The University of Miami Hurricanes will host the 24th NCAA Tournament Regional in pro-gram history beginning this Friday, and will be joined at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field by second-seeded UCF, third-seeded Mis-souri State and fourth-seeded Stony Brook. Miami found out its postseason fate a day early, as the team was selected as one of 16 regional hosts for the first round of the post-season. The Hurricanes, who finished the season with a 36-21 record and an appear-ance in the Atlantic Coast Conference Cham-pionship, were one of five teams from the conference selected to host. Miami will open its postseason with the fourth-seeded Seawolves of Stony Brook (46-11), who earned a berth by capturing their fourth America East Conference Champion-ship in program history. The Hurricanes have faced the Seawolves only one time, winning their March 19, 2003 match-up in Coral Ga-bles by a final score of 9-8. First pitch for the Hurricanes game against the Seawolves on Friday, June 1 is set for 7 p.m. at Alex Rodri-guez Park. UCF finished the season 43-15 overall and an impressive 16-8 in Conference-USA. Mi-ami split its home-and-home with the Knights

this season, earning a win during their March 14 road trip to Orlando, Fla. but falling 4-1 in a home contest in early April. Despite drop-ping their most recent match-up, the Hur-ricanes hold a 16-4 all-time advantage over the Knights. UCF will open its postseason at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 1 against Missouri State. Similar to their brief history with the Sea-wolves, the Hurricanes have little experience facing the Bears of Missouri State. Miami has taken the only two head-to-head match-ups with the university, formerly known as South-west Missouri State. Miami enjoyed an 8-2 win in the Austin, Texas regional of the 1996 postseason, and also captured a 7-5 win on June 17, 2003 during the College World Se-ries in Omaha. ACC competitors Florida State (Tallahassee, Fla.), Virginia (Charlottesville, Va.), North Car-olina (Chapel Hill, N.C.) and North Carolina State (Raleigh, N.C.) were announced among the other 15 hosts announced on Sunday. Overall, seven teams from the conference were selected among the field of 64. The ACC also placed the Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech in the Gainesville, Fla. regional (hosted by Flor-ida) and the Clemson Tigers in the Columbia, S.C. regional (hosted by South Carolina).

No one said it would be easy. But days before the Miami Hurricanes opened the 2012 season with their annual UBaseball Alumni Game, Head Coach Jim Morris explained why he thought his team was good enough to make it back to Omaha, otherwise known as college baseball’s Promised Land. “First of all, I feel really good about our starting pitching,” he said. “We have four veteran pitchers re-turning, and that’s really the number one thing. “We don’t know where we’re at with a lot of things right now, but we do know about [the rotation].” During that sweltering afternoon practice, 108 days before the Hurricanes started preparing for their NCAA-record 40th-consecutive regional, the team’s skipper successfully predicted the future. Miami would end its season as one of only two teams in the conference with a staff earned run av-erage under three (2.95). Each of the team’s three weekend starters finished with an individual ERA ranked in the Top-25 among all Atlantic Coast Con-ference competition: righthander Eric Whaley (2.47, seventh), team co-captain Eric Erickson (2.84, No. 11) and southpaw Steven Ewing (3.28, No. 17) Suffering from late-season offensive inconsis-tencies, the team turned to its rotation to lead the charge into Greensboro, N.C. and the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship. How would they respond? Just as they had all season. Erickson, Whaley and Ewing combined to throw 23 innings over three starts at NewBridge Bank Park, striking out 13 batters while allowing just one walk. Against three line-ups featuring countless All-ACC talents, Miami’s rotation allowed just four combined

earned runs, dominating to the tune of a 1.56 ERA. Even after falling in a heartbreaker in their first game to the Wolfpack, the team’s veteran leaders did not waver. After an eerily quiet bus ride back to the team hotel, Erickson stepped to the front of the bus and turned to his teammates. “You know this thing isn’t over, right?” Erickson boomed. “We can still win this thing. We’re far from done here.” Whaley, who earned All-Tournament recognition for a 129-pitch, eight-inning masterpiece against Wake Forest, further demonstrated the rotation’s veteran leadership only two nights later. Already 110 pitch-es and seven innings deep into his outing, Whaley asked Coach Morris for the ball in the eighth. “He came to me saying that he wanted to stay in the game and that he could get it done,” Morris said after the game. “I don’t do that a lot, but he deserved that opportunity to stay in because he was pitching very well.” The Pompano Beach, Fla. native put the finishing touches on perhaps the most brilliant start of his ca-reer, helping lead Miami to a first-place finish in the uber-talented Pool B group of No. 6 North Carolina, No. 15 North Carolina State and Wake Forest. Now, fresh off their second championship appear-ance in program history, the Hurricanes are set for one last weekend of baseball at The Light with the potential for postseason success resting on the shoulders - literally and figuratively - of its “big three.” “We know what we’re capable of,” Erickson said. “Our rotation is as good as anyone’s in this country. We’ll be ready to play.”by: Camron Ghorbi
