December greetings,

As we come to the close of another year and settle into our year-end rituals I’d like to take a moment to reflect on 2013. It has been another great year thanks to our customers, employees and industry colleagues.

First and foremost, the CAMP family is grateful for our loyal customers and friends. Thank you for your business and the confidence you have placed in CAMP. It has been a pleasure supporting you this year.

CAMP is also grateful for the partnerships we have established and fostered throughout the year — Beechcraft, Bombardier, Cessna, Dassault Falcon, Daher-Socata, Embraer, HondaJet, Honeywell, Piaggio, Pilatus, Pratt & Whitney Canada and Boeing BBJ. These industry relationships are invaluable as they help all involved to provide superior support and service to owners and operators worldwide. We have worked diligently this year with each OEM in an effort to bolster relationships that will span far into the future. Thank you to all our colleagues.

CAMP was pleased to partner with HondaJet this year as HondaJet’s endorsed Maintenance Tracking provider. The announcement was made in May at this year’s EBACE. CAMP also had the pleasure of being selected as the exclusive Engine Health Monitoring provider for Honeywell TFE and HTF engines, announced at NBAA 2013.

Over the year CAMP has continued in its pursuit to provide the business aviation community with the best products and support available on the market. Some of this year’s accomplishments include:

• CAMP Website – On December 17th, CAMP launched its new, user-friendly website. If you haven’t done so already, please take a minute to peruse at your leisure: www.campsystems.com.

• iHangar* Developments –

Customer Managed Logbook Templates: This feature allows an operator to set a preferred logbook format

Maintenance Logbook Workflow: Improvement to the CAMP Maintenance Logbook have made the log simpler and more intuitive

Integration of MTX & EHM – The 3.0 Interface integrating Maintenace (MTX) and Engine Health Monitoring (EHM) marks a significant step in providing a true single source for all aircraft related maintenance information.

• Fleet Performance Portal – This is a comprehensive tool allowing CAMP fleet operators the opportunity to analyze operational data and generate customized fleet reports for both internal and regulatory requirements

• European Steering Committee – CAMP launched a European Steering Committee at this year’s EBACE meeting to specifically address the European customer community’s unique needs • Email Alert Feature – CAMP has expanded the email alerting capability in CAMP MTX by adding additional alerts, and improving existing alerts. This useful enhancement is featured in this month’s ‘Hot Tip.’

• Owner Operated Functionality – CAMP offers Owner Operators a customized support service designed to fit the way the aircraft are operated• Socata Warranty Module – CAMP has designed a warranty claim module within the CAMP system to allow Service Centers to submit warranty claims, and allow Socata to manage the warranty claim process

This list just begins to touch the surface of the array of maintenance and support solutions CAMP has endeavored to providein 2013. There are more great enhancements in the hopper and we look forward to exceeding your expectations in 2014. But for now, as I sign off for 2013, I’d like to wish you each a Safe and very Happy Holiday Season.

Best regards,

Rich Anzalone VP Customer Support and Sales CAMP Systems International [email protected]

t seems like the news is full of lies, deceit and chicanery - and that’s the sports section. Whether it is self-inflicted or based on a combination of bad luck, bad timing and bad planning, when a company’s fortunes turn red, the flight department is an easy target for reductions. When times are good, we tend to overlook the cyclical nature of business and think things will keep on running smoothly indefinitely.

There can be many reasons why the flight department is targeted for cutbacks. It could be that business is bad and every department is taking a cut. It could be that the new CEO is a fearful flier or thinks the plane is a money pit. On the other hand, business can skyrocket and you might find yourself short handed, operating too small or too few aircraft and scrambling to stay responsive to the company’s aircraft needs. If you don’t have a plan, you are setting yourself up for failure.

If you have a plan for both good times and bad, and pay attention to the financial “NOTAMS” of your company, you may be able to adjust to the inevitable changes and sacrifices when required.

At a minimum, your Aviation Strategic Plan should cover three scenarios:

1. Status Quo - no change in the mission. Life is good and you need only plan on when and how to replace aircraft and what criteria you need to use. This is the best time to work on updating your plan for contingencies, as it will remind you not to be complacent.

