    Pastoral Letter

    Dearly beloved,

Greetings to you in the Lord. I am sure the Lent season is helping you come closer to God through your special spiritual exercises. My ministry in Dubai was good and fruitful. God took and used me there by providing this opportunity of visiting another country. Thank you to all of you for your en-couragement and prayer support. I appreciate the Area Fellowships for won-derfully leading Friday Lenten Services. Thanks to Bro. Vijay Santhaseelan for conducting the 40-40 prayers every morning. Once again this year we will have our United Easter Service of the Bangalore Methodist Churches at Bald-win’s grounds on Easter Day. Our honorable Bishop N.L. Karkare delivers God’s Word. Please attend this meeting and be blessed. Let all these help us to face the Holy Week with deeper meaning. Let us receive the power of Res-urrection in our lives from the God of Easter.

‘Jesus rising from the dead’ is not for a demonstration to impress on the people but to do the very important thing for humanity, to set the path-way of heaven for them. Jesus’ death and resurrection is the only way out of hell and way in for heaven to us. Following Jesus, the first-fruit of resurrec-tion is to follow heaven. Further, although heaven is a free gift for us, it is giv-en as a reward to achieve. That was the condition our Lord Jesus Christ him-self took on him. Jesus achieved the reward of resurrection for obeying his Father while in earth, which is the way for us to follow. Jesus had to set a tar-get, then focus on what he should do, face Satan the agent of tests and with-stand, then reach Cross the altar of Sacrifice. Finally comes the reward of Res-urrection. Satan constantly tried to divert him from his attention of going to the Cross. But firm decision and resolve of Jesus helped him to taste the vic-tory. This leads us to some foundational questions. Is heaven made our clear target? Is there a decision made already to reach that ultimate point? It requires sacrificing and disowning of anything and everything at the feet of Cross. In such a decision lies the power of resurrection. Today, the teaching of sacrifice, giving up and disowning does not sell much. The message of Cross is interpreted for worldly gains instead of godly gains. Paul gently ex-horts us in this context to set our minds on things above. “If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above,

where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things

above, not on things on the earth.” Colossians 3:1-2

Let us look into the Scriptures once again. Let us seek the things that are above. No one can serve two masters - both God and mammon together. May our meditation of Cross be fruitful in these lines this month. I am sure the VBS programmes that are coming up in April are going to greatly excite the kids of our church and neighbourhood. We are going to have 5 VBS pro-grammes in and through our Church. May the Lord give us a rich harvest through these programmes. I encourage all the members of the congregation to generously, willingly and voluntarily involve, contribute and support the very important VBS ministries in this month. Grace be with you always.

Missionary Profile Mrs. Jhansi Praveen FANNY CROSBY - Blind but not bound Birth: Frances Jane Crosby was born on March 24,1820 in the vil-lage of Brewster, about 50 miles north of New York. She was the only daughter of John and Mercy Crosby. At six weeks old, Fanny caught a cold and developed in-flammation in her eyes. Homemade medicine made of mustard paste was applied to treat the inflamma-tion. It is thought that this procedure damaged her optic nerves and blinded her, but modern physi-cians think that her blindness was more likely con-genital and, given her age, may simply not have been noticed by her parents. Her father died when she was only six months old, so she was raised by her mother and maternal grandmother Eunice Pad-dock Crosby. When Fanny was three, the family moved to New York. Childhood and Early life: Fanny was always a happy and con-tented child. This contentment is seen in her very first poem which

she composed at the tender age of eight. "It has been the motto of

my life," she says. The poem reads thus:

"O what a happy soul am I! Although I cannot see, I am resolved that in this world Contented I will be; How many blessings I enjoy That other people don't! To weep and sigh because I'm blind, I cannot, and I won't.''

This has continued to be her philosophy. She later remarked: "It seemed intended by the blessed providence of God that I should be blind all my life, and I thank him for the freedom. If perfect earthly sight were offered me tomorrow I would not accept it. I might not have sung hymns to the praise of God if I had been distracted by the beautiful and interesting things about me." Fanny memorized five chapters of the Bible each week from age 10, with the encouragement of her grandmother. By age 15, she had memorized the four gospels, the Pentateuch, the Book of Proverbs, the Song of Solomon, and many of the Psalms. From 1832, a music teacher came twice a week to give singing lessons to her and some of the other children.

