As 2016 is in our rear view mirror, I would like to personally thank all the BVSA volunteers for their tireless efforts! Volunteers are essential to the association’s work and community life. With-out volunteers, the task of operat-ing the association would be even greater.

The BVSA is always looking for volunteers to participate in Board Advisory Committees. Advisory Committees serve at the pleasure of the board and are formed to provide assistance as directed by the board. If you are interested in volunteering for the association on an Advisory Committee, you may want to start by attending a monthly meeting to see if it is something that interests you.

News from the BVSA BoardHappy New Year! Hoping that

your holidays were merry and bright. Thanks to all of you who helped to bring cheer to the Val-ley with the beautiful lights and décor that many of us were able to enjoy while driving around.

While many of us were enjoy-ing the blessing and joy of the holidays, Association staff has been hard at work. The Board of Directors began doing tours of the amenities. We started at the gun range, and culminated our first tour at the Oak Tree Coun-

try Club. We met the new Chef, and enjoyed one of his lunch creations. Our Board tours are an opportunity to examine each amenity and its operations. It also gives us a chance to identify concerns and receive feedback from the amenity managers. We look forward to continuing our tours in the new year.

The General Manager has been working with staff on the preparatory tasks necessary for our arduous budget process that begins in January. We invite and

encourage all members in good standing to attend the budget meetings. The budget meeting will begin with the Finance Ad-visory Committee and as the process nears the end, the Board of Directors host the meetings and provide input and final ap-proval.

The restoration of the large pool has begun. We are on schedule and hope to get the lap swimmers back in the water soon.

Our December Board meeting was productive. We were able to address several items. We voted to replace the underwater pool light and the pool heater while the surface restoration is in progress. The Whiting Center gym was in need of new overhead lights and the sauna heater was due for re-placement, as well. There was

also a CER for the lighting in the Mulligan Room dining area. The biggest item on our agenda, was to remodel the Whiting Center restroom/locker room, which has been approved. Nearly every one of these projects will provide improved energy efficiencies and cost savings.

New BVSA Executive Chef

As we wrap up a busy holi-day season and begin 2017, I thought it would be a good time to highlight some of the activity taking place within our BVSA Food and Beverage operations.

Some members may not be aware that we have a new Ex-ecutive Chef (yes that is him on the front cover!). Our past chef left in August and we are excit-ed that Chef Ross McKee has joined our team to bring profes-sional leadership and culinary creativity to Bear Valley Springs.

Chef Ross is a world-class cu-linarian with over two decades of culinary experience and an impressive background. He has been the Executive Chef at ho-tels and restaurants alike. He is passionate about delivering safe,

healthy food made from scratch with fresh ingredients. He is a gentleman and keenly focused on developing the employees in his charge to become culinary professionals. Within his first several weeks he has already generated dozens of positive comments from groups, mem-bers and employees.

One of the busiest times of the year for the BVSA Executive Chef is Thanksgiving through New Year’s Eve. Chef Ross start-ed just before Thanksgiving and has been busy planning and pro-ducing several banquet events each week since he started. Once we get through the busy holiday season, he will begin to work on modifying seasonal menus and continue the work we’ve done to improve kitchen efficiency and minimize the expenses associ-ated with delivering great meals at great prices. Our Food and Beverage Amenities have expe-rienced many positive chang-

es in the past few years and we look forward to the impact Chef Ross will have in our culinary employee development, kitchen operations and new menu offer-ings.

Happy Birthday to all our members celebrating a birthday in the month of January! Our birthday promotion in The Oaks Restaurant allows members and renters with amenity privileges to have a complimentary en-trée during the calendar month of their birthday. The birthday program requires members to register online at BVSA.org. Each month we serve nearly 150 birthday dinners. Because Bear Valley Springs is such a social community, the average person celebrating a birthday brings 3 or 4 friends to celebrate. The birthday program funds itself, as sales from the accompany-ing diners helps offset the costs incurred by the complimentary meal. This promotion creates a

great opportunity for members who have never dined in The Oaks Restaurant, to come in and experience the great food and service many of our “regu-lar” members have come to ap-preciate.

We continue to receive many positive comments and sugges-tions from our members and we want to extend our thanks to all of you who continue to support our Food and Beverage ameni-ties, since it is your continued support that ensures our suc-cess.

