2010 BIKE LONG BEACHYEAR IN REVIEW
2Once avoided by parents due to speedy traffic crossing at Park and Ximeno,
Vista Street now serves as a safe route to school serving Horace Mann and
Lowell Elementary Schools, as well as Rogers Middle School.
Vista Street Bike BoulevardThe 1st bike boulevard in Southern California was
opened to much fanfare by the residents on Vista
at a block party hosted by the Belmont Heights
and Bluff Heights Neighborhood Associations on
Sunday, December 12th.
2010 has been a stellar year for
biking in Long Beach, withmany significant advancesoccurring on all fronts. Newbike routes, innovative bike
facilities, bike safety education,bike corrals, and more and
were just getting started.
The purpose of all of theseimprovements is to make LongBeach a healthier, moreactive, and more livablecommunity for all of itsresidents. We are a perfectcommunity to take advantage
of cycling and mobility giventhe great bike paths along the
Los Angeles and San GabrielRivers as well as our own BeachBike Path.

Green Sharrow Study Results
Accolades & Distinctions
! Ranked as the 23rd best bike city inAmerica by Bicycling Magazine
the highest ranked city in SouthernCalifornia
! Received a grand prize national
innovation award from the Institutefor Transportation Engineers for the
green sharrow installation inBelmontShore
! Featured in the independent
film Riding Bikes with Dutch,in which film maker MichaelBauch rediscovers
bicycle bliss in hishome town
2010 BIKE LONG BEACHYEAR IN REVIEW
Before and after studies were completed for this one-year experimental project
approved by the Federal Highway Administration and the California Traffic
Control Devices Committee that was installed in June, 2009. The results showed
almost a doubling of people on bicycles on 2nd Street, and a 485% increase of
people on bikes correctly using the green sharrow lane outside of the door zone.

Tour of Long Beach, which raised over$65,000 for Miller Childrens Hospital
! 2,666 cyclistsparticipated in the LongBeach Bike Marathon

! More than 1,000 people participated in the American DiabetesAssociations Ship to Shore Tour de Cure bike ride across the GeraldDesmond and Vincent Thomas Bridges
! The Tuesday night circuit series at El Dorado Regional Park organized byCalifornia Bicycle Racing continues to draw over 200 participants per week
during the Spring and Summer
! 3,000 people attended the 4th Street in Motion event, which included the
Bike Film Festival
! The Cyclone Coasters, a vintage bicycle club, hosted Sunday rides
! Groups such as Velo Allegro, Lightning Velo, and the LaHabra Cycling Clubcontinue to have daily rides throughout the community and welcome newmembers

Coming in 2011Theres a lot to look forward to next year because a lot is underway. First andmost exciting is the separated bikeways that are under construction downtownon Broadway and 3rd. They will be opening in the first quarter and will go a longway toward serving the growing neighborhood of new families that calldowntown home. The update of the bike master plan is also getting started with
community meetings throughout the city from January through March. And nextup is the brand new downtown Bikestation and a new bike share program to
serve downtown and CSULB through a Metro grant. Theres much more on theway to include it all here - plus we have to save something for the 2011 Year in
Review!
