The last country pub in the Sydney Metropolitan area

East Sydney Hotel

The whiteboard outside the East Sydney Hotel says it all “Yes this is the pub with no pokies” A gold-plated virtue according to its many and varied loyal clientele, as publican Harald Muller points out “The trouble with pokies is that the people who can least afford it, play them”. Add to this a ‘No TV policy’ (except for annual Melbourne Cup) you have a character fi lled bar good for drinking, eating and talking. Or as one reviewer put it;

“A delightful, tiny and well-loved hotel with no pokies or blondwood fl oors, Opened in 1856, it is the oldest continually licensed drinking hole in Sydney”

The last country pub in the Sydney Metropolitan area. Historically restored. Open fi replaces, wooden fl oor with copper nails. Our business is quality draught beer, restaurant quality food, and accomodation in the old-fashioned country tradition. Interesting mixed clientele. No pokies.

WORLD BAR

NAME THIS BAR

DARLO BAR

SHADY PINES SALOON

The World Bar is a four-storey converted Victorian terrace located in the heart of legendary Kings Cross, transformed into a party machine set to stun - not only one of the most versatile and unique bar/nightclubs in town, but one that is open 7 days and hosts 7 of Sydney’s most diverse and long-standing clubnights in the evenings. Renowned for their literally World famous Teapot Cocktails (tm), an expansive outdoor terrace area, and a general emphasis on quirk and the unexpected, exploration of the venue’s various rooms, booths, stairwells and hidden areas is the most rewarding part of any visit. Whether you’re having a pizza and a quiet drink early evening or becoming one with the dancefl oor at 2am, you’ll defi nitely fi nd the party oasis you seek at The World Bar.

WORLD BAR24 Bayswater Rd, Sydney (Kings Cross) (02) 9357 7700 www.theworldbar.com

Offering a slice of paradise in the urban surroundings of Sydney, The Darlo Bar brings a creatively tropical element to the Darlinghurst quarter of Sydney. With parasols decorating the upstairs outdoor area in cheerful shades of pink and orange, and kitch wrought iron furniture you are automatically transported away from the day’s troubles as soul and chilled beats pour out, kissing your troubles away with each lick of liquor. However you can completely relax on many of the tables or low sofa’s indoors and take a load off. Take full advantage of their happy hour running from 4-6 Monday – Saturday – so there’s no excuse to miss out.

DARLO BAR306 Liverpool St, Darlinghurst 2010 www.darlobar.com.au

Still having not coined a name since its opening a few months ago, Name This Bar, appears to have been saddled with The Nameless Bar. But does it need a real name? We don’t think so. It’s quirky, it’s cool, and it’s probably one of Sydney’s most unique bars. The perfect place to spend all evening or get to after a few drinks elsewhere, the vibe is upbeat without being over the top, and the cocktail and shot selections are immense, not to mention reasonably priced. Famously getting notoriety for the secret art wars, Nameless Bar previously had some of the walls open to comments being written on them but were then freshly painted white for 8 artists to compete and paint their best pieces, so if you do happen to stumble upon this little gem, be sure to check out the cool art work. Attracting a cool crowd, it’s the kind of place that can soon become a regular haunt and well worth a visit if you’re in town.

NAME THIS BARName This Bar, 197 Oxford St, Darlinghurstwww.namethisbar.com.au

Fancy a drink back at the ranch? Sorry did we say a drink, we meant shed loads of drink as that’s exactly what you’ll get here at Shady Pines. One of Darlinghurst’s newest small bars, the décor is evidently Wild West inspired, with wooden carved Native Americans, the head of a long horned steer that takes up nearly half a wall, and all other manner of taxidermy items, there’s plenty to look at as you obliterate you liver to extinction. And too add to the shenanigans, there’s live country and western music four nights a week and a mechanical bull available for private parties. With bar tenders that know their stuff, you’ll soon be indulging in all sorts of drinks, and with the owners talking to just about everyone, you’ll probably feel so comfortable you won’t want to leave, or will at least stumble out and into the safety of a taxi a few hours after you fi rst walked in for that ‘one pint’. Be sure to try the Mint Julep!

Worth a shout in Melbourne

DOUBLE HAPPINESS

ROOFTOP CINEMA

TONY STARR'S KITTEN CLUB

THE CARLTON

From the lack of a name on the front and the avoidance of door number you’d not be blamed for thinking you’d passed through a secret vortex into China upon stumbling into this little Melbournian bar. Situated in a lane off Chinatown, the theme is kept to the very last detail with propaganda style pictures hanging on the wall, little wooden chairs, and stools, and some good Chinese snacks all topped off with some great Tsingtao Chinese beer. Although this is a small bar and can get crowded the cocktail sizes are generous, and the bar will even keep your bottle in between visits - making the clientele seemingly made up of regulars, but nonetheless quite a cool and funky bunch. The name ‘Double Happiness’ is derived from the Chinese symbol for happiness, doubled to show good fortune, and is quite apt as you’ll defi nitely leave a little merry! If you’re wanting to do something a little more than just sit in the pub whilst in Melbourne, then why not head up to Rooftop Cinema. Showcasing a huge selection of art house, cult and new fi lms, you can take in the amazing Melbourne skyline whilst sitting on deck chairs, sipping a drink and broadening your horizons. Situated atop some of the city’s most popular bars bars, it defi nitely is a very ‘cool’ crowd, but is also amazing fun. With fi lms like Ferris Bueller’s Day off sitting next to Labrynth in its program, its defi nitely worth clearing a couple of hours to go and enjoy some sky high al fresco movies.

Probably the coolest jazz club you will ever visit, the Kitten Club is split over two levels, the fi rst holding a ridiculousy well stocked cocktail bar full of wonderment, a restaurant with asian and Mediterranean inspired dishes, and a ladies only powder room, full of treats – as it should be. Climbing the staircase you’re transcended into an environment that would probably most suit James Bond and Pussy Galore. The Galaxy Space is where you’ll fi nd an ever-changing line up of jazz, swing, live comedy, cabaret, and fi lm to keep you thoroughly entertained, and enough dark corners if you fancy your own entertainment, in two words Tony Starr’s Kitten Club is pure brilliance. KITTEN CLUBLv 1, 267 Little Collins Street, Melbourne(03) 9650 2448www.kittenclub.com.au

Stuffed animals, palm trees, an ostritch guarding the bar, a giraffe waiting for a pint, welcome to the crazy house. Once associated with Melbourne’s murky underworld of gangsters, the Carlton is now a place full of fun, frolicks, and the décor is something to behold. With velvet fl ock print polluting everything from the walls to the plant pots in vibrant colours, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a 21st Century kooky tropical wonderland, where not much makes sense apart from having cocktails and enjoying yourself, so you may as well go along with it. The outdoor terrace is laden with palms making you feel as if you have been transported to Miami South Beach, but with more reasonably priced drinks. Oh and not to mention it’s open til 5am Friday and Saturday night, so get ready for a good time. THE CARLTON193 Bourke Street, Melbourne(03) 9663 3246 |www.thecarlton.com.au
