A Hot Dogged PursuitIt has become a Fourth of July
tradition, along with fireworks, parades and picnics. It’s theNathan’s Famous InternationalHot Dog Eating Contest, wherethousands gather at the flagshiprestaurant on New York’s ConeyIsland boardwalk to witness afeeding frenzy that is broadcastlive on ESPN. The competitiveeaters have 10 minutes to eat asmany hot dogs as they can. Therecord is 69 hot dogs, set in 2013.

Cookout in Josephine’s Kitchen! Our chefs will prepare atraditional holiday lunch for ourresidents, staff and guests. Funand delicious food is guaranteedfor all!
Independence DayOn July 4, 1776, the
Continental Congress approvedthe Declaration of Independence.A few days later, on July 8, the firstpublic reading of the documentoccurred when Col. John Nixonread it to an assembled crowd inPhiladelphia.
Cool as a CucumberIt may be the hottest time of
the year, but there are ways tokeep your cool both outdoors andindoors.
Plan outside activities in themorning, before the sun heatsthings up. Dress appropriately bywearing loose-fitting, lightweightclothing in light colors. Some newsynthetic fabrics are speciallydesigned to wick away moisturefrom perspiration and help youfeel cooler. Make sure you replacethat moisture by drinking plentyof water.
Eat light meals, such as saladsand fruit. They are easy to digest, and produce such as lettuce, cucumbers and watermelon aremostly water and help withhydration.
If you are trying to stay coolindoors, first block the sun.Closing blinds or curtains cangreatly reduce the amount of heatgetting into your home.
On especially hot days, placefrozen water bottles or a bowl ofice cubes in front of a fan to coolthe airflow.
Consider running the airconditioner and a fan at the sametime, especially at night while youare sleeping. You can set the airconditioner at lower power andstill feel cool because the airconditioner lowers humiditywhile the fan moves heat awayfrom you.
Another trick is to make a “cold
compress.” Fill an old tube sockwith rice, tie off the end and put itin the freezer. At bedtime, slide itbetween the sheets. Rice willretain the cold for hours.
To Your Health:Apple a Day
“An apple a day keeps thedoctor away” has some truth to it.In a recent study, people whobegan eating one apple every dayexperienced a 40 percent drop inLDL cholesterol, which is the“bad” kind that can hardenarteries. Enjoy an apple inJosephine’s Kitchen!

Mind Exercise Gamesfor Seniors
The brain is a complex organ that, like other muscles in the body,
elderly seniors need to keepstimulated by exercising withgames and crafts in order to
enhance the growth anddevelopment of new nerve cellsand neural function. Exercising
the brain helps:• Reduce loss of gray matter
(the nuts and bolts ofmemory)
• Promotes neurogenesis(development of new braincells)
• Improves attention spansand the ability to concentrate
• Strengthens brain synapses(communication pathways)
• Increases blood flow (moreoxygen means healthier cells)
Okay, so who doesn’t want toincrease brain function, regardlessof age? Exercising the brain ormind can be achieved in anumber of ways, including butnot limited to:
• Learn a new skill – This canbe a language, a hobby or aconcept. The morechallenging, the better. Takeup painting. Learn the piano.Take a community class oncrime scene investigation. Dosomething to stimulate, activate and exercise yourbrain to think in new ways.
• Create a scrapbook – thistype of elder activity helpsrebuild memories andmemory skills that may havegotten rusty over the years.
• Socialize! – Socializing orgroup activity for the elderlyis a mental activity! Engagein social interactions at leastweekly, more frequently ifpossible.
• Laugh! – Laughter really isone of the best medicinesaround. A good belly laughevery day helps to releasedopamine, that ‘feel good’hormone in the brain.Laughter also helps stimulatethe brain and enhanceslearning.
• Engage in ‘Thinking Games’– such as crossword puzzles,Sudoku or chess.
Protect Your HandsThe skin on the backs of your
hands is thin and prone to sundamage that can later appear aswrinkles and dark spots. Whenapplying sunscreen, don’t forget toprotect these areas, too.
