Introduction v

Introduction

Blur is not your common racing game. It combines the fun of destroying your opponents

from Mario Kart with the elegance of Need for Speed. Blur displays stunning racing

environments based on real locations around the world and real cars that look great.

Power ups in the game add a dynamic experience that changes the common strategy of

racing games, they can give you the edge to destroy your enemy and achieve victory or

they can spell your doom. Enjoy extensive content, play single player mode against 9

rivals, meet their requirements, and defeat them in one-on-one; or play multiplayer

mode and compete against 4-20 other players. You can also link to your social profiles

to add friends or brag your achievements. Blur is a must-have game developed by

Bizarre Creations and published by Activision. You can play Blur on PlayStation 3, Xbox

360, and Windows PC systems. This guide covers basic “getting started” information to

ease the navigation in the game and information to help you progress through the

game.

Menu

Career is the primary single player game mode. The goal is to defeat 9

rivals. Each rival has a group with seven events. In the events you can earn

Lights and Fan points. Earn Lights by placing in the top 3. Lights unlock

more events. Earn fans by impressing the crowd doing specific actions. Earning Fans

unlocks more cars.

Stickers are the achievements and trophies that you have achieved.

Showroom displays all the cars that you have unlocked. In this menu you

can customize the car and use mods.

Photos displays the photos that have been taken with Photo mode. You can

share photos on your Facebook and Twitter feeds.

Here you can see any standing challenges. Players can send a racing

challenge to a friend. If the second player beats the time, they can send the

updated challenge back. These challenges go back and forth until one

player concedes.

After a single player event the game records your achievements and post

them to Leaderboards. Leaderboards are based online so you can see other

player’s achievements. Here you can also choose rivals and challenge friends.

Here you can enter codes to unlock content.

In Options you can change the Single Player difficulty, choose controller

layout, adjust the sound and graphics, manage storage, link your account to

social networks, and see the credits.

power ups and their actions, the social features of the game, the

progression of the game, the different types of challenges in career mode,

and also contains video tutorials.

The quit option will take you out of Single Player mode.

Gameplay

The single player Career mode is where you can start from square one, with only a few

class D cars at your disposal. You race your way to meeting your rivals, all of whom

have their own unique cars and mods to give you, provided you complete their

challenges and then defeat them in a 1 on 1 race. As you progress, you unlock new

classes, faster cars, and new areas to race in. As you complete the various events and

challenges, you rank up and earn “lights” for placing in the races, earning enough fans,

and completing a Gate challenge during your laps.

different multiplayer game modes.

The quit option will take you out of Multiplayer mode.

Gameplay

There are four modes to pick from in the playlist menu: Power-up Racing, Motor Mash,

Hardcore Racing and World Tour. Within Custom Game you choose from Racing or

Motor Mash.

Power-up Racing

The title sums up the style of racing in this option. It is a combination of head to head

racing and the special abilities gained while racing around the track. The question is are

you and offensive or defensive racer? In the offensive abilities or power-ups, Shock

launches EMP domes to the front of the pack, stunning any player that passes through

including you so be mindful if you use this. These would be good to use to knock the

lead racer out of the lead position. Barge is a close range attack that forces cars away

or defends against attacks. This would be good if you are on the heels of the leader and

wanted to take the lead. Bolt fires up to three Bolt rounds to deal heavy damage and

forces cars to swerve. This is a great way to move other players out of your way. Shunt

is a homing missile which flips the car. It also fires backwards to defend against attacks.

Nitro is a burst of speed which helps you move up in position.

Page 15: Blur: A Comprehensive Guide to Gameplay - Weeblyluisvillarreal.weebly.com/uploads/4/3/0/3/43036481/blur_manual.pdf · 10 Blur: A Comprehensive Guide to Gameplay player’s achievements

Multiplayer 15

Sometimes a good offense is a good defense. The power-ups that make a good

defensive style of racing. Mine explodes on impact, spinning the cars. Shield protects

you from Power-up attacks and collision damage. Repair restores your car’s health.