Education: Her mother's hard work paid off. Shortly before her fifteenth birthday, Crosby was sent to the recently founded New York Institute for the Blind, which would be her home for 23 years: 12 as a student, 11 as a teacher. During that time she learned to play the piano, organ, harp, and guitar, and became a good soprano singer. By age 23, Crosby was addressing the Congress and mak-ing friendships with presidents.

Marriage: Another member of the NYIB, Alexander van Alstine, who was also blind married Fanny Crosby in March 5, 1858. He was one of New York's best organists and even wrote the music for many of Crosby's hymns. Their only daughter was born in 1859, but died tragically in her sleep as an infant. Fanny’s husband became increasingly reclusive after the death of his daughter. America's Hymn Queen: Fanny Crosby wrote nearly 9000 best remembered hymns. But she did not begin her hymn writing until she was in her forties. Publisher and hymn writer William B. Brad-bury was unhappy with the quality of many of the hymns that were submitted to him for publication. He heard of Fanny's talent, and after verifying her ability, promptly hired her to write hymns for his company. She was under contract to submit three hymns a week to her pub-lisher and often wrote six or seven a day (for a dollar or two each), many of which became incredibly popular. Famous Hymns: Fanny knew she needed God's help in this new endeavour. Fanny's life was God-centred. When she was not en-gaged in song writing, she worked in churches and missions. She once described her hymn writing process this way: "It may seem a little old-fashioned, always to begin one's work with prayer, but I never undertake a hymn without first asking the good Lord to be my inspiration." And God provided inspiration from all areas of Fanny's life. One evening at a mission service a young man told her that he had promised to meet his mother in heaven. She went home imme-diately and wrote the wonderful hymn, “Rescue the Perishing”. While passing by a prisoner, she heard the man cry, O Lord, don't pass me by, which quickly became the hymn "Pass Me Not, O Gen-tle Saviour." When her friend Howard Doan played a melody for her and said, "See if it says anything to you," her joyful reply was, "Why, that says, 'Safe in the arms of Jesus!’” Within a half an hour, she had finished the poem. Her most famous hymn, "Blessed Assur-ance," is a personal testimony of her salvation. Fanny could write very complex hymns and compose music with a more classical structure, but she preferred to write simple, sentimental verses that could be used for evangelism Later life and Death: In 1880, aged 60, Fanny made "a commit-ment to Christ to serve the poor" and to devote the rest of her life to home missionary work. She was active in speaking engagements and missionary work among America's urban poor almost until she died. She continued to write poetry up to her death, a month shy of her ninety-fifth birthday. “Take the world, but give me Jesus; in His cross my trust shall be, till with clearer brighter vision, face to face my Lord I see.” "You will reach the river brink, some sweet day, bye and bye," was her last stanza. She once said, "When I get to heav-en, the first face that shall ever gladden my sight will be that of my Saviour”.

“It is not enough to have a song on your lips. You must also have a song in your heart.” Fanny Crosby.

Testimony Mrs Shoba Barolia To God be the Glory, for He saved me, a wretched sinner.

I am not worthy of God’s grace that I have received abundantly in my life. I was born and brought up in a Roman Catholic family. We attended church regularly and I also attended catechism classes on the insistence of my grandmother though I did not like to attend these classes. In 1987, a friend of my father invited us to the Laymen’s Evangelical Fellowship (LEF). We started attending this church every Sunday as a family and I attended the Sunday classes. I had never read the Bible before, and as I started reading the Word of God, I found new truths and God’s Word touched me and cleansed me. I confessed my sins to the pastor aunty, for my disobedience I asked my par-ents for forgiveness, for exams in which I had copied – I confessed to my teachers and for the times I had travelled without a ticket, I paid back to the Railways. I reconciled with friends with whom I had had misunderstanding.

