Liberal Arts Education

Last month, it was announced that Singapore could have its first liberal arts college as soon as 201 3, if a newly launched study between the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Yale Uni- versity concludes that teaming up on the venture is feasible. If finalised, it would be the first under- graduate college in Asia with Yale as a full partner, offering the broad-based, multidisciplinary education that the prestigious American university is famous for.

Since the news broke however, students and faculty at Yale have expressed their reservations over the tie-up, with many questioning the degree of academic freedom in Singapore. To seek the view of its faculty members, Yale University sent email invitations to its 2,000 faculty members to attend a closed-door meeting to discuss the Yale-National University of Singapore (NUS) collaboration, but only about 25 turned up, according to a front-page article in the Yale Daily News, the universi- ty's student newspaper. The poor turnout at the first meeting held for Yale University faculty to weigh in on a proposed liberal arts college in Singapore has put a question mark on the level of staff interest.

Lianhe Zaobao spoke to Yale-educated graduates now working in Singapore, as well as Singapore students currently studying in the United States to weigh in on the feasibility of a liberal arts educa- tion in Singapore.

Assistant Professor of Sociology at SMU, Forrest Zhang, a graduate of Yale, said: "Pursuing freedom of expression and academic freedom is a long-standing tradition in the West. Liberal arts education is about training critical thinking, to which the freedom of expression and academic freedom is indispensable. For the training of critical thinking to be successful, all questions must be open to scrutiny and debate, in the hope that truth will eventually come out of such debate and deliberation. This is also an underlying premise of democracy: through deliberation, the public will reach the most reasonable decision."