Last but not least you can ram the other drivers.

Motor Mash

This mode is an all-out battle, earn points by dealing damage and destroying your

opponent’s cars. This game style is similar to the Twisted Metal. Within this type of

game play you want to gather up the power-ups as fast to be able to attack your

opponents first. Just beware in this mode you gain points by inflicting damage and

destroying opponents but in turn you lose points if you take damage or get destroyed.

Hardcore Racing

This is the straight forward style of racing. There are no power-ups in this mode. In this

game play you want a fast car with good acceleration, speed, and grip. One defensive

method you can use is what is called rubbage racing. This is when racing becomes a

full contact event. Push, ram, or spin your opponent out to gain positions in the

leaderboard.

World Tour

This mode has it all: the Power-up Racing, Motor Mash, and Hardcore Racing. This is

the all in one package. When choosing this mode you must pick your car wisely in this

mode to be able to dominate the track that is set for that race.

Drifting

Drifting is most frequently used to make sharp corners and avoid crashing into walls,

which costs the driver speed and time. Simply pressing the right button at the right time

will allow drivers to drift in "Blur”.

1. Drive the track as normal until you approach a sharp corner.

2. Press the button for the handbrake. On the Xbox 360, press "B." On the PC,

press the down arrow. On the PS3, press the "O" button.

3. Push the analog stick on the controller -- or the arrow key -- in the direction

you came from. For example, if you are drifting left into a sharp turn, push the

stick back and to the left as you swerve around the corner.

4. Release the drift button and drive as normal once you clear the turn.

Cars

25

Cars

Types of Cars

Drifty

Drifty cars require little manipulation when turning in order to begin a drift. Typically only

tapping the brakes is sufficient to begin drifting, and it requires some finesse in order to

cleanly stop the drift. Cars are prone to losing traction with the road surface and

spinning out. Of the three main types, drifty cars typically have the highest top speed

and the lowest health.

Very Drifty

Very drifty cars are a subset seen mostly in higher classes of cars. These cars are

generally the fastest of the fast. They require even less manipulation when drifting, and

often simply turning hard enough will begin the drift. These cars can be challenging to

keep straight as they have little traction.

Grippy

Grippy cars are just the opposite of drifty. They require more intense braking in order to

begin a drift. They are typically better at staying straight and have better grip with the

road surface, so they are less liable to spinning out. They have lower top speeds than

the drifty cars, but have better average health.

Very Grippy

As with Very Drifty cars, Very Grippy cars are a subset of Grippy cars. They have

significantly higher traction with the road and require extremely heavy braking in order

to drift. These cars can be challenging to navigate around sharp bends at speed without

crashing.

Balanced

Balanced cars are just as their name implies. They have average amounts of traction

and are good cars for new players who don’t yet know which type they would prefer.

Page 26: Blur: A Comprehensive Guide to Gameplay - Weeblyluisvillarreal.weebly.com/uploads/4/3/0/3/43036481/blur_manual.pdf · 10 Blur: A Comprehensive Guide to Gameplay player’s achievements

26 Blur: A Comprehensive Guide to Gameplay

Off Road

Off road vehicles are just what they imply; they are cars designed for tracks that have

large sections without pavement. They are adept at accelerating over uneven terrain

and maintaining traction off of paved surfaces. They are unique in that they have 2 extra

bars of health over the other three types of cars, giving them 7 maximum bars.

***Note*** As your speed increases, drifting becomes easier and easier. The faster you go and

the sharper you try to turn, the less you have to brake when you attempt to drift. As a result,

when you reach Class A vehicles, cars labeled as Grippy can achieve speeds high enough that

sharp turns will initiate drifting with minimal braking required. They are considered Grippy in

comparison to the other vehicles in that class, not relative to the other classes.

Classes of Cars

Class D

Class D vehicles are the slowest group of vehicles that the game offers. These vehicles

are the sort of everyday cars you might see in a Walmart parking lot, such as a Dodge

Challenger or a Nissan 350Z. This is a good starting point for new players; they don’t

typically achieve a speed high enough to spin out frequently but can still drift around a

corner if done properly.

