It’s landing… The BFI’s Sci-Fi: Days of Fear and Wonder season of wonderfully weird, entertaining, scary and sometimes downright bizarre film screenings and events is coming to a venue near you from September to December 2014.

The season will include over 1000 screenings of classic film and television programmes at over 200 locations across the UK, from outdoor events at iconic British sites to screenings in multiplexes, local cinemas and community venues.

Join the fun (costume optional) with Film Hub NI’s members Black Box, Nerve Centre, Dungannon Film Club, Filmgoer, Cinemagic, Takeover Film Festival, Strand Arts Centre, Belfast Film Festival, Outburst Arts and QFT as they take you through unexplored territory to a world of aliens, time travel, parallel universes and much more.

Film Hub NI is part of a significant national initiative aimed at growing audiences for film across the UK. Running until March 2017, the BFI Film Audience Network (FAN) aims to put film at the centre of cultural life in Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK, encouraging more people to see a more diverse range of films in more locations nationally. Film Hub NI is managed and delivered by Queen’s Film Theatre.

The BFI have provided Film Hub NI with funding to support members in a wide range of screenings and events celebrating the Sci-Fifilm genre.

British cinema of the 60s and 70s produced a number of films that invoke the haunting dystopias and apocalyptic ennui of writers like JG Ballard and John Wyndham. London devastated by the repressed alien nature of it’s inhabitants, abandoned villages, and psychedelic nightmares all feature in a selection of key films that reflect a peculiarly British vision of the ‘End Times’.

Black Sunday will provide a comprehensive view over the darker side of Science Fiction film.

MAD MAX 2: THE ROAD WARRIOR(1981) Saturday 18th October

For one night only, T13, former shipbuilding warehouse turn skate park, will be transformed into a post-apocalyptic wasteland for Miller’s futuristic science fiction fantasy.Set in a strange post-industrial future where oil reserves are exhausted and violence rules the world, a cynical drifter armed with his super-charged V8 Interceptor (and faithful dog), agrees to help a small, fuel rich, community beleaguered by hordes of biker barbarians.

Bar facilities will be available at the venue, studded leather and bondage outfits optional.

Other sci-fi highlights from the Film Festival will include a handpicked programme celebrating the best in Eastern European and Sci-Fi film and television.

The workshop will be followed by the Sci-Fi animated film Moon Man which tells the story of a night when a shooting star appears, whizzing through outer space towards the moon.

Before the screening members of the Ulster Orchestra will take you on a string-tastic journey with music from Sci-Fi films ET, Star Wars and Star Trek.

This event will examine the ways the future has been imagined in science fiction film. The interactive session will be supported by clips and materials from a wide range of films and followed with a screening of Close Encounters of The Third Kind.

THE IRON GIANT (1999)with ‘Inside Animation’ workshop.Saturday 6 December12pm-4pm

Find out about the world of stop motion and hand drawn animation in an interactive workshop. Then sit back and follow the incredible adventures of young Hogarth Hughes in The Iron Giant.

BEAR-BARELLA starring Lady Bear & Peaches Christ Thursday 9 OctoberBlack Box from 8pmOutburst Arts presents the campest space opera of them all in a drag extravaganza celebrating Roger Vadim’s classic sci fi fantasy, Barbarella. Join San Francisco drag superstar and cult (movie) leader Peaches Christ for an out-of-this world event produced by Bren Callahan in collaboration with Outburst, New Media Scotland, Glasgow Film Theatre and Cornerhouse Manchester.

Peaches Christ isn’t merely screening the film, she’s inviting you to join her and her cast of drag aliens for a fully immersive and interactive experience when she presents her stage-show parody ‘Bear-barella’.

STRAND ARTS CENTRESCI-FI MONTH

Taking place in October and November, the Strand Arts Centre sci-fi month season of 6 films have been chosen to reflect the themes ‘Tomorrow’s World’ and ‘Physical Imagination’.
