOPES
have
al l
shared in numerous concerts in c hu rc he s. In
addition
smaller groups have gone out, so we have been
able
to at
least
do this much.
Our dream
is,
o f
course,
of
students from Biola University coming to
our
college
and
working in
depth with
ou r
students. This
will give
them laboratory
time
and offer us
the
advantage of
the
talents each of them has. The
bonding
of acceptance of
those with mental retardat ion lies in the adult s
of
tomorrow.
This brings that about. You cannot be
around
these people
and NOT
love
them.

NEWSFLASH
Tim has been
invited
to play with Floyd Cramer at th e
Grand Ole Opry
on
May 31. It all came about this way:
The phone
rang Saturday morning (May 2) just as Jerry
was taking Tim to the college to meet the HI HOPES to
go to a concert. I yelled
to him to
get it as I was busy.
Then as I walked into the
den,
he was saying, Wel l, we
have a
concert, but le t
me
have you talk
to
my
wife ' As
he
handed
me the phone, he said, This is Floyd Cramer's
agent,
and
he wants
to know
if
Tim
would be free to
play

A number
of
years
ago
Tim
heard
Floyd play
the song
that he
has been
so popular for, 77?e
Last
DateV He took
to it immediately and wanted to play it. He listened
and
learned, bu t when it came to get ting it, it was
beyond the
ability
of
his
hand a t tha t
time. He
continued
to
work
and
work
for
what
seemed
like years
on
it.
Jerry
helped
al l that
he cou ld
but
told
Tim no t to
be discouraged
as
the
technique was
too
involved for his
right hand
and
fmgers (the hand affected by
the
cerebral palsy).
Tim
turned off these remarks
and
persisted with listening
and
trying.
A long time later he was practicing
one
day while I was
getting
dinner.
The song
he was playing was
' 'The Last
Date','
and
I remember thinking,
It's
sounding somewhat
better ' As he played,
there
was a terrible noise I
thought
something
had
h it the
house. Then Tim said,
HAND,
DO
WHAT
I WANT YOU TO DO I felt
sorry
for
Tim,
but then I knew he
wouldn't
give
up
unt il he got it.
Practice persisted with the result being the right hand
and
f ingers gave in to his demand. That song has become
o n e o f T i m s
favorites .
Sometime after
that he said,
Mom,
I
want
to write
a
note and
send a tape to Floyd
Cramer and
tell him thank
you
for helping me with that song ' I said,
I don't
have
his address ' Tim's reply was
just
as any child thinks, You
can
find
it.
Mom '
Mom didn't find it; I didn't even try,
mostly because I thought he would expect a reply, and
I
know
th e
amount
of mail these people receive, and also
many
t imes they do not receive it. I didn't want him
disappointed.
As the
years passed, he
continued
to badger me
about
it,
and
I resisted. Finally , I, like the hand, gave in. O.K.,
Tim, but don't expect
an answer I don't,
Mom. I just
to Nashville, I
got
a sweet
sounding young woman
who
really was a help. She produced
the correct
address and
agent's name. Tim had spoken briefly on the tape and said,
Thanks,
Floyd, for helping m^' and I wrote a short note.
We
shipped
it off. I felt rel ieved to know NOW I HAD
THAT DONE.
Jerry did
his
part
and got
it in
the
mail.
And then to
our
utter amazementfive days later this
call. That's
how
it
came
about. Mr. Rogers was so
kind,
and
they
were
thrilled to he ar from
Tim, and
thus the
invitation to be with
Floyd
in concert at the Grand Ole
Opry.
We do not have any detai ls as yet.
They
are to cal l us
back later
with particulars. Main purpose of
the
call was
to see
if
we
could
come.
Of
course, it
took
a bit
of
coaxing.
As we talked, I asked Mr. Rogers if he would like to
talk
to
Tim,
and he said,
Oh,
could
I?
Tim's
face bore a
big smile when he knew who it was, then a grin from ea r
to ear , fol lowed by laughter, and as
the
tears welled up
in his eyes, he said loudly, Praise the Lord '
All
I can
say is may this be a further means of
people knowing
what
the Lord can accomplish in all our lives. Pray for us as
these
plans
unfold.

