GREETER PROGRAMThank you to all of our wonderful volunteers for greeting synagogue goers as they enter the shul on Rosh Hashanah. Greeting someone can make all the difference in their shul experience at BRS. We are continuing our program for Yom Kippur. MACHZORIM FOR HIGH HOLIDAYSWe highly encourage everyone to bring their own Machzor to Shul for Yom Kippur, as we do not have enough to service the entire community. Please make sure to put your name on the inside.

MEN’S MIKVAHPrivate appointments are sold out for the Men’s Mikvah on Erev Yom Kippur from 6:00 am through 11:45 am.

The Mikvah will be open to all from 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm and from 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm. This year, the Mikvah will be closed for cleaning 2:00 pm to 2:30 pm. This decision was made based on feedback from previous years due to the heavy usage on Erev Yom Tov.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDEDAs we are gearing up for Yom Kippur there are many volunteer opportunities available. If you are interested in assisting the Shul, whether it is for community service hours or not, please contact Matthew Hocherman at [email protected]. These opportunities are available on Monday night, October 10, and Tuesday, October 11.

HIGH HOLIDAY INFORMATION

STROLLER PARKING ON HIGH HOLIDAYSPlease note that weather permitting the Sukkah is going to be built once again this coming week in advance of Yom Kippur. All stroller parking for Yom Kippur will take place in the Sukkah. There will be a tarp placed on top in order to protect the strollers from the rain. Only wheelchairs and scooters will be allowed to be parked in the front of the Shul. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

FIRST AID INFORMATIONThe following is information on first aid available at BRS.Hopefully, we will not need to use any of these.• First aid supplies can be found in a tote bag on a shelf in the main

lobby coat closet as well as in the medical cabinet located in the hallway near the cubbies.

• A small oxygen tank is available in the coat closet in the main lobby as well as in the medical cabinet near the High School.

• A defibrillator is located next to the coat closet in the main lobby as well as in the medical cabinet near the High School located in the hallway near the cubbies. They have been checked and are in working order.

• 911 should be called for any emergencies. There is a land telephone line in Rabbi Goldberg’s office. There is also a land line on the second floor of the High School. Shimmie Kaminetsky, who Davens in the Shechet Minyan, will have the key to the computer room and other offices on the second floor where the phone(s) are located. If he is not there, a marked key will be left in his Tallit bag

(FYI - if you use a cell phone to call 911, you need to tell them the address of the building - 7900 Montoya Circle.)

MOTHER’S CARE ROOMPlease be advised the mother’s care room will be open for Yom Kippur and available for mothers ONLY. No one should be entering this room for any other purpose than to nurse or change a baby’s diaper. We also ask that you keep the room clean for the next person.

PERSONAL BELONGINGSPlease do not leave your personal belongings on your seats from one service to the next. The custodians will not know the difference between a personal Machzor and a Shul Machzor. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

HIGH HOLIDAY CHILDCAREChildcare will be available on Yom Kippur 6:30 pm – 9:30 pm during Kol Nidre, 10:00 am - 2:00 pm on Yom Kippur Morning, and 5:30 - 8:00 pm during Neilah for those who have registered in advance. Please make sure that your young children are either in babysitting or at home and not disrupting the Davening. There should be no children running in and out of the Minyanim or playing in the hallways. The only children who should be sitting in Shul are ones who can sit quietly next to their parents. Please help us maintain the right decorum for people to get the most out of their Rosh Hashanah/Yom Kippur. This year, along with the wonderful babysitters that will be watching the children signed up for childcare, our group leaders have volunteered their time to ensure that your children will have a Rosh Hashanah infused with Tefillah, Rosh Hashanah stories, and of course Shofar blowing. We are very excited and appreciative to our outstanding group leaders for their dedication and commitment by giving of their time every Shabbat and especially on the Yamim Noraim. If you have a minute, please thank them personally. Please remember that this service is only for children that have signed up for childcare. Unfortunately, at this point, registration for childcare has closed.

GENERAL CHILDCARE RULES 1. If there is a youth program during childcare hours that covers your child’s age, the providers will accompany them to that location and accompany them back to childcare when finished. 2. If your child comes with a knapsack or diaper bag, please label it with his/her name. 3. For children under 3, please bring a change of clothes and diapers, if necessary. 4. Please pick up your children; no children will be allowed to leave by themselves. 5. Please be prompt in picking up your children when childcare is over. Lateness is not fair to your children, who are looking forward to seeing you.

PLEASE DRESS WARMIn order to accommodate the large crowds in each of the Minyanim, the air conditioning will be set slightly lower than usual. Please bring a sweater that you can easily put on or take off so that you are always comfortable.

RESPECT WHILE DAVENINGIf you need to walk through the Social Hall, please be sensitive to those Davening there and walk through quickly and quietly.

NEILAHThe Shechet Minyan and Family/Teen Minyan will be joining the Rand Sanctuary Minyan for Neilah on Yom Kippur. In order to accommodate the additional people, seating for Mincha and Neilah for men and women will be “open seating”. There are no reserved seats for Mincha and Neilah. We welcome congregants from any other Minyan who are interested in joining us for this uplifting community experience. In order to accommodate those coming in from other minyanim, we will be clearing a small section of chairs from the men’s section and making the women section in the back of the sanctuary smaller and removing the chairs to allow room for people who would like to stand. Also, as was done last year, in order to maintain decorum in the Social Hall, we will be removing the first few rows of seats and closing the wall for Neilah. This means that the Social Hall will also be “open seating” for Mincha and Neilah.

