Tuning In to the Sinai

Frequency – Was God’s Revelation a

Thing of the Past or is it a Voice Speaking to Us

Today?

“Mosquito tone” is a 17 KHz sine wave that teenagers use on their cell phone to alert them when they’ve got a text message so the teachers can’t hear it. Studies say that most adults can’t hear much above the 13-14KHz range, but teenagers can. Our ability to hear high frequencies falls as we age.

I found the mosquito tone online and played it. I heard nothing but my kids in the other room started screaming, “What is that? Turn it off!”

Adults have now struck back using the teenagers’ technology against them. Inventor Howard Stapleton has created the Mosquito teen repellent (I kid you not). He says only a few people over age 30 can hear the Mosquito’s sound. Stores and parks in England and Japan have begun to use it to keep teenagers from loitering. The repellent continually plays a high frequency. Adults can’t hear it and teenagers can’t stand it.

The most seminal moment in human history occurred when God addressed millions of people at Mount Sinai in an act of supreme revelation. Indeed, this moment was unprecedented, unparalleled and unrepeated. The Torah says, “These words that God spoke to all your assembly in the mountain out of the midst of the fire, the cloud and the thick darkness, with a great voice which was not heard again… [v’lo yasaf ]” (Deut. 5:19)

The simple meaning of the words, v’lo yasaf as explained by the Ibn Ezra and other commentaries, is that the voice and experience were “not to be repeated.” This was a onetime only deal, an exceptional and transcendent moment in human history, never to be replicated.

On the one hand, the uniqueness of this event is significant and special. We eternally reflect back and recognize that the moment is inimitable and unique, distinct and singular. On the other hand, its uniqueness forces us to consider the fact that no matter how we live and whatever choices we may make we can never experience revelation like Mount Sinai again. This generates a sense of disenfranchisement and deflates our spiritual ambition. If God only spoke once and we missed it, how do we connect today? How do we access the affirmation that only God’s voice can provide as to His existence and our charge in the world?

Commentators were troubled by this dilemma and offer another layer of interpretation of the phrase v’lo yasaf. Onkelus, the famous convert who lived in the period of the Tannaim from 35 – 120, translates v’lo yasaf not as never repeated, but rather as v’lo p’sak, God’s voice never ended or ceased. The Ramban brings a few sentences as evidence that the Hebrew root – yud, samech, fey – can mean ‘never stops.’ According to this interpretation, God spoke at Sinai thousands of years ago and his voice and message continue to carry until today and beyond.

So, which is it? Does v’lo yasaf mean God’s voice never repeated or does it mean God’s voice never ceased?

I believe the answer is up to each and every one of us. We each have a critical choice to make. Do we view the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai as part of the past, a historical event and previous occurrence, or does God voice speak to us today?

Each year on Shavuot we recall the

Sinai experience and challenge ourselves with the question of which interpretation best reflects our life. Are we going to choose the reading that says the voice of God is no longer heard, or are we going to continue to listen carefully for the reverberation of God’s message in our lives? Are the events of Mount Sinai representative of an ongoing, developing relationship with God, or are they an isolated event?

In truth, God’s voice is all around us. Like the mosquito tone, a frequency is playing, the only question is if we can hear it.

Each time we open a book and challenge ourselves by learning Torah, expanding and broadening our wisdom, understanding and insight, God’s voice is reverberating. Each prayer in which we are not only physically present but spiritually invested, God’s voice is reverberating. Each magnificent sunrise or sunset that we pause to take in, God’s voice is reverberating. Each act of kindness we share with others God’s voice is reverberating.

There is no doubt that God’s great and mighty voice is all around us. Shavuot demands of us to consider: are we tuned into the Sinai frequency or do we simply go through the motions, and view God’s voice as something of the past?

Good Shabbos,

In line with our Derech Eretz Statement, we mention some examples of how we can be more sensitive toward others and create an even better community. • Please make an effort to return greetings and wish others a Good Shabbos or Shabbat Shalom. • At the end of your silent Amidah/Shmonei Esrei, please refrain from talking while others around you are still Davening. All of these Mensch Messages have been submitted to the office. If you have a Mensch Message you would like us to promote, please email us at [email protected]

In the spirit of our mission “Valuing Diversity and Celebrating Unity,” we believe that a community is built on the collective engagement of individuals representing differing perspectives, whether religious, political, or social. As Boca Raton Synagogue is an environment where all of its members and visitors need to feel valued and welcomed, members are required to comport themselves in a manner which reflects mutual respect and a sense of inclusiveness. In our Synagogue, we value debate about pressing issues. This is consistent with the American democratic tradition. Our sages saw the value of arguments conducted L”Shem Shamayim,“ for the sake of heaven, believing that great minds who engage in respectful debate will arrive at better solutions. They valued and welcomed alternate views, as do we.

“Derech Eretz,” good and proper conduct, and mutually respectful dialogue are core values of the Synagogue community. These create a “safe place” for inspiration and spiritual growth, the central purpose of the Synagogue. It is a violation of Jewish law and ethics to use harsh language (vitriol) to demonize or to marginalize people with whom one may disagree. Uncivil expression reflects negatively on our Synagogue as well as on the individuals who engage in such behavior.