2. Growth - new markets, expanding markets. Things are changing and the flight department is called to do more, fly more or take on a new mission. This can be an exciting time, but also a stressful time. Where do I hire new pilots/mechanics/cabin attendants? How many hours can each aircraft fly before we need to look at adding one more? Where does charter or fractional ownership fit in? Does our current aircraft really do this new job in the most cost effective and mission efficient manner? If you wait until you can’t meet demand to look at what to do, you’re too late.

3. Decline - budget cuts, maybe even layoffs. What is your most important mission? Least important? What if utilization drops off, what happens to your costs? If this occurs, you will face more stress than you think. But, if you know where the flight department’s priorities are, you can be better prepared if cuts are inevitable. Know your costs, your missions, and your people. It won’t prevent problems like layoffs, but it will allow you some sense of control over as you adjust to the changes.

One question that can come up is “Are we operating the best aircraft for the job?” A strategic plan addresses this question with the reasoning and justification as to why you fly the aircraft you do. It also ties into the company’s mission statement.

We’ve worked on strategic plans like this for several companies. If you’ve never done one, it can seem like a daunting task. However, you just take it a piece at a time, get your data and if possible, get senior management to sign off on it. The pay off is in being able to better anticipate and adjust to changes without “shooting from the hip.” Like the Scouts always say, be prepared.

When Cessna introduced the Citation X to the market in 1996, they

not only wanted to improve their ex-isting products, they wanted to break records. The Citation X set numerous speed records, (Mach 0.92) to claim the title of the fastest operational business jet in the world. It was also the first aircraft from Cessna that used fully integrated avionics and Rolls-Royce engines. The Citation X may have looked similar to its pre-decessors, but it was a very different aircraft. It operated on a totally new

wing design, was outfitted with new engines and featured a glass cockpit.

Cessna used much longer wings compared to any of its other products on the Citation X. According to Cessna, the wing sweepback at quarter chord is 37 degrees which is only second to the Boeing 747. The swept wing, along with a supercritical airfoil, allows the plane to fly at a super high speed. The Rolls Royce Allison AE 300 7A engines, originally designed for commercial airlines enable the

plane to cover one mile every six seconds. Besides the speed of the aircraft, the glass cockpit also lent to its efficiency. The X panel has five 7x8 inch screens that provide pilots with a panorama of timely, practical and functional information. The Citation X lost its speed crown in 2012, when the Gulfstream 650 was introduced as the fastest business aircraft, however, Cessna answered that with the announcement of the “new Citation X” which is expected to reclaim its spot as the fastest civilian airplane.

AMSTATMarket Analysiswith Judy Nerwinski, Director of Research

Let’s take a look at the Citation X and how it has sustained itself in this ever changing marketplace. AMSTAT’s statistics shows that out of the 310 active units, 56 are operated outside North America. Nine reside in Canada while 243 are operated in the United States.

Resale Retail Transaction activity for the Citation X is not following the general market trends we have been seeing in other markets. Although, there was a leveling out after the economic downturn of 2008/2009, the number of retail sales for the Citation X has actually dropped this year. In the third quarter of 2013 1.9% of the worldwide fleet was sold as compared to 2.24% last year at the very same time. Retail sales for the Citation X were at their highest since 2007 during this same time. The decrease in sales supports the increase in average days on the market. In November of 2013, the average days on the market was 321. This number represents a significant change from last year when the average days on the market in November was 235 for the very same aircraft. Today 7.74% of the active fleet is currently for sale.

Citation X owners are still enjoying their “super-fast” efficient aircraft despite all the new technological advances manufacturers make each year. As the market continues to rebuild, the need for a reliable, efficient, fast aircraft will not go unnoticed.

Lloyd C. Stearman

Stearman, much like his contemporary, Clyde Cessna,

was another Kansas boy with exceptional mechanical skills. He was a serious student of architecture before his WWI military service, when he learned to fly at Rockwell Field in San Diego. From that point on aviation became the central focus of Stearman’s life. In 1920 he was hired as a mechanic at the aircraft factory owned by Emil M. Laird, designer of the three-place Swallow. Also working with Laird at that time was Walter Beech.