On the first Thursday of each month, the Food Service Advi-sory Committee meets to review our Food and Beverage Ame-nities and discuss ideas and/or challenges to improve and better serve our members. The committee serves to advise our Board of Directors regarding suggestions or recommenda-tions made during the monthly Board of Director meetings. All

Despite a rainy evening, we had a good turnout for the Christmas Party and opportunity drawing. Once again, this proved to be a ri-otous evening with lots of laugh-ter. The club furnished hams and the membership outdid them-selves with hardy casseroles, great salads and many, many delicious desserts.

The opportunity drawing was more fun than a “barrel of mon-keys.” There were many items, so there was something for every-one. As names were drawn, there were shouts of glee, “Oh good, I wanted that,” and groans of dis-appointment.

KCFD receives grant money for tree

mortality projects

The Kern County Fire Depart-ment was awarded three CAL FIRE grants on Friday, Dec. 2. Two of these grants, for $200,000 each, are tree mortality grants funded by the State Responsibil-ity Area Fire Prevention Fund. One will be used to remove dead trees within 300 feet of homes in the Bear Valley Springs com-munity. The grant only applies to pine trees and only in the tree mortality area of upper Deertrail and upper Paramount.

The other is for dead trees within 300 feet of homes and roads in the community of Alta Sierra. Work is expected to begin

on these projects in the Spring. Home owners who wish to par-ticipate will be required to fill out and return a Right of Entry permit, which is available on the Kern County Fire Department’s website.

The third grant is for a state-of-the-art, remote controlled, tracked chipper and transport trailer. This machine is able to get off the road and up into the for-est to treat fuels. This will be used throughout the County on tree mortality projects, fuel breaks, and other fuel reduction projects.

If you are a property own-er with dead pine trees on your property, you should apply now to the Natural Resources Conser-vation Service (NRCS) to receive financial assistance for dead tree removal. The funding comes from NRCS’s Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQUIP) for dead pine tree removal, treating or removing woody residue from dead or dying trees, thinning overstocked forest stands, and tree planting. You are most like-ly to obtain a share of next year’s funding if you apply as soon as possible.

To apply, interested applicants need to submit an application, meet program eligibility require-ments, and then approve what is to be implemented as well as ac-cept the payment rate. In order to be considered one’s property needs to be a minimum of one acre and be at least 100 feet wide. The amount awarded is on a per acre basis and is done on a cost share basis.

If you have a larger piece of property, you have an increased chance of being awarded fund-ing. Funding for tree removal on land within 100 feet from homes and other permanent structures will not be included. This is cost share type of program. NRCS allows you to also participate in other programs that provide as-sistance with dead tree removal.

Ladies Golf installs new board

Our new Board of Direc-tors for the Oak Tree Country Club Women’s Golf Club were sworn in on December 3rd at our Annual Awards Luncheon. The new officers are Dede Pot-vin – President/1st Vice Pres-ident, Joy Webber – 2nd Vice President, Kathy Chapman – Secretary, Lee Kapka – Trea-surer, Karen Dixon – Handicap Chair, and Eva Lance – WSC-GA Rep. They have a full year of activities ahead, are eager to get started and need all the members’ help to make this an-other successful year.

During the awards ceremo-ny, several members were hon-ored with special awards. The most coveted of our awards is the Most Improved Player of the Year. For 2016 they are Meg Prior and Caron Castner, 18-Hole and 9-Hole, respectively. They earned this award by low-ering their handicaps the most during the year. Congratula-tions to both!

Monetary awards were giv-en to winners of the Ringers and both the Wednesday and Friday playdays. Special skill awards were also handed out. For the 9-holers: Low Gross/Year - Caron Castner, Low Net/Year – Susan Tuttle, Low Putts/Year and Average Putts/Year – Marie Scammon. For the 18-holers: Low Gross/Year – Linda Cross, Low Net/Year – Diane Griffin, Low Putts/Year and Average Putts/Year – Kar-

en Dixon. The final recognition was to

the major tournament award winners who received their monetary certificates. Club Champion and Senior Club Champion was Linda Cross, President’s Cup winner was Bridget McGowan and Vice President’s Cup winner was Anita Gifford.

In the spirit of giving during the holiday season, the ladies from the club made a large donation of toys and gifts to families in need in Bear Valley Springs. The donations were collected by the BVS Police De-partment volunteers who will distribute them.

Nov. 17 marked the beginning of our series of winter away golf outings with a trip to everyone’s favorite, Crystalaire Country Club. Saturday, Nov. 19 was our an-nual Turkey Shoot Golf Tourna-ment with 92 golfers participat-ing in the fun event. The format is a nine-hole event were the player gets his or her nine-hole handicap plus 36, which is par for the nine holes. So if the golf-er was a 10 handicap, they would get 46 shots, (10 plus 36). When the ball stopped rolling on the 46th shot, that is where the play-ers round would end. So if a play was playing poorly, their round might end on the 7th or 8th hole.

