September 20th of this past year, the devastating storm, Hurricane Maria, hit Puerto Rico and a number of the other islands in the Caribbean. Here at Ascension, we had a fundraiser so that we might offer good will, and some financial support. Through the generosity of so many parishioners, we raised $12,700. $10,200 was sent to the Parish of San Miguel Arcángel, in Naranjito, and $2,500. was sent to Las Hermanas Terciarias Capuchinas in Camuy, Puerto Rico. Sr. Clete, from the Parish of San Miguel Arcángel, sent a thank you note to us detailing how they have been spending the money. Below is the letter from Sr. Clete. Thank you again for your generous support. Dear Fr. Daniel, I send you a very special greeting during this Easter Season, that the Risen Lord may continue guiding you with the presence of the Holy Spirit along with your religious community and Parish. I am sending you the first Economic Report for the what we have accomplished thus far for our beloved Affected Brothers and Sisters of our town of Naranjito, of whom we have been serving and helping since Hurrican Maria along with the organization, “Fondita de Caridad Marie Poussepin”, which is directed by us, the “Sisters de la Caridad Dominicas de la Presentacion de la Santisima Virgen”, and several “Laicos” guided by our spirituality. We thank you again for your assistance in this great Cause of Service. December, 2017 - April, 2018 We received your donation on December 12, 2017. Since we had already identified the most vulnerable families from the barrios and sectors of our town, especially those who had lost everything with Hurricane Maria, we organized jointly with the Laicos Poussepin, and the first shopping consisted of purchasing food and plastic containers in which to put the food, with the idea that they could also use these plastic containers to place items that they were able to recuperate from their losses. We spent $2,535.60 on these groceries to help in this gesture of love and solidarity (with the assistance of your Parish) to 36 Affected Families from the 7 sectors that make up our Parish of San Miguel Arcángel. Families were visited between the 19th and 22 of December. January 19, 2018 Another one of the great necessities that we perceived to be urgent was to provide to some families, with clothing to wear, towels, personal hygiene items and disposable diapers. We used $796.14 for these items and were able to assist 6 families within the sectors of Guadiana, Anones, Cedro Abajo y Achiote.

January 30, 2018 In the towns of Achiote and Loma García, we assisted 2 families with the purchase of 3 sets of twin mattresses, along with mattress protectors, bed frames and bedsheets…for a cost of $420.00. One of these families has two young children with special needs (they received the mattresses). Their house is uninhabitable and is currently under reconstruction. February 3, 2018 The family of Wildalis Rodriguez (4 members) of the sector of Achiote, their house was impacted by the flooding and one of their windows was destroyed in their children’s bedroom leaving their beds completely destroyed. For this family we ordered two sets of full-sized mattress along with sheets and bed frames for a cost of $490.00. March 8, 2018 For a young person from a family in the Cuco sector, shirts, pants, towels and personal hygiene items were given. The house he shared with his brother and mother was made of wood and was completely destroyed by Hurricane Maria, leaving them with nothing. He was given $117.05. March 20, 2018 A father who lives with his two children in the Los Cosme sector…had his home become uninhabitable when the windows and doors were destroyed. They were visited and accompanied by our community and family of Poussepin. For their home we bought them four new double windows and in the name of Ascension Parish, we gave them $321.05. April 2, 2018 Two families with elderly members lost the roof and windows of their home. They were visited by two Laicos members from our parish of San Miguel Arcángel. This case was transferred to us so that we could provide guidance and assistance to these families. The door to their dining rooms as well as some windows were severely damaged. For these families, we purchased doors, windows, locks, cement, and adhesive for construction. We gave them $388.40. Of the $10,200 that we received from your Parish, we have spent $5068.24. We continue to be ever grateful for your generosity and kindness. We will continue giving to those whom we visit and find dire needs that we continue to find. New Credit Card Donations

Ascension now has a new exciting way to make donations without cash. Parishioners can now utilize the DipJar, a system that can accept your credit card donations. The Church will continue to accept cash during masses. The DipJar will be available at the back of the church and allow parishioners to donate in multiples of $10.

Spring Food & Climate Film Seriess

Beginning Tuesday, May 1 @ 6:45pm. The selected films focus on how agriculture, the meat and fishing industries as well as food consumption impact both the environment and our health. Local experts will participate in Q&A and discussion after each film. The film series is sponsored by Blessed Sacrament, Guardian Angel-St.Columba, and Holy Name of Jesus-St. Gregory the Great Parish-es and the Metro NY Catholic Climate Movement. All films will be screened at St. Mary of the Angels Chapel (lower chapel @ Holy Name of Jesus Church, 207 West 96th St).

