POSITIVE CHANGE
New!
As a responsible business, we have an obligation to preserve and protect the environment and to give back to and support the communities in which we operate. We donate our time, energy and a percentage of our profits to environmental restoration initiatives and community programs that promote sustainability, economic development and self-sufficiency.
7.5% of our profits go to...
All BioPak products are certified carbon neutral. The carbon emissions associated with the production, transport and disposal of our products are calculated by the Carbon Reduction Institute and offset through the purchase of carbon credits.
Since 2010, BioPak customers have offset 60,460 tons of CO2 emissions. That's equivalent to saving 25,436,665 litres of fuel, driving 348,436,665 km or removing 23,866 cars from the road.
We donate 1% of all profits to Rainforest Rescue for the restoration and preservation of rainforest. Since 2012 we have adopted 5,000 trees and purchased three hectares of rainforest in The Daintree National Park.
We are inspired by the community work of so many of our hospitality customers, particularly those working with the homeless and disadvantaged. We are a key partner to STREAT who ‘stop homelessness the delicious way’ by training young homeless people to find their feet through employment in the hospitality industry. We support a number of projects from fantastic charities like Rosies ‘Cuppa’ program, OzHarvest, Food Bank and Christ Mission Possible. A percentage of sales of our Indigenous BioCups go directly to CorporateConnect.AB to support Indigenous communities We also produce a BioCup Art Series to promote artists whose work reconnects consumers with the environment.

CERTIFICATION MATTERS
How BioPak can help
We use sustainably sourced, rapidly renewable, raw materials such as paper from managed plantations, plant and bio-based plastics and agricultural waste streams. Producing packaging made from bioplastic rather than fossil fuels reduces the carbon footprint of a product by a whopping 75%.
Our production facilities are certified to ISO14001 environmental standards and employ the most efficient production equipment.
Our products are recyclable or compostable, and we are proactive in developing and promoting viable end of life disposal alternatives to landfill.
Take, make and reuse
We subscribe to the circular economy model of manufacturing, whereby products are made and remade from sustainably-sourced, infinitely-recyclable materials. The most viable long term solution, not only for single use food service disposables but all products, is to produce them in a way that aligns with and supports the emerging circular economy. The circular economy is the antithesis of our current linear production model of take, make, dispose.
When it comes to single use disposable packaging, a circular economy is not some wishful thinking about a utopian future. There are already many innovative material companies producing high quality, functional packaging that return valuable materials or nutrients back into the cycle at the end of their useful life.
Biodegradable
The term biodegradable is often used by marketers to mislead consumers about the environmental benefit of their products. Technically, biodegradable refers to anything that breaks into smaller and smaller pieces until microorganisms can consume it. All BioPak compostable products are certified to compost in either a home or commercial compost.
Unlike compostable products, there are no industry standards for what is and isn’t considered biodegradable.

2
Certified commercial compostable
All our compostable products are certified either home or commercially compostable to either Australian or European standards. They will completely biodegrade within 120 days, leaving a nutrient rich humus with no toxicity.
When we introduced compostable food service disposables into Australia in 2006 there were no compost facilities that would accept our products. Thanks to both state and national legislation to reduce the amount of waste to landfill, along with generous government funding, the organics recycling infrastructure is growing. There are a growing number of compost facilities accepting our packaging along with other organic waste for recycling.
Understanding landfills
Landfills are not designed to break down waste, only to store it. Unfortunately, garbage still decomposes in a landfill, albeit slowly due to the sealed, oxygen-free environment. This process of decomposition causes the bacteria in the waste to produce methane gas, which is highly flammable and dangerous if allowed to collect underground. It is also a potent greenhouse gas and contributes to global warming.
A staggering and unsustainable 18 million tonnes of waste is landfilled in Australia every year.
LINEAR ECONOMYStraight to landfill – take, make, dispose
CIRCULAR ECONOMYDesigned to reuse or recycle – take, make, reuse
Compostable vs. Biodegradable
The main difference between biodegradable and compostable is the latter breaks down within a defined timeframe of one to four months into a nutrient rich compost. Biodegradable products disintegrate into smaller pieces with no specified timeframe and the fragments could be toxic.
If you see claims that a product is biodegradable without a compostable certification – proceed with caution.

