THE VILLAGE NEWS BELMONT VILLAGE OF WEST LAKE HILLS DECEMBER 2017 Greetings! The holiday decorations are up for all to enjoy - we’re ready to celebrate! Festivities have been planned beginning with our Resident & Family holiday party Thursday December 7th followed by our Hanukkah Happy Hour Thursday December 14th , Employee Party Friday December 15th and the Belmont Village Chorus performance during Happy Hour on Thursday December 21st. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, Chef Mike and his team will serve an elegant, seasonal meal for you and your loved ones to enjoy. Following dinner New Year’s Eve, please join us from 6:00–7:30pm for live music, champagne and sweets as we ring in the New Year. Derived from the Old English phrase ‘Cristes Mæsse,’ ~ meaning the ‘mass of Christ’ ~ the celebration of Christmas was likely not widespread until the Middle Ages. Before that time, birthdays were rarely noted and early church leaders opposed commemorating the occasion since they believed the birth of Christ should not be celebrated in the same manner as the festivals of pagan gods. What’s interesting about this is no one is sure when Jesus was born as the exact date is not mentioned in the Bible. It’s believed that December 25th was a date picked by the Catholic church to eclipse the festivities of a rival pagan festival. We have the Druids to thank for mistletoe, Scandinavians for holly and berries and Martin Luther for Christmas trees. Just a quick reminder that the deadline for contributions to the Employee Appreciation Fund is Wednesday December 13th. As most of you are aware, Belmont Village has a no-tipping, no-gift giving policy in place, an industry standard. The Employee Appreciation Fund was established to provide a way for our residents and families to thank our non-management employees. Please know that contributions are voluntary. For many, there will be multiple holiday obligations beyond Belmont Village. Maybe we won’t get through everything on our “to do” lists so let’s agree to “don’t sweat the small stuff” and focus instead on taking time with our loved ones, celebrating together and giving thanks for everything we do have. Peace and joy to you and your family this holiday season! ~Donna OUR TEAM Executive Director Donna Hermann [email protected] Dir. of Resident Care Services Tina Mahan [email protected] Director of Memory Care Programming Megan Ris [email protected] Activity Program Coordinator Lucinda Farrah [email protected] Human Resource Generalist Jessica Bradshaw [email protected] Chef Manager Mike Cross [email protected] Community Relations Peggy Bulger [email protected] Community Relations Jeana Hinch [email protected] Building Engineer Scott Schlicke [email protected] Donna Hermann, E.D.

CIRCLE OF FRIENDSSPOTLIGHT

This month in Circle ofFriends we had a blastcelebrating Halloween. We tooka haunted tour of spots in Austinand competed in the costumecontest at Belmont. We alsoenjoyed an outing to the MexicArte Museum downtown. Wesaw works of art by Frida Kahloand Diego Rivera, and receiveda history lesson from one of themuseum curators on the life ofthe two artists. We had funmaking fall-themed crafts likedonut-hole acorns, and to top itoff we ate them for ourafternoon snack. In the comingmonth we look forward toreflecting on what we arethankful for and enjoying aThanksgiving feast.

NEIGHBORHOODSPOTLIGHT

We had a fun-filled month inthe neighborhood. We’ve donelots of fall themed activities inpreparation for Thanksgivingand we even made works of artincorporating leaves that wegathered from the trees outsideon the patio. We also plantedsome flowers in the ceramicpots we painted last month. Wewater them every few days tokeep them looking nice. We hada visiting veterinarian bring hisdog Apollo by to visit with ustoo. He was very well-behavedand when we gave him treats hewould stand on two legs, rollover, and play dead. In thecoming month we are lookingforward to all the magic of theholidays and lots of parties tocelebrate the season.

NURSES’ CORNERHypothyroidism—also called

underactive thyroid—is the mostcommon thyroid disorder. Ithappens when your thyroidgland doesn’t produce enoughthyroid hormone, which isessential because thyroidhormone helps regulateimportant body processes, suchas your metabolism. But withlow thyroid function, these bodyprocesses slow down.

The prevalence of thyroiddisorders increases with age andnumerous morphological andphysiological changes of thethyroid gland during the processof aging are well-known. It is tobe stressed that the clinicalcourse of thyroid diseases in theelderly differs essentially fromthat observed in youngerindividuals, because symptomsare more subtle and are oftenattributed to normal aging.

Hypothyroidism symptomsusually develop incrediblyslowly; it can take years forthem to show up. Also, somesymptoms mimic symptoms ofother diseases, such asfibromyalgia and rheumatoidarthritis.

Key hypothyroidismsymptoms include constipation, depression, and fatigue. Pale, dry skin; sensitivity to cold; jointpain; elevated cholesterol levels;brittle fingernails and hair; andunexplained weight gain, memory problems, loss ofappetite, are other commonsymptoms.

Multiple factors maycontribute to hypothyroidism,including:

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis: Thisautoimmune disease is the mostcommon cause ofhypothyroidism.

medications: Certainmedications, such as lithium, cancause hypothyroidism.

pregnancy: Hypothyroidismcan develop during or afterpregnancy.

treatment forhyperthyroidism: People whohave hyperthyroidism(overactive thyroid) are treatedwith radioactive iodine therapy, which impairs thyroid functionand can cause hypothyroidism.

thyroid surgery: If yourthyroid gland is removed, youcan’t make thyroid hormone, soyou’ll need to take thyroidhormone replacement.

Doctors use blood tests todiagnose hypothyroidism, includingtests to measure the amount ofthyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)and free thyroid hormone levels inyour body. If the TSH test resultsare normal but you still havehypothyroidism symptoms, yourdoctor can test for free T4—athyroid hormone—in your body. Also, the anti-thyroid peroxidase testcan determine whetherhypothyroidism is caused byHashimoto’s thyroiditis.

Once diagnosed withhypothyroidism, you’ll need to takemedication (thyroid hormonereplacement) to replace your missingthyroid hormone. Thyroidmedication—usually a daily dose oflevothyroxine in pill form—is safeand generally very effective attreating hypothyroidism. You mayalso need regular blood tests to see ifyou need to adjust yourlevothyroxine dose. Some commonbrand names for levothyroxine areLevothroid, Levoxyl, and Synthroid

You can live a full, normal life ifyou continue to take your medicineto control hypothyroidism. Ahealthy lifestyle—incorporatingnutritious foods and moderateexercise—can also help you bettermanage your hypothyroidism.