If they were playing really good, they might end on the 10th or 11th hole.

These players had shots left over after finishing nine holes and kept going: Scott Smith, Don Ingram, Matt Gil, Kim Burke, Mel Beck, John Walz, Bill Hobbs, Al Peyton, Craig Jackson, Brian Kitt and Tony Miszklevitz. Ken Mitchell finished one foot from the hole and John made it into the hole on #10.

The following finished or came very close to finishing the 9th hole, enough to win a turkey: Sandy Williams, Gary Lethcoe, Mike Chiarini, Kathy Chapman, Dick Taylor, Theresa Taylor, Tam-my Gore, Vic Keesey Jr., Jon Rep-pert, Leslie Craven, Sam Strong, Grace Strong, Randy Barker, Lantie Bell, Ric Zanutto, Jon Bar-telmie and Keven Margrave.

All in all we paid out 32 actual frozen 16-pound Butterballs. We all owe Don Morrison and Alb-ertson’s for giving us a great deal on the fowls that were presented. THANKS DON!!!!

On Jan. 17, Vickie Monroe, Wildlife Biologist with the Cal-ifornia Department of Fish and Wildlife, will be giving a presen-tation about “Living Responsibly With Wildlife (Keep Me Wild)” at the Bear Valley Springs Horse-men’s Association meeting at 7 p.m. in the Equestrian Center Lounge.

This meeting is the result of residents being upset by the many killings of wildlife in BVS. The killing of Big Daddy, and more recently the killing of a doe for eating apples off a resident’s tree, the shooting of a bobcat for kill-ing “free range” chickens in a res-

ident’s yard and the sighting of a deer with an arrow in it’s shoulder are just a few incidents of which I am aware.

Many residents are wanting to know what the BVSA rules are, what jurisdiction the police have over this matter and when does the CA Department of Fish and Wildlife intervene. What does living responsibly with Wildlife mean? These and other questions will be answered by this presen-tation. The meeting is open to all residents, you do not need to be a member of the Horsemen’s As-sociation to attend. Everyone is welcome. As everyone is aware, one of the great things about this valley is the extensive 55 mile long trail system that we have at our fingertips.

We would like to remind all riders that we recommend staying off the trails a minimum of three days after a big storm to allow the trails to dry. This will help keep

the trails from getting damaged and is also a good safety measure for all riders and horses. Always be safe and cautious while rid-ing in possibly dangerous winter conditions. If there are areas on the trails that need attention it is best to take a picture of the area, document the location, Google Earth or GPS are all good ways to relay any trail issues. Please email to [email protected]. We will ad-dress concerns on the next sched-uled Trail crew day or as soon as weather allows.

During times of rains the Equestrian center management closes all outdoor arenas. We do this to preserve the footing which is a great expense to redo when damaged.

The Milano arena (covered arena) is intended to be a multi-purpose arena and is open at all times. With only one arena avail-able to riders of all disciplines during inclement weather, we need to be courteous to each oth-er and abide by the arena rules. The Arena rules are posted by

the arena gate. Speed events are not allowed in the covered arena at any time. This includes, but is not limited to, sliding stops, hard spins, barrels, poles, or jumping over 3 ft. Pattern work is permit-ted at a slow rate of speed only. Please adhere to these rules when riding in this arena. You can find these rules in our Association rules (Article 6).

Please be courteous and safe at all times. Remember what may not spook your horse may spook someone else’s.

News from the Equestrian Center

As you are reading this, the Equestrian Center staff would like to wish everyone a very Happy and Safe New Year!!

In wrap up for 2016, a huge part of our summer activity success comes from the great horse clubs here in Bear Valley. Everyone had a great time watching all the shows and play days this past year. We would like to thank all the volunteers from the clubs and the clubs themselves for sponsoring great events here at the Equestrian Center. We are already looking forward to all the great things that will be coming for this next

summer season.As we move into winter and the

temperatures drop below freezing on a regular basis, all water to the barns is shut off. The Staff takes extra precautions to ensure that the water system is shut down properly to help avoid any breakage of the pipes. Please do not at any time turn on any of the water mains or open/close any of the faucets while the water is off. The restrooms by the barn remain open and usable. Thank you for your cooperation.

