PROGRESSIVE RECOLLECTIONS

.. .The three months since our last letter seem more like threeyears as I look over all that I hope to include in this epistle. Ourbrief visit at home (I say visit, as it was so short) in Septemberwas busy and enjoyable. We presented our workshop threeSunday mornings during the Bible School hour for the St.Andrews Presbyterian Church. and mountains forming silhouettes against the pink cloudlesssky brought to our minds the peace in Christ Jesus, and thecertainty that "the Lord is MY Shepherd". We could feel Hisneamess as we rested weary bodies... .Sept. 23 — A lovely cool cloudy day on the desert. DesertCenter, California, was home that night. Sept. 24 found usrejuvenated and eager to be on our way. bowling in the afternoon with the A.R.C. (Association ofRetarded Citizens) kids and parents. The usual custom ofdesserts for them on the wayhome was a real treat... .Sept. 27 —First concert of the day was 9:30 A.M., thesecond followed at 10:30 - both at the State Hospital inCamarillo. 5:00 P.M., a lovely potluck dinner at the CamarilloChristian Church foUowed by Tim's concert there. Preciousfriends from MILES away who came were Elsie Gatcomb ofCosta Mesa, CA., Mr. and Mrs. Bryan Jossart of Newhall, CA.and Marcha Vickers. What a thrill to see them. How weappreciatetheir interest and support... .Sept. 28 —Breakfast at the Lacy's and then we headedMelody down the coast hi^way. Am(»t memorable spotalongthe ocean (high on a diff) was aneasy place to park. Will alwaysremember the view. A few days of welcome rest followed...next, stop — Anaheim, CA. area was home base for awhile.Sunday A.M., October 4, worshipped with Garden GroveChristian Church. In 1951 Jerry and I were music evangelists in a6 weekmeeting with C. C. Root as this church was bom. What aTHRILL to go back and see the tremendous progress. Tim wasprivileged to play for the service. Evening was a concert at theKnott Avenue Christian Church, Anaheim. Floyd Strater, theminister, has an eloquent gift of words. Heused Tim'shandicapto illustrate his message entitled "Opportunities and Opposition." Had time for a wonderful visit with friends of manyyears, Don and Minnie Mitchell, of Garden Grove and her sisterand husband visiting from Barberton, Ohio, Helen and JimThomas. A friend Jerry had not seen since a very young boy,Norman Hancock, (now married) made himself known. Jerryand I lovehis parents dearly, Loran and Eunice Hancock.Loranis associate minister at this church... .October 5 —a chance to have the famous Knott's BerryFarm Chicken Diimer for lunch. Tim preferred peanut buttersandwiches - can't you imagine how hurt Mrs. Knott wouldhave felt had she known this? Tim begged to ride his bike thisday. Coming home at the 5:00P.M. rush hour traffic, and rightat the comer where our motorhome was parked, he was makinga left tum, and a man coming too fast caught his wheel andthrew him to the pavement. Only the Lord knows how he wasspared serious injury in that mass of traffic. A frightened Tim,and a bit banged up (not seriously) was so thankful to seeMomand Dad, as we walked down the sidewalk from the PostOffice.. .and a scared Mom and Dad, vvdien theysawthe younglad wheeling the bike afterhe picked himselfup in the centerofthe intersection, were able to ease the trauma of the situation. In His all powerful y/ay, our Lord protected Tim, and thru Hisprovidence, we happened by at the precise moment of need.THE BIKE??? A mangled wheel mostly. Greatest problem wasthe injured spirit of the boy, Tim, until a monthlaterhisprideand joy was finally able to be taken to a shop for repair. (Wewere not in a place long enough for it to be done.).. .Sameevening.. .A drunk went tearing thru the mobile home park wewere parked in, knocking down a transformer. Nearly aUelectricity doWn! Mother was 86 years YOUNG this day. Abright spot. Tim had numerous private concerts for manypeople he befriended in the mobile home park. A lady and heralcoholic daughter cried when they heardIrm play.A book andtape purchased by them. May the message of both sink intotheir hearts... .October 8 — Loran and Eunice Hancock took us to dirmer. They had beenon vacation, and we were afraidour paths wouldnot cross. Such a happy evening!.. .October 9 — It was an 8:20 A.M. concert at the EastsideChristian School, Fullerton, CA. It was good to see ShaimaNewton teaching there, well and happy. Not sure Tim was

awake —but \^^en he saw the gor^ous grand piano,he camealive!! .. .On down the coast hi^way to San Marcos, CA.Arriving at lioyd Stanley's, whose driveway was a great spot forMelody. Soon found that our time and talk weren't right foreach other. Needed lots more time —had lots of talk. Tim was ababy when we first met. Had a concert at Palomaf ChristianChurch, October 10, A.M. - fast lunch and off to the highcountry. Ramona, CA., next stop. PJtf; concert at the ChristianChurch, which is very special to us. A full house with manyfriends of long-standing who had come a long way. One veryspecial lady in her 80's and her daughter and son-in-law, ArvaHatcher, and Mr. and Mrs. Gene Bell of Escondido, CA. Lovelyrefreshments and fellowship followed. The drive home in themoonlight thru the mountains was so beautiful.. it reflectedthe beauty of God. We saw it then in His creation andenjoyedit all day in Hs wonderful people... .We moved Melody from the Stanley's home over toEscondido to Pete and Janet Mayfield's home. (He is preacherat the Ramona church.) Such cherished friends. Jerryperformed their wedding more than a few years ago, weconsider them family too... .October 13 - Janet's parents, the Fred Haller's, took us allto dinner prior to a concert at the Hidden Valley ChristianChurch, in Escondido. Tim might eat before a concert but thereis a repeat performance AITER as he is ALWAYS starved,so itwas to Janet and Pete's to fiU him up again. At 10:30 P.M.followed the freeway to Fullerton again, to Pacific ChristianCollege. Chose to go at ni^t to miss the heavy A.M. traffic.Arrivedat 12:30 A.M. and lights out at 1:00 A.M.

.. .October 14 - 7:30 A.M., a little knock on the door. (Wewere parked in the parking lot of the college.) Surprise!Another friend (Won't say OID, but seasonedwill do.) KathrynEUett of Lawndale came to see us. Her husband influencedJerry into Christian work. A nice visit, then into the chapel.•Rm gave a mini-concert, and we had a brief visit with KnofelStaton, the college's new president —then lunch, after v^^ch itwas off to Fountain Valley. Tim was 2 years old when we lastsaw Art and Janet Reese (the minister). I don't know if I wouldhave retained my sanity, had it not been for these wonderfulpeople, when our Tim was so sick as a baby. Janet wasmy rightarm, and Art was right there too. This church had a feast thatwoiid beat Thanksgiving. How they loved us and responded tolim. Don and Minnie Mitchell came back, we snatched a briefvisit and said good-bye. Caught up on the intervening years atArt and Janet's after concert. Bedtime was the next day!.. .October 15 —Coffee at 10:00 with Art and Janet, and sadfarewells. It was hard to leave. It always is—everywhere we go!Destination this time was anticipated for a long time too.Hemet, CA. Jerry's first cousin, Nela, and husband, MelFlanery, who live in Romoland. Jerry and Nela don't rememberwhen they saw each other last, but I never met them so it's over31 years. Wow, Nela had a diimer, and did we eat. Theyexercised their jaws, and I worked (in the motorhome).Thought they could reminisce better without interference.Another next day bedtime!.. .Early —Tim and Mel off on bikes after a HEARTY sausageand everything breakfast. To the church in Hemet (men only)for a piano preview. Tim practiced, back to Mel and Nela's—lunch— then onward to San Bernardino. This is anotherHOME to us. Jetry's home church and where we met. Preciouspeople, precious memories. Bob and Alta Howell greeted us andmade Melody comfortable. (When she is comfortable, the wholefamily is.) A delicious pot-luck followed, Tim played a fewsong3 as a concert preview. A long time of visiting after thedinner.

.. .It was up early Saturday. Practice time in the church, thenoff to Perris Hill Park where Tim gave a concert for the benefitof the disabled. The piano was transported by pick-up from thechurch, and Tim played from there. The pick-up was driven intothe center of the activities, and all were seated at tables aroundthe area of the truck. Unusual and FUN for Tim.. .back to Meland Neia's that night... .October 18 —Another farm breakfast by Mel got us in highspeed. Services (A.M.) at the beautiful Westside Baptist Churchin Hemet, a brand new facility built mostly by the men in thechurch. A packed house and a warm reception. Mel and Nelahosted a fantastic Chinese dinner for 24 friends and relatives ata restaurant in San Jacinto. It was superb, and Tim gloried inMEETING new family. This precious time of reunion also cameto an end, and we journeyed back again to San Bernardino. A6:00 P.M. concert was scheduled at the home church. It had

been many years since we had seen Wilma Roddy also. She camewith her son, Jack, his wife, Janet, and their daughter, Janee, and Janet's father, Mr.Price. Tim has a special place in his heartfor Wilma. How happy we all were to see them. Also ourbeloved friend, Elsie Gatcomb, Tim's staunch fan, came to hersecond concert, bringing her husband, Morrill. The church had alovely fellowship, and we had time to visitwith so many dear tous. Melody had a lot of sight-seers too... .What a privilege was ours to meet Max Timbrook, theminister at Central. His love and compassion for the mentallyhandicapped was projected so honestly. So it was also withDean Summers, the youth minister... .The week that followed would have been much moredifficult had it not been for another seasoned friend, OlaDennis. She knew our schedule and was our escort. She did notbecome tired or bored! Rather, she became more enthused andpositive. Ola is a retired super educational administrator. TheLord is head of her life and heart... .Monday to the School of Hope (workshop and school forthe mentally handicapped). The kids clapped all thru theconcert. Bob and Alta Howell fired Tim up with a deliciousMexican dinner that eve. We enjoyed it too... .Tuesday morning a concert for the Merry —Mixers, a clubfor the disabled. A tour of the lovely new disabledcenter in SanBemardino showed considerable progress of communityawareness. It is the finest facility we have seen thus far.Aftemoon was at the Anderson School — this was for thetrainable mentally retarded and their parents.

.. .Wednesday there was a breakfast with Wilma Roddy andmore visiting —Noon —Lunch with the Dean Summers, then anaftemoon of discussion on setting up educational programs inthe church for the mentally handicapped. An evening concert atthe "Friendship Qub", a lar^ adult group of mentallyhandicapped, and sponsors. From there to Alta and BobHowell's for the end of the, Bible study and dessert. MaxTimbrook (Central's minister) attended numerous concerts withus. Awareness of behavorial pattems is so important beforeentering into involvement with these kids, and the best way isto leam first hand.

.. .October 22 —Ola took us to see a dear friend of Jerry's—now 90— Mrs. Richardson and her son, Norman. Coffee andvisiting followed, and then our hearts were sad —time to leave. We saw so many, did so much and enjoyed eveiy minute, itended so quickly. Now enroute to Las Vegas. Didn't get far, started too late but no hurry this time... .October 23 —Arrived in Las Vegas after bedding down inBarstow. Tim was alarmed—"WHAT are wegoing there for???"I think he still doubted that there was a church in this city andthat some very special friends lived there. When he saw the

building, he became less skeptical and was raring to go when heeyed the elegant 9 foot concert grand in the sanctuary ofCentral Christian Church. It wasn't a bit difficult to get him topractice there. Esther Slaymaker's idea of dinner at a chickenhouse hit the spot. How wonderful to see Esther, her son, Bob,and wife, Janet, Van Meetran and Ed Jones. They all migratedout of the Central Christian Church in San Bemardino way backin the OLDEN DAYS (quoting Tim), say like the 1950's. Feltlike we had known Bob Kroh a long time, tho a newacquaintance, and tremendous minister of this church. Lots ofdiatter that night!.. .October 24 — A day of practice and a bit of site-seeing.Esther came and took us to see LIBERACE'S MUSEUM. This is

a collection of his wardrobe (whew!), antiques, antique cars, and PIANOS. TIM'S eyeballs about jumped out. Almost uponarrival an attendant and Tim struck up a conversation. Timcalled to me, and I went over to where they were standing. Theattendant asked if we would come back on Monday as he wouldlike for George Liberace to meet Tim! Lee (liberace) was ontour. They knew of Tim. Well, you can't say "No"to that!!

GEORGE LIBERACE and TIM

.. .October 25 —First worship service at 8:00 A.M. Then Jerryand I spoke at Bible School; second service 10:00. Moresite-seeing after a lovely Mexican dinner. Whose house was onthe list? None other Aan Liberace's. Beautiful! As we weregetting out of the car, camera'etc., Tim had already beenaround the house and become FAST friends with Ken and JanWright from England. I was a bit overwhelmed at his forcefulapproach BUT the feeling was mutual, and Jan had to have apicture of Tim. They hoped to attend his concert that night butin the maze of Las Vegas, lost directions. Tim said, "We'll neverhear from them again." I said, "No, I doubt it?" Not so, alovely letter and picture came. Some day we hope our paths willcross again, and we'll have time to leam more about thesealready GOOD friends. Evening soon upon usI An industriousminister and enthusiastic congregations produced a nearlypacked house that eve., and Tim really produced. That pianoalmost made its way behind Melody. Ctaly reason it didn't waswe had no TOW Bar. It was tuned before the concert andAFTER! Thanks to a man in the congregation. Still more tocome! "You have to see Las Vegas at night," they said, so Boband Janet Van Meetran toured us down the Strip. It had been 30years since we had seen it at night! Just a lot more of the same.Beautiful, but so sad. Jerry's remark, "I wonder how they

Page 4: Baley Gerald Rosemary Tim 1982 International

decorate at Christmas?" Good question. And then it wasgood-night. What a great day... .October 26 — A RED LETTER DAY! Tim was more than

eager to get back to the museum. As we arrived, we weretreated like royalty. The gracious attendants produced Georgein short order, and his kindness to Tim was genuine. After aconversation he looked straight at Tim and said, "Tim, howwould you like to play Lee's Glass Concert Grand Piano?" NeedI say more? Tim could hardly contain himself when he haa seenall of the pianos on Saturday. It was the conversation for manyhours after. Tim's face turned pink, his eyes misted, and his grinwent into a laugh.. ."MEU! YOU MEAN ME?" George, ofcourse, had an affirmative reply. He said, "Tim, follow theattendant over to the piano, and he will make it ready.". Timabout crawled on his back, he was so close behind theattendant. The museum was full of people. (2 bus loads plusother tourists.) George announced who Tim was, and where hewas from, and the people gathered around. I do not believe Timever expereinced anything so thrilling. There are, of course NOpictures to be taken in the museum, but I asked if I could takeone, and they said yes. As I put the camera up, a man sdd,"Lady, NO PICTURE taking in here." I turned and smiled andsaid, "He is my son, and they said it's o.k." He said, "Oh, thenI'M his father." I really don't think he believed me —do you? Afew songs, cheers from the people, a bit more conversation withGeorge, and we were on our way. A moment which, in Tim'srecollections, is tops, and putting a monetary value on it wouldnot be possible.

.. .Education has been a main part of our life always! Felt Timneeded a little education concerning the Las Vegas strip. He hadseen glittering lights, they were pretty. We went into one of thebig hotels. It was almost more than he could take. We soon left.He said very little, then.. ."The lights are so pretty on theoutside, but it's awful inside!"! thought, do we reflect thebeauty of our Lord outwardly—but have a filthy heart, mindand mouth?

.. .Next stop Phoenix, Arizona. It was a treat again to seeBoulder City, Lake Mead, and Hoover Dam. A new area forTim. His eyes nearly popped out... .Arrived in beautiful Phoenix. Our home base for the first

handicapped young man. Jo and Vem Lock and her mother,Mrs. Bidner, booked these weeks for us. We met Jo in Denver,at Craig Rehabilitation Hospital when Tim played there lastsummer. Their striking 16 year old son became a quadraplegicafter a wrestling accident. He suffered a broken neck. God hasanswered many prayers on Eric's and the family's behalf. Wefelt a love for Eric and Jo immediately, and it has growncontinuously for this exceptional family. (Met Vem, Eric'sfather, and sister, Julie, when we arrived at the home inGlendale.) Jo's tremendously busy schedule and constantschedule of therapy for Eric, etc., did not allow much (if any)free time. She called HELP, and her lovely mother, Mrs. Bidner, took over and the schedule was filled. What an exciting twoweeks—you will see. Please pray for the Lock family.

Thanksgiving dinner, T.V.station came and filmed concert and did an interview. ArizonaChildren's Hospital. Sudi cute kiddies. Lots of sadness. They

God is sogoodto us to havegiven us this lovelyday... .Friends, Ora and Beulah Bolen, (En^ewood, CO.) are in^ache Jet. for winter. "You must come to our court and letHm give a concert." "No time," I said, "except Friday night.""That's good." Carefree Manor is a lovely winter spot foranyone wanting out of the snow! Breakfast with our dear(xies.. .and off.

