Overview... Sanitary sewerage systems

serve only a low percentage of the population.

In non sewer areas, more than 80% of the night soil is treated in septic tanks.

Therefore, using the biological leachate treatment plants to treat both MSW leachate and domestic waste water has been hashed out in this study.

Analysis of parameters... pH, COD, HRT, Temperature,

co-substrate was determined for the samples.

pH meter, ELICO makes model LI 120, were used to determine the pH of the samples.

COD is a measure of the oxygen equivalent of organic matter .

HRT is defined as, the volume of the reactor to the volumetric flowrate.

Study area...

Solid wastes were collected freshly from omagulam dumping site by vehicles and dumped.

Leachates were collected from the land fill in which the solid wastes collected and dumped.

The seed sludge for reactors were collected from high rate anaerobic digester, which was treating distillery effluent located at M/s Sakthi Sugars Ltd. Appakoodal, Bhavani, Erode Dt. and M/s Sriram Narayana Sago Factory, namagripet, Rasipuram Tk, Namakkal Dt.

Methodology... VSS was found out by using a known volume of the sludge was

filtered through what-man filter paper no. 44. Volatile fatty Acid has been found by taking a sample of 100ml and

tirated against 0.1N NaOH, after adjusting the pH on 6.5. For TSS a known volume of the effluent was filtered through a

Whatman filter paper no. 44 and carried in a pre weighed silica crucible and evaporated to dryness by a heating device and then the crucible was again weighted.

Bio gas production was measured by water displacement method. The production of “5-day BOD test” as given in AOHA, 1992 was

adopted for estimating BOD5 for characterizing the effluent.

Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket reactor (UASBR).

UASBR reactor was used in this work was drawn up of vertical polyacrylic rectangular shape tanks with internal working volume of 15L.

The elevation of the reactor is 3m in this working height was 2.4m with the width and breadth of 0.18m and 0.061m respectively.

The inlet of the reactor was at the bottom and the outlet was at the top.

This reactor contains four sampling ports for every 60cm

Conclusion...

The analysis report of domestic wastewater and MSW leachate revealed that both the characteristics were almost very similar.

In time, efficiency the start up period of the reactor was minimized up to 45days by seeding the reactor with starch based sludge.

The experimental results also demonstrate that the COD removal by variable HRT is almost up to 90%, whereas other parameters also decreased drastically.
