EDWARD M. REINGOLD CALENDRICAL CALCULATIONS: The Millennium Edition, 2001 This new edition of the successful calendars book is being published at the turn of the millennium and expands the treatment of the previous edition to new calendars and variants. As interest grows in the impact of seemingly arbitrary calendrical systems upon our daily lives, this book frames the calendars of the world in a completely algorithmic form. The books gives a description of twenty-five calendars and how they relate to one another: the Gregorian (current civil), ISO (International Organization for Standardization), Egyptian (and nearly identical Armenian) Julian (old civil), Coptic, Ethiopic, Islamic (Moslem), Modern Persian (both astronomical and arithmetic), Bahá’í (both present and future forms), Hebrew (Jewish), Mayan (long count, haab, and tzolkin), Balinese Pawukon, French Revolutionary (both astronomical and arithmetic forms), Chinese (and nearly identical Japanese), old Hindu (solar and lunisolar), and modern Hindu ) solar and lunisolar. J.M. CARIDAD Y OCERIN ECONOMETRÍA: MODELOS ECONOMÉTRICOS Y SERIES TEMPORALES, Edita: Editorial Reverté, S.A. , 1998. TOMO I. *Modelos econométricos uniecuacionales.

35371 HB141 G73 CLIVE W.J. GRANGER EMPIRICAL MODELING IN ECONOMICS: SPECIFICATION AND EVALUATION, Edita: Cambridge University Press, 1999. Chapter I deals with Specification. The process of specifiying a model is discussed using deforestation in the Amazon region of Brazil as an Illustration Chapter 2 considers evaluation, and argues that insufficient evaluation is undertaken by economists, and that models should be evaluated in terms of the their output. In chapter 3, the question of how to evaluate forecasts is considered at several levels of increasing depth and using a more sophisticated, technical approach than in the earlier two chapters.

35373 HB842 A65 MASANAO AOKI MODELING AGGREGATE BEHAVIOR AND FLUCTUATIONS IN ECONOMICS, Stochastic Views of Interacting Agents. Edita: Cambridge University Press, 2002. “Once again Masanao Aoki has written a book ahead of its time. This he applies techniques popular in the hard sciences, but alien to most economists, to analyze the dynamic interaction of a large (finite) number of agents (or entities). He characterizes types agents by their decisions and the movement between types as endogenous transition probabilities. Aoki uses random combinatorial analysis to describe the distribution of types, and the backward Chapman-Kolmogorov equations to describe the aggregate dynamics. This is an innovative approach to characterize a complicated dynamic stochastic economic environment”.

35381 HG221 C43 BRUCE CHAMP MODELING MONETARY ECONOMIES. Edita: Cambridge University Press, 2001 “Champ and Freeman’s book is excellent in the that it teacher students to use dynamics models to think carefully about important monetary, fiscal, and macroeconomic issues. The authors put the models to work to explain a variety of classic and contemporary problems in macroeconomics. The models are rigorous and carefully explained: yet they are simple enough that undergraduates can quickly learn to put them to work. I used the first edition of this book to teach undergraduate. This edition is even better than the first”.

STANLEY I. GROSSMAN ÁLGEBRA LINEAL. Edita: McGraw-Hill, 1996

Edita: Editorial Reverte, S.A., 1984.

35384 QA312 P44 WASHEK F. PFEFFER DERIVATION AND INTEGRATION. Edita: Cambridge University Press. 1993 This book is devoted to an invariant multi-dimensional process of recovering a function from its derivative. It considers additive functions defined on the family of all bounded BV sets that are continuous with respect to a suitable topology. A typical example is the flux of a continuous vector field. A very general Gauss-Green theorem follows from the sufficient conditions for the derivability of the flux. Since the setting is invariant with respect to local lipeomorphisms, a standard argument extends the Gauss-Green theorem to the Stokes theorem on Lipschitz manifolds. In addition, the author proves the Stokes theorem for a class of top-dimensional normal currents—a first step toward solving a difficult open problem of derivation and integration in middle dimensions.

Special functions, natural generalization of the elementary functions have been studied for centuries. The greatest mathematicians, among them Euler Gauss, Legendre, Eisenstein, Riemann and Ramanujan, have the foundations for this beautiful and useful area of mathematics, Euler found the gamma functions, which extends the factorial. The Bessel functions and Legendre polynomials play a role in three dimensions similar to the role of sine and cosine in two dimensions.

DAVID C. KAY, Ph.D THEORY AND PROBLEMS OF TENSOR CALCULUS This Outline is designed for use by both undergraduates and graduates who find they need to master the basic methods and concepts of tensors. The material is written from both an elementary and applied point of view, in order to provide a lucid introduction to the subject. The material is of fundamental importance to theoretical physics (e.g., field and electromagnetic theory) and to certain areas of engineering (e.g., aerodynamics and fluid mechanics). Whenever a change of coordinates emerges as a satisfactory way to solve a problem, the subject of tensors is an immediate requisite. Indeed, may techniques in partial differential equations are tensor transformations in disguise. While physicists readily recognize the importance and utility of tensors many mathematicians do not. It is hoped that the solved problems of this book will allow all readers to find out what tensors have to offer them.