.. .Caitch up day —Diimer with Gilbert Church secretary andher husband - the Thomas's. She can make a great Chinesedinner.

.. .November 29 — A.M. two services at Maryvale ChristianChurch - and then to Chandler, potluck dinner and concert inP.M. A host of people came and said good-bye as we wereleaving Phoenix area next day. What a LOVELY surprise. Thisconcert has memories imbedded so deeply, well alwaysremember.

.. Preparation to Move Along—Last concert in Phoenix area atArizona State Hospital. About 300 mentally ill, mostlyalcoholic or drug related cases. The lady proceeded to informand ease Tim of the behavorial situations. Many are noisy, restless, win probably leave, etc. Finally Tim said, "Iunderstand, I had to be in a home for a wWle, don't worry."Lady relieved and amazed, I am sure. Concert started.. .groupnoisy, restless, etc. Soon quiet, then singing, men walked up tothe piano (lid was up). They couldn't visualize ALL that musicfrom that instrument. They watched the strings and Tim.Another man talked to Tim the whole way thru a song. Timtalked back and NEVER IX)ST A NOTE. Soon he started toplay SILENT NIGHT. They sang softly, there were smiles, andmany tears, and then—because it has a waltz tempo—a couplegot up and waltzed, the others sangsoftly. One man got sick, hevomited, attendants covered the emasis with towels. The smokeof chain smokers reeked in the room. Tim's contacts burned hiseyes. A man then acted out a song as Tim was playing. Timsmiled at him and played on. Soon the patriotic songs.. .whitehaired lady sang at the top of her voice. Fears in my eyes andJerry's. The restlessness and noisiness were gone. The noise wasparticipation. The hymns and gospel songs were calmingmedication - different than alcohol and dope. The lady smiled, and the concert was too soon over. "I've never seen anythinglike this," she said. Peace I leave with you, MY peace I give untoyou, John 14:27A. So be it Our thoughts were turning tohome now. It was 8:00 P.M., and we headed Melody southeast. She purred like a kitten, in cruise, down the interstate. Drivergave in (not Melody).. .Beddy- bye at 1:15 A.M. Love thoseroadside parks!

hamper the spirit and attendance. Ron and Shirley Norveli,Houston, TX., formerly of £1 Paso, honored us by braving theelements and coming. John Oliver, Rosenberg's minister, impressed us as a fine dedicated young man, another we call afriend.

.. .Because of a scheduling mix-up, we had a few days free. Wewere really grateful, in a way. A bit of rest. Galveston was notfar, a few days on the coast... .Had a day to visit Ron and Shirley Norveli in Houston anddo a little Christmas shopping... .Then worked our way back toSan Antonio. Everyone says, "See River Walk,"and we did. Anadded beauty, they had the luminaries lit December 12th and13th. We made the 12th. Oh! so gorgeous—so many drunksaround it, spoiled the atmosphere... .December 13 — Visited Eastwood Christian Church in San

Antonio. Tim was asked to play. We enjoyed their pot-luck. (Wetimed that just right.) Nancy HoUett begged to take Tim homeso he could play for them. They all had a great afternoon, and Iam sure Nancy's cupboards were bare! P.M., Tim gave aMini—Concert. It is rare to find a church that is more friendlythan Eastwood!

. S.A day we waited for! To Corpus Christi for Tim's lessons.Red Camp, Tim's teacher, had been ill. They assured us he wasback to the point of teaching. Tim could hardly contain himselftill he saw the Camps. Lessons were truly laborious but oh, sobeneficial. Tim was challenged and raring to work. Alvis and Ihad some nice talk while the guys worked. Oh, we love tliosepeople... .A couple of days was all Jerry could take this time. (Somuch new material.) We said good- bye and were on our way toLockhart, TX. Don and Georgia George were awaiting ourarrival, and we could hardly wait to see them. A great dinnerand gab—fest during the evening. We "squeezed"Melody in thedriveway beside their house.. .Next day over to the Golden AgeHome, then Cart\s4ieel Nursing Home. Don and Georgia had

Open House for many friends of the Lockhart community thatevening, and in their spacious living room and dining area, theguests gathered for a concert. Their beautiful antique grandpiano and Christmas decorations offered an elegant aura. Thefestive evening was deli^tful... .It was cold, and early next moming a soft knock on themotorhome door. A kind man had come back to tell us againwhat a meaningful evening he and his wife had had, to wish uswell in our work. What a NICE way to start the day! Soon wewere on the interstate heading south to Tip-O-Texas R. V.Village in Pharr, Texas. This is home for many people(SNOWBIRDS) during the winter. It was our home that ni^t... .December 20 —Preview concert at the Park church service, then over to tlie Valley Christian Church for a concert in themoming service. Patrick Johnson, minister, received us warmly.Lunch, afternoon concert, back at the Tip-O-Texas R. V. park, then hurried over to Alamo R. V. Park in Alamo, Texas, forevening concert. Long standing friends, Dow and Lillian Hough, spend the winter there, and it wasgreat havinga brief time withthem. Also, there was a lady from my home church, HelenFrolick. Surprise—what a small world. Lillian fixed a mostwelcome after-concert supper. Bed felt good. And so the curtaincame down on another phase of the tour! It would behomeward to El Paso on Monday, the 21st... .Picked up our mail (Thanks to Uncle, it was on time.) andpulled away at 10:30. A night along the highway, and El Pasowas just beyond a few more cacti... .1 think it was too early for dawn. Even when Jerry awakenedand started driving (at 4:25 A.M.), and he took Tim and mealong—though we weren't up and dressed. This was December22, our 31st wedding anniversary, and getting home wasPRESENT enough... .This left the 23rd and 24th to get ready for Christmas. Myweary being said, "Let's just look out the window at thebeautiful huge star on Mt. Franklin, enjoy the neighbors' li^ts,

Page 7: Baley Gerald Rosemary Tim 1982 International

and forget we even had any decorations." A family conferenceand all agreed. Another day dawned, and our bodies a bit morerested, I began to think decorations! Result, a lot of boxes dnigout, a few decorations up. We had been ble, ssed by holidaylights, decorations, parties, food, and love all across thecountry, and greatest blessing of all was the realization that wehad the greatest gift, too. Jesus, this babe who came, was OURsavior now.

.. .Next anticipation was Grandma's arrival. That day sooncame as we met the plane December 29th. Her trip waspleasant, and she was WELL received... .The end of this memorable year was now upon us, and theend of this, another chapter of BALEY'S NOTEBOOK.

Our lives have been so enriched and blessed by all we have comein contact with. Only a few performances did not allow for usto witness for our Lord verbally, but Tim always did thru hismusic. Numerous congregations have now expressed interest inreUgious education for the mentally handicapped, realizing thegreat need that exists. Our earnest prayer is that the flame willnot flicker, and the fire go out, but that 1982 will see a growthin this among churches. Many families with mentallyhandicapped have related how they have been strengthened, many expressed themselves only thru tears. Words were notneeded.

.. .It is exhausting, glorious, depressing, exiting--all the words inthe EngUsh language can't describe it. I've tried to highlight it —but much has been so personal, I can't speak. Only God knowshow we thank HIM for this ministry. We thank each of you whohave stood by us financially. The offerings on the road havetaken care of Melody's expenses, and our Lord has not allowedus to NEED a thing.

.. .We owe a BIG debt of gratitude to one we have knownALWAYS and loved for just as long. She is our forwarding a^ntwdio serves thru my home church, North Industry ChristianChurch, Canton, Ohio ~ Mrs. Max (Eva) Snyder. She spendshours handling the travel monies, our personal .support, and thefunds which are received from tlie books and tapes. Book andtape money in no way covers our living. Money for these wasborrowed, and when all bills are paid, a fund for reprinting anda new tape of Tim will begin. (If this ever balances out andthere is a surplus, then this will go into a trust fund for Tim.) Isay this because I am sure many wonder... .Another big thank-you to my cousin and his wife, Billie andJean Stokes, Garfleld Hts., Ohio, who are now assisting inbooking.

.. .Grandmother's yearly trek to our Sun Country is cherished. To allow this we are staying home in El Paso most of Januaryand February, taking care of the mountain of office work andgetting out this document. Jerry is working with Tim daily onhis new techniques, which came as a result of the recent lessons, and they are working on considerable new music for the 1982tour. We had standing commitments before we left and addednumerous ones since arriving home. It will be a great time!.. .Our path will again take us east this summer; had notexpected this, but so many wonderful opportunities, we arehappy to return. If you want us in your area, we will try toschedule, if we hear irrmiediately.

Wepray your 1982 will be blessed far beyond any yeais.

Rease keep us in your prayers always, as we shall rememberyou/Trust Him.

We Love you — each one,

Pianist Tim Baley: An exampleof what the handicapped can do

It docsn^t matter lo Tim Bnlcy thathe cannot read or write or managemoney as well as other 29-year-olds.

"We each have our own ability," hesaid.

What he can do with his hands —especially at the keyboard of a piano —makes up for the brain damage he suffered at birth. He illustrated hismusical talent at two informal performances at UNMC last week, playingtunes ranging from elaborate arrangements of "Chopsticks" and "Do-Re-Mi" to "Spanish Eyes" and "AmazingGrace."

Tim and his parents, Rosemary andGerald Baley, are louring the countryto show what handicapped people cando. Their appearance in Omaha was toattend and perform at the first nationalconference of Parent Network. Inc., aconkroncc co-sponsorcd by MCRI.

"We're not out to show what Timcan do," Mrs. Baley said. "We're outto show what can be done if you persevere. It's not easy."

When Tim was born, Mrs. Baleysaid, "the doctors said 'institutionalizehim; forget him.' "

At the age of 9, Tim discovered apiano where he was institutionalizedfor the first month of diagnostic study.

"He just gravitated to (hat andwould hardly leave ii alone," Mrs.Daley said. "After a month of (his, hewas on his way."

He has since laken lessons and now

plays his own arrangements of well-known songs almost completely by ear.He reads very little music and rarelyplays a song exactly the same waytwice, Mrs. Baley said.

When he performs, he uses a smallcard that tells him the name of the songand the kev he plays it in.

He listens to music "almost 24 hoursa day," Mrs. Baley said, and he playsmusic over and over again to learn themelodies. His music lessons are alsotaped for his study.

"Ever since I was 9 years old," Timsaid, "I started playing the piano. I enjoy listening" to music. I'm never without a moment listening to music."

He also makes Indian jewelry, drawsand has.made miniature baby grandpianos out of Kleenex boxes.

The Baleys, whose home is in ElPaso, Texas, are louring the country ina 29-foot mobile home, an anonymousgift they have named "Melody." Theyhave traveled 16,000 miles since receiving the mobile home in June. Tim hasgiven concerts in schools, churches, nursing homes and senior centers sincethey started the tour last May. •

Their interest in slopping in Omahawas sparked by the Parent Networkconference's authors night. Mrs.Baiey's book about her and her husband's life with Tim. their only child,is entitled His Birih Made a Difference;HIS Birth Made THE Difference.

Tim, who has an IQ of 70, graduatedfrom special education. Mrs. Baleysaid parents of other brain-damagedchildren should not accept negative advice about their children. "Just keepplugging, no matter how bad ii looks. Our strength came from the Lord. There is certainly a lot he has tooffer."

Tim. Mrs. Baley said, hopes lo become a star.. "I hope he can. 1 feel thiswould be real progress for the field ofmental retardation."

At UNMC, Tim performed at an informal press conference and in a lunch-lime concert in Wittson Hall's Amphitheater.

.. . YUK. My stomach did a flip flop as I opened theair tight tupperware cake server. My eyes beheld whathad been a delicious, beautiful cake, but NOW it wasspoiled, full of mold, and smelly. . . in EVERY wayundesirable. I had forgotten to preserve it when we lefthome, and it remained in the cake server to spoil. As Icleaned the mess, I thought we can certainly becomejust like the cake. Without a constant association withthe Lord, our soul's preservation is NOT possible. Asong I love so very much is "Living for Jesus". .. HEIS THE RIGHT PRESERVATION FOR EACH ANDEVERYONE. Psalm 1.

INNOVATIVE OPPORTUNITIES

.. . 1982 ticked its way into being ever so quietly inour home and the area surrounding us. Stacks of worktook precedence over an evening on the lighter side.AWARENESS of the NEW YEAR'S birth was upon us,however, when we heard a few bells, guns, and horns. Then it was over. "Time to eat," I said. The lovelylunch mother had prepared was tasty, and we thankedGod for this brand new year and for all theopportunities that He would lay before us. May we bemore energetic and aggressive than the year before.

WORKING ON HAP-E-NINGS TO CUM

.. . January and February were delightful, hecticmonths. It was a,real joy to be home, but as we lookedat all the "NEED TO and MUST DO", it left us withone lone thought ~ HOW TO? Top priority writing, preparing, and mailing our previous newsletter.Condensing three months into a few pages was mostdifficult. Writing a book is lots easier. The mailing listneeded lots of attention. And then hours of time werespent on scheduling, 1982. It's sort of like doing ajig-saw puzzle. It all has to fit together! Jerry does the

routing, and I g6 from there. Many have asked SOWdo we make up our schedule. When a firm date is askedfor by someone, that is accepted, and then we schedulepoints in between.. .. Then many hours were spent onnew music and techniques that were given in theDecember lesson Tim (and Dad) had with Red Camp inCorpus Christi. So many have said, "I would like tothank Red Camp for all he has done for Tim." WEWISH you would. I know Red would love to hear fromyou. . . and you can write him and his lovely wife, whohas been a constant help also M/M Red Camp, 548Naples, Corpus Christi, Texas 78404. DON'TPROCRASTINATE!

INSERTING EXCERPTSOF THIS AND THAT IN EL PASO

... January 10. The Sgts. Major Academy at Fort Biggswas having a farewell dinner for a graduating group ofmilitary who were leaving. Tim was to give a concert. The flu hit him very HARD Thlirsday (preceding theSunday). Friday he was a lot better. Saturday, beautiful weather. A well boy (He was sure.) pr6vedNO amount of talking (even from Grandma) couldconvince him he shouldn't bike ride. AND

Page 11: Baley Gerald Rosemary Tim 1982 International

THEN... Sunday A.M. "Vm not feeling very good."Day wore on. 4:30 P.M. Dad went to the emergencyroom of the hospital to pick up a prescription for Tim.5:30 P.M. enroute to dinner. A smiling, happy, SICKTim performed without saying, "Excuse me, please."The enthusiastic, warm response of the audience madehim feel better, and with a few days of rest, he wastiien ready for the bike. He was even convinced Momand Grandma were right, just this ONCE!

.. . January 18. A Great Day. A sweet, young voice wasat the other end of the line saying she was fromWashington D.C... . Result of conversation Timplays at the White House again on JUNE 10, 1982."That's neat," said Tim. "I sure hope the President andMrs Reagan are able to be there." "I doubt he will be,"I said, "but some day hopefully, you can meet apresident, Tim." His other dream is getting to thatgorgeous GRAND with the gold legs in the East Room.I don't think we dare go near it this time. Thetemptation is too great!.. . January 20. Lovely luncheon A.A.R.P. (Concert).. . January 24. Mountain View Christian Church inLas Cruces, New Mexico. Bart Morse, minister. Lots ofspirit in the audience and Tim... . It's a must. Best get it done. Our time had toinclude tax preparation. UGH! Such a job this year. What a precious person we have in Lea Clark, who hashelped us every year that we have lived in El Paso. Shesaid (well, not really), "Your signature is all that isrequired oh your return. Cross my heart and hope todie is NOT necessary."... The upkeep of a house continues whether youLIVE in it or not. Jerry felt the need of a little "fairy"to come and paint the trim on the house. However, shedidn't appear, so he got in gear. Same old story, though, ran out of time before work. We still need alittle "fairy"... . February 4. St. Alban's Nutrition Center.(Concert)

DOWN THE ROAD HERE GOES OUR "MELODY"

(If you're familiar with the song "In My Heart ThereRings a Melody," you will catch on to the abovecaption. If not, I just changed the words.)On with the trip. February 6. It was off to Sierra Vista,Arizona. K-M^ parking lot was the ideal spot forpreacher. Lee Erwin, to spot Melody and lead us to theSierra Vista Christian Church. Time for practice and

then dinner with a former voice student of Jerry's andsuch'a dear friend (had not seen in, oh, so many years).Hazel and her husband, Deane Chenoweth. Had such anice visit, then bedded mother down at Motel 6, andMelody and her inhabitants found rest at the churchparking lot. We were so blessed by this congregation, and a re^ly special blessing was our former neighborand BESTEST friend, Pat Lish, came to the concert.Happy Day! The church has a program for the deaf.Possibly one of the most CHERISHED letters we haveever received came from one of these fine couples. MayI quote, in part:

"Dear Friends, We want to thank you for coming toour church a few months ago. We can't HEAR BUTcan FEEL the vibration when Tim played the piano. Itwas SO beautiful, the songs that he played even thoughhe is brain-damaged We told everyone about TimBaley. Many never heard about him and his pianoplaying We would like to order a book and taperecord from you. God Loves You All,"Nuf said Tim got more than a few hugs andkisses and was overwhelmed when a dear woman saidshe must do something for him, and knowing he lovedturquoise, she slipped one of her own lovely rings ontohis finger. His eyes were misty for quite sometime.... On to Tucson for the Arizona ChristianConvention that afternoon. Lots of loved ones there. The workshop leaders were detained because oftransportation difficulties. Jerry was invited to presentour work in one workshop, and I, th^ other. This wasan added bonus for us; however, we had anticipatedhearing those who could not be there. The flu andsevere colds were knocking people out like the plague.Result •• 2 choirs unable to perform. Tim filled in witha mini-concert. The Whipped Cream of the evening washearing Ben Merold speak! His message waschallenging and certainly uplifting to us. It was GOODto have been there..,. Next day... cloudy and an excellent day to travel.God gave us a safe journey.

