All tests used are standardized and

A Brief Background to Present...^rt/sf Tim Baley

A RARE DOUBLE SAVANT:

probably the only known one of his kind, being gifted In the visualand performing arts. Tim's unique paintings entitled GRANDEXPRESSIONS by TIM are created especially for you! Born with braindamage and given no hope of a meaningful life outside anInstitution, least of all that he should contribute to society, hisaccomplishments have far surpassed those predictions!Institutionalized at the age of 13, for a diagnostic study, Tim foundand fell In love with the piano! Classed as "mentally handicappedwith light cerebral palsy" Tim's arms and hands, were under theInfluence of the palsy. However, his eyes beheld a piano In a room hespent much time. He was magnetized to It, and worked unrelentingly toproduce one finger tunes. Spurred on with excitement, of his newfound love, hard work and determination led him to play with twofingers then two hands. The ensuing result led him to the concertstage In 1979. His concert tours have taken him Into most of the 50

United States and many foreign countries. He has thrilled at playingon the White House Lawn, at the Pentagon, and Kennedy Center, and at acongressional reception. He was privileged to appear In Joint concertwith Norma ZImmer. In a suprlse filming, arranged by NBC for their TVshow,"FANTASY", Tim met and played a duet with LIberace on his 'glass'concert g^and piano In his museum In Las Vegas, Nevada. He wasrecently showcased with Steve Allen. In 1987 Tim received a Christmas

gift. In place of stationary, to write his thank you note, he broughtto his mother a beautiful painted card. Upon looking at It shenoticed It was autographed by Tim! She asked for MORE Christmas cards, thinking they would be the same design, hoping he might make 12-15 tosend to close friends. Tim produced over 100, all different. Otherseasonal cards continued and then he began making larger paintings, and entering art shows. He won 8 different awards the first year. Atthe suggestion of friends slides of his work were made and are now

shown as his concerts are given. He drew trucks, buildings and somepianos In previous years, but his parents had no Idea of the talentwithin. Their efforts were focused on his musical ability. Bydiagnostic studies because of Tim's brain damage he should not be ableto do anything geometric or abstract. His poor vision does notqualify him for perception; He does not use a ruler, yet his lines arebeautiful and straight even with the cerebraI pa 1sy> and he has had noart lessons. Possibly the greatest uniqueness of Tim's work Is eachcard and painting he does Is of a musical motif, and his endlesscreativity continues to explode with designs all beautiful anddifferent When asked by a reporter which was the most Important tohim, his music or his art, he quickly replied, "Which Is the mostImportant, the husband or the wife?"

OK LA HOMA

NEVER could I do such a thing! Oh, but Idid! Let me tell you how it happened...The "usual" busy schedule here at homesmothered our efforts of preparation for aconcert tour into Oklahoma and Missouri. A

long while before booking Oklahoma and thescheduled flight there, we had booked a

concert in Burbank the day before we wereto be in Oklahoma. We anticipated noproblem, however, as we expected to be inBurbank May 2, and leave for Oklahoma the

morning of May 3rd. Tim was scheduled andanticipated playing at 3:00 P. M. May 3rdat the KIAMICHI MEN'S CLINIC. We thought wecould leave very early May 3rd. Well it was

very early! Our destination had no directflight to make our scheduled time, so we-

ha'^ to take a "RED EYE" flight! Thus, itwas to Burbank the morning of May 2nd,-

return home afternoon, and go to the LosAngeles airport at 10:00 P.M. for a flightat 12:45 A.M. (May 3rd). We arrived, (notbright-eyed and bushy tailed) at 6:45 A.M.in Memphis, left there at 10:30 for Ft.

Smith, Arkansas arriving at 11:30 A.M. Wehad a 2 hour ground trip after securing our

luggage, as well as having lunch, but withour efficient host, Charlie Talbott,

meeting us and knowing exactly what he wasdoing, we arrived at 2:40, just in the nickof time. None of the hustle and bustle

Tim, Kenny Rogers & Gary Morrison White House Lawn

rubbed off on Tim. He was in his glory whenhe got to the keyboard and gave the piano agood going over. Every bone and muscle wehad was beginning to rebel. We wereunaware of the calendar, after we got onthat plane, but I had been VERY aware

Jerry's birthday was May 4th. I tried toget a gift before we left. No time, so Ithought 1*11 get a card at least and we'll

celebrate later. In the rush and

preparation, I didn't even get a card! Wefocused totally on getting to Burbank and

on to Oklahoma! Our time at the Kiamichi•s

was exciting and busy. On the 5th we weretaken into Enid, by Joe Wilson, minister of