Boca Raton Synagogue expects its members to act and to speak with kindness and sensitivity to others. It is only in this fashion that a strong, vibrant, and harmonious community can be created and maintained. Adherence to this policy is a requirement for membership in good standing at the Boca Raton Synagogue.

MAIN MINYAN GALA KIDDUSH SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

We appreciate another year of great Kiddushim and the camaraderie they bring. As the cost of a private Kiddush has become prohibitive, the monthly Gala Kiddush

affords those with a Simcha to share that Simcha at an affordable price with the entire BRS community. Please consider joining our growing list of sponsors to

ensure the Kiddushim continue.

The last Gala Kiddush for this year is scheduled for June 10, 2017 (Graduation Kiddush)

We are very grateful to our Executive Chef Sponsors who contributed $1,000 and our Sous Chef Sponsors for contributing $500. These sponsorships make the Gala Kiddush possible.

The Kabbalists explain that in preparation for the holy moments of the Torah reading of Shavuot morning (the story of the giving of the Torah) and most exalted mussaf prayer of the year, it is proper to spend the entire night immersed in a particular order of Torah study. BOCA RATON COMMUNITY ERUVThe Boca Raton Community Eruv is in need of funds. Yearly membership remains at $100 per family. It is now possible to sponsor the Eruv for a particular Shabbat for $360. Donations can now also be made through our website www.bocaeruv.org or by contacting Chani Salamon at (561) 392-1026 for more information. Please help, as we ALL benefit from the Eruv. The Eruv is something we all rely on and often take for granted. If you have not yet contributed, please consider doing so in order to ensure that the Eruv can be checked and maintained.

BIKUR CHOLIM Netilat Yadayim (after sleep): Hospital Tip. It is preferable to wash with a cup. However, if one is not available, you can put your hands directly beneath the spigot, alternating each hand three times. If you sleep during the day for less than a half hour, you are not required to wash your hands.

SOCIAL ACTIONThe governors of all 50 U.S. states have released a statement strongly denouncing boycotts of Israel as "antithetical to our values and the values of our respective states." Governors United Against BDS, a group organized by the American Jewish Committee, pointed out that the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign seeks "to isolate Israel—a pluralistic nation with deep cultural, familial, security, educational, scientific and commercial bonds with our state and with the United States as a whole—rather than recognize the profound mutual benefits of our engagement with it."

The BDS campaign, the governors asserted, "would also undermine peacemaking by suggesting that economic and political pressure on Israel can replace real negotiation." While a diplomatic solution to the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians remains "painfully elusive," the governors affirmed their support for two independent states, which should be "achieved through direct, bilateral negotiations."

"Israel is a robust democracy with many rights and freedoms that do not exist in neighboring countries—or in much of the world," the governors observed. The BDS campaign's decision to exclusively attack Israel "while fundamental rights are trampled and atrocities are committed routinely not far beyond its borders," they noted, "raises serious questions about its motivations and intentions."

שבת פרשת במדברShabbat Parshat Be-Midbar

We all know the feeling of checking the stock market to see how the Dow or a particular stock is doing, even if we don’t actually have any plans to buy or sell our assets in the near future. We simply want to know how they are doing, because as people, we care deeply about our fortunes.Rashi explains that it’s for similar reasons that we find Hashem asking Moshe to count Bnei Yisrael over and over throughout the Torah - מתוך We find a census at the end of Sefer Shemot .חיבתן לפניו מונה אותן כל שעהbefore building the Mishkan, at the beginning of Bemidbar as Bnei Yisrael prepare to journey to Eretz Yisrael and again at the end of Sefer Bemidbar in preparation for entering Eretz Yisrael. Many mefarshim explain that the lesson here is somewhat deeper. It’s not just that Hashem cares about us, but that he cares about each and every one of us. Obtaining an estimate of the entirety of Bnei Yisrael or of each shevet would have been much easier. Hashem is trying to teach us that to Him, each one of us matters - no matter who - and He is therefore repeatedly interested in ‘checking in’ on each and every one of us.

The Poskim quote a prevalent minhag to specifically eat dairy foods on Shavuot. There are many different reasons given for this practice, ranging from the historical (after receiving the Torah and the laws of kashrut, Bnei Yisrael did not have much to eat on that day other than dairy foods) to the more mystical (the Torah is compared to milk and honey). As Shavuot is also one of the Yamim Tovim of the Shalosh Regalim, there is a Torah mitzvah to celebrate it with the traditional character of simhah. Therefore, there is a mitzvah to eat meat and drink wine as expressions of simhah.Fulfilling both of these ideas can present somewhat of a challenge, given that we not only refrain from eating meat and milk together, but that, according to the Shulhan Arukh, we wait 6 hours in between meat and dairy meals. Some Poskim write that a speical dispensation to the ‘waiting in-between’ period is in force Shavuot, however, the consensus of the Poskim is that a person must wait between eating meat and milk on Shavuot as they do the rest of the year. Many people therefore have the custom of eating a small dairy meal on the morning of Shavuot after returning home from the night long Tikkun and Shaharit and then eat a more ‘standard’ meat meal at lunchtime. Since the earlier breakfast meal takes place after sunrise, it must be preceeded by kiddush and hamotzi (or at the very least, a kezayit of mezonot).