HOME WORK CONTINUES

... February 9. Sad day mail came, and housepayment escalated $125.00, THANKS to taxes.... February 19. Sweetheart Banquet sponsored byEastside Christian Church. We had the program. Jerrytook me. I thought it was because I was his sweetheart, but he said, "NO", it was because we were singing... . February 20. A farewell dinner for Grandma. Shewould soon be going home.... February 27. That day here. How we hated to seeher go but can't compete against all the other children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. THERE'S NOPLACE LIKE HOME, even if it is -20 and snowing andblowing. That's where she has spent 86 plus years.Besides all that she has a HOST of priceless friends andrelatives. I guess wie ought to be thankful for twomonths.... February 28. Last Sunday home. A glorious day..Spent it with our dear neighbors Mike, Josie,^linda, and Yvonne Padilla. They went to churchwith us, then we all went out to dinner. Evehing was aconcert by Tim at the New Testament ChristianChurch. The lovely bouquet sitting on the piano madehim wonder, "Is it real? "... Examination ... Itwas! ... Oh my, better move it, it just might bounceoff... and then a kiss was blown to the audience, andthe last encore was played- Curtain down on El Pasoconcerts, and after a brief time of fellowship andrefreshments, it was home.. . ..Could it be real? Were there only about 24 hoursbefore we Igft? YES.

A SNOWSTORM going into Dallas isa real bummer, especially in the 5:00 P.M. traffic. We'lltell you about it sometime. MELODY waded rightthrough, though. GLOBE TROTTING CONTINUED

.. . Melody is about to learn her way to Corpus Christi. The Red Camp's had arranged for our reservation at anR.V. Park. Grateful! The Ice Follies were in town.Available spaces were 0. Tim had worked very hardthe past three months and was eager to let Red knowhe had. The next two days were satisfying, gratifying, strenuous, and happy. Red literally drains himself as heteaches, being so very sure Tim and Jerry understandwhat progress is to come next. We never cease to thankGod for Red and Alvis. Prior to our visit Red had beenmugged and robbed in his' o-vVn garage. Not hurtseriously, we thank God, but I can only say if Tim evergets hold of the robber, he wouldn't even be a goodgrease spot! Oh, he was distressed that any one wouldhurt HIS Red Camp.

.. . Lockhart, Texas, and the Don George's as hosts,March 16-21. Started out with concert at the LockhartHigh School. Then Liberty Fellowship (TheNicholson's minister here.), next the Junior High, followed by Faith Chapel (M/M Don Ormonds servehere.), and then the Intermediate School. It had been athrilling week in Lockhart, and departure time was ath^d. Final concert with the First Christian Churchand their amiable minister and his wife, the GarryDudders, and lots of goodies at the reception gave usmuch joy in thought and talk as we once again headedMelody down the highway.

AN EXHILARATING EVENT

... It was something we said, "NO, IT WILL NOT BEPOSSIBLE TO DO." Yet, a letter that had arrived andwas laid aside, foimd its way to the top and was rereadin its completeness, and we realized the dates ofrequest and our time now were clear. The letterrequested my being at Autiior's Ni^t at the FIRSTANNUAL PARENT NETWORK NATIONALCONVENTION. This is a gathering of parents ofmentally handicapped children from all over thecountiy. National and international leaders would betiiere. We had hoped to be able to share in a positiveway with this very sort of meeting. A telephone call setit all in gear. lim would surely be a positive livingproof of what parents are loo^g for, a source ofencouragement. It was a LONG WAY; weather couldand WAS forecast to be snowy, icy, and cold. Weprayed, "LORD, TAKE CARE AND PROVIDE OURNEEDS, IF THIS IS YOUR WILL." The ni^t we leftLockhart, it was to rain and turn to snow. Hum!Drove tiU 2:00 A.M. There was a moderate wjnd.Stopped and slept. Next morning (Monday) was sobeautiful. All day Monday was lovely. WHAT WOULDWE FIND WHEN WE AWAKENED TUESDAY? Samelovely weather. On into Omaha. Now a little rain. Atleast 4 inches of snow coming they said. Wednesdaymorning... lovely, sunny sky. Aiid so it was allweek! Opportunities afforded themselves for Tim togive concerts at the Nebraska College School ofNursing. At this one they came in and did a TV shotwith the nurses in attendance. The atmosphere wasdelightful, beautiful perfect in every way! Thepiano was also a 100% instrument... . And then next

-day-anottier concert-^r tiie-staff and students at theMedical Center. Many said they had a changed point ofview on the MENTALLY HANDICAPPED. We said,"That's our mission." A bit of rest.... Then it wasopening night of the conference. A lovely social hourwas planned in connection with the conference. It :wasdecided in the midst of this Tim should give a concert. That was just great. Many people who were notconnected with the Parent Network but AREinfluential in programs for the mentally handicappedwould be there. Arrival time... Tim dressed ... Thenanother TV station came. "We would like to film-theconcert." So in the midst of all the activity, there camecalmness, and Tim started in. The photographer said itwas the most FUN assignment he had everhad.... Tim thou^t the lady interviewer wasbeautiful, just as tiie one was ilie day before. I toldhim I thought he would be spoiled if a maninterviewed him. After the concert was over, requestscame, and finally the evening came to an end. It was avery long, hard, glorious day. Parents came up, manywitii tears rolling down their cheeks. "Our chUd has alove for music., Fve never dreamed anything like thiscould develop." Our confident answer is "With GOD'SHELP much can be accomplished."

AND mS A SMALL WORLD

.. • "You'r6 from El Paso? Do you know Bart andKathy Morse? " Answer "She did the typesettingof my book, and he did the printing." This was aportion of the conversation we had with Ann MarieAita. NEXT a lovely woman from Corpus Christisaid, "I lived around the comer from Red Camp's formany, many years." She was Patricia Duaine, author of"If They Would Only Listen! ". Excellent book. Youwould enjoy it.

JUST THINKING

... The week in Omaha soon was over. Sharing withother parents problems and dreams, being able toafford some encouragement and receiving much, making a HOST of new friends again gave us anexperience that all the money in the world could notbuy! God had seen us safely there, supplied our fundsto go, and let us ^are with so many that their strengthdid not come &bm within BUT &om above. AND amost meaningful statement came as we left. "Tim isliving proof gainst abortion." We had never thoughtof such a thing; we could NEVER think of abortion, but you know ^e man wasright. He really was!... With overflowing hearts we took to the hi^wayagain. West on 1-80 and the first stop, Julesburg,Colorado. It was a "HELLO" stop. Tim tickled theivories at the church service that ni^t, and afterwardwe gathered at Phyllis and Bill Dye's for refreshmentsand another concert. It was a spontaneous and FUNgathering. So good to see so many friends. Dye's said,"You're not driving on to Sterlir^. You both are tootired! " There was this change of plans, and Melodywas ma!de comfortable in their driveway. They wereright, too.... Monday, March 29. Denver was our destination.Weather forecast WINDS UP TO 80 -100 miles perhour across the area we were in. Oh my. "Lord, we'reon our way, and hi^ profile vehicles and wind aren'tcompatible. Take care of us, please." There was wind, but nothing serious. Arrived in Denver mid-afternoon.On to our destination at the Bear Valley Cl>ristianChurch. Getting pretty windy now. Had a lovely timeof fellowship and a dinner with Berean class membersand other friends. We were in the basement. Eveningwas now over; we ascended to the upper level. Whoee

this wind was doing its thing NOW. Again, "You'reNOT going." We didn't need any coaxing. SteeredMelody over to our friends, the Louis Kirkpatrick's,and bedded down. We wondered at times if we wouldtake off (and not by wheels but by air). Amazinglyenou^, we wereso tired we SLEPT as we rocked. Stillthere in the morning! Such a pretty day dawned. Howdid that happen out of the state of confusion the nightbefore? Again God had cared for us. The 100 mile anhour win(^ didn't come till we were at ourdestination! Over and over I am reminded of thewords of the beautiful old hymn "He Leadeth Me".How true, how true.... March 30. A slow start, but we got in gear andwere on our way by 10:00 A.M. Saw lots of windowsblown from buildings, etc. as we rolled out of Denyer.llome was 750 miles down the highway. Lots to dothere. SO we just keot pedalling, and at 5:00 A.M.next morning we r^ched 2501 Portland. It was slowgoing as the wind blew. Not bad, but enou^ that youcould not gain any in speed. It was my birthday.... Ibarely remember the day. We weren't too bright-eyedand bushy-tailed.... The voice said, "Rosemary, you're home. I'm glad. This is Jack Winzenried." Wonderfiil timing, and itwasn't an April fool's joke. He was in town on businessand also his friend. Jay Doering. Both are fromPennsylvania. "We are going to twist your arm andtake you to dinner. You choose the best Mexicanrestaurant and tell Tim." His mouth watered all day.Didn't need to twist my arm. I enjoyed every minute, and so did Jeny. Back to the house after eating. Timplayed a long time, and then Jack and Jay left. Such awonderful reunion with Jack and a new found friendin Jay!

Hard at Work at Home

.. . April 2. Time now to head to New Mexico andArizona for a brief stint. A telephone call from Fredand Naomi Ewing said, "Hit Lordsburg (New Mexico)at meal time." Bless their hearts that didn't takeany coaxing either. Melody's step came up, and thewheels rolled at 2:30 P.M. Naomi had a lovely dinner, and friends, Rachel and George Stone, stopped by tosay hello... . April 3. Phoenix, Arizona, is always a deli^tfulplace to go (even in summer). This was our destination. We had looked forward to a reunion with the Mt. ViewQiristian Church for a long time. Dinner with the BillSuigener's topped off the evening.. . . April 4 was delightful from beginning to end. Timplayed for morning worship. Freddie (the minister)and Nola Griffith, very SPECIAL people to us, and ourfriend, Helen Douglas, took us to dinner. A goodsession at the piano in the afternoon and concert thatevening. The relationship and love of Maxine and PhilStoddard goes back more years than I almost like tosay (cause it must mean one 6f us is getting old), butanyway they took a bunch of us out after church. Tim,about starved (He usually is after a concert.), couldhardly wait to eat. Norm and Joy Baldihg fromDenver, Colyrado, (visiting in Phoenix) and Lester andDonna LeMay came to the concert. It was so good tosee them all... . Next day a savory dinner served by Freddieand Nola, and then we were on our way. Casa Grande,Arizona, was only a short drive.

... Awaiting us were Don and Joannie Hepler andkiddies. This was a wonderful reunion too, and it wasanother one of those nights that we about forgot tosleep. Their little Kimmie decided Jerry just had to beher grandpa, and Jei^ thought that was the greatest.Such a precious, precious family. A concert at a nearbynursing home and practice at the church was onTuesday's schedule.

.. . April 7. Casa Grande Christian Church concert andan excellent crowd.

... April 8. We left Don and Joannie's enroute toFarmington, New Mexico, and travelled across highcountry on 1-17. There were pine trees galore, and thensuddenly there appeared this spectacular view of-theSan Francisco peaks, all covered with snow. The sun

peeked out from behind a puffy, white cloud ahd castits light as if it were a brilliant spotlight exactly on thesnow white peaks! Predisely at that moment the taperecorder was playing "Our Great Savior" and then itwas followed by "How Great Thou Art." Psalm 8.There is noting more to say.... April 9. Had stayed overnight in Gallup, NewMexico ... going to Farmington. As Jerry pulled ontothe highway, we heard this NOISE. Oh, Oh. jCould itbe a tire? Not a tire. Drove on. Must have been a rockor something. Didn't see anything on the hi^way.Traffic heavy, narrow hi^way. Melody DIDN T feelgood. Starting to shimmy. Best we head back to town.HOW? No place much to turn around. A two lanehighway and 1^20 mile an hour vehicle aren't verypopular! ! ! After an hour at that speed, we finallywere back into town and safely in a 76 T?ruck Stop.Repairman said, "You're in BIG trouble! The irearU-joint is broken. We can fix it if we can get the part."Even though it was Saturday AFTERNOON, they weresuccessful in getting the part, and after a few hours wewere on our way and certainly thanking the Lord forour safety and provision of what was needed. We madeit to Farmington just in time for a lovely dinner. AndBELIEVE me, we were ready for it.... We were told Jim and Sheila Lotspeich had invitedus to dinner. That last name is not common. Therewere people of that name in El Paso. Further talkrevealed Jim's father had taught Tim string bass at theInstitute of the Arts. Tim dearly loves ^inn Lotspeichand was stunned to leam he was in his son's home inFarmington. We were all AMAZED! What a deli^tfulevening with that family.... We put Melody to bed that night in the back yardof the Darrel Qark's. A nice visit and to bed (late)... . Morning was early. The perfect EASTER Sunday!Tlie day started with 8:30 A.M. worship servicefollowed by Bible Scho6l and another worship serviceat the Farmington Christian Church. A kindly, refinedgentleman, blind and disabled from the ravishes of^abetes, was wheeled down the church aisles. Lovedso dearly by the congregation, they were motionless asthey anticipated hearing his rich, very resonant, andweU controlled baritone voice. It had been ten longmonths since he was in the Lord's house. Now turnedto face the audience, he spoke in a voice filled withemotion, and tears trickled down his cheeks. His wordswere so very sincere and complimentary as he spoke ofTim's gift from God. He had been overcome. His wordsthen were, "I want to dedicate this song to my brotherin the Lord, Tim." Tim's hand lay on mine, and as Idanced at him through my misty eyes, tears bouncedfrom his cheeks. I have never heard "Were You ThereWhen They Crucified My Lord?" sung morebeautifully or with such feeling as did Owen O'Neil, now retired from the pulpit but continuing to be theliving example Christ wants us to be, no matter whatthe state of the physical body... . Ralph Sorter and his wife, Gloria, minister there atFarmington. Ralph was a fine young lad when we livedin Grand Junction, Colorado. We have watched himmature into a NOW fine young minister. His parents, our friends for so very many years, came over to spendEaster with the grandchildren. We .were so glad to seethem. It had been so awfully long since we weretogether. We shared a lovely meal at noon with Gloria,Ralph, their three children, Ralph's parents, and otherfriends in the church, Chet and Glenna Eberhard. About of practice followed, and then time for a quick(much too quick) sandwich with Vemon and CarolHollett. Vernon and Carol were students and a youngbride and groom when Jerry taught at Intermountain

Page 15: Baley Gerald Rosemary Tim 1982 International

Bible College. Their perseverance and dedication to theLord's work among the Navajo Indians have been arewarding effort thou^ not without difficulties. Carolinvited many, and we hated to have to hurry, but timewas running out... . The church had worked hard, and the effortssurely paid off. A full house, and a lively, responsiveaudience increased Tim's enthusiasm.... Then therewas a pleasant reception, followed by a sadness thatalways is there when we say good-bye. We had feltsuch strong love, and WE strongly loved.

JOURNEY'S END

... Into the night now and across Highway44. . .. 10:30 P.M. Albuquerque came upon us at 3:00A.M. Rest was needed to journey on home. A 76Truck Stop did it all Melody was filled and able torest a bit, all in one spot. At 5:45 A.M. Jerry was onthe road, and Tim and I followed. (Not as wide-eyed ashe was, I assure you.).. . The seemingly ever constant wind was at low ebband stayed with us till home. We had the thought inmind of lying down and going to sleep when we gothere, BUT other things pushed that thou^t aside... . We have the remaining days of April to do"CATCH UP", then we'll be heading eastward, notreturning to El Paso until mid-July.... Because of the difficulty of getting messages, wehave installed an automatic telephone. This we callinto every few days. If you prefer to get a message tous by phone instead of mail, please call our homephone number and leave the message, and we. willreturn your call, if you so desire... . There have been a number of other exciting thingsmaterialize. Next letter will give space to this.... WE HAVE PRAYER REQUESTS. 1. ALWAYS forour safety as we travel and that we can keep ourschedule. For our health and strength and witness. 2. Apiano is needed badly in the motorhome. An electronicfull size spinet (wt. 195 lbs.) is available. It has a fullkeyboard and plays exactly like a piano. (Until ourhouse payment escalated so terribly, we thought thiswas a possibility.) 3. Melody is going to be needingnew shoes (tires, that is). No small item, price or size!

