BETHEL WEEKLY NEWS
CHILDREN ARE WELCOMED
AT BETHEL!
Parents will find bags of soft toys
for children at the entrance to
the worship areas. Thank you
for doing what you can to help
in creating a worship environ-
ment where all can participate
by keeping distracting noise and
movement to a minimum. If you
prefer, a nursery is available
Sunday mornings at Bethel
Highlands (9:30 am).
BAPTIZED Receiving the Sacrament of Holy Baptism on Sunday at the 9:30 am ser-vice is Samuel Christopher Pursell, son of Jessie & Mark Pursell, and at the 11 am service, Aiden Nathanial Schenck, son of Bethany & Aaron Schenck.
THANKS FOR A JOB WELL DONE! A great big THANK YOU to ALL the women and men who worked so hard to make last weekend’s Scandinavian Food Fest such a success! Somewhere between 1,500-2,000 guests came through our doors and a great time was had by all! What a great example of the kind of teamwork that goes on at Bethel! A job well done, everybody! Thanks so much!
IT’S NOT TOO LATE! . . . . PLEASE RETURN YOUR COMMITMENT CARDS THIS WEEK! If you weren’t with us last weekend, and/or haven’t returned your (blue) commitment card supporting our mission and ministry through our op-erating budget, please help us out by returning it this week. We want to put together a responsible budget for 2015 and won’t be able to do that without your response. You can mail it in, stop by the Down-town office, or drop it in the offering plate this Saturday or Sunday. Thank you, in advance, for your faithfulness and generosity in seeing that great things continue to happen in, and through, this wonderful congregation!
WHY ARE WE BETHEL LUTHERAN CHURCH?”
Join us on Sunday at one of the two lively conversations that will be led by Pastor Paul Martinson on Martin Lu-ther and the Reformation. Paul Martinson will present after the 8 am service at Bethel's Downtown Camp (9:15 in the fellowship hall) and after the 9:30 am service at Bethel's Highlands Campus (10:45 in the youth room).
JOIN US FOR OUR 3RD ANNUAL ALL SAINTS SERVICE! It’s important to remember those that have gone before us and passed on into the Kingdom of Heaven! All Saints Sunday is one of our key opportunities to do just that. Join us NEXT Sunday, November 2nd for a service of remembrance at 5 pm. This year we’ll be at the columbarium at our Highlands campus to remember: John Long, Delores Willi, Jeff Scovill, Kent McConaughey and others. Our Bethel Bell Ensemble will be on hand to share their music, and afterwards there will be a light supper shared in the children’s theater. We’ll be out-side, so please dress for the weather, but there will not be any walking with this service. Join us for this meaningful, creative and informal time!

Lord we pray for wisdom as it relates to making changes so that healing can occur in those ravaged by the effects of alcohol and drug addictions. It is diffi-cult to know what we can and cannot do to effect change. Help us to decipher what we can change and what is outside of our sphere of influence. Bestow your wisdom upon us. Then, most importantly, give us the courage to act on what we know to be true, know-ing that with this comes serenity.