Stearman and Beech foresaw the future of aircraft built with a welded tubular steel fuselage, as opposed to wood, and proposed their concept to Laird. Laird was unwilling to change what already had proven successful for him, and soon Stearman and Beech resigned to start their own company. During 1925 they partnered with Cessna and formed the Travel Air Company in Wichita to design and build a successful biplane. Not long after the departure of Stearman and Beech, Laird also designed an open-cockpit biplane powered by an OX-5 engine enclosed in an all-metal cowling. Laird went on to build several different customized racing aircraft. His planes won races by famous aviators of the 1920s and 1930s such as Jimmy Doolittle and Roscoe Turner. Laird continued working in aviation, often as a mechanic for large commercial airlines, and on military

aircraft during WWII. He retired from aviation entirely in 1945.

Stearman flew his Travel Air in the 1926 Ford Reliability Tour during which he was involved in a spectator fatality. Distraught, Stearman nearly quit aviation altogether. But within a year, he left Cessna and Beech and moved to California as a stunt pilot in films. His home state of Kansas beckoned and he returned to open the Stearman Aircraft Company. In 1929, Stearman’s business was absorbed into the giant conglomerate of United Aircraft and Transportation Company, owned by William Boeing. After WWII the Stearman biplane found work as a crop-duster and was the frequent plane of choice for air show wing-walkers.

Leaving his private business ventures behind him, Stearman designed military aircraft for several companies. During the Cold War he headed up new development at Lockheed Aircraft Company in Burbank, California. In 1968, as the world entered the Space Age, Stearman once again opened his own aircraft business in Los Angeles. He was described as a quiet academic with a love for classical music but his passion for aircraft design remained paramount until his death at age 77.

Hundreds of vintage Stearmans have been restored to air-worthiness and no doubt many have landed at the Lloyd Stearman Field Airport in Benton, Kansas.

Walter Herschel Beech

Born and raised on a farm in Tennessee, Beech learned how to

repair equipment and in his early twenties was ultimately hired as a technical representative for a truck company. Based upon his natural ability to interface with customers Beech was assigned to work in Europe for two years. In 1917 he returned home and joined the Army Air Corps. He is thought to have gone through training in Waco, Texas, later serving three years as a pilot, instructor and engineer. There are conflicting accounts of when and where Beech first designed and/or flew an aircraft, but it is likely that he experimented with building his own glider as a teen. After WWI, he is known to have flown Curtiss “Jennys” and Lincoln Standard biplanes, barnstorming in Kansas.

In 1921 Beech found his first job as a test pilot at the Laird factory, then producing the popular Swallow. Between 1921 and 1926, one of the main ways to sell aircraft was to enter (and win) air races. Beech represented Laird and later the Travel Air Company, winning twenty races. In addition to his flying skills, Beech was a remarkable salesman.

Although Beech was General Manager of Laird’s company, he had ideas of his own for the future of aircraft design. He soon joined Stearman and Cessna to form the Travel Air Company, which quickly produced as series of successful aircraft. And almost as quickly,

the three founders went their separate ways. When Travel Air merged with the Curtis-Wright Airplane Company Beech moved to the east coast. But, like Stearman, he was drawn back to Wichita in 1932. Beech Aircraft Company built the popular Staggerwing and in 1937, introduced the Model 18, named because it was the eighteenth plane exclusively designed by Beech. The Model 18 was easily adaptable to land on any terrain with wheels, skis or floats. “It was a design that would push Beechcraft airplanes well ahead of the competition,” writes biographer, Bruce Bissonette. Beech was described as a “rambunctious” administrator, who never stopped flying. In 1940 he partnered with H.C. Rankin to fly a Beechcraft 18 to win the New York to Miami Air Race. Back in the

office, his wife, Olive Ann, was capably filling in during his absence.

During WWII the Army and Navy purchased nearly 8,000 Model 17s and Model 18s as personnel transports, bombers and pilot training planes. The Beech factory bulged with 14,000 employees by the end of the war. Between 1947 and 1949, Beech Aircraft kept the doors open by manufacturing parts and equipment such as corn harvesters. In 1948 Beech Aircraft successfully introduced the Twin Bonanza as an executive commuter, which was later adapted for military use in Korea.