OAKWOOD CHRISTIAN CHURCH, where we would be

having a Sunday concert on the 7th. We weredriving merrily along and it H I T me! Iburst forth with, "OH I forgot Jerry's

birthday!" I don't recall ever feelingmore overcome with regret. How could I

forget the birthday of one I love so verymuch? Simple... my mind was filled andcluttered with so many other things. Thishas struck home to me constantly and taughtme a lesson. I'll share it with you. Itis so easy to get so busy that we forgetabout our Lord! Things we feel are so veryimportant become our priorities. He, theone who should be our first love, many

times is forgotten. Maybe it is good thatI didn't remember Jerry's birthday, Ilearned a great lesson. Jerry is so

forgiving because of our love. I know, too, that my Lord will forgive me no matter

how I fail Him, BUT I must remember to keepin touch...Now the BEST part of this... Atthe Clinic, on the evening of May 4th, theyasked who was the oldest one there, neither

of us remembered it was HIS birthday!

(P.S. He was not the oldest however).

Best to tell you about the rest of thistrip before I go on. Joe, and his peopleendowed us with T.L.C. and as if that

wasn't enough, many freinds around the area

came. (Surprises galore) That alwaysexcites Tim, and vigor replaced his usualA.M. slows! A fast but lovely lunch withour hosts. Dr. and Mrs. Ross Rumph, anddear friends, Forrest and Edythe

Clodfelter, Grand Junction, Colorado, andthen Chad Miller "vanned" us to Oklahoma

City. There was red-carpet treatment fromthe whole DRAPER PARK CHRISTIAN CHURCH,

minister Jim Avery, wife, Pat, and son,Chris. Julie Russell Kout, was a lovely, very young girl living in El Paso when welived there. Now she is the beautiful wife

of David Kout, youth minister at Draper

Park, and mother of a precious little boy.Such a pleasant surprise to see them, and

in addition, lots of others, (oh for spaceto mention them all) we did not know werein the area. It was wonderful. The

Averys, Kouts, FOOD, and us had a great

afterglow!

NO BIG HURRY - BUT ON TO MISSOURI

Kind of hard to settle down to sleep, butweariness had beset us. Morning appearedso lovely, and we were ready for Boyce

Mouton's (minister of the CARL JUNCTION,

MO. CHRISTIAN CHURCH) arrival to transportus to Joplin. Boyce was truly the personeveryone had said he was. Our miles on thehighway were enjoyable, and a specialblessing was a stop in Tulsa, for Tim toplay for Boyce's father (who is ill) andmother. Our arrival in Joplin, Mo. startedoff on a right note. It was dinner time,

and Boyce just happened to know of a greatMexican Restaurant!

SUCH GOOD NEWS at GOOD NEWS!

Next stop was GOOD NEWS PRODUCTION

INTERNATIONAL. Here we would be makingvideos, one with Boyce who was the host, called VENTURES IN FAITH, (jerry, Tim and Iwere interviewed) which will be beamed

around the world on satellite; the other ofTim at the piano and his art work

interjected. The two videos and also tworadio programs which Boyce hosts would bedone in two days. A big undertaking. Wewere in for a real revelation here. For

many years we heard of the work and knew

some of the staff of Good News. Ah, the

impressive grounds and buildings from theoutside. These people realy care aboutthis place! Boyce introduced us to our

hostess, Elly Webb. She in turn took us toour lovely, sparkling clean apartment, supplied with everything (even food). Joy,joy for Tim. What a comfortable night.

Boyce Mouton, Tim, Rosemary & Jerry on the setat Good News Productions

Our only close friend on staff was

Sharlotte Ray, and we had been casualfriends with Ziden (he's executive directorof Good news) and Helen Nutt, Kay Watts, and Sherie Kafton. What blessings were tocome our way! Both mornings we wereprivileged to share in the daily staffprayer meetings. Thus we were able to

meet, speak and pray with them beforefilming and working together the next 2days. Time was precious, so we worked, stopping only for a staff luncheon, thefirst day, fixed by Billy. Tim said, "WOW!"The Mexican food revved him up forafternoon. Delicious! What a treat to

share in this way. During the afternoon wetook time to do the radio program. Byquitting time, of the Good News staff, muchhad been accomplished. The next day wasessentially the same, (snuck a delightfullunch with Helen and Ziden) but there wasmuch to do and time was creeping up on us.we had a concert scheduled! I also needed

to begin packing our things to leave the

Tim at piano, Good News Productions

next morning. At 4:00 P.M. we were to thepoint I wasn't needed, so I went and beganpacking and got things together for theconcert. Tim and I were ready when Dad

rushed in at 5:50 to change. At 6:15 wewere at the WEBB CITY CHRISTIAN CHURCH!