Recommended beginner car: Dodge Challenger SRT8

Class C

Class C cars are somewhat higher quality cars than Class D. They have higher speeds,

better handling, and faster acceleration. These cars are still able to be seen on

roadways commonly, such as a Hummer H2 or an Audi TTS coupe.

Recommended beginner car: BMW M3 E92 (Tuner)

Class B

Class B cars are even more highly tuned than Class C. In Class B the differences

between grippy and drifty cars is readily apparent, as the higher possible speeds make

Page 27: Blur: A Comprehensive Guide to Gameplay - Weeblyluisvillarreal.weebly.com/uploads/4/3/0/3/43036481/blur_manual.pdf · 10 Blur: A Comprehensive Guide to Gameplay player’s achievements

Cars

27

drifting much more frequent. These cars are less commonly seen in real life and are

typically more expensive, such as the Lotus Exige Cup 260 or the Dodge Viper ACR.

Recommended beginner car: Lotus Exige Cup 260

Class A

Class A cars are the fastest cars the game offers. They have the highest speeds and

accelerations, although some cars are fast enough that they do suffer slightly in

handling and control. Even Grippy Class A cars will drift with very little braking, and

drifty cars will begin sliding without any brakes at all. Most Class A cars are very

expensive, and seeing them on a normal road is a rarity. Members of the upper echelon

include the Koenigsegg CCX-R, the Dodge Viper Venom 1000, and the Audi R8.

Recommended beginner car: Koenigsegg CCX-R

Legend (online only)

Legend Cars are specialized versions of existing cars that are only available in online

play. They are unlocked in online play by reaching level 50. Each time you reach level

50, you unlock a new Legend car that comes equipped with special modifiers for bonus

fans, health, and speed. They are spread across a multitude of classes and handling

types.

Rival Vehicles (single player only)

The rival vehicles are similar to the legend cars in that they are specialized versions of

existing cars from a wide sampling of classes and handling types. They also come

equipped with special modifiers for bonus fans, health, and speed. They differ in that

they are unlocked by defeating the rival who drives them in the career mode of single

player and are only available in career mode.

Power Ups 29

Power-Ups

Power ups are scattered throughout the track. They are used to help give you an

advantage to win or place you in a better pole position.

Makes a force field that burst out in a wave around your car. Activate when

you are next to a car and want to push them off-course

Gives you three projectiles that you can fire at your enemys in a straight line.

Press forward on the steering to fire in front and backwards on the steering to

fire in back. You can use these bolts to destroy Mines or Shunts.

Gives you a mine that you can drop either in front or behind you. Great for

when you have a small lead on a car that’s right behind you.

Adds a shot of nitrous to your engine giving you a short burst of speed when

used normally. When used in reverse the car air brakes, allowing for tight and

sudden turns, then boosts back up to normal speeds.

Repairs five bars of health on your car. Most non- Off Road type vehicles will

be fully healed by this.

Makes a force field that temporarily surrounds your car and makes you

immune to damage.

Mod Shop

After a certain point in your racing career, the game grants you access to the mod shop,

where you can apply various modifications to each of your cars. For example, you can

deal more damage when you ram cars, add a laser sight to assist aiming with your

attacks and you can increase the range in which you pick up new power-ups.

1. Play online multiplayer as normal until you reach Rank 3. Simply participating in

and completing races will give you fans, which are equivalent to experience

points that help you level-up.

2. Enter the mod shop while waiting in a multiplayer lobby. Press "X" on the Xbox

360. Press "Square" on the PS3. Press the right "Shift" key on the PC.

3. Highlight the mod you want to install and add it. Press "X," "Square" or the right

"Shift" key to add it.

Modifications

In Blur players can find modifications, or mods, in both career mode and in online play.

These mods can improve your car health, upgrade your power-ups, or give other unique

bonuses in game.

Career mods are rewarded for defeating a boss. In addition to the rival’s own car, you