Home, Sw/eet Home

... It is hard to realize, by the'time you get this wewill have been in this ministry now one full year! Aswe look back and see how it has unfolded, we standamazed. . . and yet as we look ahead we can see furtheropportunities that will be even more astounding. Hehas promised to LEAD if we will only follow. Theprayer for each and every life should always be (again afavorite song), "Follow, I Will Follow Thee, MyLord".. .. Humbly and prayerfully this is our prayer. Please pray for and with us... . Tim's birthday is June 23. He LOVES mail. If youremember, send him a card.... We are grateful for your gifts, love, and prayers.Blessings to you and yours, ALWAYS, AND in ALLWAYS... . 1983 is being planned. Let us know your requests. And so keep a song on your heart and a prayer on yourlips.

We Love you Each One.

.. . Some have wondered, How did our "name"evolve? It's a combination of the words "musician"and "missionaries". We replaced the word "mission"with "musician" and came up with the word"musicianaries".

"TIM'S HYMNS"

... In her book, Rosemary tells not only of the manycrises in their lives, but also how God has given their sona tremendous finger dexterity and how it led to a keeninterest in piano. As parents they did all in their powerto encourage Tim in his music. His little one finger andone hand tunes led to two fingers, two handstand soonhe was scaling the keyboard! Tirti plays almostcompletely by ear, never with music, and a song is rarelyplayed the same way twice. Those who hear and see himMARVEL at this God given ability, and many requestswere made for tapes after reading the book or hearinghim-thus "TIM'S HYMNS - HE TOUCHED ME" wasmade. The name so chosen simply because truly GODtouched this one's life. There are 17 favorite hymns onfhe cassette.

TIM AT LIBERACE'S GLASS PIANO

.., The highway led us through a vast, flat, nearly desert areafor many miles. The scenery had been beautiful, but suddenly itwas spectacular!!! We were now amid lush green vegetation andspiralling peaks of pine laden mountains. The shades of greenchanged with the shadows and the bend of every curve. Wecame over a summit, and our breath almost left us at the viewwe beheld, and precisely the next song playing on the taperecorder was "Somebody Bigger than You and I"... Soon wewere again in the open area, and amazingly the song playing was"How Big Is God?" The vast peaks assured us God was certainlybigger than we were, and there was absolutely NO WAY tocomprehend "How Big God Is!" Psalm 8 is so descriptive andespecially verses 1and 3.

Amid all the activity and excitement, it seems the calendarsays, "Address yourself to the next 'Notebook'." It is hard torealize so much has transpired since July 8 when I left off.

... From the last concert in Amarillo, Texas (July 7), thehighway led to Corpus Christi. A visit in Mathis with friends,Helen and Gene Bream, worship service, and a lovely lunch withthem, and we then continued the last 40 miles of the LONGtrip. The peaceful, beautiful campground (right on the Gulf)was a Haven for Rest, and at last we were there!

... July 12. Tim is always "high" till we finally get to Camp's,and he sees ///S Red and Alvis. (Red is his teacher.) The firstday of lessons and then Jerry and I went back to thecampground. Tim walked the 5 or so miles back. He got to themotorhome and spied a ship coming in. He raced back to see it(about a mile) and got as close as he could to the ship! Notknowing a stranger, he was soon in conversation, and then to hisDELIGHT the men took him on a full tour of the ship andengine room! After the next day's lessons, we headed Melody(our motorhome) to El Paso. Now it seems this brilliant little(not so little, really) motorhome has made this trip so often she

knows the way. "If you stay awake, I'll get you home in 15hours." Melody's drivers gave in about 2:30 a.m. to a bit ofneeded rest, but finally there was an E! Paso at the end of thattrip. After 750 miles and I8H hours, it was a reality ••we wereHOME!

... When we got there, we wondered WHY we were so anxiousas we realized ALL that had to be done, and it was HOT -- over100 degrees. We had to get the air conditioner going eventhough we'd only be home 9 days. Jerry did his thing workingon the air conditioner, and I thought I'd never seen an end tolaundry. Much time then, in again preparing and mailing the1700 newsletters.

... July 18. A concert in the evening at Zion Lutheran Churchin El Paso. A kindly senior saint (retired minister, piano tuner)came down the aisle when Tim finished. He hu^ed him and saidhe had tuned the piano for many great and fine artists but didnot realize when he tuned it for that concert he was tuning itfor the greatest pianist in the world! Tim was so humbled andgrateful for such an expression of love.

.,. July 19. A DAY to always be remembered! Through theefforts of a dear friend, Veny Webb, of Horizon City, Tim waspresented with a Baldwin Electronic piano for the motorhome.(It's a full-sized spinet and weighs 195 lbs.) Veny was trulyconcerned we had no piano in the motorhome, and she knewthe drastic jump of our house payment left absolutely no hopefor one. She went to work and soon raised the money fromHorizon City, El Paso, and across the United States. Our familywas overwhelmed at the love of all who gave and also thegenerous discount given by Schroeder-Baldwin Studios, fromwiiom the piano was purchased. This presentation demanded acelebration, and so the music store was filled with friends andtheir guests, the news media, andcustomers who just looked onin amazement! A representative from the mayor's office, Deruiis

Page 19: Baley Gerald Rosemary Tim 1982 International

Wagner, made the presentation, and Tim shook hands with him. Then he planted a kiss, filled with deep affection, on Veny'sdieek and gave her a white orchid for her beautiful attire. Timwas asked to christen the piano. Without hesitation he played"How Great Thou Art." When he had finished, Dennis Wagnerasked that he play the "Old Rugged Cross" and he sang it sobeautifully as Tim played.

Mm

TIM RECEtVING THE BALDWIN ELECTRONIC PIANO

... Time now to move this priceless instrument into Melody.Preparation for this meant removing a bolteddown couch! Jerryrealized when Melody's couch was installed it was built insidethe motorhome, or else the motorhome was built around thecouch! A full dayof dismantling and trying to undoscrews thatrefused to budge left Jerry with a f«w doubts of ever getting thecouch out, but being one who rarely gives up, FINALLY at theend of the day and the end of his STRENGTH, he succeeded, and he had it ready in time for the big event. There is no way todescribe what a blessing and asset the piano has been. We praiseGod and thank Him and all who participated in this gift, and formaking it such a portentous day in Tim's life and ours. Curtisand Regina Dickinson came 80 miles from Alamogordo, NewMexico, for the affair. Dinner with them afterwards waspleasurable.

... Had to secure the piano in Melody. Jerry tried to get thescrews he put in as TIGHT as the ones he struggled to remove!... Next major hassle was the newsletter. Our precious friend,Dorothy Eggleston, said, "I'll help." I'm sure she's sorry sheopened her mouth, BUT how grateful we were. A mailing of1700 plus is WORK any way you spell it!

...Melody needed a new compressor in her air conditioner, some new tires, and her usual check-up, and then she said, "I'mready if you are!" She WAITED! We could see that "the hurrierwe went the behinder we got!" Gladshe waspatient. Finally wesaid, "OK, Melody, you take over. We're TIRED, and so shereplied, "Hop in, and we'll be on our way." It was peaceful andquiet now. We had made it out of town again, and it was July26th. We thanked God He saw us through those rather HECTICdays at home.

COLORFUL COLORADO

... July 27. High in the Colorado Rockies now. We had left thehot desert and were amid the COOL mountain splendor andsoon into Montrose, Colorado.

... July 28. Lunch on a huge, blue lake brought peacefulness Jiswe viewed its stillness from Melody's rear window. We realizedso fully the peacefulness that Christ affords us in times when weseemingly go in circles.

... Late afternoon on the 28th, it was great to be in Montrosenow and greeted by the staff of the Montrose Christian Church. Here we were able to renew fellowship with friends from MANYyears back - Bob and Eleanor Eubanks, Jackie and HarryMaroff, Bob and Viola Sullivan, and Harold and Mary Hilkey.Valued time of sharing and expressing our joys for this reunionwere made even more wonderful with all the delicious food! OHMY... and not much sleep either.

... July 29. It was hard again to leave but onward to GrandJunction, Colorado. Friends of 27 years, Forrest and EdytheMae Clodfelter, had shared 50 years of married life. August 1stwas their special day. Having been a tremendous strength, help, and source of encouragement to us in Tim's early years, andclose friends always, we responded with "Yes" when theyasked, "Can Tim play for our anniversary?" We went by theirhome >^dien we got into town and met family and friends. A galaevent for everyone.

... July 30. Seeing many dear friends of years gone by (Welived at Grand Junction from 1956 to 1963.) fdled this day. Ourformer neighbor. Blossom Burke, has always been dear to us,and Tim HAD to go see her! She has been the victim of heartattacks and a brain tumor, so has gotten out little. We said,"Blossom, we're taking you to dinner." "Oh no. My hair looksawful!" Jerry agreed, but said, "Come on any way!!!" Shewent, and what a thrill to enjoy her. Tim almost ate her up. Shealways did, and still does, spoil him.

...July 31. Clodfelter's anniversary dinner. A large, lovelyaffair.

... August 1. Moming was a joyful time at the Clifton ChristianChurch. Again it was good to see so many. Aftemoon was thebeautiful anniversary reception. In the evening Tim presented aconcert for all the area churches. It was a PACKED house, asmany of the people had not seen Tim since he was very smalland could only remember him as he was! It was a mostemotional experience for us all! Tim was elated to see two of hisformer teachers, Dorothy Tindall and Arlene Potter. They, too, were filled with pride. The tears, hugs, and kisses flowed freely, and we then said farewell and followed our friends, Dow andLillian Hough, home. Lillian knows Tim's endless appetite, andat 10:00 p.m. she was preparing dinner. Dow "whomped" upsome hamburgers. Only problem was moming came early!

... August 2. Off to Rangely, Colorado. MORE precious, precious friends. Did a lot of catch-up visiting with George andDorothy Menge, daughter, Shalline, and son, Steve.

... August 3. Evening was filled with the concert and morevisiting with friends, and, ofcourse, food!

...August 5. Hot! Melody was panting in the 113 degreetemperature across the desert and into Las Vegas, BUT shenever complained, even across the mountain passes.

CRUISING THROUGH CALIFORNIA

... August 6. Arrived in southern California. Smog greeted usintensely.

,.. August 7 «&. 8. Our time now with Oxnard, California, FirstBaptist Church. Lots of activity, as we visited the Twin PalmsNursing Home (for the mentally handicapped) on Saturday andthe Lord's Day with the church on Sunday. Frank and HelenTomlinson claimed Tim as their grandson and showered himwith LOVE. Christian hospitality was abundant fromEVERYONE!

... August 9. A reunion with those we love - Bob, Ellen, andKeith Lacy of Camarillo, CaUfomia. There was a newspaperinterview in Camarillo and a radio talk show in Oxnard, andthen we were ready to eat. Ellen took care of that. Time forfellowship then at Chaplain and Mrs. Goodrich's. (He serves theCamarillo State Hospital.) An evening of music and fun. Timalmost pushed their grand piano out the door! He loved it.

Page 20: Baley Gerald Rosemary Tim 1982 International

... August 10. Ellen and Bob Lacy drove us to the VenturaCounty Association of Retarded Citizens Workshop. A returnconcert for Tim and a joy for all of us to go again. TheAssociation of Retarded Citizenspresented him with a check for$500.00 to help defray his music education costs! I wish therewas space to tell you HOW God answered our prayer herethrou^ this event! We enjoyed lunch at the workshop, then wewere driven over to Simi V^ey Workshop. We all had tears as adeaf boy laid his hand on the piano back and rhythmicallystomped his foot (as he felt the vibrations)and grinned from earto ear. His eyes ^stened with tears, and he hugged me. I amspeechless for any further description. A hug for Tim and"Come again, please!" We will, Lord willing.

... August 11. A day we had anticipated for nearly a year. Areunion with Les and Veda Lively whom we've counted asI^ECIAL for 27 years. Their lovely little "Garden of Eden" inO^ai, California, left us with a longing desire to just park Melodyand stay. They even had full hook-ups! Nearly had laryngitisfrom all the talking.

... August 13. A fine concert with the OjaiCommunity Church(Mike Albin, minister), and a time followed in visiting withLively's daughter, Sharon, and her daughter, Leslie Ann.Another night NOT long on sleep!... August 14. Camarillo, Califomia, again, but this time backwith the Camarillo Christian Church (NeU Kuns and CharlieMaloney, ministers). Such a tasty pot-luck chicken dinnerpreceded the concert.... August 15. Today we started out with two services atCamarillo State Hospital. Then after lunch with Lacy's, weleftand didn't get lost as wejourneyed to Northridge,Cdifomia, tothe Cornerstone Christian Church (Vemon Rodgers, minister).Beautiful Martha (Vickers) Jossart and husband, Bryan, treatedus better than royalty. Martha is an El Paso girl, and we sharedso much in a short while.

... August 16. A thrilling surprise at the concert the precedingevening was the presence of John and Wahneta Chase. We havebeen dear friends for many years. An even greater joy was to betheir guests at lunch. Time nowto be on our way to Bakersfield.... August 17. Upon arrival, Herman and Peggy Lippert saw toit we were most comfortable. Melody was snug in theirdriveway. A TV interview was the first thing on the schedule.Tim enjoyed a "singles" meeting.

... August 18. Jerry rousted out of bed and attended a men'sprayer breakfast at 6:30 a.m. with Herman. After he woke up,he enjoyed it. Time for a newspaper interview before theconcert at the University Christian Church and also another TVinterview. Both reporters stayed and covered the concert. Alovely reception followed. Something we had been waiting tosee if it would happen DID!! A young couple were at theconcert who were at the White House July 10 when Tim played. They had hoped to someday meet andhear him again. We had awonderful visit. Ruth (Wheatland) SmUie, a special friend toJerry for many years, was at the concert. We had time to visitwilii her during breakfast next morning. We had parked in thevery SAME mobile home park she lives in two nights before!Had we only known, we waiked right by her home.... August 19. Terra Bella, California, was on up the way andour next stop. The Good ^epherd Lutheran Home is a lovelyfacility for the mentally handicapped. We thrilledat every facetof it - especially the fine caring staff we met and our host,Freddie Gonzalez. A great time with all the residents and staffwas enjoyed at a barbecue. Following this we watched the TVnews coverage of the concert the ni^t before, then soon intothe auditorium and all the residentsgathered for the concert. Itwas nearing bedtime for some, somanywere attiredin theirPPsand robes. Their faces beamed, and a few tears streamed as theyenjoyed so thoroughly every minute of the concert. Avisit wiApublic relations man, Paul Hillman, and we foimd our way toKOA. Trni said, "I'm starved!" We ate.

... August 20. Seems that forever we anticipated going toFresno to be with Hal and EvelynMartin, friends so precious tous. He was Jerry's first teacher of songleading and is still activein assisting in the ministry of the North Fresno ChristianChurch. Rusty Howard, the effervescent young minister, became a deli^tful new friend. The time didn't stand still. Thechurch lot had a most suitable spot for Melody, so we went onour merry way to Hoyt and Margaret Aldrich's home. Theyhosted a lovely buffet, and this evening holds many pleasantmemories. "Tim, you've got to stay with us! We have a privateroom and bath for you," said Margaret and Hoyt. Iii those fewhours Tim leamed these folk were very loving, caring, andspecial friends. Welearned this, too.