With the assistance of Calvin St. Clair,

minister, we were ready for the 7:00 P.M.

concert, another heartwarming occasion for

us. The thrill of seeing unexpectedfriends from times past and an after

concert dinner with the St. Clairs, and Mr.

and Mrs. Ralph Coons (they are the parentsof Mrs, Knofel Staton) gave us joyfulrelaxation. End of a perfect day.

No alternative for a flight home so, veryearly, Charles Webb (Elly's husband)graciously took us to the airport. As weawaited the flight a pleasant surprise came

before our eyes! Ziden Nutt, had come tosee us off. I call that special. He andTim had a last minute time to see which is

the biggest clown. No decision made.

Our chatter on the plane going back homewas a mile a minute. We were overwhelmedwith God's love, blessings and joysexperienced through His people, from thetime we left L.A. on May 2nd, till we saidgood bye to Ziden May 11! Our lives wereblessed by the GOOD NEWS STAFF as theyextended love to us. What a tribute thebeautiful buildings are to God's work, andthe dedicated love they have for HIM iscertainly evident through their work andcare of HIS facility. We are thankful theyasked us to come, otherwise, we may nothave ever realized the greatness of thisministry, THEY DESERVE PRAYER ANDFINANCIAL SUPPORT. You may write them:

SO MUCH TO REMEMBER

SINCE I LAST WROTE IN DECEMBER

First, for those who watched...Tim was not

on the Rose Parade float for the Los

Angeles Music Center! The REASON? We weretold a few days before, the musicians union

and insurance stopped his participation.LOTS of other stories too, Tim took it in

stride. "Well, it was nice I was asked,

maybe another time."

The last Christmas concert was, as always,

a wonderful experience, as were the days of

relaxation that followed. In fact we kind

of folded up. However, Tim was more thanready to enjoy Disneyland, and Dad and I

got a handle on the schedule for 1989. Weeven had a nice wedding anniversarycelebration Dec. 22!

There were several articles I had to write,

or get material to for magazines, andpapers, I was greatly relieved to get thisdone. One recently published. The purposeof the magazine is "To Bring A Better LifeTo People With Mental Retardation".

MORE of THIS and THAT

April was a tremendously busy month! We

loved it. Among the activities was our

involvement with PACIFIC CHRISITIAN COLLEGE

as they celebrated with the city of

Fullerton in a showcase of the Arts on

April 28, 7:00 to 11:00 P.M. Businesses

throughout the city participated and thecity furnished bus transportation to thevarious locations. Tim was asked to have

an art exibit and 2 concerts. We took 85

large paintings, and over 250 hand-drawnnote cards to exhibit. I don't believe the

extent of his visual art creativity hit meuntil I saw the display that night. The

response was exciting.

Early the next morning we wound our way tothe beautiful Arrowhead Springs Hotel, above San Bernardino, to participate in thePARKCREST CHRISTIAN CHURCH Woman's Retreat.

I spoke Saturday A.M., and then we had aconcert in the afternoon. Sunday morning Ispoke again wrapping it all up, emphasizingour "ENDURANCE FROM HIS ASSURANCE" which

is the theme we have chosen in this type ofprogram. This was a moutain top-experiencefor all of us. What a very, very specialgroup of women, and I was so blessed bybeing with them.

Nineteen pieces of Tim's art were placed inLOVE'S restaurant near Knott's Berry Farm,

from January through March. June and July,12 pieces hung in GIBRALTAR SAVING AND LOANand several in the ANAHEIM CIVIC CENTER, An

exibit in a NEWPORT BEACH Gallery, as wellas several out of town, are adding to

exposure of his work. He continues withtremendous love of painting. Asked by areporter which was the most important to

Tim & Jim Troesh at Art Exhibit

VIEWS OF THE NEWS

"THE SAVANT SYNDROME"

I am sure most of you have heard of and

possibley seen the movie "Rainman". It hasgenerated MUCH attention toward savantpeople. We and the college (HopeUniversity - UNICO National College) havecertainly been amid the current interest.

