Keeneland Concours d’Elegance By Jack Garabedian

On July 20th the Concours d’Elegance was held at Keeneland and the weather turned out in our favor. We had a very good turnout at the show. The show promoters once again did a superb job putting the event together. The field was set up by specific themes and special interest vehicles. The AACA, as well as the Model A club, had their very own designated spot that, for the first time was indicated by the Concours Banners furnished by the event coordinators.

We had a many great cars on display but Cy Hanks had an entry in the “Class 2” (Vintage 1923-1949) category with his 1949 Buick Roadmaster.

This year’s show was commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Ford Mustang, even though the true year would fall in late 2014, the celebrations were to accommodate many other events to be held this year as well as next year. The club had a variety of cars on display. Here are some more photos highlighting the activities of the day.

Sam Humphries' 1916 Ford Model T and Bill Clark's 1950 Dodge as well as others on display.

AACA Bluegrass Region club members enjoying the many fine cars at the show as well as the camaraderie. From left to right Ray Szeluga, James Powell, John Blair, Jack Garabedian and Sam Humphries.

Ronnie Cornett’s 1965 Chrysler 300 Convertible, Jimmy Powell’s 1950 Chevy, John Blair’s 1952 Chevy and Jack Garabedian’s 1940 Chevy on display as well as others.

Near the end of the show there was a flyby of a WWII Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress as well as a couple of Navy Fighter Planes that flew by earlier that day, a thrilling sight.

This show is one of my favorites, not only for the great display of cars, motorcycles, steam engines and a stagecoach, but the fantastic food venders. Hope to see you next year.

Club Ladies at The Gift Box Lunch

By Jeannine Garabedian The club ladies gathered at The Gift Box for a leisurely lunch on July 20 while the men displayed their cars at the Concours d'Elegance at Keeneland. The food was delicious as usual. Everyone enjoys eating there as well as browsing the gift shop.

We missed you at this year’s Concours d’Elegaunce. I hope the threat of rain, which never materialized, is what kept you away. Hope to see you and your car next year. There were more than a few Mustangs at this year’s event. Mustang was the Concours featured car. As always the track kitchen provided a good breakfast for those of us hearty early birders.

Don’t hesitate to get your car out and drive it. Give your car credit. I have always been hesitant to get our ’69 Dart GT convertible out on the road. You know how 44 year olds react? Well I was pleasantly surprised after Charlie Simpson and I finished out Great Race adventure. The Dart performed exceptionally during the 4313 miles race and journey. Fact is it outperformed Charlie and I.

Please keep our ailing club members and friends in your thoughts and prayers.

See you on the road. If the top is up or down it does not matter as long as we are out touring with friends. Come along and enjoy our tours. Renew “old” friendships and make new ones.

Punkyville/Falmouth Tour Saturday, August 17th

Meet at NEWTOWN PIKE McDonald’s 9:00 a.m. We will depart at 9:30 a.m. Lunch will be approximately at 12 noon followed by a tour of Punkyville.

About Punkyville Since 2003, Charles “Punky” Beckett has been building his own retro town on the land next to his house. Gas station, water tower, church, hardware store, jail, a bank – the list is

similar to other home-built towns that dot the landscape, built by similar men with similar excess time and energy. Punky has filled his buildings with period items, and can tell visitors where and when he acquired each of his thousands of things. The full size caboose serves as a museum where Punky puts the stuff that doesn’t seem to fit anywhere else.

****LACK OF A SEPTEMBER TOUR****

If anyone is interested in planning and leading the September tour please contact any member of the Board. The tour does not have to be an overnight as called out in the Club Calendar of Events.

2013 By Wayne Carini from the TV Show Chasing Classic Cars

”USE YOUR CARS OR PAY THE PRICE”

Cars were designed to be driven. Once you've shown your car, drive it and use the heck out of it. I have an Arnolt Bristol coupe, for example, that I'll restore and take on the Mille Miglia. I'll drive it at Pebble Beach, then I'll drive it some more. The only cars you really shouldn't use are the original cars that will deteriorate. If the paint is cracked or flaking, it could get worse. I have a Hudson Italia with original paint and original tires, but I want to drive it, so I'm having another set of wheels made. A lot of people let their cars sit and it's the worst thing, because fuel deteriorates and leaves a gooey deposit. Floats stick and needles get blocked; it's the same with injectors. And if the car isn't run, the oil doesn't circulate to keep seals and gaskets soft. Meanwhile, moisture collects in the brake fluid and wreaks havoc with the master cylinder and wheel cylinders. Then they drive the car and say, "What a piece of junk." It's not the car's fault. Even people who drive their cars regularly park them in the winter. If you have a dry winter day, don't just start it, drive it. Get the fluids up to temperature and drive 10 miles. I just bought a 1988 Mercedes 560SL with 750 miles. The owner used it slightly every few weeks. After he died his

widow sold it. Even though it has super low mileage, it's never suffered from sitting. Contrast that with a Ferrari 275 GTB/4 we restored and took to a regional Ferrari meet. After it won best of show, we rolled it into the garage. Though it was started regularly, it wasn't ever moved. One day I dropped by the garage, and the tires were low and flat-spotted, the wheels were corroding, the leather was moldering, the brakes were stuck and the undercarriage was rusted. From sitting! I like to see a collector car driven about 1,000 miles a year, but that doesn't happen most of the time. But any restored car should be used. And if you get a paint chip, just fix it. I don't get to enjoy cars as much as I used to because I'm so busy, but I try to make the time. Today, it's beautiful outside and I'm going to take one of the cars and visit my mom. So go visit your mom, and make the drive in an old car.

AH-OOO-GHA’S THE CAR IS THE STAR By James and Patty Powell

When I was 15 years old, I happened to see on a used car lot about 10 miles from my home in Lynch, KY, a 1950 Chevrolet coupe; bright red, spinner hubcaps, and dummy spotlights. I wanted this car more than anything, but of course had no money. I begged my father to go to the used car lot with me to see this car. A week or so went by, and I was nagging so hard that he finally gave in and went with me to look at it. This was in 1959, and I believe the car was around $300. This was a LOT of money! I thought I could talk him into buying it for me and me pay him back by doing odd jobs. Of course that didn't happen and I was heartbroken. Two to three weeks later a friend from football purchased the car. Now, about 54 years later, I found this car, with the help of a friend, Joe Vice. He told me the car was in Nicholasville, KY, so I went to look at it. I had been looking for a car to drive on the car club trips, so they would quit hassling me about not driving my other old car, a restored to the max 1967 Plymouth GTX. After talking with my wife, I decided it had to be mine. It is a 1950 Chevrolet Bel Air, 2 door hardtop.

It needed a new paint job, which it got, and a lot of TLC, which it is getting. Many little features have been added to personalize the car, that were available in the 50's, and now we have a car that we both enjoy taking on the club trips. Thank you, Joe!

The Sunday Funnies

Steve and Gary are in Steve’s driveway looking at Gary’s old car. Gary says I want to sell my old car. The engine purrs like a kitten but the bad part is it has 165,000 miles on the old girl. Steve tells Gary to disconnect the odometer cable and attach an electric drill on reverse and bring the miles down to 75,000 miles for an easy sale. Gary says he will do just that and thanked Steve. Six weeks later Steve sees Gary driving his old car. Steve yells out to Gary, “I thought you were going to sell the old car”. Gary replies, “are you kidding it has 75,000 miles on the odometer why should I sell it”!