Whenever possible we encourage consumers to bring their own mugs. However, we understand this isn't always practical. For the safest, most hygienic and sustainable alternative, choose BioCups and Lids.
Responsibly sourced paper
Responsible sourcing encourages environmentally sound forestry, helps establish sustainable material flows and preserves valuable resources for future generations.
Well-managed forests provide clean air and water, maintain soil quality, preserve biodiversity and habitats, and sequester CO2, among many other ecosystem services.
At BioPak we are committed to only using certified raw materials from responsible sources with either SFI, PEFC or Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) certification, ensuring that all BioPak paper cups are manufactured from materials sourced from sustainably-managed forests.
Beneficial bioplastic (PLA)
Using bioplastic for our cup lining and lids eliminates the need to use non-renewable fossil resources. The PLA bioplastic used by BioPak has a carbon footprint 75% lower than conventional plastics.
Bioplastic products are made from bio-based rapidly renewable resources such as plants and bacteria. Instead of choosing petroleum-based plastics, that are toxic and cause environmental pollution, consumers can choose products made from compostable, renewable bioplastics.
Production
Produced in a facility certified compliant to international environmental standards (ISO 14001) and ethical and fair labour practices (Sedex).

Carbon neutral
Our cups and lids are certified carbon neutral by the Carbon Reduction Institute, with all CO2 emissions from cradle-to-grave accounted for and offset through the purchase of carbon credits.
Compostable
As our cup lining and lids are made from a certified commercially compostable bioplastic, they can be diverted from landfill to compost facilities. Composting enhances soils, prevents erosion and reduces water usage. Currently only a handful of composters accept packaging. However, as the composting infrastructure grows, so will the ability to compost foodservice packaging.
Recyclable
Our BioCups can be recycled at a limited number of paper recyclers. We are working independently and through industry initiatives to increase the number of locations accepting paper cups in the paper recycling stream.
Landfill
Landfills are not designed to breakdown trash, only to bury it. When organic matter biodegrades in landfill it releases harmful methane gas (84 times more potent than CO2). PLA bioplastic remains inert and does not biodegrade in landfill – which is a good thing!