There are several savants at the college. They and Tim have appeared on numerous T.V.

programs, localy and nationally. Timplayed and produced some of his art work.It has come to our attention that there is

a conflict of thought in this field. Somefeel savants are not creative but

recreative, that they mimic or copy what

they see and hear. In my thinking; what wesee and hear, if it is not done from copy

or memorized, it is produced as God's

creation through us. There can be no doubtabout this, however, when Tim paints. There

is no copy, it comes TOTALLY from withinhis mind. There is creativity! Recently

one of his paintings made a tremendousimpression on a teacher because of itsintricate design. He asked Tim to tell him

how he did it, so he might help hisstudents. Tim's answer was simple, "Idon't know, but it wasn't hard!" He is

also quick to say he can only do what hedoes (play the piano and paint) because Godgave him the gifts. One person doing thisstudy told us she was and is checking, buthad found no other savants who excelled in

both the visual and performing arts such asTim. I imagine they are there, yet to be

discovered. We never thought of Tim

painting. We were so grateful for hisability at the keyboard.

IT JUST CAN'T BE this good!!!

Jerry has had little vision in his left eyefrom birth. As a child, before the wondersof medicine, he went to a school for theblind. Glasses eventually became a greathelp. Sometime ago a cataract began formingon the right eye. The eye surgeon said he

would not touch it until Jerry hollered"UNCLE". Even though the success rate ishigh, there always is the element of riskof something going wrong. He got to theplace he could not see the left turnsignals (I didn't know this) so he justfollowed the flow of the traffic. I made

the appointment for him to say - UNCLE. Onelook at his eye and the doctor said,"WHEWEEE"! We were told they would call andarrange surgery according to our schedule.Naturally we were apprehensive. Ourprayers were continuous for success, and wecalled many and asked for prayers, if therewas a problem it would certainly effect ourwork. The person to make all of thearrangements didn't call us. I was goingto call her but before I did, a letter came

in the mail. We were astounded. All

pre-appointments and the surgery (April 10)had been booked without checking ourschedule! I got the calendar out, and doyou know that EVERY date could not have fitthe timetable better. Each concert in our

calendar went along as planned. The timeallowed from sugery to our first out oftown trip was exact - to the date!.. Thereis MORE! When the the doctor finished

Jerry's procedure he said, "You know thatis the smoothest, easiest surgery I havedone in a long time. I certainly did notexpect it."... There is MORE!.. From thetime it was done there has been great

improvement in his vision, and though heneeds glasses at times, he IS ABLE TO SEETO DRIVE WITHOUT HIS GLASSES! There is

MORE! ...When we went in the last time the

doctor just shook his head, after lookingat the pre and post surgical results, andsaid, "This just CAN'T be, your eyeshouldn't be this good. It is hard tobelieve I" How can anyone doubt the powerof prayer and divine guidance and meet theturbulence in life without HIM? Thank

you...to all who prayed, and we thank HIMfor allowing this tremendous blessing. Ithas overwhelmed us. We committed the TOTAL

situation to HIM, and he took care of it

and gave us so much more than we dreamedpossible. Praise God from whom allblessings flow!

AND THERE IS STILL MORE!

Extensive testing and physical examinationswere done in preparation for the cataractsurgery. So thorough, we wondered why, whenwe had to run for all the tests. It provedto be a blessing, but a shockingrevelation, when a biopsy taken revealedmoderate malignancy of the prostate. Abone scan on July 10, then treatment wasoutlined, 7 weeks of chemotherapy, 5 days aweek. The scripture tells us, (James1:2-3) "Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowingthat testing of your faith producesendurance." We ask your CONTINUOUS prayersfor total healing, energy and strength tocontinue our work, if it is HIS will. WE

KNOW GOD'S POWER AND LEAN TOTALLY UPON IT.

A WHOLE LOT OF FUN

IN WASHINGTON!

Many months ago Tim was chosen as the soloperformer to represent California in theFIRST INTERNATIONAL VERY SPECIAL ARTS

FESTIVAL (IVSAF). More than 1,000 peoplewith physical and mental challenges came toWashington, D.C. from all 50 states and 56countries. Describing from the VSA paper;"It is a showcase of talent sending amessage to the world demonstrating thepower of the arts in the lives of thispopulation who have special needs.Festival participants share the joy ofartistic achievement at locations

throughout Washington, D.C....at the WhiteHouse and Capitol Hill...the campus ofGeorgtown University, and the stages of theJohn F. Kennedy Center for the PerformingArts." We have been involved with VSA ever

since we began to travel in 1980. When Timwas invited we were thrilled, but because

only a small portion of the funds needed togo is supplied, we hesitated because itwould be costly. Again we prayed that ifit was God's will He would open doors.Things began to happen! Tim was scheduledto play for the Mayor's (Marcial "Rod"Rodriguez) Prayer Breakfast in Norwalk,California. Program Chairman, MarilynMorin, who booked the performance, read thearticle that had been in an Anaheim paper