35250 QA453 G4518 PETER B. GELTNER GEOMETRÍA. Edita: International Thomson Editores. 1998.

35380 QC20 S65 ROEL SNIEDER A GUIDED TOUR OF MATHEMATICAL METHODS FOR THE PHYSICAL SCIENCES. Edita: Cambridge University Press. 2001. Mathematical methods are essential tools for all physical scientists. This novel textbook provides a comprehensive guided tour of the mathematical knowledge and techniques that are needed by students in this area. In contrast to more traditional textbook, all the material is presented in the form of problems. Within these problems the basic mathematical theory and its physical applications are well integrated. In this way the mathematical insights that the students acquire are driven by their physical insight. Topics that are covered include vector calculus (div, grad, curl, Laplacian), linear algebra, Fourier analysis, scale analysis, Green’s functions, normal modes, tensor calculus, and perturbation theory. This book can be used by undergraduates or by lower-level graduate students in the physical sciences. It can serve as a stand-alone text, or as a source of problems and examples to complement other textbook, This guided tour of mathematical techniques is instructive, applied, and fun.

In this comprehensive and innovative text, Professor Harrison (Stanford University) offers a basic understanding of the electronic structure of covalent and ionic solids, simple metals, transition metals and their compounds. The book illuminates the relationships of the electronic structures of these materials and shows how to calculate dielectric, conducting and bonding properties for each. Also described are various methods of approximating electronic structure, providing insight and even quantitative from the comparisons. Dr. Harrison has also included an especially helpful “Solid State Table of the Elements” that provides all the parameters needed to estimate almost any property of any solid, with a hand-held calculator, using the techniques developed in the book.

But how many of us really understand how a rainbow is formed, why the setting sun is red and flattened, or even why the sky at night is not absolutely black?

URI SHMUELI INTRODUCTION TO CRYSTALLOGRAPHIC STATISTICS. Edita: Oxford University Press. 1995. Modern structural applications of crystallography make extensive use of statistical methods, in particular the probability density function (pdf) of magnitude of the structure factor. Similarly, direct methods of phase determination have been responsible for much of the success of crystallography—methods based on properties of joint pdfs This monograph, from two authorities in the field of structure factor statistics, presents a survey of techniques and theories in this field of research in a self-contained way, with an emphasis on the probabilistic principles involved.

TIM BEDFORD PROBAILISTIC RISK ANALYSIS: FOUNDATIONS AND METHODS. Edita: Cambridge University Press, 2000. Probabilistic risk analysis aims to quantify the risk caused by high technology installations. Increasingly, such analysis are being applied to a wider class of systems in which problems such as lack of data, complexity of the systems or uncertainty about consequences, make a classical statistical analysis difficultor impossible. The authors discuss the fundamental notion of uncertainty, its relationship with probability, and the limits to the quantification of uncertainty.

JAMES D. LIVINGSTON ELECTRONIC PROPERTIES OF ENGINEERING MATERIALS. Edita: John Wiley & Sons. 1999. Livingston helps make the complex concepts behind the electronic properties of materials much more accessible for students. His very readable writing style and clear organization help to make key topics much easier to understand. The first part of this text presents only “classical” ideas, covering the electronic properties of solids that are pertinent to the use of materials as components in various products. The second part introduces quantum mechanics and applies quantum chemistry and quantum physics to the basic properties of metals, insulators, and semiconductors. This approach allows the student to become familiar with some of the mathematics necessary for quantum mechanics before being exposed to the more challenging fundamental concepts.

J.W.CHRISTIAN+ THE THEORY OF TRANSFORMATIONS IN METALS AND ALLOYS. Edita PERGAMON. 2002. The arrangement of chapters and sections is unchanged but the book is now divided into two parts, the first of which covers the general theory whilst the second is concerned whit descriptions of specific types of transformation. My original intentions was to make only limited revisions and additions but I eventually decided that very extensive rewriting was required in view of the large number of papers published in the ten years. Part I of the new editions is consequently about 50% longer than the corresponding chapters of the first edition, and is appearing after a lengthy delay, for which I apologize. However, I hope that all the major developments of the interim period have been incorporated, so that the edition may perhaps serve both as a text book and as a reference source up to the level of active research. An increased symbol list has necessitated some minor changes of notation (especially Q instead of Z partition functions) and numerical quantities are now given in SI units. In response to several requests, I have included a few selected problems at the end of Part I; these are of a very variable standard, but I hope that teachers and students may find some of them useful*

E. PAUL DEGARMO ENGINEERING ECONOMY. Edita: Prentice-Hall, 1993. Engineering economy – what is it and why is it important? The initial reaction of many engineering student to these questions is “money matters will be handled by someone else. It is not something I need to worry about”. Any engineering project must be not only physically realizable but also economically feasible. For example, a child’s tricycle be built with an aluminum frame or a composite frame. Some may argue that because the composite frame will be stronger and lighter, it is a better choice. However, there is not much of a market for thousand dollar tricycles. One might suggest that the above arguments is ridiculously simplistic and that common sense would dictate choosing aluminum for the framing material.