The years 1994 to 96 were a challenge to me. I attended the Youth Retreats conducted by LEF. The life of Joseph and David’s walk with God chal-lenged me. The church taught me what a life of strict Christian discipline meant and for this I am still greatly thankful. God spoke to me through Isaiah 52:1 – ‘Awake, awake, Zion, clothe yourself with strength! Put on your gar-ments of splendor, Jerusalem, the holy city. The uncircumcised and defiled will not enter you again.’ I determined to let go of my sins and cleanse myself with God’s help. I loved to read the Bible, pray and share my testimony to my friends. During this time, I was baptized. By the grace of God, I completed my post graduation. When I went through trials and temptations, I clung to God’s promises and always remembered the song “My God can do anything, any-thing, yes anything…”

The circumstances that followed in my life and family were not always easy. I got married to a man from the Hindu faith. Life has its up and downs but God is my refuge and strength and my constant pillar of support, and I know that because of Him, I can face tomorrow. God has blessed us with two children, a son and daughter. By God’s grace, I am bringing my children to church. Some of my friends in BMC, especially from the WSCS, are supportive of me and pray for me and my family. I am grateful to God for all of them. I pray that God would work miraculously in my family and that one day we, as a family, will be able to serve God together and testify that Christ is the only Saviour who can redeem sinners. I pray my husband should come to know the love of Christ and that my son and daughter should grow firm in the faith and learn that Christ and Christ alone is enough for them to live and to face tomorrow. I humbly request you all to pray for me and my family. Praise be to God.

    1. AROUND THE WORLD - That the selection of Pastors, leaders and all will be done according to the LORD's will (Acts 14:23) and those already part of it may work to fulfill their calling (Colossians 4:17).

    MISSION ORGANIZATIONS

COMPASSION INTERNATIONAL - Operated in India for about 30 years bringing in ~292 crores a year supporting 344 NGOs (The Hindu, 3rd Feb 2017). ~1,45,000 children to losing sponsorship because of this (Christianity Today, 9th December 2016). Let us continue to pray that they will fulfill their vision of "Healing and Wholeness in the spirit of Jesus Christ" and their daily mis-sion "to provide quality, holistic care to all people and train others to do the same, sharing the love of Jesus Christ, drawing people to him and growing together into a mature community." Let us also pray that all needs of the hospital will be met by Indian Christians.

WORLD 4. SOUTH KOREA - Their elected president in 2012, Park Geun-hye, is now

impeached and has vacated the presidential palace. Let us pray that a Godly leader will take charge and that the Protestant Christian percent-age which has largely remained unchanged since the 1980s (http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2014/08/12/6-facts-about-christianity-in-south-korea/) will grow rapidly and be honoured (2 Thessalonians 3:1).

Let us pray for a balanced approach throughout the world, where neither is any child abused (Ephesians 6:4) nor failed to be corrected for any wrong done (Proverbs 23:13).

    6. SYRIA - Twin bombings on 11th March left over 70 dead, many of whom were Iraqi pilgrims who had traveled to visit Shia shrines. Many pro-government security forces were also killed. In April 1st week, more than 100 people were killed by chemical attack, wherein many innocent chil-dren lost their lives. 9. GOVERNMENTS FORMED IN 5 STATES - New governments have been formed in UP, Uttarakhand, Goa, Manipur and Punjab. Let us pray that as per Psalm 2:10,11, our rulers and judges will be wise, instructed, serve the LORD with fear and rejoice with trembling.

    10. EDUCATIONAL FREEDOM - Praise our LORD for all the Christian educa-tional institutions running in the country. Let us pray that we will have true educational freedom and moves like making Bhagavad Gita, even in the guise of moral teaching, or any such text compulsory will not be there. Let us also pray that we Christians will not just stop at running ed-ucational institutions but write relevant curriculums, far better than CBSE or any board, even in colleges and Universities (Daniel 1:20) and glorify our LORD through it.