about the proposed trip. She becameexcited, and presented the story to thecommittee she worked with asking if theycould take up a free-will offering. Thisis something they DO NOT DO. It was onlydone one other time. They voted a verypositive YES! From the kindness of thecommittee and generosity of those at thebreakfast, a check for $500.00 was

received, and others chimed in along theway. Our friend. Ken Meade, minister of

the CHURCH OF CHRIST at MANOR WOODS,

Rockville, Maryland arranged concerts inthe Washington, D.C. area churches prior tothe festival. It was a joy to return to

Rockville, and to CENTRAAL CHRISTIAN

CHURCH, Springfield, Virginia, Dale Jacobs, minister, and to have first time concerts

at CALVARY CHRISTIAN CHURCH, Burke,

Virginia, Greg Turner, minister; andANTIOCH CHURCH of CHRIST, Manassas,

Virginia, where Jerry Timbrook isminister. Thus combined efforts of those

and many others helped make the trip

possible. We left June 7th and went to

Canton, Ohio to see Mother. The 8th was

spent with her and Tim gave a concert atthe CANTON CHRISTIAN HOME where she lives.

This is always a very special time for allof us. We said good-by and left forWashington on the 9th, and had concerts inthe above churches 10-13, We were showered

with love, fellowship, many new friends, and physical nourishment was enjoyed withBob and Stacy Rudnicki, and the Fred

Wharton, family and old friends. Deb andRick Ruble. Fabulous church dinners with

Manor Woods and Springfield helped extend

the waist line. Yum.yum. NONE of it hardto take! ! !

TRULY A VERY VERY SPECIAL ART TIME

The IVSAF began the evening of the 14th.Our home for the next 5 days was the lovely

Sheraton Washington, one of the hotelheadquarters for the festival. We moved toit at 4:00 P.M. Weather had been very

stormy around Washington, but nothingserious, I noticed the blackness of the

sky, but we were preoccupied with gettingto the hotel without getting lost.Arriving, Jerry let me out to check us in.I picked up our packets, went out andmotioned for him to go to anotherentrance. I walked the brief distance. He

pulled up and got out of the car, the bellhops got all the luggage out, and INSTANTLYit seemed we were standing under Niagara

Falls!!! What a down-pour. Soon we were inour room looking out. We could not seeacross the street for the storm.

Television said the area we had come

through had 70 mile hour winds, many treesuprooted, severe floods and damage! Thebeautiful song, "God Will Take Care of you"rang in our minds.

President Bush acknowiedged the Very Special Arts"Friendship Ouiit" at its unveiiing

Beginning the festivities, was a lovelybuffet and get-acquainted time atGEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY. It was awesome to

meet and be inspired by so many handicappedpeople from ALL AROUND THE WORLD! Tim wasliteratlly flabbergasted being with all ofthe cultures represented, and tookadvantage of every opportunity to talk toanyone who spoke English or interpreted,June 15th was a day to remember. Acelebration reception on the WHITE HOUSE

lawn, with President and Mrs. Bush, wasvery special indeed! We weren't quite eyeball to eye ball, but sat at the oppositeend and 3 rows behind them. What warmth

and sensitivity they expressed! The IVSAF

FRIENDSHIP QUILT was unveiled at this

reception. One person was chosen from each

state or foreign country to make one 8X8square representing their area. The squarewas then sent to Washington and the quiltassembled and quilted there. I could not

believe the magnificent beauty of thismasterpiece! We were, naturally, proud to

have Tim represent California in designingand painting our state square. We hope ittravels from state to state, as we

originally were told, and you can see it.Final destination the White House...Chills

went through our bodies as the U.S. Navy

Sea Chanters sang. What a beautiful andemotional experience!... Celebrities, included Gary Morris, Pearl Bailey, KennyRogers, Miss Universe, Ted Kennedy, Jr.,Senator Edward Kennedy, and Jean KennedySmith. Tim was right beside them with anautograph pad. He was thrilled by each.

but about went into outer space when he metKenny Rogers. Only one took precedence overhim and that was MISS UNIVERSE. When she

put her arm around him and said, "I love

you, Tim," he was gone! She was solovely. Wanda, my sister-in-law said,"Isn't Jerry thrilled he had his cataractsurgery?"