... Tim is a borderline diabetic. His thirst is, at times, almostunquenchable. If was 113 degrees, but Tim said, "Please, let mego for a walk." About 4:30 a knock on the door of themotorhome. "Mrs. Baley, Fm Detective . Your son is injail." "JAIL!" I shouted. The story goes like this. (Tim alwaystakes the name and address of chur^ or minister as he walks,BUT this time he got off without it.) He had walked for a longtime in the blistering sun and soon was in desperate need ofwater. He had dways known and been taught the church andpolice are "your friends". We are AT HOME on more churchlots than any other place. He walked and walked in search of aplace to get his drink, but he was in a completely residentialarea. We had told him never to go to strangers' houses! Finally, there was a church, and he went to the door. It waslocked.Theside door was locked, but "OH! A window is open. I can get adrink that way." So son went through the window, got a drink, and left by the door. A neighbor sawand called the police. Timwas visiting in front of the church with a man when the policecame. They told him what he had doneand readhimhis ri^ts.There were 2 policemen - the officer who came to us and hissuperior. The one who came to see us knew v^iien he readTimhis ri^ts that Tim could NOT comprehend. The otherofficersaid he was playing DUMB, Tim had not bothered a thing, theofficer said, just went in and went out afterhe got a drink. The"superior officer" insisted he be taken in. He was and bookedand placed in a cell! We talked with the detective at greatlength. It looked hopeless to get Tim released before Monday (ifthen). To do so, this officer would have to go above hissuperior. He left and took with him our program of Tim'sconcert and some newsletters. He told us to stay at themotorhome till he contacted us. We wanted to get an attomey. He said not to, yet. He left.... We called Rusty andPRAYED!He said, "I'll take care of it." Rusty went to the police station, but before he got there, the officer got Tim out of the cell andbrought him home! We were dumbfounded when we opened thedoor and Tim and the officer were there. This concerned andloving man took it upon himself to release Tim. He said it maygo hard on him, but after talking with us and learning aboutTim, he could not stand having him in a cell. He wrote up a"detention" slip, and Tim's record then was non-existent. Hewas free to be in our custody. The love and empathy this manhad overwhelmed us. We realize there are so many people withprejudices against the retarded. Thank God, Tim had THISofficer. I said to Tun, "That wasa hanowing experience, wasn'tit? Weren't you afraid?" "It was awful, Mom! The cells weredirty, dark and smelly, hot and just awfiiU but even though Iwas hot and cold, too, I could feel a real warm comfortablefeeling. It seemed Jesus had hishand on my shoulder andsaid,Tm with youTim, don't beafraid.', soI knew I would beOK."Letters of gratitude from numerous folk went in the mail to thepolice chief praising the officer. Tim NOW knows, nomatter ifit is a churdi and a window is open, he cannot enter! Prayercalmed us all, and His word again rang within our hearts andminds. Psahn 138:7, "Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou wilt receive me;" and I am so sure Tim was in his heartpraying, "Search me, O God, and know my heart." Psalm139:23. After ALL that, we gathered with Rusty and CaroleHoward and friends and enjoyed chicken.

... August 22. It was a super great day all day long with theNorth Fresno Christian Church, and the evening was closedoutwith Tim*s concert. Then a return to the Aldridges for anafterglow and relaxation. Food? Of course.

...August 23. Early newspaper interview. Then to KelsoActivity Center for the Mentally Handicapped. Joy wasbubbling from within the kids. It is impossible to relate suchexperiences. Lunch with Martin's and then up the highway wedid go.

... As we traveled from Fresno north to our next stop, we hadtime to relax a bit and really enjoy the beautiful scenery. Anight was spent at the foot of towering Mt. Shasta. How peoplecan say there is NO God when their eyes behold such creationFll never understand. The brilliant sun shone on her snow ladencrown ^ving the effect of a huge sundae "dolloped" withwhipped cream. That's beautiful!!

ONWARD TO OREGON

... August 28 was our arrival in Roseburg, Oregon. Again wewere bathed in tremendous Christian hospitality. Melodysnuggled up by the church and was real content, and we madefriends with the Lynnton Elwell's (minister). Tim worked offsteam at the exceptionally nice grand piano.

... August 29. Worship services with the First Christian Church, lunch with Leonard and Hennie Nesseth, followed by a warmvisit. Then it was soon concert time. A great crowd and amongthe attenders was one of our former "boys" who was in ourdorm in Boise, Idaho ~ Mike Peterson. Bless his heart; it wasgreat to see him. Also, Loren Fogliasso, son of Wilma and thelate Charles Fogliasso, college mates of Jerry's, was there. Ittruly is a small world!

... August 30. NBC "Fantasy" caught up with us and wantedto film our family. On to Eugene, and we're booked in this areaby our estimable friends, Kendall and Norma Jean Bauer. Firstoff, a one and a half hour radio "talk show." We talked, andthen it was open line and people called in. There was a lot ofresponse.

... September 1. Home for Melody here was the Garden WayChurch lot. A most dedicated couple, Diana and SteveHolsinger, minister here. We had a large attendance in ourworkshop in the afternoon, and then we prepared for theevening concert and TV interview. The full concert wascoveredby TV, and we watched it on the news that evening.

... September 2. Due now in Myrtle Creek. It was good torenew fellowship with Giimy and Bill Humphries (minister), andwe got there in time to enjoy an old fashioned "corn-feed" inthe park. Former friends from Boise, Edgar and Edna Nichols, live there now, and we rejoiced in seeing them. The concertfollowed the feed.

... September 3. Bill and Giimy sent us off with full tummies, and it was "on the road again." Creswell,Oregon, was our nextstop. Tim went walking, and his eyes beheld the "huge" loglifters. "You enjoy it, Tim, BUT stay away from anythLig andany body!" WeU, when he came back, this euphoric boy couldhardly contain himself. The man who wasworkingthe machineand his wife lived on the premises of the lumber yard. Tim wasrecognized from TV, and they inmiediatelybefriendedhim. Timwas the recipient of a loving demonstration and explanation ofthis monstrous piece of machinery and was shown how tooperate it! They happened to be members of the church inCottage Grove, Oregon, where a concert was pending soon.SteveSchwartz,"the man" as Tim calledhim till he got over theexcitement and remembered his name, will always beremembered by Tim, as well as the felicity of this day! Godbless you, Steve!

... September 5. Back to the Garden Way Church in Eugeneagain. Earlier I mentioned the callfrom NBC and the request tofilm "Fiintasy". We thought this was somewhere in the

FUTURE! Not so, as we were at the Bauer's the week beforethe call came: "We have the crew set to come this(Labor Day)week-end and fUm Tim's concert." I said, "There is NO concertthis week-end!" "Well, can't you arrange for one?" Norma Jeanand Kendall said, "We'll put it all together while you go aheadwith your work," and they DID. We felt that on such a shortnotice it would be impossible, but the Bauer's called their friendwho is head anchorman of ABC (I call this networkcooperation!) in Eugene and solicited his help. He secured thelovely facility of the First Church of the Nazarene in Eugene, and then they announced it on TV and radio. In spite of thespontaneity of it all, it was very well attended. The host churchand minister, Kent Anderson, generously and capably providedall the needs, and things went off as if it had been planned formonths! We had attended worship services at the Garden WayChurch, and when we got out at 12:00, the TV crew wasset upand started filming inside our Melody. I'm sure she must havewondered what was transpiring with the maze of equipment andlights. But her silence gave consent. A few hours later we brokeand gathered around Ae table of Norma Jean and Kendall forfood that had been spread with premeditated preparation. Itwas hurried but delicious, and the quiet time in prayer calmedour souls and spurred us on for that yet to come. Tliere is NOway we could have gotten through ^s day and all it entailedwithout Norma Jean and Kendall. God Imew that, and HIStiming of this event and a few week-ends later again proved tous His PERFECTNESS. We scurried to the church. Hastily, Timdonned his tux, and soon Bob Loudin, our field producer, wasexplaining to the audience the format of what was to come.Much could be said of this aftemoon, but space is a problem. All I can say was it was a joyous, fun-filled aftemoon for allm4io were there and an inspiration, which was the purpose of itall! Upon finishing the concert, we were filmed entering andleaving the church, and then again the crew piled into Melodyand scenes were shot as we drove down the highway, gettingJerry at the wheel, me in my "office" seat (I work as wetravel.), and Tim in his nest at the rear of the motorhomelistening to music, drawing, etc. "Now," said Bob, "if you'll pullover, Jerry, we'll get in the video production van (It wasfollowing us.), and we'll get you on the highway." So out theywent, and soon filming of our "Joumey's end" (brand name ofour motorhome is Joumey) began. Upon completion of that, the van moved to the lane of traffic beside us shooting scenes ofthe side. Of course, traffic piled up behind us (You can imaginesince this was Labor Day week-end.), so the van pulled to thefront, traffic passed, and then it was more of the side shooting. This happened several times. We were more than a little anxiousas the camerman hung his body out of the van! I'll never knowhow he balanced himself and that camera... We were nowbehind the van, and footage continued to be taken as they shotthe front views. Then the van hastened to a freeway exit andstopped in the middle of the overpass. It was now 6:40 p.m. Wedrove under and waved good-bye, and Melody was in full viewof the camera's watchful eye. It was all over, we thought. Whata thrill and wonderful opportunity to give hope to so many onnational TV. We had prayed so eamestiy if tMs ever happenedthat our producer would be a Christian person and realize ourmission is to give Glory to God. The person of Bob Loudin wasa perfect choice.

... September 5, still. We continued now in a reminiscent stateas we traveled into the late evening to camp Wi-Ne-Ma inQoverdale, Oregon. We had planned a relaxing week-end toattend (vacation like) family camp and hear Joe Sutherland, featured speaker. Our plans, as you know, did not materialize, but it was necessary to go on to ^t mail, messages, etc. Wearrived at 11:00 p.m. and immediately Melody's beaming eyesdarkened and so ^d her gleaming inward lights. We all slept! AHARD day.

... September 6. Morning came soon. Sessions followed ahearty breakfast. An aftemoon of rest at this beautiful OCEANcamp was perfect in every way. New acquaintances and renewed

— 4 —

Page 22: Baley Gerald Rosemary Tim 1982 International

friendships continued throu^out a beautiful (weather-wise,too) day.

... September 7. We wanted to visit the Turner Christian Homein Turner, Oregon. What a lovely facility and lovingstaff.,.. September 8 & 9. In Cottage Grove, Oregon. There was anevening concert at the Church of Christ. The Jim Keefe'sminister here. A good night's rest, and then the next morningwas fiDed with giving our workshop. Many parents andinterested people came. We closed with a discussion of problemsin the home, community, and church. We left Cottage Grove, and Boise was to be the next stop.

INTERLUDE IN IDAHO

... September II. Tlie welcome mat was in full view all of ourstay every place we went! It was SO GOOD to be back wherethis had been HOME for three years. Deep and lastingfriendships continued to mature after we left so we were excitedto be here. Lois and John Allen had a lovely, shady spot forMelody. We chattered hours. We thrilled at seeing their son,Steve, and daughter-in-law, Candy, at the TV filming in Eugene.Another surprise!

... September 12. Concert during the morning service at theFirst Church of Christ in Boise. Then lunch at the Boiseretirement center. A concert followed for those who can't getout (and for those who wanted a repeat). That afternoon theAssociation of Retarded Citizens sponsored a city-wide concertheld in the beautiful First Christian Church (Benny Boling, minister). It was well attended even though Kenny Rogers had10,000 people in concert across the street! Tim was elated tosee Billie Johnson (He lived in her home while I was in thehospital in Boise.), who drove nearly 100 miles and surprisedhim. Numerous kids he was in school with in Boise alsoattended. Barbara Lowry, director of ARC, became a closefriend through all the activity.

... September 14. A visit and concert at Boise Bible College andan especially nice visit with friend and former student of Jerry's,John Boberg. Time out to get flu shots. A must, the doctor says, for all of us. No reaction, and we were thankful. We had dinnerwith Dale and Myrtle Christensen. Lowry's were their guests, too. The quiet, relaxing visit halted when the phone rang.Myrtle said, "Rosemary, a call for you." The voice said,"Rosemary, I have some ecstatic news for you, but don't act

TIM W/ITH LISERACE

surprised or react strongly. We of 'Fantasy' have been able tocomplete plans, and Tim's fantasy of meeting liberace will berealized! We are flying the three of you (all expenses paid) toLas Vegas Friday where we will recreate his playing the ^assconcert grand at the Liberace museum, BUT it will be withLiberace present, and he will play a duet." .. And I wasn'tsupposed to show any shock or emotion!!! Fortunately, Timwas not in the same room. I whispered it to those in the livingroom. Well, it was almost chaos from then on. We kept as muchof the schedule as possible for the week in Boise. It wasnecessary to cancel Friday, Saturday, and Sunday morning only.Days of work had to be pushed in at the beginning and end ofWednesday and Thursday as there are some things you can'tignore till later, and we hoped to get word out to as many aspossible concerning the date the program was to be aired. Wegot our act together after the initial news and resumed with theschedule.

... September 15. Tim's special time at his school, where hegraduated from Special Ed. Anticipation of being there andseeing the staff (many srill there) got him up very early. Dr.Parker, superintendent of schools, came, as well as many othereducators and community people. Dr. Parker presented Timwith the "Boise Schools" pin. >^at an honor! Tliis pin is givenonly to those the system holds in high esteem. Tears filled Tim'seyes, and joy flooded his soul. A TV interview followed thefilming of the concert. Another priceless time followed, as welunched with Bessie and Warren Winslow and Pearl and FrankHowerton. Pearl and Bessie are Jerry's first cousins. Though thebodies of all four are weak and in poor health, the spirit waswilling and won out. There was a concert in the evening withthe First Church of Christ, Meridian, and it was again anemotional experience seeing so many dear friends. Dinnerfollowed and hours of wonderful talk with Allen and PeggyStewart. It was about time to get up when we went to bed.

...September 16. Today we did a myriad of things -correspondence, shipment of literature came, and we had insertsheets to put in and folding to do. Late afternoon from theAllen's in Meridian, Melody transported herself and us to thehome of Jim and Mary Hodge in Boise. Enough work we said at7:00 p.m. That makes you dull, so Jim and Mary spiced us upwith Mexican food. Then we conned them into showing usHodge Lumber Yards and Home Center.

A HASTY MODULATION TO NEVADA

... September 17. The mailing we hoped to get done before weleft seemed impossible. Packing, washing, etc. took precedence.Mary said, "Please let me finish it." She and Jerry had workedall day. It was not necessary to ask twice. Luggage was notsomething we had with us in the motorhome. Mary and Jimcame to our rescue. By 4:00 p.m. it was packed, I hoped, andKenny and Martha Beckman gave us a going away dinner andthen chauffered us to the airport. It was a pleasant time to visitwith them, and we could finally say we were ready, and relax. Our flight on Westem was on time and perfect in every way!Oh, our God is SO good to us!!! At 10:15 p.m. a landing assmooth as silk made us fully realize WE'RE HERE! Though ourbodies were tired, no one was sleepy, so Tim's ever activeappetite won out. NBC reserved beau|iful rooms for us at theTropicana Hotel. I felt like "Queen foi, a Day" for several days.

.. .September 18. Acall from the fiejd producer. (Again, wehad Bob Loudin.) "Hi, Mrs. Baley. Everything OK?" "In everysense of the word, YES!" "You're sure Tlti doesn't know?" Iassured him. Our instructions: take a cab at 3:00, and go to themuseum. Tim would be dressed in his tux fo •NBC was going tofilm a re-enactment of last year's experience at the museum. We'll be there.... The cab pulled up, and sve got out. Throughthe glass doors, and then the gracious ladie'.; (hostesses) greetedus. We remembered them fondly from last year. Cameras, lights,

Page 23: Baley Gerald Rosemary Tim 1982 International

and the crew were all about ready. We were greeted by Will, thegentleman who recognized Tim last year. He welcomed us, andthen George Liberace did the same. "Let's film you there asGeorge is welcoming you, and then he will ask Tim if he'd liketo play his brother's glass piano." And so we began. George thenled Tim to the piano, and the production emphasiswas on that.He chose to play what he played last year - "Climb EveryMountain". The audience (tourists in the museum) was allowedto remain. They knew only that a TV program wasbeing filmed. After everything else was fmalized on tape, Bob said, "Tim, thistime DON'T look up at the camera. We do not want your facc.We are only shooting your hands. It is very important you donot look up." Tim assured him he wouldn't. Then Bob said,"Please, audience, absolutely NO sound of any kind! We do notwant the next scene spoiled." The audience did not move. Timplayed on, and he did not move his head. Near the middle of thesong, a door opened, and Liberace came out and down a shallowset of stairs. A thrilling SHOCK was written on every face! ButNOT a word or noise was heard. Tim played on, and Liberacequietly came up behind him. Applause rang out, and especiallyin his ear. Tim stood up to bow, and there he was! Tim's mouthflew open, his eyes misted, and his face was red. None of usremember exactly what he said to him, but most assuredly heexpressed his joy! Liberace congratulated Tim on his playingand asked him if he would like to play a duet. Tim aboutflipped! You know the answer. Liberace said, "Which sidewould you hke to play, Tim?" He pointed to the bass. Liberacesaid, "Fine, I'm a two-sided pianist." The audience cracked up.They sat down and went to it. It was beautiful, and there werefew dry eyes! The SHOCK Tim had and NO rehearsal madeJerry and me wonder how he could handle it. Again, I knowGod gave him all things. He stumbled on a few chords, whichwas excitement, but it did not mar the performance. When theyfinished Liberace presented Tim with an autographed recordand picture. The climax of a special event in the life of a specialboy. There remained one BIG THRILL to come. From behindone of the antique cars and seated on the padded and glasscircular seat, two very special people emerged - Tim'sgrandmother and Uncle Clyde! More hugs and tears of joy.Grandmother planted a kiss on Liberace's cheek and thanked

him for sharing this time with her grandson, Tim. When we toldthe family about the filming, mo&er said how much it wouldmean to her to come. A birthday (Oct. 5 - 87th year) waspending, and this would be a great celebration. Broker Qydedecided to accompany her. It was hard to be in the same hoteland STAY AWAY from each other, but we managed. Qydetook mother back to the hotel for a much needed rest! Somefilming yet remained, and then we bid Bob, the film crew, museum staff, and Lee and George Liberace a fond farewell. Itwas probably the hardest secret Jerry and I ever kept, and Iassure you, none with such a thrill.... Back to the hotel now,and we quietly enjoyed the fabulous Tropicana buffet. Arelaxing walk by Jerry, Clyde, Tim, and me after we saw to itthat mother was safe and secure in her room. Oh, BED feltgood.