In 1950, Walter Beech died suddenly, leaving Olive Ann as President of Beech Aircraft. Overnight the mother of two young children

have to convert your engines to the en-gine program. Call your analyst for assis-tance.

I know I can generate a logbook en-try during an update. Can I generate a logbook insert for tasks that have been accomplished in the past?

Yes, you must search for the tasks you want to include in the entry. On the “task search” screen enter the date (or a date range) in the “C/W Date” field param-eter. When you get the search results click on the “click to print logbook insert report” icon (the notepad with a “L” on it). Then select the items you want, chose a signoff statement, enter times, and print. This report can also be produced as a MSWord document, which would allow you to format it any special way you need.

How can I combine my Status Report with the Requirement report?

It’s simple. From the Report Queue select Merge PDF. Next, give the report a name in the View Report Description field, then select the reports you want and the or-der you want them merged. Click Sub-mit, then behold your report.

Are you pursuing a career in aviation; enhancing your skill set for profession-al growth and development or shifting jobs within the field and could benefit from a grant or scholarship?

If so, visit the FAA's 'Scholarships & Grants' page (www.faa.gov/education/stu-dent_resources/scholarships_grants) to

see what resources might be availalble to you. The page categorizes the schol-arships and grants into four headings:

• Aviation Scholarships

• Minority Scholarships

• Miscellaneous Scholarships

• Grants

Select a heading to see a list of available scholarships or grants. From there you can select a specific program and con-tinue to that organization's site to review the details of the scholarship or grant.

How can I give a new employee access to our aircraft records?

The Administrator has the ability to create a logon for who ever they want. Use the Administration link to add a new user. If you need further assistance, feel free to call Application Support.

Can I stop getting paper reports?

Yes, we can set up your aircraft profile so that your monthly reports are generated electronically, please note that the re-ports and work cards would be linked to your aircraft profile for you to access. If this is an option that interests you please contact your analyst.

How can I track items with a require-ment other than the ones from the Man-ufacturer - i.e. life vest?

Contact your CAMP Analyst and explain what you need tracked. It can be added right to the system or they can walk you through how to add a customer code.

Why don’t I see my engine hours on the profile page under “Last Actuals”?

Your engines are not on the engine pro-gram (tracking by true engine times), the engine requirements are being tracked by airframe hours. Eventually you will

“The first PC-24 prototype is currently under construction at Pilatus headquarters in Stans, Switzerland, and is scheduled to make its first flight by the end of 2014. A total of three aircraft will be used in the flight test program. Certifi-cation and first customer deliveries will occur in 2017. Pilatus plans to begin taking orders for the PC-24, and announce key launch customers, at the EBACE convention in Geneva, Switzerland

in May, 2014” says Oscar J. Schwenk, Chairman of Pilatus Aircraft Ltd.

Pilatus is exhibiting the PC-24 mockup and a real PC-12 NG at their NBAA exhibit inside the Las Vegas Convention Center, display #C12216. Following NBAA, the PC-24 mockup will be on display at Pilatus Business Aircraft Ltd’s facility in Broomfield, Colorado for the month of November.

PC-12 Customer Service Rated #1 for 12 consecutive yearsThe readers of Professional Pilot magazine ranked Pilatus as the best customer service provider for business turboprop aircraft for 12 years in a row.In the 2013 Corporate Aircraft Product Support Survey of business aircraft operators, conducted annually by Professional Pilot magazine, Pilatus earned the top ranking in the turboprop division for the 12th year in a row. Pilatus showed the most improvement in overall score for the 2013 survey, receiving higher marks in every category.

In addition, Aviation International News maga-zine reported a significant jump in the overall score for Pilatus, which retained its top honors in the annual Product Support Survey, Newer Tur-boprops category.

The annual surveys ask participants to rate their experience based on company response time, spares availability, cost of parts, speed of AOG service, technical manuals, technical representa-tives and service satisfaction.

“Striving for improvement is a constant. Our job is to provide reasonable and reliable service to our customers; the Professional Pilot survey is a per-fect way for us to take our customers input and work towards improving our support”, said Piotr “Pete” Wolak, Vice President of Customer Service for Pilatus Business Aircraft Ltd.