Following the White House ceremonies wewent to pick up the tux Tim would be

wearing this evening. It was given to oneof the volunteers to keep while we were atthe ceremonies. You can not imagine theexcitement of this pretty young girl when

she gave us the suit and said, "Tim's tux

hung in the White House! I GOT TO GO CLEAR

INTO THE WHITE HOUSE INTERIOR (2nd floor)AND HANG HIS TUX!" That tux will never

leave Tim's closet when he is done wearing

it, I know! After that it was on to the

CONGRESSIONAL RECEPTION and into the tux.

A buzz with the news media, festivalE>articipation, congressmen, otherofficials, as well as a host of invited

guests, it was an electrifying experience.Tim was asked to play for this. What a funprivilege! Additional joy was ours whenSenator Pete Wilson, California, unable tocome, sent his wife, Gayle, to representhim. No matter what your political viewthere would be 100% vote - she is

strikingly beautiful, inside and out.

Adding joy to the momentous occasion alsowas Congressman Ralph Regula, Ohio, who hadbecome our friend, and is from our home

area, near Canton, Ohio. We were so veryhonored they came.

In addition to the above performance, Timwas thrilled to give a concert on Saturdaythe 17th A.M. at the Kennedy Center,Dressed in his blue tux pants, whitejacket, white shirt, and bright redcarnation, cummberbund and tie, he broughtthe people to tears and their feet as he

played his heart out and closed with a

stirring patriotic medley! There wereperformances by the participants in variousplaces all over Washington and throughoutthe Kennedy Center! All events were

scheduled and transportation arranged bythe IVSAF. We were transported to and fromby BIG busses, or cabs. Food was

transported to us or we to it. Each

participant had the privilege of hearingother participants, or enjoying workshops, working such around their individualschedules.

In addition, on June 17th rehearsal was

scheduled for the CLOSING CEREMONIES GALA

held in the Kennedy Center, It was filmedfor a TV show which will be shown on:

N,B,C. Sunday,September 10,1989 at 8:00 P.MEST - Sponsored by ITT. It was the "IVSAF"

Closing Ceremonies Gala - "From the Heart".

(We suggest you CHECK YOUR TV DIRECTORY incase there are changes in the schedule).

Each state or country chose 2 persons torepresent their specific place. Tim wasone from California. Again a host ofcelebrities added their dimensions of

concern for the handicapped. Among many

were Lauren Bacall, Mikhail Baryshnikov,Crystal Gayle, Louis Gossett, Jr., JimHenson, and Kermit the frog, Amanda Mc

Broom, Tony Melendez, Gary Morris, and

Melissa Manchester, Gary Morris opened theGala singing "From the Heart", with thefull cast of stars, U.S. Navy Sea Chanters,

and the participants of IVSAF. The beautyof his singing, the words of the song, aswell as the song itself almost makes ones

heart stop! Standing with Tim (to the lefton your screen) was precious Mindy Cane theother California representative in the

gala. As the song concludes Mindy goesover to Gary and he lovingly picks her up.Truly a proud moment for all of us fromCalifornia! Numerous handicapped festivalparticipants excelled in performance, between the beginning and finale of"Somewhere Over the Rainbow" with Melissa

Manchester and the full cast singing. Wassimply magnificent I Mark your calendar tosee it, you will be blessed.

REFLECTIONS AND EXPRESSIONS

The exaltation felt at and after the gala

was replaced with a tinge of sadness asdeparture times began. It can't be over,we thought. Yet, a shortness of sleep, theexcitement and exhilaration experienced

brought rebuff from our bodies, however, which seemed to cry out for a bit ofrest...We had been touched deeply, by thesepeople from around the world. There wereNO barriers, and in many instances therewas no verbal communication, only gestures,

and smiles. It was enough. Awesome, andastonishing seem like feeble words todescribe our joyous experience. It istragic that the same joy is not feltuniversally. It seems that handicappedpeople are always battling a storm. Ithought about the storms that had beenabout us. Prejudice saturates theirworld. Fear of the unknown causes

rejection of the love each handicappedperson is trying to burst forth with.Accolades to Jean Kennedy Smith, whostarted Very Special Arts, and many others, for vision and concern! The stone is

tossed in and the ripples are flowing. Oh,

NOV/DEC HOLIDAYS 1989

A Saturday night concert, a considerabledistance from Anaheim found us arrivingback at our home very late. Our weary

bodies were as floppy as cooked spaghetti.Even so, it had been a joyously long, hardday and night. After a good hot bath, andsetting the trusty little alarm (we don'thave a rooster) we were out at the same

time as the lights. There was no doubt inour minds we'd hear the melodious tune of