Disneyland
Many of you recall how many bicyclesTim has
had
stolen.
In April still another bicycle, secured by steel chain to a
steel post in
our SECURED apartment

and
taken. There need be nothing more said
than
that Tim
was devastated. Jerry
and
I felt so very badly
that this
happened
again,
bu t
we also felt a certain sense
of relief. Bicycling in Anaheim is most dangerous. The
streets

so
congested, courtesy and consideration
for
others
is
sadly
lacking,
and
drunk drivers, as well as
those
under
the
effects
of
dope, seem to flood
the
area. Even
though Tim
was very careful in riding each time he would
leave on his bike, we were
concerned until
he arrived home
safely. I have always felt
that
the Lord has to have a very
special
guardian
angel over him,
and
I
think,
consider
ing
many
of the things
that
have transpired in his life, that
angel must get weary at times. Tim's lack
of
judgment,
vision,
and
sense of danger concerned us,
and
as welooked
forward to an additional onslaught
of
summer tourists,
I was more apprehensive. I said to Jerry, We

I assured him he

Later in
the

were to be available for 20 minutes for people to meet us
and ask questions. Those 20 minutes turned into 2 hours
and
15
minutes, and we were able to talk with so many,
and Tim playedthe WHOLE time.A lady came and asked
if it would upset him if they sang? I told her definitely
NO He would love it. She requested a hymn,
and
for 45
or so minutes, a very large
group of
the
women stood
around the piano singing their favorites. A tiny, beautiful
Japanese woman
tugged at
Tim and
pulled
him
to reach
his cheek. She planted a big kiss, then gave him a lovely

her

Another

It was a year ago in July when mother had her stroke.

and
were

year no t being able to see her. We
had

summer because the schedule was so
full.
I
became
more
anxious as summer was passing, and
mother
kept
BEGGING to hear Tim play. We found we had only three
full free days in a row from August till after the first of
1988. We decided that was too long. We made
arrangements to go back over Labor Day weekend. Three
concerts
were
arranged
in
th e
area.
One
for
th e area
churches,
held at
Jackson Christian
Church,
one
at
the
Canton Christian Home where we have so many friends,
and the thi rd where mother is, at Hanover
House.
We left
California Saturday, September 6, and came home
Tuesday, September 8th. We were
unable
to visit family
and friends as we
spent
all
free time
with mother,
but
we
did see many at
the concerts.
That was a bonus. Mother
was able to come to my brother's, Clyde, and

and

the family

was Sunday, and we wondered if she would be able to

hard and
long on the song. New

his cousin, Kraig, were talking music and about this song
too. Kraig likes it and so does Tim, and Tim said he'd play
it for Kraig. Jerry said it wasn't ready yet for concert. Jerry
gave the audience the opportunity to choose their favorite
songs.
Tim
looked down at Kraig, sitting near