    11. SANITATION WORKERS - Last month 3 sanitation workers were suffocat-ed to death in Kaggadasapura main road in CV Raman Nagar, pray for the bereaved families. Quotations - The Cross

Taking up my ‘cross’ means a life voluntarily surrendered to God - A W Pink

As Christ struggled up Calvary’s hill and bled upon it, His aim was to erad-icate Self-love, and implant the love of God in the hearts of men. One can only increase as the other decreases - Walter J Chantry

God proved his love on the Cross. When Christ hung, and bled, and died, it was God saying to the World ‘I love you’ - Billy Graham

The Christian community is a community of the cross, for it has been brought into being by the cross, and the focus of its worship is the Lamb once slain, now glorified - John Stott

In Jesus Christ on the cross there is refuge; there is safety, there is shel-ter, and all the power of sin upon our track cannot reach us when we have taken the shelter under the cross that atones for our sins - AC Dixon

City Life – Persecutions (Perceived and Real) for a Christian and our Response - Mr Dilip

When I have reflected on things which have/are not going as I want, be it my person-al, family, professional or spiritual life, I am convicted of some wrong which I have done because of which I am reaping the consequences. The verse I am reminded is “For what credit is there if you sin and are punished, and you endure it?...“ (1 Peter 2:20a). It shows how far personally I am yet to go before there is the Christian suffer-ing because of doing the right thing, as in the second part of the same verse, “But when you do what is good and suffer, if you endure it, this brings favor with God.” (1 Peter 2:20b)

Today, large cities are being formed in countries across the world. Authority too is being centralized to an extent. In older times, kings used to make decisions affecting people across their country without heeding to anyone’s advice (1 Chronicles 21:2-4), or even on the advice of a single person (Esther 3:11-13). Now, though there are elected representatives, one law being passed in parliament, or an ordinance or a rule change through notification affects people throughout the country.

Some such decisions by our government, like stopping foreign funds to certain organ-izations, requiring elaborate documents and implementing those rules only in cases they want, have affected certain sections of society.

Persecution is a reality in Christian life. It is mentioned very clearly in the Bible.

“And ye shall be hated of all men for My name's sake: but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.” (Mark 13:13)

“Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake.” (Luke 6:22)

“Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.” (2 Timo-thy 3:12)

My father-in-law once recalled a conversation with an acquaintance from a non-Christian faith. The acquaintance mentioned that Christians should have a higher standard in general because there is clear Bible teaching and more so an explanation of that from the pulpit on Sundays. He may not have known Amos 3:2, but our LORD has said the same “You only have I known of all the families of the earth: therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities.” The reasoning behind why our LORD chooses the more perceived wicked in our sight to punish us has been answered centuries ago (Habakkuk 1 and 2).

Nearly seventy years after our country’s independence from foreign rules on our soil, it is worth reflecting on whether every incident is persecution because we are just or whether our LORD is trying to convey something for us to change. Here is only a sam-ple of the areas we may need to introspect and take corrective action.

TRUE DISCIPLESHIP - An extract from the book ‘A good foundation’ by Bro. Zac Poonen

When Jesus told His apostles to go into every nation and to make disciples, they had no doubt in their minds as to what He meant (Matthew 28:19). For He had already explained what it meant to be His disciple. Luke 14:25 - 35 reveals most clearly the three conditions of discipleship. There Jesus speaks about a man who having laid a foundation for a tower, couldn’t complete it, because he was unable to pay the cost of construction (verses 28–30). That proves that it does cost something to be a disciple. Jesus told us to sit down first and count that cost before even starting to build. God doesn’t want us to wait for many years after our sins are forgiven, before understanding what discipleship really means. Jesus told people about the cost of discipleship as soon as they came to Him. He said that a believer who was unwilling to be a disciple was as useless to God as salt that had lost its savour (Luke 14:35).