With winter come colds and flu. Horses get colds and flu just as humans do. If you are visiting the Equestrian Center, the Management and Staff ask that you please do not pet or feed any of the horses. As with people, we can spread cold and flu germs

from one horse to another just by petting it, so look but please don’t pet as we try to ensure colds or the flu are not passed and our horse’s here at the Equestrian Center stay happy and healthy.

A New Year means that we need new signed liability release forms for ALL equestrians in Bear Valley; this includes property owners as well as guests. Anyone who rides on the property at the Equestrian Center or uses any of the trails must sign a new release form, this is an insurance requirement. The form must be filled out in its entirety, including

the front and back, and the emergency contact portion. The form can be downloaded at www.bvsa.org, obtained at the Equestrian Center office, or at the BVSA office. Releases for minors must be completed by a parent or legal guardian; grandparents cannot sign the release for their grandchildren. The forms are to be turned into the Equestrian Center office. (Section 603, Article K).

Happy New Year to all and I hope you had a Merry Christmas! The Greenhorns held a Year End Ranch Versatility Event orga-nized by our own Karen Dixon and Judged by Chris and Kendra Cummings. Wow! What a great event, thank you Karen for a job well done. And a huge thanks to the Cummings for the cattle all year and great prizes for our event. We had a lot of fun and look forward to next year!

SECTION 901. Safety 4. Fishing is prohibited at locations adjacent to the golf course that are in line of balls driven from the course. (Added 01/10/17) 5. PURPOSE AND EFFECT OF THE PROPOSED CHANGES To add language strengthening safety policies in and around the lake

area.SECTION 1500. GOLF COURSE (a) Use of the golf course is restricted to Members of the Association, their families, guests and assignees of Members. Guests must be accompanied by a Member unless the Member obtains a Guest Pass for the guest. See Section 1504, Member Responsibilities. Golf Course hours of operation are dawn to one half hour after dusk. Members shall notify the Pro Shop of their rounds played outside of the Pro Shop hours of operation. (Amended 03/10/08, Amended 01/10/16)

TOXINS: ARE THEY IN YOUR HOME?Every month we like to evaluate our

elderly home to see how we can keep chemicals to a minimum and also keep a clean environment. The prob-lem is that we generally are not very educated on what contains an array of harmful chemicals other than the ob-vious ones which are in our cleaning products.

Making an effort to eliminate as many chemical as we can will benefit our residents as well as our caregivers.

This month I would like to bring at-tention to chemicals and toxins that are in our mattress that we sleep on. This should be very important to those with babies or children since crib bed-ding, pajamas and mattresses are full of flame retardant toxins.

Organic bedding may seem like a trend, but the fact is that some of the worst materials are in traditional mat-tresses. Here are a few: Boric Acid, Formaldehyde, Polyurethane foam, flame retardants. Imagine sleeping on this array of toxins.

The better option would be organic materials that are not grown or raised with synthetic chemicals or genet-

ically modified organisms. You can find mattresses and bedding made of organic cotton and wool (wool being a natural flame retardant) that meet fire codes. You can even find natural latex made from rubber trees. Most traditional mattresses are full of petro-chemicals that off gas into your air that you breathe.

Another thing that may be lingering in your traditional mattress are dust mites. This may be true of your pillows too. If your old comfy pillow that’s over 6 months old may be dense and heavy because its full of dust mite fe-cal pellets from eating your dead skin and hair. GROSS.

Fall and winter months are a prob-lem because dust mites are multi-plying in the wet, warm, closed up house, causing allergies and sick-nesses. A typical mattress can contain thousands of dustmites. They are not visible to the naked eye.

Signs of mites are: scratchy eyes, al-lergies, headache, runny nose, nasal congestion. Do you shake your blan-kets or bedspreads? Well, you just sent dried mite feces into the air, making allergy symptoms worse. Sleep well.

Our meal of the Month was: Belgian waffles, lemon butter, and lingonberry jam, maple bacon, fresh kiwi, pine-apple, apple salad with honey lime

juice, and Hawaiian hazelnut coffee.The answer to the question of the

month was: Debbie Reynolds.We have been having so much fun

with Mrs. Burt and her art projects. The ladies really look forward to her art instruction and they work hard on their projects. They are so pretty and they do such a good job. I am so im-pressed.

If you come visit on an icy or snowy day, please use the stairs instead of the ramp, if possible. The ramp can be slippery. Call ahead and we can open the garage during bad weather so you can avoid it all together.