PLEASE DO NOT WEAR PERFUME OR COLOGNE

There are many members of our Shul that are extremely sensitive and highly allergic to the smell of perfume and cologne. We strongly encourage you not to use them, or to do so very lightly, as this can cause someone to have an asthma attack or other reaction.

BRS VOLUNTEER SECURITY TEAMAs we end 5776, the BRS Volunteer Security Team would like to thank the synagogue leadership and membership for a phenomenal year. This is a major issue that should not be overlooked. If you do see some suspicious behavior, please say something to the security guards, the security team or the synagogue staff. Do not delay in relaying this information. Please try to note specific descriptive details - make / color of vehicle, license plate numbers, physical description of the individuals. If walking home from synagogue or residencies at night, please try to walk with other individuals. Be aware of your surrounding and call out suspicious behavior if you see it. SOCIAL ACTIONMore bad news for supporters of BDS-- The Bank of Ireland, the country’s oldest financial institution, closed the accounts of the pro-Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions organization’s Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) in late September. The SPC branch in Ireland is a hardcore BDS group targeting the Jewish state. According to the Jerusalem Post, the closure of the SPC account appears to be part of a larger trend within the European banking system to sever ties with pro-BDS groups. It follows similar decisions in other European countries including Austria, Germany, France and the UK, where banks have closed down accounts of Palestinian campaign groups.Ireland is considered one of the strongholds of BDS activity in Western Europe. The termination of the SPC could result in growing

financial actions to end relationships with pro-BDS groups. The Post reported first on the closures of bank accounts in France, Germany and Austria in 2016.Commerzbank, Germany’s second largest bank, shut a BDS account in June. The Austrian bank Bawag shut down the account of the Austria-Arab Culture Center, which had hosted convicted Palestinian terrorist Leila Khaled, who participated in the 1969 hijacking of a TWA jet. A year later, she helped hijack EL AL flight 219.

Rabbi Ephraim Shapiro Join Katz Yeshiva High School's Aseret Ymei Yeshiva family learning program on Sunday, October 9 at 10:30am for our Keynote address by Rabbi Ephraim Shapiro. The program will take place in the BRS Sephardic Beit Midrash.


The Rambam writes that at the end of life, Hashem judges and calculates a person’s cumulative mitzvot vs. aveirot—not necessarily in terms of sheer numbers but in a larger scheme. Some mitzvot weigh more heavily and some aveirot are more significant. Hazal tell us in numerous instances that we do not know the ‘value’ of any particular mitzvah or aveirah and therefore need to take those that appear simple and easy as seriously as we take those that appear complicated and difficult. Just as a person faces the ultimate judgment at the end of life, so too, writes the Rambam, each person is judged on Rosh ha-Shannah. Those whose mitzvot overwhelm their aveirot are immediately sealed for life, while those whose aveirot outweigh their mitzvot are destined for death. The fate of those in the middle, the beinonim, hangs in the balance during the עשרת ימי תשובה (ten days of repentance). If they do teshuvah, they get sealed for life, and if not, they are destined for death. The Lehem Mishneh wonders that it seems that a beinoni is punished if he doesn’t do teshuvah. But in the end of the day, such a person is really on the border; shouldn’t Hashem’s attribute of mercy dictate that if a person is just on the border, he should be granted life? Why is a good judgment dependent on doing teshuvah? He explains that during עשרת ימי תשובה, Hashem is particularly accessible and close to the Jewish people. If a person lets these days go by without doing teshuvah and taking advantage of Hashem’s closeness, it is not merely a lost opportunity, but rather tantamount to an aveirah. When Hashem is making Himself so close and so accessible, it is incumbent upon all of us to make the most of it. Failing to do so is simply unacceptable.

In the event of a severe storm that continues into Friday, it is probably best to not rely on the Eruv without first verifying that it is still intact. If the Eruv should not be intact before Shabbat, there are certain rules and regulations to be aware of: There are two different prohibitions in force: 1. Transporting or carrying an object from one domain (רשות) to another (רשות); 2. Transporting or carrying an object within a public domain ( רשות This include not only carrying items (such as a .(הרבים או כרמליתtallit, siddur, water bottle and the like) but also pushing objects (such as a baby stroller) through public areas. There is a rabbinic enactment to check one’s pockets before leaving one’s house to make sure that nothing was accidentally left in them from before Shabbat. Thought should be put into where to leave a front door key so as not to inadvertently carry it from one’s house into a public domain. The area under a roof or awning that extends forward from one’s front door counts as a private domain and a key can be hidden in that area.

The most important thing to remember is to be safe and only go outdoors after the ‘all clear’ signal is given by the authorities.

We are all excited about the upcoming High Holidays. In an effort to make our Davening more meaningful this year, we are once again seeking to pre-solicit our Kol Nidre pledges in advance of Yom Kippur. We have three goals for this appeal. First, we seek 100% participation. Second, as a community, we seek to raise a minimum of $40,000, higher than last year’s goal of $35,000. Third, and relatedly, we ask all families to consider increasing their support.