OCTOBER 26, 2014
THANK YOU, PASTORS! October is Pastor Appreciation month. If you haven’t had a chance yet, please let our four pastors know how much they are appreciated! GRANT REQUEST DEADLINE IS NOVEMBER 4 Grant Requests are now being accepted for consideration by the Bethel Endowment Fund Advisory Committee. Please download the Grant Request Form from our Web site (Resources/Forms) or pick one up at either welcome center and submit to the Endowment Committee mailbox (located Downtown) by November 4th. Requests will be carefully considered and decisions will be made in early December. We look forward to receiving your requests and seeing great things happen with the use of the funds! BIBLE STUDY LEADERS MEET WELCA Bible study leaders will meet on Tuesday, November 4th at 6:30 pm Downtown. BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP READING A CLASSIC Please join readers at the Downtown campus on Wednesday, November 5 from 1-3 pm to discuss A Farewell To Arms by Ernest Hemingway. Everyone is invited; please come even if you have not read (or finished) the selection. The group celebrates a diversity of opinions, respecting all participants, and valuing their reactions and responses to the book selection. KNIT-WITS ARE BACK
Bethel’s knitting/crocheting group will resume their monthly meetings on the first Wednesday of the month at 10 am in the lounge at the Downtown campus, start-ing November 5th! The mission of the Knit-Wits is to make prayer shawls to show our love and concern for Bethel members who are experiencing health concerns, those going through a rough time, are in a nursing home, or for our friends who just need to know that someone cares.
Prayer shawls are easy for any beginner—it's just knit and purl. Kits with easy in-structions are available, or use a pattern and yarn of your own choice! We welcome new members and those who have been contributing, to join us for this needed minis-try and time getting to know each other better. Please contact Sheila at [email protected] if you’d like to know more about this ministry.
TREE AND BRUSH CLEARING AT HIGHLANDS— FIRE UP THOSE CHAIN SAWS! Fire up your chain saws and come to a tree and brush clearing event at the Highlands campus on Saturday, November 8th. We will be cutting down un-wanted brush, cedars, box elders, and if we have enough volunteers, some buck-thorn. Bring your chain saw, loppers, hand saw, and/or any other tools to do this work. We will start at about 8 am. If it rains or snows that day we will postpone until spring. For more information please contact Roger Pavlis at [email protected].

FILL A SHOEBOX, SHARE GOD’S LOVE Each year, Bethel friends of all ages participate in Operation Christmas Child. This program brings joy and hope to children in desperate situa-tions around the world. A shoebox filled with small toys, school supplies, other gifts, and a personal note can introduce a hurting child to God's love. Look for displays at both locations beginning Saturday, November 8th.
Please drop off your shoeboxes by Sunday, November 23rd at either Bethel campus. You may also choose to make a financial contribution online at www.samaritanspurse.org, with a credit or debit card. You can then print out the EZ give label that is sent with your e-mail receipt. The barcode on the label allows OCC to send you an e-mail to let you know which country your gift went to and information about OCC there.
A Bethel group will help pack up shoeboxes for shipment overseas at the OCC Packaging Center on the following dates: Saturday, November 29th (12 volunteers—almost full) Monday, December 1, 7-10 pm (12 volunteers) Friday, December 5, 3-7 pm (11 volunteers) If you’d like to help, please contact Alan Park at [email protected]. YAH TO ENJOY PENUMBRA THEATER’S “BLACK NATIVITY”
The Young at Hearts will have an opportunity to revisit the nativity story through a concert setting, featuring favorite holiday music. The Penumbra Theater presentation of “Black Nativity” will highlight soloists and the Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church Choir and is guaranteed to raise the roof! The concert is Saturday, December 13th. The bus will leave Bethel Downtown at 1 pm, returning by approximately 5 pm.
Please sign up at the Downtown campus welcome center and pay the $24 ticket cost no later than Monday, November 10th, at which time the tickets will be purchased.
This is a wonderful way to celebrate the holiday season. If you’ve seen the show in the past, you know how inspir-ing it is, and that a different version of the show is staged each year. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO HELP WITH HOLIDAY CONCERT Are you planning to purchase a ticket for the Holiday Concert with the Steeles on Saturday, November 29th? We’re looking for some volunteers to help with hospitality that evening (in return, you’ll get first dibs on choosing a seat, since you’ll be there early). If you’re willing to help us out for this big event, please contact Juli Hilding in the church office (715.386.8821). Thanks! FREE CAREGIVER INFORMATION SESSION—REGISTER TODAY! Register to attend the free Caregiver Information Session on Thursday, November 20, 2014 at the Community Commons, 421 Green Street, New Richmond (Senior Center area) from 5:30 to 6:45 pm. A free meal is pro-vided with advance registration. Contact Tara Murdzek at 715.381.4366 or 1.800.372.2333, x 4366 to regis-ter. Our speaker is Julie Holle, RN, Adoray Home Care and Hospice, to discuss the need to complete a power of attorney for health care, what happens if you don’t have one, and how to complete one. Powers of attorney for health care are not just for the elderly. This is a fantastic opportunity for information. Call today.