and

BRAVO. . ASSOCIATION
OF
CHRISTIAN
SCHOOLS CONVENTION
The invitation to
perform
at
the
Association
of
Christian
Schools International
Convention was a very meaningful
experience.
It
was held here in
Anaheim on
September 24.
There is much detail to the background of this invitation,
bu t Jerry
and
I were really anxious that this performance
be next to perfect. Many people are uncertain that mentally
handicapped persons can contr ibute to society. This
invitation was rea l ized after
a friend made known
Tim's
talent. It was important
that
the audience
of
7000
to
8000,
mostly teachers and^other educators, l^ve withTapositive
attitude about
handicapped people.
Tim
was introduced
by a lady, in a beaut iful manner,
and then
he played.
He
was
saturated
with
the Lord's
presence, as I don't think
I have ever seen him
perform
as he did. When it is shown
on
TV., we pray it convinces a lo t
of
people
God can
do
It is always a rich experience to encourage younger parents.
You feel
their
pain,
their
fear,
and
share
their
tears.
They
have so
much hope
now,
and
we encourage them
to
seek
the
greatest resource, OUR LORD. Our
workshop
was
at
the noon luncheon on
Friday,
and Tim's concert
was
Saturday
night. I guess
you
can see
now
why we
NEVER
thought
of
no t
going. Everything
about the convention
was absolutely perfect. It was held
in
the beautiful
Holidome West in
Ibpeka.
Food and accommodations
were superb. Activities included a fabulous Bar-B-Que at
the Governor's Mansion (minus the Governor and his Wife
who had to be ou t of town). Even though a COLD breeze
came
up, everyone was warm with
joy and the
presence
of his femily and housekeeper. We had two television
interviews while
there
too, and
as
we reflect on al l that
transpired
and
the wonderful people we
came
in contact
with,
we
cannot help bu t continuously thank HIM
for
allowing us all
the opportunities that are
ours. Sharing
what
we have
learned
through study,
trial
and error and
being able
to
encourage
other parents
is
indeed
a privilege.
On Saturday
before Tim's
concert, the piano tuner
came
to
tune
th e
piano.
He
was stunned Wo G
strings
were
broken,
and
since it was Saturday,
the
stores were closed.
Tim said, Don't worry. I'll manage ' Then the co-
chairman of th e
conference said,
'Tim,
there 's a

th e comer ' There sat
a full

Tim's
eyes popped out. . . Boy, will I have fun
Again, we shuddered. But he did have fun, popping the
buttons and experimenting as he went. All's well that ends
well. A
standing ovation
and
again
playing
the AFTER
CONCERT concert ( Please

into the night makes Tim aware that he DONE GOOD,
as they say. We
had
to

him

church service was on
the horizon.

After waiting
one
year
and not
hearing from a publisher
I sent my book proposal to, I wrote (3rd time this year).
I had sent a change of address
and
additional
informa
tion. I guess
the
3rd time was
the
charm, and they wrote
back that th^^
had
sent
the
proposal materials back in
December 1986.1 never received it,
but
the
part that
was
so frustrating is they
did
not have
the
courtesy to write
that
thQT
had
sent it
back
after I wrote with
the
other
information. So now, it is
back
to
the
beginning and wait
again.
That
is the life
of
a writer they tellme. Crying didn't
help, as Tm no better off than I was No
one can

what
I want
to
do, so I guess I will go
ahead and
write the book as I see it should beand
pray
that someone
will publish it. Will you pray
about
this too?
For
those
of
you
who
are waiting for
Tim
to
make
a new recording
.well hopefully we will
soon
be able to send you
that
information.
Workings are in

Most of
you are aware of Tim's interest
in
drawing. He
comes by this naturally since dad is an artist. As his interest
increased and he progressed, he beganmaking Christmas
cards and then note cards. Many peoplewho received these
said, You ought
to have
them
reproduced * Well, Hnally
we have. We chose eight dif ferent cards
and had them
printed in
FULL
COLOR,
and
then packaged eight dif
ferent cards with the envelopes to a package: On the back
of
each
card
is a
brief
story
of
Tim.
The
cards
are
called
GRAND EXPRESSIONS by TIM,
and
each is of a
musical design. The inside is
blank
allowing space for note
writing.
He
still has a constantdemand for the hand drawn
packages also,
and the
college sells
them on
their table
when
they go out in concert. It is difficult
for
Tim
to
keep
ahead.
Eldon
Walker, husband of Doris Walker who is
the director
ofHope
University, told us he needed
al l
th e
Christmas
cards
Tim could make.
He had been making
them
as fast as possible,
bu t
they
were
out.
I
told Tim,
and he
stood there
an d
looked at
me and then
said,
Mom,
I'm making
them as fast as I can..
.Eldon just
sells them
too
