SOLEMNITY OF PENTECOSTES
SOLEMNIDAD DE PENTECOSTÉS
JUNE 4, 2017 / 4 de JUNIO de 2017
A letter from the Pastor My dear People at Blessed Seelos Parish: The Solemnity of Pentecost is the birthday of the Church. Why is that so? Would you know without me telling you? Be honest! Well, here is the answer: The Church is not an institution. It is the Body of Christ. It is a living body and not a dead body. It requires nourishment and life. This source of life in the Church is called the Holy Spirit. This is the source of unity between the Father and the Son, and the person of the Trinity that brings about all the spiritual fruits that we see around us in the work of the Church. Without the Holy Spirit, there would be no Sacraments, no forgiveness of sins, no celebration of the Mass, no ordinations to the diaconate, priesthood or episcopacy. There would be no Real Presence in the Eucharist, no sacramental marriage, no Confirmation, no inspira-tion about new movements in the Church, no holiness of life. The Church could not exist without the presence of the Lord as mani-fested in the sacraments of the Church. Without the sacraments, there is no life, there is no Church. Pentecost and the outpouring of the Spirit makes this presence a reality for the whole Church, and therefore becomes the first moment, the birthday, the first manifes-tation of the awesome power of God that is not just historical but eternal. Happy Birthday, Church!

This Solemnity makes us remember and relive the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles and the other disciples gathered in prayer with the Virgin Mary in the Upper Room. Jesus, risen and ascended into Heaven, sent his Spirit to the Church so that every Christian might participate in his own divine life and become his valid witness in the world. The Holy Spirit, breaking into history, defeats aridity, opens hearts to hope, stimulates and fosters in us an interior maturity in our relationship with God and with our neighbor.
