“Madison remained full of hope, love for others, and bravery for her fight! She faced this challenge with her head held high and never backed down from the fight. Now, we want to help others do the same!” Shannon and Levi Knebusch

"We all want sunny days and shady trees, but sometimes we have to make do with the rain and wait for the rainbow that follows!!!"

-Madison Knebusch

Madison Knebusch’s story is a journey from the pinnacle of health to the depths of suering and struggle. As an active 8th grader, Madison Knebusch was enjoying life and beginning to prepare for high school. Madison began to fall ill and after numerous visits to various physicians and hospitals, Madison was diagnosed with a cancer so rare that it had never been recorded in medical history. She began chemotherapy on June 1, 2010, coupled with inten-sive radiation to shrink the cue ball sized tumor in her throat and numerous lesions on her lungs. Halfway through the course of her treatments, Madison endured a 13-hour surgery to remove the tumor and rebuild her throat. After a week, it was determined that the tissue borrowed from her thigh was not viable, and Madison endured another six-hour surgery to replace the tissue with samples taken from her arm. Because of her compromised immuni-ty, she contracted an infection that hospitalized her for a month and had a very close call with death. Madison slowly began to recover after losing over 50 pounds during the course of her treatment. After a three-month rest, Madison gained enough strength to begin the process of removing the spots on her lungs and underwent two, four-hour thoracotomies within three weeks of each other. Madison started her sophomore year of high school fully believing that her cancer was gone, but a week prior to her sixteenth birthday, a missed tumor on her lung ruptured and spread the cancer throughout her body. Her right lung was completely engulfed by a tumor the size of a small watermelon, and other pain-ful lesions began to grow in both legs, one foot, her back, and behind her ear. Madison began another round of chemotherapy but this time it had no eect.

On January 10, 2012, a new tumor erupted in Madi-son’s brain. On January 12 of that same year, Madi-son passed away at home surrounded by her friends and family. At the age of 16, Madison left an indelible mark on the lives of everyone that knew her. She faced her cancer with poise and grace, and remained steadfast in her faith in God. She made all of those around her better people and taught us how to love and enjoy life to the fullest, even in the face on insurmountable odds. Before Madison passed away, she instructed us to donate her body to the Texas Tech Health Science Center in hopes that possibly she could save another individual from the tremendous suer-ing which she endured.

The MTK Foundation (501(c)3 nonprofit organization) was established to help support the families and children of those that have been inflicted with pediat-ric cancers in the Texas Panhandle. As the only dedi-cated pediatric cancer charity in the panhandle, we help raise awareness of this terrible disease in hopes that one day a cure can be found. Our goal is to

provide information to those who are newly diag-nosed about treatment options, support facilities, other local charities, and counseling centers. We also support the continued education of local high school students by providing scholarships to those that exhibit similar character traits as Madison to honor her and the life she led.