Notas del Pastor El 20 de Septiembre fue el dia cuando Hurracan Maria llegó a Puerto Rico y otras islas de Caribe. Aqui, hemos tenido un evento para apoyar a ellos. Por la generosidad de nuestra feligresía, hemos colectado $12,700. Hemos enviado $10,200. A la Parroquia de San Mi-guel Arcángel en Naranjito, y otro $2,500 a Las Hermanas Terciarias Capuchinas in Camuy, Puerto Rico. Aquí le envío este primer informe Económico de las gestiones realizada en pro de nuestros queridos Hermanos Damnificados de nues-tro Pueblo de Naranjito, a quien hemos estado sirviendo y acompañando desde el Huracán María con la organización “Fondita de Cari-dad Marie Poussepin” dirigida por nosotras las Hermanas de la Caridad Dominicas de la Presentación de la Santísima Virgen, y al-gunos Laicos guiados desde nuestra Espiritualidad. Agradecemos de antemano su aportación a esta Causa de Servicio de Caridad. Recibimos su donación en Diciembre 12/2017. Como ya teníamos Identificadas las familias más vulnerables de las Barriadas y Sectores de nuestro Pueblo, especialmente aquellos que habían perdido todo con el Huracán María, organizamos junto con los Laicos Poussepin, las primeras compras de alimentos y cajas plásticas para poner las compras, con la finalidad de que estas cajas les sirvieran también para resguardar aquellas pocas cosas que habían logrado recuperar. Invertimos $2,535.60 en la compras de diferentes productos Alimenticios para socorrer con este gesto de Amor y solidaridad (con la aportación económica de su Parroquia) a 36 Familias Damnificadas de los 7 sectores que conforman nuestra Parroquia San Miguel Arcángel. Se visitaron las familias entre el 19 al 22 de Diciembre. (Le anexo las fotos por fechas) Enero 19/ 2018. Otra de las grandes necesidades que percibimos y que era urgente proveer a algunas familias, era ropas para vestir, toallas entre otros artículos de limpieza personal, Pañales desechables para bebe entre otros. Invertimos $796.14 Se Impactó a 6 familias de los sectores de Guadiana, Anones, Cedro Abajo y Achiote. (Ver Fotos) Enero 30/ 2018 En los Barrios de Achiote y Lomas García, se socorrió a dos Familias con 3 Set de Matress Twin, Forros Protectores, un Frame de Matress de Cama, dos juegos de sábanas de una plaza, con el costo de $420.00. La primera de estas familias, tiene entre sus miembros dos jovencitos de educación especial. (para ellos los dos set de matress) Su casa quedó inhabilitada, en este momento, están en recon-strucción. Febrero 3/2018 Familia de Wildalis Rodríguez, (4 miembros) Sector de Achiote, su casa fue impactada por el torrente de agua con barro, explotó una de las ventanas del cuarto de sus dos hijos. Sus camas quedaron inservibles. Para esta Familia mandamos a hacer dos set de Matress Full, Sabanas y un Frame de cama; se invirtió $490.00 Marzo 8/2018 Se le entregó a un joven de una familia del sector el Cuco, camisas, pantalones, toallas y útiles de aseo personal; vive asilado en casa de su madre, su residencia la cual compartía con su hermano era totalmente de madera, fue destruida completamente por el Huracán María, quedando sin nada. Se invirtió $117.05 Marzo 20/2018 Un Padre de familia del Sector Los Cosme, vive con dos hijos, su vivienda quedó inhabitable, explotaron las ventanas y puertas de la casa, perdieron todo. Fueron visitados y acompañados por nuestra comunidad y la familia Poussepin. Para la casa de ellos compramos cuatro ventanas dobles, y en nombre de su Parroquia “la Asunción” le dimos la donación, se invirtió $321.05 Abril 2/2018 Dos Familias con personas envejecientes, perdieron también el techo, ventanas en sus casas. Fueron visitadas por dos laicos de nuestra parroquia san Miguel Arcángel; posteriormente se nos transfirió el caso para que nosotras le diéramos seguimiento y pudiéramos ayudar. Se les explotó también la puerta de la sala comedor y unas ventanas. Para estas Familias se compró Puertas, ventanas, cerradu-ras, mescla lista, bloques, Adhesivo para construcción. Se invirtió $388.40 De los diez mil doscientos que recibimos de su Parroquia, hemos gastado $5,068.24. Nuevamente seguimos agradecidas a su gener-osidad y compartir. El restante, continuaremos invirtiéndolo en la medida que sigamos visitando y encontrando necesidades angusti-antes como las que hasta ahora hemos encontrado. Dios y María Santísima los bendiga.