the ity bity clock! However, seems I justreached up and shut it off! Suddenly, withno reason, I had a rude awakening, andlooked at the clock. We were up NOW! I

called Tim...as I have said before, TIME is

a word he cannot relate to. HURRY is NOT

in his vocabulary. I try so hard not to

say, "Hurry, Tim," but this morning and thehour for Church to begin did not allow forthis. As I noted, he was tired and

apparently 'adrenalinless', I said, "Hurry,Tim we are so late!" He looked at me in a

very shocking tone, with a voice full ofquestion, and said, "Why Mom, we can't belate, we just got up!" Needless to say

this had Jerry and me chuckling all daylong. There was laughter, but as I thoughtof this, I thought, my, how we are asleepin our Christian life! Will we sleep away

productive years of the joy of service, andsuddenly awaken with only minutes to giveHim, or will it be too late? Oh, by the

way, we DID make it to the church on time.Food for thought - - Ephesians 5:11-16(especially 14-15)

A RACE FOR SPACE

Oh, the struggle over space. What to leave

out that I would love to write about! But

reality says, struggle. I'm struggling!

SOARING LIKE AN EAGLE,LEFT NO TRAIL FOR A BEAGLE

We had intense eagerness in going to GrandJunction, Colorado for a concert with theNortheast Christian Church! The Church, whohas faithfully supported us, host a WesternSlope BB Que each year. Lloyd McMillan, minister, and the missions committee hadasked us to come for this festive event.Home is where the heart is... and this washome from 1956-63. Precious life-longfriends and memories were there. WithJerry's radiation therapy treatments, wewondered if our plans would materialize. We had hope, but with some questions. Ourreservations had to be made. There are NOrefunds on airline tickets, but thepurchase deadline was here! We prayed,"Lord, may it be that we go, and not losethe money invested in the tickets,(anticipation had built up so long)however, may we accept your will." Thedoctor told us we could go for theweekend. Jerry could receive his treatmenton Friday morning and skip Monday, and theywould extend the treatment one day at theseries end. Reservations were made and out

came the suitcases. Seems our clothes arebecoming trained and just crawl in (Iwish.) I Jerry got his treatment in themorning of August 18, and we made it to theLong Beach airport with ease for our 3:30P.M. flight out. The best part; we did nothave the L.A. traffic hassle, and coulddrive to the airport instead of taking theshuttle! What peace and serenity we feltas we enjoyed the beautiful flight. Ourhearts raced with gratitude as we left infull sunlight seeing His beautifulcreation. Shades of a glorious sunset soonappeared, followed by the awesomeness ofthe twinkling stars and moon. Theruggedness of the Rocky Mountains piercedthrough the moonlight, and lights beneathus flickered into appearance. Dusk madeway for night in this seemingly peacefulworld below..."Wow!", Tim said when welanded so perfectly, on time (got to givethe airline credit). The hour was late, but the Frank Dagley's graciously met usand were certainly alert and attentive toour every need as they took us to thehotel. Saturday was a day to see the manychanges, and there were MANY, in the oldhometown! Also, Tim needed practice, andset up on Saturday would allow a few extrawinks Sunday morning. Tim, began namingall the kids who were in special educationwith him, hoping each could come to theconcert. We could not believe heremembered them! Sunday began with Timplaying at Northeast at 8:00 A.M. firstservice. Then we went to nearby CliftonChristian Church, for their service. At6:00 P.M., on the lawn of the CliftonChurch, Lloyd and his crew served BB Que2nd to none! After the BB Que, the shorttrek was made back to Northeast for theconcert. The church had done its homeworkin preparation for it. The local paper. The Daily Sentinel, called us and did a 2hour phone interview. It resulted in afeature story, with pictures. As we droveup to the church, Tim was tingling withexcitement. The parking lot was alreadynearly full. Inside, men were scurrying, carrying in chairs. People squeezed closertogether, children sat on laps, some on thefloor. Eventually all that remained wasthe choir loft (behind the piano)'Itfilled to capacity, and some stood. Tim'sonslaught to the lovely piano offered noresistance, and it obediently followedcommand in perfect harmony. I almost thinkit was in partnership with Tim and the