TIM WITH GEORGE LIBERACE AND PRODUCTION CREW?

... September 19. We met for breakfast, and then caught a caband attended Central Christian Church. Tim gave a concert herelast year and was asked to play this morning. He thought thiswas one reason we were coming to Las Vegas. The beautifulsanctuary set the atmosphere for the expressions of worshipthat followed. The choir's rendition of "Gentle Shepherd" wasoutstanding. My mind went over and over with its words ~"Gentle Shepherd come and lead us for we need you to guide uson our way." (Psalm 124, especially verse 8 -- "Our help is inthe name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.") BobKroh's sermon brought the realization of this help to its fullest, and we were so blessed by having the opportunity to bethere.... Lunch was enjoyed with a person so dear and specialto us, Esther Slaymaker. Then time to be off to the airport, andfarewell to mother and Clyde.

... A concert that had been scheduled with the Nampa ValleyChristian Church was not cancelled. If our plane returned ontime, we'd make it. We were due in at 5:05. The pilot said it wasrainy. "Oh," I told Jerry. "I hope we aren't late."... Later,"Ladies and gentlemen, we are arriving in Boise 15 minutesearly! Please fasten your seat belts." Another smooth landing, and we were soon at the baggage counter. At 5:03 we were outin front of the terminal as Jim and Mary Hodge drove up. Theywere shocked to see us. The Lord gave us that extra 15 minutes>Adiich made EVERY difference in getting to Nampa on time!He takes care of EVERYTHING, ALWAYS! It was rainy, but afull house and a "high" Tim produced a fun concert. He gavethem the re-enactment of all that happened. I WISHED we hadthat on tape. Lois and John Alien came, and we enjoyedChinese food, and then we said a sad good-bye and drove oninto the night. Then, all of a sudden, we wilted like a flower. That meant the day was overextended. All that had happened inthose past 72 hours seemed unreal. It was beautiful andwonderful! The sparkling piano and museum were dreams cometrue, and yet we know some day an even greater experienceawaits us! Tim says, "I know Jesus will have a white and goldconcert grand for me." I said, "Tim, I'm sure you'll have one,but the trirruning will be pure gold, and the w4iite will be ivory."And so ends this Fantasy, yes, a beautiful dream come true. Weare humbled and grateful (oiall who made it possible!

... September 20. We were amazed to be rejuvenated by thefew hours of sleep, but we were, and the day of driving wasrelaxing and held pleasant memories. There were a few showersoff and on.

WONDERFUL WASHINGTON

... September 21st found our way to a campground that nightdeep in lush woods and foliage in Cle Elum, Washington. AfterMelody wound around the curves getting there, she had onlyone park mate. The tourists either didn't know about it or theywere elsewhere! A QUIET night. Lovely neighbors too, and noone was even in the office.

... September 22. Harvey Pearson, minister, and the congregation were a joy to be with. We were afraid to pronounce thename. You try - Issaquah, Washington.

... September 23. Lake Sawyer Christian Church, in Kent,Washington, is located in a beautiful wooded area. Melody hadfull hook-ups on the church lot. Things were great TILL I nearlycut the whole tip off a fmger and nail just minutes before theconcert! I didn't feel too good. Coated it heavily withNU-SKIN, and it never even got sore! (after the initial cuttingpain left) No charge for that advice. Tiy it! (the Nu-Skin,iV07'cutting your finger.) It was a good concert and great people.Tim was sure Jerry McCornack, the minister, was "Jerry V^e"(pop singer).

. . . September 24. We have never fished and thought anyonewho fished in the rain was odd. I'll eat those words. A lovelyfish farm owned by Lawrence and Dorothy Stoffel, adjoins thechurch property. They keep it stocked to the hilt with goldentrout. "You must fish before you leave." Even (almost) beforeyou threw the line in, they were on it. Lawrence filleted ourcatch. Oh, were they something! Tim all but jumped in thewater when he caught his. Dad and I weren't far behind.Traveling into Seattle now where we met OLD(not so in years)friends, Roy and Andy Stedman. This is a 45 year friendship, and Jerry and Roy were so happy to be reunited. Andy and Isoon became close sisters in Christ. Concert with the church heministers to, Normandy Christian, in the evening. We had tostop visiting with Andy and Roy and get on with the concert. Anearly full house at 7:00 p.m. with numerous friends. A specialone was another Boise "dorm" child, Lisa Lawrence. Oh, it's sogood to see these kids after the many years we had last seeneach other.

... September 26. An early rising for 8:00 a.m. service at theWest Seattle Christian Church, followed by Bible School andsecond worship service. By the time Tim finished playing, he(and we too) was ready when Russell and Barbara Galbreathsaid lunch time at Royal Fork. Other church families met there, and it was a nice time of fellowship. Back to Melody (She hadhad her appetite satisfied earlier.), and Barbaraand Russell camein, and we relaxed before leaving for the next slop. We loved thename, Mountlake Terrace, and how lovingly the Rex Lawson's(minister) greeted us. Our arrival gave us plenty of time to getorganized for the concert at 7:00 p.m.

... September 29. Another gorgeous area - Sedro-Woolley,Washington, and our hosts, the Church of Christ, andspecifically. Ken and June Amold, who minister with thiscongregation. Again, through the grace and favor of generouspeople, we enjoyed a "laripin' good" pot-luck and time forfellowship... Sedro-WooUey and its people are special, too. Timworked off his dinner at the keyboard. What a wonderfulevening for us!

. . . September 30. Breakfast at June and Ken Arnold's, and weturned southward now and back to Mountlake Terrace. Thistime the Lawson's engaged us to visit Fircrest School, aresidential facility for the mentally handicapped. The concertwas at 7:00, and then at 8:30 we went to a prison which had allyoung men. We have so much joy in where we go but sadnessand a sickness in the pit of the stomach NEVER fails to surfaceas we see wasted lives and hurt and angry people. The youngmen appeared void of any interest in being at the concert. Mostsat slouched or arms folded, heads down, bodies turnedsideways, in general showing genuine disinterest. Tim came

down on the keyboard; eyes soon looked to the "Tin-E" piano. It was a doozy! And then they looked at each other, and therewre tapping feet, fingers keeping the beat, and smiles, andbefore long a few ^owed glistening eyes. The look ofdisinterestwas replaced with genuine enjoyment. A big burly "toughie"had moved his body right up by the piano. HE led them withenthusiasm, the rest melted right along. The piano was in suchisrepair it caused Tim a lot of problems, but he got alongbeautifully except for one key that made a most disagreeablesound. Tim shook his head and grinned. The boys clapped, andthe burly boy said, "It's OK, Tim. We're all allowed onemistake, and that's N^y we're here!" Now the tears were in oureyes! To see such a transformation is rare. When Tim finished, they said, "More, more!" Then requests, and to our amazement, they asked for "Amazing Grace" again, and "LivingforJesus."Tim was so loved by the boys. Winter—1982S3RandomReflections...

'Twas early, 6:45 A.M. and Melody had just rounded a bend inbeautiful Oregon. Fog had engulfed us and made the blacknessof the early morning even more mysterious. But THEN, in thefar distance, there appeared the outline of majestic mountainpeaks and there on those peaks. .. . the soft rays of a sunny daybreak. Soon the fog lifted, and the glorious scene (full view ofpeaks) was unveiled in ALL its beauty! We could hardly believewhat our eyes beheld, and my mind immediately thought howthis compares to our lives. We are in the blackness of sin untilwe meet Jesus! Then when we glow as the beauty and light ofthis perfect Saviour penetrates our lives, all the blackness andfog disappear, and we radiate full brilliance of HIS glory. Wehave put on Christ.... The pertinent scripture is Romans13:12-14.

ON WITH MORE HIGHWAY HIGHLIGHTS

... Oct. 2. We generate this NOTEBOOK and continuate (myword) our time in Wonderful Washington. We had such joybeing with Don and June Robinson (McKinley Park ChristianChurch, Tacoma, Wa.). Don planned a week of rich and rewarding activity! Before it started, however, we had to see to it thatMelody was comfortable, so she was nestled right up by thechurch.

... Oct. 3. 1st day. It is Sunday, and we were off with a newfriend, Aletha Luttrell, to the V.A. Hospital (Tacoma) for a10:00 A.M. service. Many patients are permanent residents ofthe hospital. Our hearts ached. . .but we were thankful for thejoy Tim could bring. A young man so severely crippled with arare disease and in a wheel chair cried and with his withered

Page 27: Baley Gerald Rosemary Tim 1982 International

hands and arms hugged Tim and tried so hard to say "tliank-you". Parents of another dying boy were there and literallysobbed. They were inspired and given strength. Back, then, toMcKinley Park Church, and Tim played a preview for theconcert to be held there on Oct. 10. Afternoon to a nursinghome (One that people are sort of put there and forgottenabout.). SAD... Quick trip around Tacoma, Puget Sound, andthe beautiful downtown Tacoma park followed. Tim lovedTacoma, but not the smell! Don told him that was the "TacomaAroma".

... Oct. 4. Western State Hospital, Ft. Steilacoom, Wa. ChaplainHarley had scheduled Tim on many wards, and he played from12:00 to 4:15 with a few minutes break for punch and cookiesoff and on... Energy dwindled. Many wards had not had LIVEmusic or entertainment ever. Even those with profound problems expressed to the best of their ability JOY.

... Oct. 6. Didn't sleep late... Goodwill Industries was scheduled for 8:00 A.M. chapel service. A tour of a lovely facility!P.M. Don chauffered us to Shelton, Wa. A wonderful evening inevery way. It began with tables laden with dishes that looked asif Betty Crocker had been cooking all day! An enthusiasticaudience and full house surely inspired Tim.

... Oct. 7. Us Texans are trying to get used to the liquidsunshine! A sunny spot in a rainy day came as we enjoyed lunchwith one of our "dorm daughters" (at Boise Bible College),Dorothy Chandler Trueblood. On to afternoon concert at GaultJr. High School in Tacoma. Channel 11 of Tacoma covered theconcert and had a nice segment on evening news. Evening hourswere spent at the Northwest School of Missions. What a surpriseto see and visit briefly with former college mates, Gene andAlice Houpt.

... Oct. 8. Over to Seattle late afternoon. We were in the home

of Keith and Chris Lessley for dinner. Another precious "BoiseDorm Daugliter", Lisa Lawrence Sawalla, was co-hostess. Suchfun. A leisurely dinner and then to the Riverton-Glen AcresChurch of Christ for the concert. A standing room only crowd,on a rainy, coldish night, was a surprise. Coldness was onlyoutside, as we enjoyed a period of warm fellowship after...Then back to Tacoma.

... Oct. 10. Today All Day with the McKinley Park ChristianChurch. Tim had been able to enjoy the lovely grand piano allweek as he practiced on it. He told the people "thank-you" theway he played. (And when we left town, the piano was still inone piece!) More pleasant times, an after concert dinner at theRobinson's.

... Oct. 11. Working our way south now. We were behind ahuge logging truck on the Interstate. It was really huffing andpuffing. Melody passed and said "Hi" and before long wewere into Oregon. It was wondrously wonderful to be in Washington!

ON THE OREGON TRAIL

... Oct. 12. A day to let Melody know we truly cared how shelooked. We cleaned her inside —out. Not easy to find time totake care of her needs. Salem, Oregon, our next stop, at theState Penitentiary. Doing OK time wise (We thought.); it was4:00 P.M., due there at 6:00 P.M. THEN, a shocking, loudnoise! Oh my, what was happening to poor Melody. Jerry gotout and found a tire was losing its tread. The freeway waswild... but Melody patiently limped along as the tire whampedher underparts good. Her driver and navigator prayed, "Lord, you know we have a 6:00 P.M. concert. Take care of this, andget us there on time." On down the highway we could see astation. Went in, "Sorry, she's too big for us." Five more milesshe limped. From a far distance I saw the sign and said, "Overthere, Jerry." We pulled right into the truck garage, under thesign that said "TIRES". Wonderful, but no attendant. Scurriedaround and came up with a nice young man. "We are in a BIGhurry, have to be at prison." (He looked at us.) and then I said,"For concert at 6:00 P.M." "Lady, do you realize there isalmost ALWAYS a 3'A to 4 hour wait at this truck stop forANY KIND OF SERVICE?" We said NO, we didn't know thatbut said the Lord took care of our needs. He finished in no time

flat. It was now 5:15. Melody said, "Gee, that sure does feelbetter. I'll make it in fine time." And she did. At 5:50 we pulledinto the gate of the penitentiary, were directed to our parking, and soon met by the chaplain. We said, "Thank you, Melody, and Lord, how we THANK YOU for again doing the impossible(it seemed to us)." Oh, to TRUST HIM and LOVE HIM isexcitingly wonderful! This large, maximum facility was built for484. It holds 1,000 men. Spotless surroundings (floors mopped3 times each day), adequate lighting, beautifully painted halls, with designs painted on the walls — all changed the grossatmosphere we have seen in so many prisons... Tim has amarvelous rapport with the inmates... There were tears flowing when he finished, and as he had them sing "Amazing Grace"along with him (He always does this.), it was a bit much forsome. They truly realized God's grace is for everyone. . . Astrapping big, young man came from behind me and threw liisarms about me and said, "Mrs. Baley, if I had someone to loveme like you love Tim, I WOULDN'T be here." I told him he did,and it was Jesus. He said yes, he was learning. Isn't it SAD hehad to go to prison to LEARN about the love of God? I can'tget over all these young lives so wasted and yearning. . . HOWTHEY THANKED US FOR COMING... We talked a long timeas we left and drove on to Jerry's sister's home. This found us atMt. Angel, Oregon, with Bill and Roberta Phillips. Have toVISIT —it had been so long since we had seen them, but sooneyelids were obstinate about staying open, (Melody had alreadycalled it a day and was snuggled up by their house.) and so wesaid see you in the morning!

FINALLY HAPPY REUNIONS

... Oct. 13. A day of reunion! Jerry's brother, Barney, andwife, Pearl, from Cotati, Ca., came over to Mt. Angel. ITie lasttime Jerry and he saw each other was at their father's funeral in1961! A time of trying to catch up on all those years followed.Jerry, Barney, and Roberta (We call her Bobbie.) cherishedevery precious moment. Bobbie and Bill's daughter and husbandlive in the area, and so we all had a great but far too short a timetogether. The evening followed with Tim in concert at thediurch Bobbie and Bill attend (Woodbum Christian Church) inWoodbum, Oregon, Kurt Hardenbrook, minister. STILL had alot to talk about, so sougjit out a restaurant afterwards. Tworeasons: Tim had worked up his usual after-concert appetite,AND visiting is SO NICE over food! IT GOT LATE!

... Oct. 14. Bamey and Pearl had to return right away to theirhome. Good-bye's —and then we watched the clock for NBC'sFantasy that Tim was to be on with liberace. Bamey and Pearldrove and were going to stop early at a motel to see it. Wewatched with great anticipation! No Liberace and Tim. A phonecall after to NBC said word was sent, but our mail is dwaysseveral weeks late. We did not get it till the next day when ourmail came. Rescheduled for Oct. 22. Tough — the 14th wewere not travelling, the 22nd we would be!

... Oct. 15. Concert at Oregon State Blind School in Salem.Bobbie went along vwth us, and we had a rich experience beingwith tlie staff, some parents, and the children.... Back toBobbie's now, and our time had come to a close to enjoy herand the family. Off to Portland.

... Oct. 17. Crossroads Church of Christ our destination. Theirtreatment to us was SUPER Red Carpet. Besides the gracioushospitality of Tom Burgess, minister, we were surrounded bymany dear OLD (not years) friends. There were a myriad ofunforgettable, treasured memories all week-end with Bob andRosemary Ballard, Barbara and Jo Totemier, Steve and CandyAllen and kiddies, and another "Boise dorm daughter", CindyTaylor Sanders. This vibrant, progressive church had a hugecrowd, and excitement was like electricity all through the concert. Tim came out covered with lipstick! He loved every kiss. Then 3 lovely young people said, "We are your cousins." "Can'tbe," we said ... BUT here they were, children of Jerry's cousins! What a wonderful surprise, and truly this is a SMALL world. Wewere in a daze from the fullness and joy of the events, but thatdidn't keep us from a good night's sleep and great anticipationof things yet to come.