Wolak also mentioned the partnership between Pilatus and their worldwide network of service

centers, “the relationship we have with our service centers is unique and crucial to the success of our company. We approach our service centers as an extension of Pilatus which creates a reliable part-nership for our customers”.

Pilatus continues to prove that Swiss-craftsman-ship alongside relentless customer support sets the PC-12 in a class of its own.

Pilatus delivers the 1,200th PC-12In a ceremony in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, the Swiss aircraft man-ufacturer delivered the 1,200th unit of its single engine turboprop PC-12 to fractional aircraft ownership program PlaneSense™. President and CEO of PlaneSense, Inc., George Antoniadis, explains, “PlaneSense, Inc. has built its successful business model on the PC-12. For eighteen years, this versatile, efficient and reliable aircraft has served us extremely well. The Plane-Sense™ program employs the largest civilian fleet of PC-12 aircraft in the world, which speaks vol-

umes about our satisfaction with the performance of the aircraft and our long lasting relationship with Pilatus.”

Thomas Bosshard, President and CEO of Pilatus Business Aircraft Ltd added, “Pilatus and Plane-Sense™ have enjoyed an outstanding partnership for nearly 20 years. We have grown together, learned from each other, and mutually prospered because of this relationship. We wish to thank both PlaneSense and its customers for their con-fidence in the PC-12 and for their eighteen years of safe operation. Pilatus is honored to have Pla-neSense, Inc. take delivery of the 1,200th PC-12, and we look forward to many more years of suc-cess in the future.”

The versatile PC-12 NG performs many roles worldwide, including executive transport, com-muter, medevac, police and border surveillance, cargo transport, military liaison, and regional airliner. The PC-12 fleet has amassed over 4 mil-lion flight hours of operating experience, includ-ing thousands of hours in some of the world’s harshest environments. For 11 consecutive years, PC-12 operators have ranked Pilatus customer support as the best in the industry in an annual survey conducted by Professional Pilot magazine.

Pilatus Opens Joint Venture Company in ChinaPilatus Aircraft Industry (China) Co., Ltd opened for business on August 5th, 2013 in the Chinese metropolis of Chongqing. The new joint venture company will allow Pilatus Aircraft Ltd to establish itself in the Chinese market. An initial contract to supply a total of 50 PC-12s/PC-6s has also been signed. The newly created company and associated Pilatus activities in China will have a positive im-pact on production operations in Switzerland.

The gradual opening up of Chinese air space has brought new importance to civil aviation. The Chinese aviation authority (CAAC) expects to see average growth of over ten percent in the Chinese aviation industry in the next few years.

Pilatus opted to set up a joint venture company with a Chinese Partner for the purpose of gaining a firm foothold in this new market. Indeed, Pila-tus would not be able to sell its aircraft in China without the new company of which Pilatus has a majority shareholding.

Pilatus Aircraft Industry (China) Co., Ltd will provide a production platform for aircraft compo-nents - for the PC-6 and PC-12 only, both civilian aircraft. The company will not be involved in the production of components for military training aircraft (PC-21, PC-9 M and PC-7 MkII).

Oscar J. Schwenk, Chairman of the Board of Di-rectors of Pilatus Aircraft Ltd, comments:

"The PC-12 and Pilatus Porter PC-6 are optimum aircraft for this booming market, and we are confi-dent our products have great potential. China has many small airfields with short runways - our air-craft are ideal for operating in and out of them."

Markus Bucher, CEO of Pilatus Aircraft Ltd, adds:

"We believe that a partnership with a local sales partner is the key to success. It also ties in with our strategy of ensuring optimum customer service through the closest possible geographic proximity. Assisted by our joint venture partner, TXJY – Bei-jing Tian Xing Jian Yu Science Co., Ltd., we will achieve our goal of establishing the Pilatus brand in China.“

The newly created company and associated Pilatus activities in China will not impact negatively on production operations in Switzerland. On the con-trary, production in Switzerland will be reinforced by the anticipated sale of aircraft to China.

Over 275 new jobs have been created at the head office in Stans in the past two years, and further recruitment is planned in the future.