What’s the difference between bioplastic and plastic with a biodegradable additive?
This can be a confusing landscape to navigate, with various claims and technical terms. One should always be on the lookout for unscrupulous marketing. The most common type of misleading marketing is for plastic products labelled as ‘degradable’, ‘biodegradable’ or even ‘landfill degradable’. Unlike bioplastics, degradable plastics are conventional plastics derived from fossil resources with an additive that the manufacturers claim will render the product biodegradable under specific conditions.
The problem with these claims is that there is no independently verified and conclusive scientific proof that the plastic will completely biodegrade. If the plastic does break down into smaller fragments that persist in the environment, they could be ingested by animals and eventually make their way up the food chain. It also does not address the problem of using finite fossil resources for single use packaging and is certainly not a solution for littering. All this does is offer consumers and brand owners a false sense of sustainability.
THE NATURALALTERNATIVE
Renewable plant-based raw materials
Our compostable bioplastic products are made from renewable resources. Our products offer business and consumers a more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional plastics derived from fossil fuels.
The current generation of bioplastics are produced using abundant, rapidly renewable and cost effective plant resources. The next generation will utilise non-agricultural feedstocks such as algae, bacteria, carbon dioxide and methane gas, further reducing the environmental impact of these materials.
Reduce your carbon footprint
When thinking about reducing the environmental impact of single use disposable packaging, it’s important to recognise that the most significant benefits are realised at the very beginning of the production process by using sustainably sourced raw materials. By design, producing Ingeo™ PLA bioplastic results in up to 75% less greenhouse gas emissions compared to the production of conventional plastic. Even if both end up in a landfill, the reduced emissions alone make bioplastic the more sustainable option.
16
Our promise
We are striving to promote and adopt the circular economy model, whereby products are sustainably produced and effectively recycled in a closed loop cycle instead of the current linear model we have in place.
Whilst there are currently limited end of life options that will further enhance the environmental benefit of using bioplastic packaging, there are a number of independent research papers that demonstrate the environmental benefits of bioplastic made from renewable resources over plastics made from fossil resources even if they end up in landfill.
We all know the current status quo is not sustainable, plastics continue to pollute our environment and enter our food chain. In New Zealand, 252,000 tonnes of plastic waste is disposed of in landfills each year and in Australia, 1.8 million tonnes of plastic goes to landfill EVERY YEAR! Whilst conventional plastics most definitely have their place, they are not a good option for single-use disposables that are used for a couple of hours at most before being discarded.
Solutions exist today, and it's up to the pioneers and entrepreneurs to challenge and change the status quo. It's also up to the consumers to push for change with their choices.
Compostable
Another major benefit of producing compostable bio-based food service packaging is that it can be diverted from landfill along with any remaining food residues at the end of its life through commercial composting – returning nutrients back into the soil and eliminating the methane gas that organics emit when they biodegrade in landfill.
All BioPak's compostable products have been certified to EN13432 or AS4736. This means they have been fully tested (inks, glues etc.) to completely compost within 120 days.
Recyclable
Technically, PLA bioplastics can be recycled, but they currently represent only a small fraction of the plastic waste stream so it's not yet commercially viable to do so. The fact that no recycling facilities currently accept PLA does not mean that this material should not be used. Rather we should persevere and educate business owners and consumers on the benefits and help grow and support the recycling infrastructure until it becomes commercially viable.
Bioplastics do not contaminate existing plastic recycling waste streams. Material recycling facilities use electronic equipment to identify and separate multiple types of plastics used. This technology can easily identify and separate PLA bioplastics from conventional plastics.
What happens if bioplastic ends up in the bin?
It’s a common misconception that products sent to landfill should biodegrade. This is not the desired outcome for landfill waste. Landfills are designed to entomb their contents and to remain stable after they are capped. If the contents biodegrade the landfill would subside. Organic products that do biodegrade in the anaerobic environment release methane gas which is a more potent greenhouse gas than CO2. Scientific studies prove that PLA bioplastic remains inert in landfill.

SWEETsugarcane pulp
Compostable
Sugarcane pulp is a more sustainable and healthier material for both humans and the planet compared to Styrofoam and plastic. Our sugarcane pulp products will biodegrade in both a compost environment and worm farm – returning valuable nutrients back into the soil.
The rate of decomposition depends on the temperature, turnover rate and moisture content of the compost pile. Products will biodegrade much faster if they are shredded into smaller pieces. Sugarcane pulp will biodegrade at the same rate as other fibrous garden waste in a home composting system. They are certified to biodegrade within 120 days in a commercial composting facility.
Renewable resource
We use sugarcane pulp (bagasse) to produce a range of food service containers, plates and bowls.
Sugarcane pulp is an abundant and rapidly renewable resource that will biodegrade in a compost environment, making it an ideal material for foodservice disposables. It is also a by-product of the sugar refining industry, transforming an output that is currently considered waste into a valuable input for another process providing significant environmental benefits.
Using sugarcane pulp as a raw material preserves forests. While 5 tonnes of wood are needed to produce 1 tonne of pulp for paper, only 1.5 tonnes of sugarcane pulp are needed to produce the same amount.
Oven, microwave and freezer safe
In addition to the environmental benefits, sugarcane food service packaging is sturdy and functional, with a high resistance to grease and water.
They can hold hot food, cold food and liquids, and are microwave and oven safe up to 220oC for 20 minutes.
Cleaner production
Sugarcane Is easier to pulp compared to wood, and consequently requires less energy and chemical inputs.
FDA approved
All BioPak pulp packaging products are produced in a facility certified to HACCP standards and all products conform to FDA food contact requirements.
Recyclable
Our sugarcane products can be recycled along with the mainstream paper and cardboard recycling if not contaminated with food residue.