... Oct. 18. Up and at 'em (the freeway traffic, that is), andchauffer Bob Ballard soon had us down at the Portland TV

Channel 8 (NBC) studio. A pleasant and relaxing interview andthen back to Melody. She had to go get her new slipper (TIRE).Wish they cost the price of a slipper. That took time! ITie manat the garage called all over Portland to get one and finallysucceeded. Eager to be on our way downtown for a brief stintvidth Jerry's cousins, Beulah Malone and Arlena Salmans. Wemade it. (They didn't think we would.) Had a delightful dinner, visit, and tour of their lovely apartment house. From its toproof garden, our eyes beheld Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Hood. Thespiraling peaks were laden with snow, and the atmosphere wasabsolutely perfect to glean it all in. A little visit was better thannone, and so we thanked God for allowing us this brief time. Onthen, down the highway,

WHAT A FELLOWSHIP!!

... Oct. 19. Sweet Home, Oregon, would certainly never be aplace we could forget! Earl Chambers, minister of Highway 20Church of Christ, and the congregation there have an outstanding TV station in connection vdth the church. They asked if wewould come and do some taping for them. It was our pleasure.Earl and his daughter, Earlene Wolfe, took us to dinner, andtaping began at 7:00 P.M. The TV crew are people from thechurch who work regular jobs and donate their time, so it is alldone evenings. It wasearly morning before they finished the job"Well Done". They CANNED Tim in many songs and didpatriotic and Christmas series, I said, "Too bad, Tim, we can'tkeep you in the can." Well, finished up for now, but we will becoming back to Sweet Home for more.

... Oct. 20. Travel to Florence, Oregon, was picturesque andleft us mesmerized! I told Jerry the Lord surely did train JackFrost to be a perfect artist. Tlie fall colors were now at their

peak, and I can not describe the beauty — except all that coloramid the pines was breathtaking. Arrived safely at FlorenceChristian Church, Stuart West, minister. Chicken dirmer beforethe concert was par excellant, as was the attendance and experiences of the evening. Jerry had a nice chat with friend (ofLONG standing) Jim Smith. The lovely rain did not dampen thespirits, but I was cold.

FANTASTIC EXPERIENCES

... Oct. 22. Heading now back through Sweet Home to PowellButte, Oregon. Today is the Fantasy TV program Tim andLiberace were to be on. MUST stop some place to see it. Ah, amotel would surely let us sit in a room and rent a TV for JUSTone hour. "There's a motel," I said to Jerry. Pouring rain, so Isaid I would run in and see if he could drive up as close aspossible. Our grave need was laid before the desk clerk. She litup like a Christmas tree. "Oh, Honey, you've GOT to see this onthe BIG screen in the lounge," I assured her a room would bejust great. She picked up the phone and motioned for me to getgoing to the lounge. She said, "I am callingMelissa and makingarrangements. This is so exciting." I could see there was NOchanging her mind, so went and got Jerry and Tim. We enteredthe lounge. Not a soul around, except beautiful, little, blondhaired and blue-eyed Melissa. We thought, "Oh, this won't bebad. We won't be bothering anyone, and it would be QUIET."Melissa, absolutely thrilled to pieces about it all, said, "You goand have your lunch and come back, I'll have everything allset." At 1:45 we went back (Program was at 2:00.), and to ouramazement the lounge was FULL. People were at the bar, andthe TV was loud.We thought, "OH,NO!!" Melissa spottedusandsaid, "There are your seats, RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE BIGSCREEN." Well, I went over and told her we would leave andgo to a room as we couldn't hear with all the people. (They hadgreeted us royally when we went in.) Melissasaid, "Oh, they arehere to watch too!" I about fell over. Melissa had been givenone of Tim's concert programs. Her boss took it and startedaround the motel, and people came. When Tim came on, youcan not imagine the dead silence that came over that place. Wesaw tears sparkling in the dimmed lights, and THEN, whenLiberace came out and surprised Tim, they were exuberant. Theduet they played brought sniffles and tears, and I thought froma few we were going to have a flood. WHY, oh WHY, did theymake it so short were their only remarks. Tim was mobbed andcheered when it ended, and little Melissa said, "Mrs. Baley, please, if you would have it, I'd cherish another concert program." I said, "Of course!" The others chimed in, "US TOO!"Jerry traipsed out in the downpour and brought programs andthe last 3 issues of Baley's Notebook for all of them to have.Tim did the autographing, we bid farewell, and as we reflectedon the afternoon's experience, we marvelled at how God hadput us there at that time, and we THANKED HIM AGAIN forthis experience.

... Oct. 22 (cont.). Looking for a doctor now! "Can't hear.Mom. I think I have a piece of cotton from a Q-Tip in my ear."That's all we need! Melody pedalled FAST to Sweet Home sowe could find a doctor. Called our friends, the Chambers. NOANSWER. Picked a doctor out of our hat and left Melody safelyat the curb. The doctor took care of the potato crop in Tim'sear! (Not really, wasn't cotton or potatoes, just wax against thedrum.) Jerry had to return to the motorhome while we werewaiting, and as he came out, a fella came up to him from aservice station nearby and said, "Hey, I just saw you on TV alittle bit ago." Jerry was amazed!

Page 31: Baley Gerald Rosemary Tim 1982 International

... Oct. 23. Too late to go on last night when we got out of thedoctor's office, so Home Sweet Home was Sweet Home thatnight. This morning Melody patiently guided us safely across thebeautiful Cascade Mountains. COLD, but it never snows, theysay, till later in November. We eagerly anticipated our visit toPowell Butte, Oregon, and at 4:00 P.M. we were there andreceived a warm-hearted welcome from D. L. PennhoUow, minister of the Powell Butte church. Tim LOVED "Penny", thebeloved minister of this congregation that he has served for 40years! We absolutely could not imagine HOW a church survivedout there and where the people came from. Still don't know, except must be out of the woodwork! Anyway, what a terrificplace and people and preacher. I told Jerry the highway that ledto it looked like a "woolly worm" had wiggled its way acrossthe muddy mountain and a paving machine followed.

... Oct. 24. Beautiful day in every way, and it ended, after theevening concert, with a quiet time around a table. (A good visitwith Penny and Cecil, who liveswith him, and vittles.)

WHOOPS!!!!! WINTER ARRIVES

... Oct. 25. A couple of days to catch up on WORK! Decidedwe'd stop and stay in beautiful Sisters, Oregon. Nice park, beautiful area, BAD WEATHER. Well, tomorrow should bebetter, they said. Not so. Same thing forecast next day ~ morerain, cold, and in the Cascades there was snow. Well, that wasn'tfor us OR Melody. What to do?? Jerry went to the office andchecked with the Highway Patrol. "You can get out about noonwdien bla^k ice gets off. It isn't snowing now." That didn't makeus feel really relaxed! Decided to go as we had to be in SweetHome Thursday evening or Friday moming fairly early. Melodysaid, "Let's go." WELL, it was snowing, and the mountain was abeautiful winter wonderland. The black ice was gone in mostspots, but beware, it does snow in the Cascades before November. Ha! Melody and the Lord surely took the situation in hand, and we thanked them.

NEVER A DULL MOMENT

... Oct. 26. Weather didn't know what else to do, so just keptraining, and to our surprise, the Cascades had considerable iceand snow. Sure good we went across when we did. Weheard onthe news that evening the pass was closed and remained in thatstate off and on all week-end. Again, we thanked God for Hisleading and our safety!

... The days that followed were busy with more TV taping andoffice work. We grew to LOVE the Sweet Home, Oregon, people so very much. They are truly some of God's greatest. They kept us hopping, and we loved eveiy minute. Tim fell inlove with one very precious person.Earlene Wolfe (Mrs. Gail) isthe minister's daughter. A special time was filming of duets (Sheon organ and Tim at the piano) for the TV segments. AuntRuby (my sister who passed away) did this with Tim, and heloved it and has missed it. When Earlene asked if he could do it,Jerry said, TRY. We really did not know. It went just beautifully, There were times of feasting with the Chamber's, Wolfe's,the Robertson's, and the final "after-concert let down" (and fillup) with the Edward's. I wish each of you could see theabsolutely ELEGANT rock house they enjoy! It was simplybreathtaking. Everything inside is designed in rock. Impossibleto describe or comprehend. Seeing is believing however. Theygave Tim a rock. A treasured cross-stitch piano picture was alsogiven to him by Earlene. He guards it with his life. So manywonderful items have been given to him with such love —we areabout to start a museum. Melody sort of gets loaded down, butshe never complains!

... Oct. 31 was the day of the concert at the Highway 20Church of Christ. It was a packed house with people standing, and a vibrant spirit. As I said above, we were at ^e Edward'safter the concert, and it was late... till we got home!

... After the concert Ron Strubhar asked Tim if he would like

to go to the mountains in his diesel truck to get a load oflumber early the next moming. I was sure Tim would say no ashe is sudi a sleepyhead. Nothing would ever keep him fromgoing in a DIESEL, I do believe. The set time was 5:15 A.M.

...Nov. 1. Jerry set the alarm earlier than ordinary as wethought we'd have such a time getting him up. At 4:15 it wentoff, he was out of bed before his dad had it shut off, and wasdressed and watching out of the window waiting on Ron by4:30!!! Wonders NEVER cease. He became pretty tired byevening and said, "I didn't sleep very well last night. I was afraidI would miss Ron'" He'll never forget Ron and the trip to themountains, but mostly the diesel truck! We enjoyed breakfast, awaiting their retum from the trip, with Ron's parents, the WesStrubhar's. Such a relaxing and pleasant way to end a simplyglorious week in Sweet Home. We had lumps in our throats aswe said good-bye and went down the highway thinking of thesong "Precious Memories". Grants Pass, Oregon, stop-over thisnight.

BACK AGAIN IN SUNNY CALIFORNIA (sunny for awhUe)

... Nov. 2. Long trip today. "Get moving," Melody said, "so Idon't have to hurry." On our way by 6:00 A.M. in the fog. After daybreak (and coffee break) the fog gave in, and it wassmooth sailing. Mid-aftemoon we were safe at our destination,Oroville, Ca., and were greeted by the minister of the OrovilleChurch of Christ, Dewain Amold, and to our surprise, K.O.Backstrand, a friend of days dating back to our Colorado days(Tim was a baby then.) was at the church when we arrived. Hewas as surprised as we were. He ministers to the ChristianChurch in Paradise, Ca Dinner with Dewain and the evening's events left us with "fullness of heart".

... Nov. 3. K.O. said yesterday, "Are you doing anything tomorrow night?" Jerry said, "No." "Well, would you come overto Paradise? There might not be a big crowd, but it would begreat to have you. We'll get the word out." THAT THEY DID,and with the help of a local radio station, the church wasnearlyfull. Jerry had a surprise and a bonus! Lew Moore, a belovedbrother in the Lord from Jerry's days as a youth in SanBemardino, now lives in Paradise and attended the concert.

Yes, this day and all of itsevents were truly unexpected blessings God had given us. Oh,yes. Paradise is truly Paradise. Beautiful!

... Nov. 4. On our way to San Jose. Upon arrival found thisdty has a "thing" about RV parks. THERE AREN'T ANY!After hours of seeking, calling, and reaching the point of justforgetting the next concert and going on, a kind man (We finallydid find a kind man.) said, "Go to the fairgrounds." Well,it hadhook-ups for Melody, and with it went mud, flies, ruts, and an

.. . Nov. 5. A much more pleasant experience was ours the nextday as we were at San Jose Bible College. Tim gave a concertduring the chapel hour. We were glad we did not give up infinding a place to stay. Our time with the college was a greatexperience.

.. . Nov. 7. The remainder of the time in San Jose was with the

Eastside Christian Church. Melody had her usual place to rest— right up beside the church building. Things were OK fromthen on. Tlie weather was not very pleasant this week, but ourtime with the Eastside Christian Church was. New friends were

made and among them, the minister and his vwfe, the EddieDeVries. Another standing room only concert and time offellowship after. Dear friends of Jerry's from his days of his firstministry in Escondido, Ca., were there, the Leonard Scott's.What a wonderful surprise... It was very cold... Melody developed a problem — her furnace. NO HEAT.

... Nov. 8. Had to get Melody's furnace mended. FINALLY, ondown the coast. Getting late, so stopped in Aptos, Ca. Oh, it isspectacular. Right on the ocean. Quite a contrast to the fair-

... Nov. 9. RAIN, COLD... NO HEAT. The mechanic didn'tdo good by Melody.

... Nov. 10. Referred to another garage.Hope that is the end ofthe problem. Due in Salinas, Ca., (First Christian Church, DavidBeavers, minister) by evening. Not far, and there by mid-afternoon. New experience seeing the Artichoke Capital of theWorld and the Steinbeck Mansion. Still cool, no rain though.Concert was well attended.

GOD'S HANDIWORK

... Nov. 11. As we were heading south, everyone said, "Takethe drive to Monterrey Peninsula." (It's called 17 mile Drive.)We are glad we were told to do it, and if you are ever in thearea, don't miss it. We are not sure what Melody thought of allthat she experienced that day as it was up and down, round andround, for that 17 miles, and then the 74 miles following weretruly ineffable. How anyone can ever doubt there is a God andHis creation I find it harder and harder to believe as we travel.

... Nov. 12. Nestled back in the inland area is beautiful Atasca-

dero, our next stop. Arrived at 2:00 and concert at AtascaderoChristian Home was at 3:00. We had dinner with the residents at

5:30, and then at 7:00 there was a concert at the AtascaderoChristian Church. (Charles Gard and Terry Butler ministerthere.)

... Nov. 13. Breakfast with the Butler family and then ourfarewells. On down the coastal highway, drinking in all itsbeauty.

... Nov. 14. Into the LA area now. Melody just buzzed rightthrough all the traffic. Lawndale Church of Christ had a niceparking spot, and the staff made us very welcome. A beautifulreception followed the concert, and we value these times so verymuch.

GOOD TIMES AND GOOD FRIENDS

... Nov. 17. Our friend of so very many years, Wibna Fogliasso, wrote and asked if we would be able to givea program for theirSr. Citizens Thanksgiving Dinner at the Anaheim First ChristianChurch. Our answer was we would be glad to. We arrived inplenty of time to enjoy visiting with the people. The tables wereso beautifully decorated, and the dinner was fabulous. Up untilthis time I was really unaware that the holidays were justaround the comer. Mid-aftemoon we drove over to FountainValley, Ca., to the Fountain Valley Christian Church. Theyasked us to please come back the next time we were in the area. This was the day, and we eagerly awaited the time. Ourfriends, Art and Janet Reece, are so dear to us, and we lookedforward to seeing them and their sons again. Sandwiched in avisit over dinner, and then back to the church for the 6:30concert. These people truly ahve a wonderfully warm love forTim, and he reciprocated. After the concert, back to Art andJanet's, and time for catch up on all that happened this pastyear.

... Nov. 18. Coffee and donuts and good-bye to Art and Janetand his lovely secretary, Kathy. A hard fall awhile back had putme nearly out of commission. Back pain wasbecoming unbearable. The big questions was had I cracked a fusion. Seemedtheinevitable had arrived. I had to see a doctor. Ended up at the St.Jude Orthopedic Hospital in Fullerton, Ca. The Lord gave us afine doctor. The fusion appears all rigjit, but go home and seeyour doctor. Medication helped to get through the rest of thetour.

... Nov. 21. It was a free Sunday morning, and we spent it withour dear friend, Elsie Gatcomb, and we visited the HUGECrystal Cathedral in Garden Grove! All we could say was,"MY!" We thought it was beautiful. Many people do not feelthat way... We would all agree on one thing — it is different!Lunch with Elsie and then to Eastside Christian Church inFullerton, Ben Merold, minister. Concert at 4:00 and receptionfollowed. Only had time to greet the people as it was off toGarden Grove Qiristian Church for 6:00 P.M. concert. Made itin time (5:50). Ken and Arlene Munson (minister) shared delicious Mexican vittles after, and it was good to relax.

... Nov. 22. Had to have some time with our friends, Don andMinnie Mitchell, and it seemed breakfast was the best. Then thetime came we had to get moving and find a service center to getMelody's Freon refilled and other items taken care of, such asbrake shoes! (Ouch — it isn't her shoessaying ouch. 3 guesseswhat I mean.)

... Nov. 23. A day of office work and Melody work, and closedit out with a fresh salmon dinner (from the BeringSea) at Donand Minnie's. Don caught it himself. We felt so honored theywould share such a tasty morsel with us.

... Nov. 24. Joumey today was to Riverside, University Christian Church. Tim was to give a concert for their ThanksgivingEvening Service. Thiswas another day we were eagerly awaiting.Del and Lavem Parks serve this congregation. They were students of Jerry's back in 1952-54. We had not seen them since. What a reunion! Another friend, Orville Park, whom we knewmany years agoin Needles, Ca., now lives there, and also comingto the concert were Jerry's cousins, Nela (and her husband, MelFlanery) and Ebiora Hansen, and Bill Behm. After a pleasingreception, we followed Mel and Nela to their home in Romo-land. Made Melody comfortable in their spacious backyard andthen caught up on family news.