Lord, as prior to the concert Tim said,"Oh, Lord please help me do a good job foryou and all who come." I can not rememberwhen continuous applause brought tears tohis eyes and a blush to his face, but itdid this night! He was dumbfounded at theresponse... Finally, he said, with achoked voice, "Thank you so much forcoming. It's so good to be back home!"Until that time we had not really thoughtabout this being HOME to Tim. However, allof his knowledgable early memories tookplace here and lots of "forever friends"still remain, and some are still deeplyinvolved in his life. Many had heard himplay, but few were aware of the art. Therewere those who came just from the newspaperstory, who knew the little boy way backwhen his dynamic vigor seemed only to causeeruption or destruction! The time afterthe concert was an extreme emotional

experience, and tears of joy andthanksgiving to God flowed freely as peopleexpressed their feelings. One who wasthere with vivid recollections of the early

years, and so very, very loved by Tim, washis only living teacher, on the westernslope, Mrs. Ernie (Arlyne) Potter. How wellshe knows from where he has come, and God's

power in his life. The Daily Sentinelinterviewed Mrs. Potter for the article

they published and part of her quotationwas, "The last time I heard Tim, he met me

at the door, put his arms around me andsaid, I can tie my own shoes now, Mrs.Potter." Truthfully, we wondered if hismind and hands would work together that hecould EVER accomplish this! How he didstruggle... As she left that night wetearfully embraced and she said, "The art,I can't believe it!" People surprised usby coming from very long distances! Thefarthest were, our ever faithful friends,Forrest and Edythe Mae Clodfelter, formerGrand Junctionites who moved to Salt Lake,

300 miles; and her brother and his wife.Merle and Vivian Rintoul, from Kansas, on

vacation in Laveta, Colorado, 325 miles.Scores, whom we had not seen since we leftin 1963, drove from mountain towns around. And, yes, there were those who had childrenthat were in Tim's class! The exhilaration

of the evening, had one profound regret. How we wished there was time to spend withall we knew, to share their lives of thesepast years. Heaven awaits us all!

COMMUNICATION... IT'S NOT ALWAYS VERBAL

"Mrs. Baley, is Tim free November 18, thathe might attend the Founders DistrictToastmasters International Conference?"

Speaking to me on the phone was Mr. TomMcKerlie. He proceeded to explain and saidthat awards would be given out at the

event. In checking, I said he could bethere, and questioned how long he wouldplay. He told me that part was not

determined yet. He explained how they feltTim truly communicates and shares hisfeelings through his music and art, andthen he said; "The lessons in communicationTim provides are legion, we look forward topresenting to him the Communications andLeadership award, that is WHY we want himto come!" This award has never been givento someone like Tim, but usually to highlyprominent people or celebrities. It willbe a day to remember I assure you! And asI was thinking after I talked with him, after a concert recently a young man whohad done little with his life, and had justhappened into the service came forward toaccept Christ as his Savior. He said hefelt so ashamed of his useless past, knewhe should change but did not want to make acommittment. He vowed to serve the Lord

that day! Communication? Yes. Verbal? No.

BENEFIT FROM A BENEFIT

We were scheduled to be in San Diego for aBenefit Dinner for the Clair Burgener

Foundation for the DevelopmentallyDisabled at the lovely Mission Bay HiltonHotel. Ordinarily a distance of 2 hours oneway, we go and come back the same day. Irealized it would be too tiring for Jerry. The lady in charge called and said, "Wewant to know what we can do for you?" I

told her our situation, and just assumedwe'd cancel it as there was no money

involved. She immediately replied, "Oh,we'll get you a room." They did! Not one,but a lovely suite. When we entered, therewas a HUGE beautiful fruit/cheese/crackerbasket with a card to "V I P Tim Baley and

Parents". After our OHS and AHS I showed

the card to Tim, and he said, "You mean

me?" What gracious generosity from thehotel. The celebrity of the evening wasWILL SHRINER... I recognized him, but onlybecause I saw him around the sound system.

He somehow looked very different than hedoes on T.V. He came over to Tim and said,

"You're Tim, aren't you? I am so glad to

meet you!" Tim looked at him closely andsaid, "Well, thank you, and what is yourname?" Needless to say....Tim's face wasred! We sat at a table with such lovelypeople, so we came away so very blessed. A

current project of the Clair BurgenerFoundation is building homes for thehandicapped. We thrilled at their programand wish it was universal.

BITS OF HISTORY THAT AREN'T A MYSTERY

Had a great day with Central ChristianChurch, San Bernardino, Jerry's home

church, Sunday, September 17. The Churchhas grown so. We went to acquaint themwith our work. Now we look forward to

going back for a full concert for the areaon December 17...Tim has drawn 65 pictures

depicting CHRISTMAS MUSIC. It was a greatundertaking. Ideas needed to flow andcreativity had to be plentiful. We got thefinished slides back, and they are lovely. Now can't we wait for the Christmas

concerts!