    1. ‘Hating’ our Relatives (Luke 14:26). The first condition of discipleship is that we must cut off the natural, inordi-nate love that we have for our relatives. Jesus said “If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple” (Luke 14:26). Those are strong words. What does it mean to ‘hate’? To hate is the same as to kill (1 John 3:15). What we are asked to put to death here is the natural affection that we have for our relatives. Does that mean that we are not to love them? No. It certainly doesn’t mean that. When we give up our human affection for them, God will replace it with Divine love. Our love for our relatives will then be pure – in the sense that God will always be first in our affections, and not our relatives. Many don’t obey God because they are afraid to offend their father, mother or wife etc. The Lord demands first place in our life. And if we don’t give Him that place, we can’t be His disciples at all. Look at Jesus’ own example. Although He loved His widowed mother, yet He never allowed her to influence Him away from the perfect will of His Father, even in small matters. We see an example of this at the marriage at Cana where Jesus re-fused to act on His mother’s prompting (John 2:4). The Father was always supreme in Jesus’ affections. He expects us to have the same attitude too. After His resurrection He asked Peter whether he loved Him more than everything else on earth (John 21:15–17). Only those who love the Lord supremely are given responsibilities in His church. The love that Jesus demands from us is not the emotional, sentimental, hu-man affection that expresses itself in singing stirring songs of devotion to Him. No. If we love Him, we’ll obey Him (John 14: 21).

    2. Hating Our Own Life (Luke 14:26). The second condition of discipleship is that we must hate our own self-life. Jesus said, “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his own life, he cannot be My disciple” (Luke 14:26). He amplified that further by saying, “Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple” (Luke 14:27). This is one of the least understood of all of Jesus’ teachings. He said that a disciple would have to “deny himself and take up his cross daily” (Luke 9:23).

  • Bethel Methodist Church, Bangalore 19

More important than reading our Bible or praying daily, we have to deny ourselves and take up our cross daily. To deny our Self is the same as to hate our own life – the life that we have inherited from Adam. To take up the cross is to put that Self-life to death. We have to hate that life first, before we can slay it. Our self-life is the main enemy of the life of Christ. The Bible calls this ‘the flesh’. The flesh tempts us to seek our own gain, our own honour, our own pleasure, our own way etc. If we are honest, we’ll have to admit that many of our best actions are corrupted by evil motives that arise from our Self-life. Unless we hate this flesh, we will never be able to follow the Lord. This is why Jesus spoke so much about hating (or losing) our life. In fact, this phrase is repeated six times in the gospels (Matthew 10:39; 16:25; Mark 8:35; Luke 9:24; 14:26; John 12:25). This is the one saying of our Lord that is repeated most often in the gospels. Yet it is the least preached about and the least understood! To hate your own life is to give up seeking your own rights and privileges, to stop seeking your own reputation, to give up your ambitions and interests, and to stop seeking your own way etc. You can be a disciple of Jesus, only if you are willing to go this way.

    3. Giving Up All Our Possessions (Luke 14:33). The third condition of discipleship is that we must give up all our own pos-sessions. Jesus said, “No one of you can be My disciple who does not give up all his own possessions” (Luke 14:33). Our possessions are what we possess as our own. To give them all up means that we no longer consider anything as our own.

We see an illustration of this in the life of Abraham. Isaac was his own son – his possession. One day God asked him to offer Isaac as a sacrifice. And Abraham laid Isaac on the altar and was ready to slay him. But God intervened and told him that the sacrifice was not necessary, because he had proved his willingness to obey (Genesis 22). After that, Abraham recognised that even though he had Isaac in his house, he no longer possessed him as his own. Isaac now belonged to God.

This is what it means to give up all our possessions. All that we have must be laid on the altar and given up to God. God may allow us to use some of those things. But we can’t think of them as our own any more. Even if we are living in our own house, we must think of the house as God’s; and that He has allowed us to stay in it rent-free! This is true discipleship. Have we done that with all our possessions? Our possessions include our bank-account, property, job, qualifications, gifts and talents, wife and children and everything else that we value on this earth. We have to lay them all on the altar if we want to be true disciples. God wants us to love Him with all our heart. That’s the meaning of ‘the pure heart’ mentioned in Matthew 5:8. It’s not enough to have a clean conscience. A clean conscience only means that we have given up sin. A pure heart is one that has given up everything! And so we see that true discipleship involves a radical change of attitude towards: (1) our relatives and loved ones (2) our self-life and (3) our possessions. Unless we face these issues squarely right at the beginning of our Christian life, it will be impossible to lay a good foundation.