... Nov. 25. Mel got a blue ribbon for his Chef-ly duties, andbreakfast was superb. This was such a wonderful Thanksgivingday. We are rarely ever with any family for any holidays. Nelabusied herself for weeks, I am sure, and what a beautiful dinnerwith Mel, Nela, Elnora, and other friends of theirs. Thoughtsofthis day are as keepsakes.

... Nov. 28. Back with the University Christian Church inRiverside. Tim gave a mini-concert, and we presented a briefresume of our work during the morning worship service. Meland Nela journeyed back here, and after services a group gathered at a nearby restaurant to celebrate their wedding anniversary. It was a delightful time, but had to move on. Our jaunt tonext stop was easy. Arrived at Crossroads Christian Church inCorona. Tim Coop is the effervescent senior minister of thisprogressive, growing congregation. His enthusiasm is contagious.Tim and Sharon Elkins and numerous other folk had workeddiligently to promote the concert. It was so very well receivedby a full house. A time of discussion followed in Sharon's homeon the program of the mentally handicapped in the localchurch. It was an excellent time of sharing and fellowship.

... Nov. 29. Tim calls her Aunt Wilma, and she is dear to us. Afamily friend for many years. Aunt Wilma Roddy lives inRiverside and came to the concert last night. We had to havemore time than that, so breakfast at Denny's was great. Thetime was a treasure.

... Nov. 30. Been lots of storms all around... After we had

left the San Jose area several weeks ago, there were terriblestorms. Tonight we were back in the Anaheim area. Beingabsolutely dead to the world, we pulled into an RV park.Melody, and those she so patiently hauls around, had lights out

and in short order "not a creature was stirring" inside, but, ohmy, outside the wind wasgoing crazy. We awoke in the morningto find a tree on top of a motorhome (three to our right)and 3trees uprooted 4 to our left! We slept through it. Not sure ifthat was good or bad. All I can say over and over, we thank Godfor His CONSTANT protection.

... Dec. 1. 10:00 A.M. concert at convocation service of Pacific

Christian College in FuUerton. As we were leaving and walkingto the motorhome, Ike Albers caught up with us and said, "Areyou busy tonight?" We told him no. He asked if we would gowith him to the First Christian Church in Long Beach, and ofcourse, we were glad to. End result. Tim gave a concert and wasoverjoyed at the beautiful grand he had to play on. It is a classicinstrument vinth much history. He said, "Wasn't it just great Igot to play that piano?" The Kenneth Stewart's, Ransom Hess, and Mrs. Rueben Anderson were all there, and it was such asurprise to us. An unplanned evening, but truly a blessing for us.

... Dec. 3. The Awards Dinner for the Ventura County Association of Retarded Citizens was to be held this evening. Tim wasto present a concert. It was held at the Officers Club at Pt.Mugu, Ca. (near Camarillo). It was good to go back there forthis special time for them. Having been there several times, thebonds of friendship have grown so strong. It is sort of like goingback home! It was a beautiful but very "emotional" evening. Our purpose was to give hope to the parents of handicappedchildren, and of course, to encourage the staff members whowere there. Tim was beginning to not feel well by late afternoon, but went on with the concert, and HOME to HIS bed atBob, Ellen, and "buddy" Keith Lacy's. He has a "His room" intheir house, and how he loves those people. (We do too.)

"AMIGOS " GALORE AND LOTS, LOTS MORE!

.., Dec. 4, We savored the time and the breakfast with Ellen,Bob, and Keith, and soon were on our way to Hemet, Ca. Wepulled into the church lot and set up in "Grand Style" in thedriveway. Then, behold, who did we see but two very, veryspecial people — the Fred Haller's from Escondido, Ca. Theyvranted to hear Tim again so drove that long distance of about75 miles. We were STUNNED. These people were guiding sta-biUty to "Young Jerry" as he began his ministry in Escondido,Ca. (I won't say how many years ago.) I have one regret — thatwe were not married then, and I did not share those days. I havefelt so privileged knowing them, though, all these years andloving them. We went to dirmer together and had such a nicetime. Hm lost his voice almost entirely but struggled to go eat!!Almost didn't make it though. Ministering to the Hemet ValleyChristian Church is Maurice Williams. Again, what a reunion forJerry and Maurice. They last saw each other in Bible collegeabout 40 years ago. Mel and Nela lived nearby, so they came(faithful fans) and brought friends. Tim did make it through, but was far from being on top physically. It was a glorious time, followed by strawberry sundaes, cookies, etc. We were simplybubbling with such blessings. There is NO WAY we can everthank God for all HE has done for us. His family loves and caresfor us everywhere!!! The last surprise at this church was DovieKing, whom we knew back in Compton nearly 30 years ago andA\diose daughter-in-law babysat Tim, was there. We had lostcontact with them all these years. Dovie most recently lost herprecious husband but with God's help is adjusting.

... Dec, 5. Sunday morning. Tim stayed in the motorhomeuntil time for him to play during church. Voice is almost gone.Sure QUIET. We visited briefly with many over lunch, then offfor Yucca Valley, Ca. The last concert of this tour! We prayedTim would make it. Feeling really bad. Arrived in good time.

Another BIG surprise. Ken Stadtman from Vista, Ca., camethrough the line after the concert. For a minute we could notthink v^o he was and where we were. These surprises are thegreatest but surely confuse an already confused person. Ken andJerry were boyhood friends and have remained such always. Afervent and zestful audience was what Tim needed to getthrough the concert this night! He HAD it.... Those peopleshowed such admiration, warmth, and love. He was drainedv^en he finished, but I do believe it was one of his best concertsever. Many gathered at a local restaurant, and we shared anotherwonderful time of being with such precious people. We felt alittle sad! Leaving what seemed awful special friends, and yet, sonew (except for Ken), but this ended our trip that had startedlast July... Couldn't possibly sleep after such a wonderfullyeventful day, so Melody said, "Let's be on toward ElPaso!" and so at 10:15 we started driving into the blackness of the night, but God had placed the moon and stars in thesky. So beautiful, just as the experiences of these many pastmonths have been. Well, it was 1:15 A.M., and Melody said,"I'm tired. How about you, driver?" Reply was a sleepy nod.

HOMEWARD BOUND

(And Finally, El Paso At Last)

... Dec. 6. Enough rest for Jerry. Melody wasn't so sure, butdidn't complain. So at 6:00 A.M. the joumey continued. Intime I got awake, but poor Tim hardly knew there was aMonday. He awakened long enough to take a pill and drinksomething off and on all day. That was all. We arrived home at10:30 P.M. The speedometer registered 8907 miles since we leftin July, and all of them without harm to us or anyone else. Thisis, and always will be, our prayer. Will you pray the sameprayer?

... Etec. 7. Moming came before noon, but we were hardlyaware of it. We slept. Just in tovm briefly.

... Dec. 8. Weather has been bad. Still is bad. RAIN.

YOU TAKE CARE OF US,LORD!THE T1EXAS TOUR

... Dec. 9. Tim's lessons in Corpus Christi next thing on agenda.Raining hard, needed to leave early. Left at 10:00 A.M. Did notcall highway patrol — just thought it was raining. About 75miles out the rain turned to sleet Ice was forming on thewindshield. THEN A HARD KNOCK. The slick highway wasnot easy to stop on. Jerry inched to the side of the road. WhatWAS the NOISE? Nothing could be seen. Back in. As he lookedin the side mirror, the aerial banged against Melody, and it wasladen with ice! A MESS. We went so slowly — about 35 to 40miles an hour. Soon the avi^ul sleet was snow. T^en the slushyhighway turned to ruts of ice. We had hoped to go half way ormore. Well, 250 miles seemed around the world. We would finda place, we hoped, in Fort Stockton. A little while before wegot there, another awful noise. Still raining, and some snow. Thenoise? Well, the road was so rough and bumpy after all the iceformed that it jiggled Melody's exhaust pipe loose! Noise and allwe went rolling into the KOA campground. Lots of others gaveit up for a bad cause. Grounds nearly full. In the mud, cold, andrain, Jerry crawled under the motorhome to try to fix it, butcouldn't. Forecast: More of the same tomorrow Our prayer."Lord, you know we have to be in Corpus Christi for Tim'slessons, TV interviews, and concert. We are leavingit all in yourhands." We decided to get up early to see if it was raining orsnowing. Before we had gone to bed, it was also very foggy.

Page 35: Baley Gerald Rosemary Tim 1982 International

HE DID!!!

... Dec. 10. Amazing. No rain. Foggy, but not terribly dense.Pretty warm to what it had been. We hurried and got ready andthen asked for a place to get Melody to the doctor. Advised andwent. Fella saw her, and then said, "Sony, she won't fit in mygarage." He directed us to another. We were so afraid of thebill... The Lord heard a lot about that, too! No one ahead ofus, and they went right to it. Shortly, it was all done. The bill— $10.00. We praised God from whom all blessings flow.

... Dec. 10 — later. Travelled on for some time. Decided tocall Corpus. "Where are you?" asked Fred McWhorter. I toldhim, and then he relayed how they had been praying, knowingthat we must be in the storm some place. I told him we knewsomeone was praying.

...Dec. 11. Arrived in Corpus at 12:00 noon. Safely andthankful! TV interviews were scheduled at 3:30. Red Camp(Tim's teacher) cameover for them, and we had a nice, but briefvisit. It was a very nice segment shown on the news thatevening. We had a lovely dinner with Fred McWhorter and hislovely wife, Dorma, who minister to the New Testament Christian Church. All that was disagreeable in the elements now wasthe wind, but it wasn't bad, just cold.

... Dec. 12. Jerry preached for the morning service, and Timplayed a preview for the evening concert at 6:00 P.M. Friends,Helen and Gene Bream, and others from Mathis, Tx., churchdrove over. It was such a pleasant evening. Christmas goodieswere so tasty after.

... Dec. 13 & 14. Reunion with the Camp's, and then hours ofhard work followed, both days, for Red, Tim, and Jerry. Alvisand I caught up on all that had happened in the past 6 months, and we also solved all the problems of the world. It's alwayshard to leave these priceless friends, but we had to.

... Dec. 15. A return engagement in Lockhart,Tx. Dinner v/ithDon and Georgia George, then to the First Christian Church andthe concert wasat 7:30.1 wishyou could have seen the front ofthe church as it was banked in huge, perfect poinsettias. It was asight to behold. These gracious people also spread a beautifultable of Christmas cookies, cakes, etc. Gary Dudder, minister, isa favorite of Tim's.

... Dec. 16. Breakfast with our Don and Georgia, then on toBelton, Texas. At 2:00 P.M. met Bob and Bemice Cox at theCentral Texas Christian Church. Bob, the minister, had arrangeda TV interview and shortly the crew was there. Tim had a jollytime with them and they with him. It was an excellent piece ofadvertisement for the concert and produced results. We followed Ann and Edna (her mother) Bettencourt home. Melodycould choose almost any place to park in the vast area aroundtheir home. Ann, Edna, and Edna's other daughter, Becky, andher husband, Philip, used to live in El Paso. We were so glad forthe opportunity to have some time with them. Becky is also agourmet cook par excellant. We arrived home after the concertto the most fabulous chicken dinner! It was served with everything that goes with a full dinner. We finished eating at 11:30.We said we would be leaving very eariy and would be sayinggood-bye now! They all said, "No! We have to have breakfasttogether!" "NOT after all this food!!!" "Yes, Becky has it allplarmed."

... Dec. 17. Well, at 5:45 A.M. little Becky and her sister, Ann,had fixed another feast... Let me tell you if you are ever luckyenough to eat in her gourmet kitchen, YOU WILL NEVERFORGET IT. We had a tearful farewell and were so thankful forthis priceless time together. As we were about to pull away,Ann

knocked on the door of Melodyand said, "Beclqr almost forgot. She has food to send with you." Becky has no idea the blessingthat was for us the night we arrived back in El Paso. MotherHubbard's cupboard was bare (in the house), and there wasn't alot more in tiie motorhome. TTiank you, Becky, for saving myday!

... It was a good day of travel, and we kept plugging away atthe 650 miles that were ahead of us, and at 10:00 P.M. wearrived home, thankful to be there again, and above all, gratefulfor all the Lord had allowed us to do and for keeping us in thepalm of His hand.

...Dec. 18. A day of NOTHING. Seemed to have a TRIPHANG OVER!

HIS WAY TO SAY "THANKS"

... Dec. 19. Tonight Tim was able to say THANK YOU toHorizon City and El Paso residents who contributed to his pianofor the motorhome. A thank you concert had been lovingly andcarefully planned. It was arranged for the performance to begiven in the large dining room at the Horizon City CountryClub. A simply elegant buffet was planned by the managers ofthe club. It was a packed room and an extremely responsivegroup. Tim could feel the love and vibes. Nothing more needs tobe said, except I wish all of the contributors could really realizethe blessing the piano has been to all of us... It was a climacticend to the 1982 concert season. Simply perfect in every sense ofthe word. Again, a very special thanks to Veny Webb andhusband. Herb, who initiated the piano fund and carried itthrough; to the Lloyd Sapp's, and to the Country Club for suchgracious hospitality and the beautiful meal. You are specialmanagers. The gift that God has given Tim was like electricitythrough many people in that audience.

... Dec. 20. The doctor says (about my back) will try someinjections, medicine, and rest. I vote for the first two. Rest ishard to come by.

... Dec. 22. 32nd wedding anniversary. Weather almost as badas the day we were married. That was in Ohio We are inSUNNY EL PASO. Or are we???

... Dec. 23. Christmas decorations are few and far between in

our house. Think a few candles, etc. will suffice if Jerry and Timagree... They agreed.

THERE MUST BE A MISTAKE!

... Dec. 25. Can hardly believe this stuff all over the ground isreally snow. Think we must be someplace else.... Not sothough. 7 inches of the white stuff. People go crazy. Truly aWHITE Christmas.

... Dec. 31. Another 5 inchesof snow made El Pasoimpossible.Everything cancelled — HOME is the best place And soends 1982.

Ourtime in El Paso now is unbelievably busy. The greatest shareof it will be spent in office work. Getting the tour lined up for1983 is a monumental job. We vwU have a few concerts in andout of the city, and in late February and March into Arizonaand New Mexico and a "FLYING TRIP" to San Jose, California. (See Schedule.)

Today as I have finished writing this, my Bible was open toMatthew 11:28-30. "Come unto me, all ye that labor and areheavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you,and leam of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shallfind rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burdenis light." Sometimes we begin to feel weary and heavy-laden,but then, as the scripture says, "You shall find rest for yoursouls." HOW VERY TRUE. This past year there were times wewere weary, but He supplied our every need. Anticipation of1983 is for a busier year than last, and we praise God that Hecan and will use us. To each of you we say THANK YOU for1982. Your prayers for us personally, for our safety and health, for MELODY, and for supplying our needs financially. We haveseen: a vivid awareness being bom for a greater acceptance andlove of the mentally handicapped: churches saying: we want totake a responsibility; Parents encouraged; and many realizingwhat the Lord can do for them and their child. This we shall sayhas been the year and a half of throwing the stone in the pondsince we started this ministry — now we are beginning to seethe ripples go out. Pray for an intense outreach of our ministry. .. and that die Lord wiU be glorified in EVERY WAY.

God Bless You Each One and We Love and Pray for you, TOO!

Taken from the "North Fresno Christian Newsletter", Fresno,California:

THE BEST YET

Last night from 6:45 to 7:35 we were captives of Tim Bailey(sic) — Incredible, Unbelievable, Absolutely Marvelous, TheBest Yet — These were a small portion of the feelings of thosewho were held spell-bound during Tim's great Concert lastnight.

I am now in my 53rd year in preaching and the spontaneousresponse of the audience to Tim's playing was the best I haveever seen! At the close of his last number the audience (withlarge numbers of Young People) stood as one and the sustainedapplause continued until Tim came back to the platform andwith his boyish grin and sweeping bow acknowledged theirplaudits.

The center section and tlie south section were almost filled, butthe north side was empty. How sorry I am for those of you whomissed one of the most inspirational programs we have ever had!

"TIM'S HYMNS"

... In her book, Rosemary tells notonly of the many crises in their lives, but also how God has given their son atremendous finger dexterity, and how itled to a keen interest in piano. Asparents, they did all in their power toencourage Tim in his music. His littleone finger and one hand tunes led totwo fingers, two hands, and soon he wasscaling the keyboard! Tim plays almostcompletely by ear, never with music, and a song is rarely played the same waytwice. Those who hear and see himMARVEL at this God given ability, andmany requests were made for tapes afterreading llie book, or hearing him-thus"TIM'S HYMNS - HE TOUCHED ME"was made. The name so chosen simplybecause truly GOD touched this one'slife. There are 17 favorite hymns on thecassette.
